What will you use root for? - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

When we finally get root (through either an unlocked bootloader or S-OFF), what are your specific plans on using it for?
I plan to:
Flash custom recovery
Obtain or create a stock de-odexed ROM (if there's an update and no one has put one out yet).
Remove all the bloat.
Insert my own specific apps and data to it (so I don't have to go around re-installing or updating everything every time I re-flash it)
Implement an OC kernel and find out if 1.5 GHz is the real clock speed of this processor and it was just underclocked, which has been discussed but not proven that I have seen. I know the latest OC kernel is only really getting 1.458 GHz, but I can dream.
Three-Dot Remap!
Get rid of Wi-Fi nag!
Flash ROM!
Utilize root-only apps I have.
Finally be content.
Get bored and flash Viper ROM
Wonder why I didn't use this in the first place
Figure out how to revert the theme back to stock HTC Sense but keep the tweaks.
Live blissfully ever after.
Quickly get bored.
Wonder when Jellybean will come out for our phone, or when an awesome dev will make it.
Wait impatiently.
Watch as Key Lime Pie arrives and we still haven't gotten Jellybean.
Freak out!
Yeah, the first 10 will happen for sure, likely the next 4 will happen after a few weeks, and inevitably, when my flashing addiction gets too great, the next three items will follow. Hopefully we'll have several Jellybean ROM options before Key Lime Pie comes out, though.
Personally, I'll be happy just getting root, either through the bootloader unlock or S-OFF, as long as I can get the ROM customized the way I want it.
I really don't think that's an unreasonable request, Verizon. Let us unlock!

that about covers it.

You can knock out the root/recovery process with my tool here

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that got an unlock code, flashed recover and rooted before everything got locked up. My phone hasn't had any updates pushed to it, my root still works and I'm a happy camper!
Initially the reason I rooted was just to get wireless-tether to work, as I relied on it heavily with my last few phones. I don't know how I managed to get the Inc 4G on an upgrade without loosing my unlimited data plan, as I understand most folks were forced onto a tiered plan due to the phone being released after the grandfather date for the unlimited plans. Stroke of luck #2!
At the moment, root has bought me wireless-tether, allowed me to actually yank some bloat instead of just disabling it and given me more flexibility when playing around with alternate launchers. What I'm really waiting for is the forthcoming ROMs so I can get a de-Sensed OS on this bad boy. I can only imagine how wicked fast it's gonna be without Sense and all the other crap. Plus ICS is damn sexy looking all on its own!

I'll do a full Nandroid backup immediately after #1. Then:
Remove bloat,
install wireless tether
install 3-button remap,
install TiB and backup all installed apps+data.
put all of my custom ringtones into the system area so they stay put
After thoroughly enjoying that for a few days (or minutes), then make a 2nd Nandroid backup and flash the Viper ROM, assuming it's out of Beta test.

The 5 month wait for s-off/root was so very worth it:
Remove bloat, - DONE
install wireless tether - DONE
install 3-button remap, - pending
install TiB and backup all installed apps+data. - DONE
put all of my custom ringtones into the system area so they stay put - DONE
Custom tag on hboot, WiFi Nag gone...
Definitely still in the enjoying part.

I modified the framework-htc-res.apk by removing the 4 pngs mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30679535&postcount=40
I wasn't entirely sure which version the files were downloadable in that post, so I just modified my own. It was really a joy: Actually being able to get to the files using Root Explorer, pulling them off of the phone to my PC, modifying the framework files, changing the filesystem to R/W, and then putting them back. I had nearly forgotten that simple pleasure.
Not seeing that stupid icon in the notification area has been so uplifting today. I swear I've turned on the display several times today just to not see it there.

The question is now what we going to do with s-off after this epically long stint without root and s-off. It's like the doors of willa wonkas factory being open for the first time, yes.

You can use either Chainfire's SuperSU or ChainsDD's Superuser. Either should work fine. Unless ChainsDD has updated his Elite, the advantage to SuperSU is the checkbox to disable and hide Superuser. I cannot say if that option is a Pro only option because I have the paid versions for both. (note: you can have only one of them installed at a time)
Then again Superuser Elite has OVER 9000!!!

No the chainfire 3D app that deals with graphic

[Q] two rezound questions (ICS, tether)

quick questions..
1) What is best way to wifi tether without voiding the warranty (S-Off)
2) if I decide to go S-Off route and install ICS Sense roms, is there a way I get traditional rosie (round one, not the rectangular one with more icons). I prefer original HTC rounded style rosie.
1) I don't know, but just for accuracy, this phone doesn't have s-off, just an unlocked bootloader.
2) If you stick with the GB ROMs you will have the Rosie you want, I believe. Here's a shot of my homescreen:
EDIT: Just saw you asked about ICS and original Rosie... I don't know.

Fera is completely right about not having S-OFF, we only have dev unlock which allows us to change boot, system, and recovery partitions.
There are wifi tethering options that don't require root. Most of which involve paying for wifi hotspot. There are free USB tethering options that do not require root.
If you go up to ICS, there is no current method to use Sense 3.5(the Gingerbread version of Sense). On ICS, you get Sense 3.6 or better which is the 5 column dock all of the current ICS ROMs have.

Yeah but the ICS Rosie is much more functional. It helps keep your desktop clean with its ability to put multiple apps into folders. When I briefly went back to GB to get the OTA radio update, I couldn't believe how much I missed the ICS Rosie.

If you actually have S-Off like I do and your running ICS like I am, then you should just be able to download the Wifi Tether App 3.1-beta 11. With that set up the device profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE), enable routing fixing, and you should be set, also if you have the S-Off I guess you dont run into the issue of not being able to use the encryption, I'm able to use it no problem. There is no current method to get S-Off as previously stated by others, I have S-Off by pure luck, turned in my RELOCKED Rezound to my Local VZW store and the replacement they gave me had S-Off, stroke of luck!

being a noob.. i made a mistake of equating unlocked boot loader to s-off.
i am actually looking to wifi-tether without unlocking the bootloader. ad-hoc is fine. i know without unlocked bootloader, i get temp root. Is that enough to tether ? also i want to be able to tether without verizon figuring out (i think their official app changes the apn so they will know right away). And of course it will great if I can do it without buying any app..

sorry if you want to steal bandwidth, you have to root. Not sure how long temp root lasts these days.
And temp root is gone with the OTA so if you want the newer radios and the wifi tethering after the OTA you need to perm root.

Thinking about rooting

How is the user experience on a rooted Galaxy Note II? I want to root it ASAP but i do not want to loose out on how smooth a stock Note 2 runs.

is as smooth because we are using the same stock rom so it won't be different on that regard
for root if you don't have a reason to use it don't even bother in my case the phone without root will be like a car without keys because 50% of my apps need root

I always root my phones, but its always a little glitchy (in perspective a like-stock phone still has issues too). I see so much potential in a rooted GSN2, with being able to add more apps to the split screen app options. In this case, i don't want to forego a super smooth user experience for more options but a glitchy experience...That where my concern comes in.

true but, and correct me if i'm wrong, if you don't see that update in time to defer it, it will attempt to DL/install it on it's own.

You can take a ota while rooted but you'll lose root. . If you deleted boat or modded certain things you could brick if you don't revert them back to stock... heres what my theory if you don't have specific reasons to root then you probably don't need to if you're going to be aware you can mess up your device if you don't follow instructions and have a basic understanding of what you're doing .... root alone doesn't give you any additional performance

Dumb Question
OK so from my understanding the device has a chance to brick if you root and uninstall the bloat and get an OTA update and allow it to go through.
K so I want root to delete the trash that comes pre installed (bloat as we all call it) However, instead of a custom ROM I wanna Stay With stock, at least until we get a ROM (When we find a way through the bootloader) that can use the SPen and stays stable and updated. untilll that day comes or sammy stops development I want the Stock Setup and there updates just debloated. Here's my dumb question... Without it having an unlocked bootloader is there any way to flash back to stock incase it locks up and bricks, or is it just better to wait for the BLunlock to be safer. love the phone as is I just hate that Verizon puts all there garbage on... it would be one thing if it were optional or able to be deleted, but having to hack there trash out is not cool.

If it soft bricks/gets stuck in bootloop and you can get into odin download mode you can almost always flash back to stock to fix the issue I believe.
Absolutely no issues, I can now get around to backing up the bloatware with TI Backup and then uninstall that crap or delete it either way its going, going, gone. Root is the way.

Did it work before rooting? Rooting by itself shouldn't cause an issue like that. My guess is the card isn't fast enough for the 1080p video data it's recording.
To the OP, something you might find useful in root is that Adblock Plus works only with wifi without rooting. Even if ads don't bother you, they use your data and I assume it's capped for you, like it is for most people.

Noob ICS Wifi tethering

Ok have been reading for a couple days now and while I know more I am probably more confused than when I started.
Goal: Wifi tethering / 4g hotspot without paying extra
Set up: OTA ICS update. I am still on a grandfathered unlimited plan so the normal hotspot isn't included. With my laptop I use easy tether through USB which works great. But can't be done on an Windows RT setup.
I thought I would just need to root and I could side load a wifi tether app but the new update it is hard to follow what is necessary.
Im confused, is this a question? are you making a work up? Looks like your new to forums i wanna say you posted in the wrong area.
First if you want to root start with the 1 click root. I did it the other day and it works great.
second Santod has a great OTA ICS deoxed and oxed roms here
http://forums.infectedrom.com/forumdisplay.php/79-Thunderbolt-Android-Development
lastly from what i know wifi teathering works on all the roms and doesnt require extra charge....the type of data plan you have is on on you weather unlimited or limited it still works without a charge.
Edit: i even went to get the links for you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703455 is for the 1 click root (its more than 1 click since it requires a code but it tells you EXACTLY what to do)

Ok. I'm a noob with some pretty tiring questions. Basically i have had my bolt since it was released with unlimited. Never really had any problems before but since the ICS update it lags and text message never send/receive attachments like pics. I have never rooted before or done any other customizations to the phone. It is a stock bolt with ICS, never touched. Basically i want to be able to use my wifi hotspot and see if i can get my phone working a little smoother. Question 1. All i need to do root this phone is the Run the correct program but i've seen two different methods to this. ONe is to run the 1 click root listed n the above post. But i see on another thread it says to use the root method availabe at infectedrom. Do they both work? Then after i run the correct root program i should flash a new rom which SanTod has a great one at infectedrom too. My question here is what is the easiest method to flashing a rom? There seems to be several different directions on this too.
The one click method might give you root but you won't be unlocked or s off. The current method for unlocking ICS is long and could be difficult so if you go that route set aside some time and get ready to post questions on the forum so folks can help.

Ok I see what your saying. But if i root can i remove the tetherguard so i can activate my wifi hotspot? Or do i need s-off to do that?
I'm not real sure but you could flash a custom ROM with that already removed once you are unlocked and s off. I'm pretty sure that tether guard is integrated into the framework and requires more than just removing the app.

First off thanks for responding.
2nd, can u point me in the right direction on rooting this device and then applying a new Rom. I see different methods on different forums. I just want to make sure I'm doing the safest and easiest method. Should do the method from infectedrom?

Yea use the infectedrom guide. Some others day to use the wrong image name for some of the files and that will confuse you. Plus there are lots of users that will help you with anything you you are not sure of. Follow the steps in the guide in the exact order they are listed.

Sense 5 OTA?

Any word on whether or not HTC/Verizon will be sending out an OTA update containing sense 5 to our Dna?
I want sense 5, but I'm not looking to root since I think flashing roms contributed to some of the problems I had with my old phone.

Probably later in the year, like Q3 or Q4

Yep, if that fast , but even if they do it won't be as good as any of the sense 5 roms we currently have.
But @op, what issues do you think root causes. Having root only fixes problems( wakelock, no menu button, persistent notifications, etc), not causes them.

If you have root or S-OFF someone who wanted to collect your personal information with physical access to the device could simply boot into recovery or fastboot and save a nandroid backup of the device to an external flash drive, then access the partitions on a computer. once you have s-off unless you fully encrypt the data partition, your data is unsecured.

I could just take someones phone and root it and then do the same. If someone really wants your data there is always a way to get it.

2 things.
1, unless you are a spy and have state secrets on your phone, why would anyone do that.
2, that wouldn't even work on my phone, and many others. My recovery doesn't have otg support and my phone has face unlock, so there would be no way for someone to get the nandroid off my phone.

no you couldn't, HTC developed the unlock code to erase everything when you are going from a lock to an unlocked state.
This article says we're getting it in a few weeks.

Cremacious if you would like to further discuss root or anything, feel free to send me a PM. I understand your concern and I know where you're coming from, and I might have some info that could be useful. Would love to talk more through Gtalk or PM.

You would think that with HTC not doing too well that they would try and up their reputation and push updates quickly as they could, or at least that what I would do to bring in customers if I ran a business. I'm pretty happy with the current version of Sense, but the new look of Sense 5 looks great to me. The design of the icons and UI is a big improvement.
The problem I had with my old phone is that the call quality dropped by a huge amount on anything other than stock. I tried to flash multiple radios to try and fix it and it didn't help. Roms also tended to lag for me a lot, which is probably something on my end, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to fix it.
Its going to be one HECK of a download 900+ MB.

ota's are patch roms generally....they only add whats new to the existing rom and firmware (even going from one version of android to another; in this case 4.1.1 to 4.2.2)
if you look at an otapackage you'll see a lot of "p" files that just the patch
id guess the ota will be somewhere in the range of 400-600 mbs, and it silently downloads in the background over a period of time as well....so its not like you are prompted to download and install the ota and then have to sit around for awhile

Ya but we all know that as soon as the download is available most of us will be hitting the check for download button repeatedly.. but still a decent size download.

It's not HTC's decision as to when ota's come out for our phone, it's Verizon's.

I have a feeling it won't be an Ota but an update you need to be connected to htc sync to download. Like how Samsung pushed JB to the s2 through Kies

Is there a root method for Verizon One Max on 4.4.2?

Yesterday I updated my Verizon HTC One Max to 4.4.2 via OTA update. Is it possible to root this phone on that firmware? I am asking because I'm reading conflicting information on root only available for 4.3 devices but then I have seen people selling 4.4.2 rooted on eBay. Please someone guide me. Thanks in advance!
Also I am interested in ROOT only. I don't want to flash any custom roms or anything. Thanks.
Did you try towelroot?
Try a program called sunshine. It will get you on the right track. It does cost $25, but it works.
Thats the way I had to go sunshine 25.00 I tried everything else and nothing worked for me but that program for the OTA sense 6
I'm going to be in the same boat tomorrow. Finally putting my rezound to rest and getting a one max and keeping my verizon unlimited. Looking to root, debloat, and wifi tether.
Assuming the phone I'm going to look at will be updated to the latest... if this program works and is easy for $25 bucks... sweet. I have modified mogul, incredible, thunderbolt, and rezound without paying much besides donating or puying a few pro versions of apps. Mainly just rooted and flashed debloated stock roms. Nothing heavy.

Likewise, just bought a VZW OneMax off Swappa and will be here on Thursday. I don't mind supporting developers who create quality apps/ROMS for us. Well worth it!
So...I haven't tried anything yet. Just got the phone and did a factory reset. Its 4.4.2 sense 6.0 3.09.605.2 (verizon obviously)
I'm really just looking for a stock rooted rom, that is debloated, or that I can erase a bunch of dumb apps myself. Then just need to add wifi tether.
I have messed with these things before but the last time was when i got the incredible, tbolt, and rezound on their launch days... so its been awhile. haha
Wondering what type of things I should be gathering for running the sunshine?
Is this what I am to expect???
1. run sunshine
2. install twrp
3. flash this.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2768021
4. Enjoy?? ha

Only 3.5 Hours from first sitting down with the phone, to figure out how to do all that work, and having all of the apps installed and in their place. Now to find a wifi tether app that works (or figure out the "wifi tether" app settings) and not let the OCD get to me of having an extra set of icons on every screen. I've had the same 4x4 home screen layouts for years. Rest easy Rezound.
Thanks for all the help. Appreciate it!!

I didn't try the red "mobile hotspot" app.... and I deleted it thru titanium backup without saving a backup first
I always used "wifi tether for root users" on the rezound and tbolt. I know it was finicky with the order that you checked all of the different settings. Once you figured out the order and things to check, it works flawlessly. I'm not picky though and will use whatever tether app that works...
Must. Use. Slingbox. At. Cabin.

Derp dirty flash that Rom again. That app was wide open for use. You don't need to mess with root hotspot apps.

Does that mean just go back into recovery and reflash the same way?
I assume it will just fill back in the apps i deleted and not mess with any of the rest of the crap I added and setup?
