No. They are two completely different recoveries made by two different teams. Some people will say CWM is the best, some will say TWRP is the best. I have used both, TWRP on the 3d and CWM on the hero.

there is some cross compatibility depending on which version of each recovery.
i know both recoveries use the same/similar methods to backup the kernel, i.e. dump the whole kernel partition to an image file.
twrp calls this file: boot.win and cwm calls it boot.img. they are the same file and same file type even though the "extension" is different. the extension doesnt matter in linux, so the only difference is irrelevant regarding content type.
i know twrp still dumps the system and data partitions to an image. i know cwm used to dump them to an image but i think recently cwm switched to created .tar files for system and data partitions? not sure, would have to double check that.

as the person said before, you can load certain things from some backups. but they are not fully reflashable in both recoveries. i tried TWR but i didnt like it as much as CWM. koush's recovery is very simply and straight forward. but its honestly all preference.

I had cwm, but switched twrp Recently. Cwm is a nice basic recovery. Twrp has some more advanced features. Personally, I've gotten pretty familiar with twrp and I prefer it over Cwm.
Specifically... I like the ability to flash Multiple zips in a row. I also like the ability to wipe straight from the flash zip menu. I also like that it is themeable. That's my 2c.

TWRP until there are OTHER options then I shall evaluate them all.
I'm just a user here @Xda-Developers and I'm planning on using TWRP unless an alternative appears that everyone thinks is more beneficial.
I am a dev, most likely will use my own recovery, I installed TWRP right now to see if I like it or not.

Is the teamwin recovery lots better than cwm? I installed clockwork no problem but if others think it would be more beneficial to install the other then I feel like I should do that. Also I don't know how the support will be for cwm and our device. Anyway, any info would be appreciated.

CWM, regular user...can i just use the TWRP image and put it on my sd card and flash it thru hboot or do i have to use ADB?
I am power xda/user/tweaker/techie and have always used and liked ClockworkMod Recovery. Luckily, I was one of few that the Revolutionary exploit worked when pushing CWMR to my Evo 3D! :-D

I plan to use TWRP on my HTC EVO 3D. If amon develops one, i may check it out also. I have never been a fan of CWM.

while i was rooting it asked me if i wanted to install cwm automatically so i did cus i didnt want to mess with adb and now all this talk about twrp is making me regret it.... can i just flash twrp through cwm???
teamwin for now, if amon_ra comes along ill switch to it.

When I rooted my device, I installed Clockworkmod instead of th TWRP. I have been reading that Team Win's recovery is superior to Clockwork. For this reason, I am interested in transitioning to TWRP. Are there any additional steps which need to be taken, or may I install it according to the instructions provided.

The general instructions will get you by ok.
Clockwork has improved & is good if you like ROM Manager. It had a so-so history with wiping.
TeamWin's has an awesome Flash/Zip queue for multiple file flashes. I went TWRP for that feature.

Yep. CWM backups are the raw .img files. Teamwin uses a slightly different format which is supposed to be better/faster.
So, I'm pretty new to flashing roms, and unlocking bootloaders, and all this stuff. I got my first android phone a little over a year ago. And after about a year of reading xda, and other android blogs I finally felt comfortable enough to start flashing different roms.
But one thing I've been wondering is what's the difference between ClockworkMod Recovery and TWRP? And is there's any reasons one is better than the other? On my Atrix I've been using ClockworkMod, but on my Kindle Fire I put TWRP.
And one other question I have is, what is a nandroid backup? Is it any different from a standard backup on Clockwork Mod or TWRP?

Mostly just personal preference. Some people prefer the robustness CWM while others like the touch interface of TWRP. Sometimes it is necessary to install a certain ROM/mod/whatever through a certain recovery (which is then mentioned in the install instructions), but other than that either is good.

Both of those recoveries (and any other recoveries I've ever heard of) produce nandroid backups.

Koushik basically has the option of making recovery porting easier, since there's no CWM here really, I've built both a touch and non touch versions.
Basically these are just the img files, I prefer not to make a flashable zip until some test it to confirm both work, I have a few ideas to build better versions, though I don't really see the need at the moment to implement though with 4EXT around, it's still good to have options.

what i don't understand with 4ext is that u need superuser to install it, but u need a custome recovery to install superuser, seems like dead loop? correct me if im wrong.
Install 4ext recovery first. Then if you want you can install the control application on Android which requires superuser.
Also, is this the latest version with incremental back ups?

You don't need superuser to install 4EXT, it can be installed via fastboot like any other recovery.

CWM has incremental backups now? All I can tell you is that it's the latest version for both touch and regular cwm recovery.
I was able to load the CWM Touch without S-Offing and flash my first Amaze ROM (successfully is TBD though)
How do you flash these via fastboot? Do I have to rename them?
Can someone tell me pros and cons of both 4ext recovery and cwm touch. Which one is better? I have 4ext, no issues so not sure if I should change it.

yes it also supports the very important smart flash feature which helps users flash kernels properly without being S-OFF
Going to re-root again and probably ROM again, debating between TWRP and Amon Ra, is one any better than the other?
Probably going to ROM with Infection or XenonHD, is either one preferred with those ROMs?
Twrp is more updated and in newer ROMs there may be an update system included and to have the update automatically install for you when you click update, the recovery needs to support something called "open script" I believe that's what its called. And amon ra doesn't support that but twrp and cwm do, I actually switched from amon ra to twrp and I like it way better and the open script comes in handy when you don't want to manually install zips or updates.

I was using TWRP for a while with no issue and liked it. Then for some reason it started having an issue with not restoring new backups. Didn't try to reinstall but moved to CWM Touch. I like it but backups are not compatible between the two and TWRP does have more features.

Doesn't CWM Touch have the dead battery bug where it won't let the battery charge if it goes completely dead? Or has that been fixed, it would be real deal breaker for me...

Yes. I prefer twrp but occasionally run into a rom/kernel that won't flash. I keep amon ra to flash on those occasions then reinstall twrp with the goomanager app

I've never had problems with twrp on backups or installs. I've only used and been on the latest 2.5.0.0 version though
So idk if you we're on a older version or something
And you should be able to flash a recovery on top of another it just replaces the recovery.img and ROM performance shouldn't be effected by the recovery. That doesn't really make sense so use the one you want
