Recovery - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I'm pretty new to flashing roms, and unlocking bootloaders, and all this stuff. I got my first android phone a little over a year ago. And after about a year of reading xda, and other android blogs I finally felt comfortable enough to start flashing different roms.
But one thing I've been wondering is what's the difference between ClockworkMod Recovery and TWRP? And is there's any reasons one is better than the other? On my Atrix I've been using ClockworkMod, but on my Kindle Fire I put TWRP.
And one other question I have is, what is a nandroid backup? Is it any different from a standard backup on Clockwork Mod or TWRP?
Thank You

Mostly just personal preference. Some people prefer the robustness CWM while others like the touch interface of TWRP. Sometimes it is necessary to install a certain ROM/mod/whatever through a certain recovery (which is then mentioned in the install instructions), but other than that either is good.

Both of those recoveries (and any other recoveries I've ever heard of) produce nandroid backups.

Thanks for the info

Clockworkmod to TWRP

When I rooted my device, I installed Clockworkmod instead of th TWRP. I have been reading that Team Win's recovery is superior to Clockwork. For this reason, I am interested in transitioning to TWRP. Are there any additional steps which need to be taken, or may I install it according to the instructions provided.
Thanks!
Steven
The general instructions will get you by ok.
Clockwork has improved & is good if you like ROM Manager. It had a so-so history with wiping.
TeamWin's has an awesome Flash/Zip queue for multiple file flashes. I went TWRP for that feature.
Twrp ftw!

Thanks for the replies! I just wanted to make sure no files from CWM would linger if I switched.
Thanks!

Nope, from what I understand your CWM backups will not work though

Yep. CWM backups are the raw .img files. Teamwin uses a slightly different format which is supposed to be better/faster.

Are nandroid backups made with twrp compatible with cwm? And what's the best recovery?

No. They are two completely different recoveries made by two different teams. Some people will say CWM is the best, some will say TWRP is the best. I have used both, TWRP on the 3d and CWM on the hero.

there is some cross compatibility depending on which version of each recovery.
i know both recoveries use the same/similar methods to backup the kernel, i.e. dump the whole kernel partition to an image file.
twrp calls this file: boot.win and cwm calls it boot.img. they are the same file and same file type even though the "extension" is different. the extension doesnt matter in linux, so the only difference is irrelevant regarding content type.
i know twrp still dumps the system and data partitions to an image. i know cwm used to dump them to an image but i think recently cwm switched to created .tar files for system and data partitions? not sure, would have to double check that.
hope that helps!
as the person said before, you can load certain things from some backups. but they are not fully reflashable in both recoveries. i tried TWR but i didnt like it as much as CWM. koush's recovery is very simply and straight forward. but its honestly all preference.
Cool. Figured I'd ask cuz I'm fresh over to the 3D from the EVO 4G and I know amon ra recovery was better than cwm

I had cwm, but switched twrp Recently. Cwm is a nice basic recovery. Twrp has some more advanced features. Personally, I've gotten pretty familiar with twrp and I prefer it over Cwm.
Specifically... I like the ability to flash Multiple zips in a row. I also like the ability to wipe straight from the flash zip menu. I also like that it is themeable. That's my 2c.

[Q] CWM Recovery

Im sorry i haven't really been able to do too much research myself (im in the middle of a move and things have been hectic), but im wondering if the recovery im using still up to code. Lol
I use the Rom Manager (the one u can get off the market), is this recovery still acceptable or is it dated? I have been flashing just fine with it, but with things moving the way of ICS i wanna make sure im up to date.
That recovery should be fine, but I think most people, myself included, prefer Romracer's recovery. I'd flash that if I were you.

Will there be any difference/benefits in ROMracer's over ROM Manager, or are u just saying its just a slightly better option/future proof?

Romracers has a couple of extra options. I believe one of them may be the choice to nandroid backup to either internal or external SDCard, but it's been so long I forget. Romracers has pretty much become the standard with the Atrix. So, in essence a slightly better option. I may need to be corrected, but I think some people have had problems flashing particular ROM's, radios, kernels, etc. with the ROM Manager version.
If you want you could also download CWM Touch through ROM Manager, but once again, the option to backup to external is not there.

Thanks a lot. I mainly wanted to stick with ROM Manager cuz its simple. Lol
I will take ur advice and switch to ROM Racers (once i read up and learn how to). I have never deleted and installed a new recovery, but its something i need to learn anyways so i will take the plunge. Thanks a lot.

You don't need to delete anything. Just download one of the Romracer zip files, (there are a few because you can have different colours), put the zip on your sdcard, and flash it with the current ROM Manager recovery you have just like you would flash anything else. It will replace it.

[Q] TWRP and restore

Just got my Prime and updated to .28 then rooted it ,unlocked the bootloader, installed CWM and finally installed TWRP. Booted into TWRP and made a backup. Now I want to install a ROM once I do that and I want to restore to the backup of the orig. with unlocked bootloader can I do that (use that backup) or will I brick it by using this backup...
Thanks in advance.

You can absolutely use twrp to restore a backup you have made with it. If I understand correctly you want to flash a new rom to play around with it, but ultimately go back to where you are at right now. Yes, you can do that.

Thanks for the quick reply, yes I am planning on playing with some ROMS and have the fail safe of returning to the orig asus unlocked image that I backed up if I wanted to...
Thanks
Hey guys I actually did this exact same thing and after restoring my backup my apps aren't installing. About half of my apps are there but the other just aren't there. What would the reason be that's causing this

I would be a little hesitant to use TWRP at this point. Some users, including myself, have been experiencing soft bricks when restoring. The problem seems to be that the kernel is not properly restored for some users using TWRP. If you really feel compelled to use this, I would have a kernel.zip on your sdcard (like one of motley's) so you can boot your restored rom. Otherwise you are going to have to restore using fastboot. Personally, I would rather use CWM until they have figured why some people are having this problem.
Interesting, was unaware of the twrp issue. The latest crm is unable to create backups. Guess i could use an older version of crm.

If you check the TWRP thread in the dev section there are people complaining about this. I hope they sort it out soon because it has some really cool features.
I am using Roach's repacked CWM touch which works just fine. You can d/l it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601942
Greatly appreciate the advice. I have installed Roach's repacked CWM and creating a backup now. Whats the best ROM in your opinion that I should try...
Thanks for all the help.

There's the million dollar question! First I would decide if you want a stock or non-stock rom. If you want the ASUS experience, I would try Virtuous. Diamondback makes solid roms. If not, your choices are basically AOKP, CM9, team Eos or Gummy. I have used them all a lot and prefer CM9. I am using Makelegs' CM9 Skankwich kang and think it is really solid. I will be sticking with it for a while, which is something I have found difficult to do! AOKP is really good rom too, but you will have to look on Rootzwiki for that.
A lot of it comes down to personal preference. If you have the patience I would give them all a go and see which works best for you. Flashing is generally very safe as long as you have a backup and a rom on your sdcard. I have had a load of fun messing with all the different roms.

Updating Clockwork Mod Recovery

I currently have CWM Recovery 5.0.2.6 and I'm on CM9 RC1. I want to update to RC2 but I want to backup first. Backup in recovery keeps failing ("Error while making a backup image of /data!"). I thought I'd try updating to the latest version (6.0.1.0), but I can't find a clear answer on this (I read multiple posts on these forums): can I just flash it using the update from zip option in recovery? (I think you have to do it twice in a row?) Thanks.

From what I've heard you should never update CWM. Also are you backing up in recovery? or Using (God forbid) Rom Manager
CWM is easy to install.
There are two methods that I know of.
The first being using ROM manager though it could (ironically) break it and your device end up in a soft brick.
The second is to manually push it using adb, but first you must download the CWM for our phone (i777) from the clockwork mod website.

Don't tell him to use rom manager.
CWM is part of the kernel on our phones, so you would have to find a kernel with the version of CWM you want to install and flash that to update it.
Are you sure you have enough free space on your SD card to do a backup?
I am using recovery, not rom manager. If I shouldn't update it, how should I backup without getting that error?

I can't stress this enough to people.
For the ATT Samsung Galaxy S2, model SGH-I77, ClockworkMod is a custom recovery built into a custom kernel. It is not separate and you do not flash or update it separately. Please do not attempt to update ClockworkMod at all, this will only result in a soft brick.
As mvi57 said, if you want a newer version of CWM, you'll have to find a custom I777 kernel which has the newer version built in.
I wish we could place this warning somewhere where newbies can see it while trying to flash stuff. I'm glad we caught OP before he soft bricked. OP, I don't mean to make you sound stupid or anything by such a highlighted post, I just want to warn as many newbies as possible, and I'm hoping they see your thread and thus this post.

That was it. I had past backups taking up space. Thanks.
Also, when I backup my phone to my computer (manually), some files don't copy over (I'm pretty sure it's because the file names are horrendously long). Is there a way I can get around this?
And karate, I take no offense to that. I prefer clear posts like yours, and I actually remember that it's part of a kernel now. I knew back when I first rooted, but forgot, as I'm sure many do. Maybe it should be added to a sticky about updating?

Just install the latest cm9 nightly for the i777. It will install cwm 6.0.1.1... our device is different than others, cwm must be built into the kernal.
