hi there i bought a tomtec game 7 with android 2.3 is it nessesary to root it? and my battery life is short what can i do about that?
Sent from my android using xda premium
Well, it's never necessary to root your device. Rooting is required in order for some advanced applications to work, such as traffic dumpers, market enabler, root explorer, some backup utilities & call recorders, etc. For the normal use of the phone, it may not be required to root it.
Also, rooting your device may void your warranty.
ok thanks. but its not a phone but a game tablet only got android 2.3 and i want to upgrade it to 3.1 and with rooting i can do that like cynacanmod
Sent from my android using xda premium
I don't see official CM support for your device. Anyway, to flash CM you'll most probably need to unlock bootloader first. Doesn't the manufacturer provides a 3.1 Update?
there are no updates for this device and the manufacturer dont make updates.
but should it be possible?

Because of the open nature of android, it's theorically possible to install Android on any device(There's even a port of Android to x86). But there's some work before making android work on any device. I'm not myself a ROM developer, so I don't know exactly what is required to port android to a specific device, or how much effort it takes, but it certainly takes a while
If you've got your device rooted, on one hand you get advanced features such as CPU freq scaling (may help battery life ), on the other hand the phone becomes less secured, you can even destroy the device with a few clicks.
Battery problem: slow down the cpu, dimmer the display, that't all (because mobile signal tricks don't work for tablets
ok thanks all

He is right. With a rooted device you can save your battery life by scalings and installing pro applications to control the drain.
Battery Life
Hi, me and friends who have rooted and flashed custom roms all found that the battery life was better with these, personally it was the best thing i did - more options for having it how you want etc
Mike.
Root it. You just might learn something in the process.
thanks all it will work great when i am done with it
Rooting is the way to go!
SetCPU is a great app for setting profiles the for the CPU to follow.
When charging, I have mine run at 100%.
When the screen is off, I have the CPU scale way back to save battery life.
Works great and is very easy to configure!
You will have more options if you root it.

Slow with opening apps? Or slow user interface? It shouldn't be slow unless he has tonnes of apps.

Do not make him buy a new phone, this phone can be hella snappy actually!
Start by rooting your phone, you can easily find a tutorial just by searching the forum or via google.
My personal preference:
ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292
Tweak: V6 SuperCharger Update 9 Beta 6.2.2 (tutorial here)
When installing the tweak, chose option 7 (agressive for 512HP)
APPS: Autostart (find it in market)), preventing useless apps to start, but you must have chose the apps manually.
Auto Memory Manager(find it in market), chose agressive and save the changes.
If he is new at these sort of stuff it could take some time to get it right but it's totally worth spending a day fixing it, he'll get a fast a snappy phone in long term.
Has he tried using the task manager to clear memory? It sounds like he downloaded an application that doesn't behave the way it should (memory/cpu hog). If clearing memory helps he has to find and uninstall the misbehaving app(s), i think there's an app called watchdog or something which monitors memory and cpu usage of all installed apps.
If that doesn't help, go i'd go for a reset. And before buying a new phone, give the custom roms a go because they do tend to increase performance quite a bit!
Thankyou for the quick replies everyone very helpful, he gets force closes on twitter and facebook all the time and also it just randomly shuts down aswell.

hi! regarding the suggested tweak? is there a detailed summary on how to use and instal this type of tweak? ive been reading the post and it seems it only has the overview.. thanks!
my advice is just forget all those mumbo jumbo tweak script. its already incorporated in cfroot kernel. its also doesnt make sense. all it does is doing the same thing. tweak vm dirty, tweak minfree, tweak stagefright and so on with the only difference is the fancy mancy name to make it looks yummy. people just install 2-3 script with different name when all it does is the same, and u actually already done it when using cfroot.
You might also want to avoid CM because it's unstable, just flash a stable custom rom that's still in active development. Make sure to get the latest cfroot kernel version.

They have, but UK operators are notoriously slow with pushing their own, branded versions. Especially on a midrange phone like the Ace. Avoid CM, especially Grif's as that has quite a few bugs. Some bugs in Cyanoace but not as many from my experience.
For starters, root your phone (or get a custom rom with integrated custom root), than download Titanium Backup from Market, and then uninstall all the unnecessary apps, also, delete app and internet cache. That all should make your phone better than new
I would agree about using cfroot.
Root phone with cfroot, titaniumbackup pro backup to sdcard, factory reset, download mode and flash latest stock rom from sammobile.com, root again and then restore apps only, only restore app+data for games.

- Unroot
- Try using a different rom
Try other apps that do the same thing.
sent from an HTC sensation on CM7 alpha #10
Try OTA Rootkeeper by supercurio https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
With this you can temporarily unroot. Try that out and see if those apps work afterwards.
Its possible that certain apps can detect root and as a result disable some functionality. I can't imagine why a Jenga app would have this though.

I've tried that doing the temporary unroot with that app, and it still doesn't show in the Market... Though I'm not sure if it really had effect. Is there any way to check besides the app itself telling me I have unrooted?

Just try to run an app that requires root to function. It if works normally, then you still have root. If to want to try a specific app, get Terminal Emulator and type "su" without the quotation marks. If you get '#' back then you have root.
Another thing to try is to search for your apps (Jenga etc) from the Web android market and install your apps from there http://market.android.com

No, I barely changed anything since this started happening... The earliest I remember noticing this was a bit after changing my kernel from the stock one to Eugene's.
I'm not sure if that is the cause of the problem... I can't remember if it happened after I rooted but before I changed the kernel (when I was completely stock with the exception of the root).
Perhaps your new ROM has a different build.prop that indicates incompatibility with certain apps.
You can try comparing your current build.prop with the build.prop from your backup.
It is possible that an app could try to detect that you have rooted, and refuse to run. However, I happen to have Jenga on my rooted Android tablet, so (unless it is terribly inconsistent at finding detecting it) that doesn't seem to be the case here.

The build.prop will have a few changes, but it will still have the same device properties.
I had a similar problem- turned out to be permissions settings- the apps you are trying to load may require more permissions than you have set- I found by enabling them all, the prob was solved

Hi all,
I bought my neo v last week and it was brilliant for 4-5 days. But nowadays the phone response very slow. When I come out of any app the icons take time show up. Earlier it happened only when I came out of games like temple run. Now I've uninstalled it. Now even when I came out if messaging or camera, the icons take time to build.
Sometimes during a call incoming, it takes long time to show the contract details.
Should I do something to check if everything is fine with the phone. I really doubt it is the speed of a 1 ghz processor. Also the ram has only around 50 mb free even only music player is running.
I've installed avira, which I suspect could be the reason for this slowdown. Im unable to uninstall either.
Could someone please help me with these for a android new comer? Please let me know if u needed more details to help me out.
Sent from my MT11i using XDA
Avira could be the cause, is it installed from market?
Find it Play or the phone's manage application screen to uninstall.
If it is still that slow then try a master reset, anyway it is just 4-5 days' thing to lose.
use superchager v6

If you want to stop the bloatwares, you really need to root. You can freeze them or uninstall them permanently, just make some back ups. Have you tried resetting it? I mean factory settings reset? You should try it. Dont install battery savers, task killers and antivirus. It may slow down your phone and eats up your battery. Its better to restart your phone daily to free ram and reset it. If you have done everything but it still becomes slow, contact your phone dealer. You just might have yourself a factory defect phone
like what other said, root your phone or better yet, use custom roms. those bloatware is eating your ram thats why your phone is sluggish. as pandemic said use v6 supercharger to handle the memory.
It is a primitive sort of advice but if u don't want to root your phone...then try auto memory manager and set a parameter to autokill background processes...the processes u don't want to be killed can be whitelisted.
And try some kind of startup manager to prevent unwanted apps from launching by their own...but even then some of them would initialize bcoz of other events...that's where auto memory manager comes to play.
But last advice...its really a very good idea to root your phone to gain full control...service centres really don't care if you are rooted or not unless you unlock the bootloader.
Edit: am not sure if startup managers require root or not...it would have been stated in the app description.

My dad has a vizio tablet and is very disappointed with the performance of it. I've told him if there was a custom ROM I could install to it, it would delete the unnecessary bloatware and speed it up but I haven't found anyway to root or a custom recovery or ROM for it. Your in luck, vtab with Honeycomb was just finally rooted (link below). No ROMs yet (no custom kernels), but you can get App Quarantine, Root Uninstall, etc and have at it. I tried using greenify, but didn't like having to manually hibernate running apps myself as not rooted.
Could anyone suggest the best memory/battery life saver app etc I should use.

1. Battery saving, ram freeing or any of those apps never work, they harm more then they do good
~Greenify is one that does
2. An app that helps alot with battery life is Unbounce or nlpunbouncer, its an xposed module which stops GAPPS from keeping your device awake for %25 of the time
Xposed module requires xposed installer and that requires root
Thanks. So I'd need to root my phone to get this app then?

If you dont know much about rooting then leave it in the dust
And rooting is safe if you have common sense ;D
If any questions ask
I suggest greenify and stamina mode which you can find under power options, best you can do for battery life without root
Thanks
I already use stamina and just got greenify. My battery is kinda good but I just like to open up my device to more.

Rooting and flashing are safe and they arent at the same time
Its all down to your common sense and reading
Rooting alone will grant alot more control and customization/modding
Flashing alows even more freedom but you are restricted by a locked bootloader (not recomended unlocking untill you know more)
Flashing custom roms there are a couple of things you should know
~if your bootloader is locked then you can only flash stock based custom roms
~flash roms only For your Xperia Z2, this applies for alot of mods, usualy try picking from the z2 sections
Right ok cool.
That's what I'd like to do. Customise and have more control.
I just don't really understand some things I read about it. I just need to read up on it and get to know everything
