Looks like the Droid Eris finaly got moved and is not on the main list of devices anymore. Hopefully that doesn't change developers minds about doing anything for our little Eris anymore. So sad...
We stuck in there tho for a while!

This happened once before and we were able to get it back on the main list. Instead of banishing phones to the graveyard, they should restructure how they organize the variious phones. They aren't very open to making changes though as it's been brought up before. I'd prefer sections for HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony, etc that then goes to a list of their phones or something similar
They kept the og droid forum which doesn't have much development going on but has the name recognition but lack any ICS development as far as I can tell. Among other suspect choices, they also kept the wildfire forums around...the phone that ported our eris ICS build lol. Less than a month ago there was a portal story about the first group of phones that had running ICS builds...that group included the eris, heroc, and gsm hero which are now all relegated to the legacy forum. Thank you xda for agreeing with Verizon that the eris, and other capable phones, are no longer worth your time
WTF?? I logged on this morning and started scrolling down to find the eris section and.......nothing??? Hopefully goose, shed, CS and the other bad asses who have kept the eris on top will stay around for a little longer.....my wife just got the Verizon Inc2 and i hate to say it but i might have to go get one. Anyways thanx to everyone in the eris section, not just devs, but EVERYONE, its allowed me to show off to all my family and friends who thought their brand new phones were the $hit, til they seen what my old eris is runnin!!
LONG LIVE THE ERIS
still in the same spot its always been if you use the compact forum view!!!

Yeah when it happened last time I yelled at Svetius and he put it back, this forum is more active than most of the other devices on the site like every windows phone that is added every day.
Cheers everyone, always loved the Eris since the day it came out

Hey Guys,
I believe that we should make a petition to get moved back out of Legacy. There are many of us still here within our two year contract with this phone, and obviously with three active gingerbread ROMs there is still plenty of development going on with this phone. I may be a sore loser, but I don't want to see my phone legacied while I'm still stuck with it for awhile. Sign this thread if you agree, and hopefully we will get enough posts to get noticed.

LOL calm down guys, I sent svetius (one of the head moderators at xda) a pm telling him about how the Eris forums are still very very active and shouldn't have been moved and his reply was that they are working on getting it fixed. We're still going to be in the Legacy Devices section, however, they are trying hard to fix the issue with the Eris forums no longer being available on the xda app.
Eh, I'm calm enough, I just feel that justice should be done, and there should be set rule's on when stuff becomes legacy. It makes no sense to me why we are legacy, yet older phones remain on the main page.

Yeah that is actually making a lot of people mad (me included). Phones like the G1 still have not been moved to legacy, yet we are now running 2.3 on our devices and get moved. Eh, hopefully it will all get worked out though.
I asked specifically about the G1 vs. Eris, and the reply I got is that the "legacy" decision is not made on the basis of handset age or capability alone - the amount of traffic on each device's forum is part of the decision.
The G1 - because it was sort of the first (US) Android phone - apparently has an active forum. No gingerbread for the G1 at this time, though
I can sort of see the logic, as the idea is likely to keep "most" of the site's users happy; OTOH, as soon as you introduce judgement calls into the process, you're gonna end up with people who feel slighted when they are on the receiving end of the "legacy" scarlet letter.
Whatever. There are lots of phones, most of which have market life cycles of 1 year, and XDA tries to cover WinMo, Android, (and now apparently the Iphone, too?) - it's their website to do as they see fit.
Whether the Eris is labeled as current or legacy, I don't forsee lots of new devs joining the ranks of Eris. I sure am glad for the ones we have, though.
bftb0
I really don't see an issue. As bftfb0 says, we're likely not getting any more devs. Most eris users don't have much longer on their contracts (obviously not all of them) and chances are if there were a dev out there... we'd have gotten their attention already.
Besides, being labeled legacy isn't going to change anything. This device is nearly... what 3 years old? 2? That's a long time for phones.

It was first sold in the first week of November, 2009. That makes it a little over 1 year, 3 months.
The (HTC) T-mobile G1 - with less RAM, less ROM, and a older MSM72xx processor - but clocked at the same speed (528 Mhz), started shipping in October 2008 - 2 years, 4 months old. I think that was the first Android phone sold directly by a major US carrier.
I guess I'm starting to see the logic, but my biggest issue is now I cannot read it on my G-Tablet or my Eris. If they get legacy into tapatalk or their app, ill be happy again.
I vote for changing "Legacy" to "Older devices" where the sole deciding factor is age, then sorting phones by forum activity. Thank this post if you agree.
After all, NOBODY can argue the Eris's age.
Just got a message from svetius and he said the new app version which should release in a week or so will have access to legacy.

Hello,
I'll cut to the chase cause i have a tendency to drag out the tiniest detail for ages, and i just wanna ask this XD
Basically, i have a Galaxy S II, and i love it, i started hacking it around august after owning it since the UK launch. I like to see myself as fairly competant when it comes to NOT permabricking it, however i still am hesitant to flash new roms, kernels cause of lingering fears.
So! What i came here to ask, is i am planning to purchase a second phone just for this reason, and have been looking at the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and original Galaxy S. Sadly i dont know much about the hacking scene of every other phone, so i dont really know what other choices there are.
Basically, what phone would you reccomend, even if i havent mentioned it, to buy purely for the community behind it?
Thanks,
Katy
The HTC Vision (aka the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) has a great community of developers, cookers, and users. I was hesitant to start flashing custom ROMs initially after rooting as well. So I went back and hacked my old Motorola Cliq to test things out. I promise you if you can read and follow directions you'll have no problems flashing ROMs... there's a great variety of ROMs for the Vision and I expect in the not too distant future we'll also see Ice Cream Sandwich.

I would beg to differ on the previous HTC comment. I have an Evo. It's getting up in age, but I love it. There are tons of roms available for it, and even though development has slowed, you'd still be surprised at the amount of development happening. If you're looking for a phone solely for playing with, you'd have plenty of options with the Evo. You can get one fairly cheap, especially if you opt for one with a bad ESN - which you might as well since you won't be activating it.
It's nearly impossible to brick - the only way you could would be to pull the battery during a radio update.
Of course which phone you get depends on your wants and needs. Check out the development subforums for the devices you have in mind.

Nexus one and evo is different. Doesn't like HTC due to not giving out updates that they promised. Eg: HTC flyer is still in GB. If you wanted a true unbrickable phone, get a developers' phone. Instant update and super extremely easy to unlock. And it is fit for every update to give you full user experience.

The HD2 is an option too. Getting seriously old (but that much as dual core has still to be really used by the OS) but it sill has a lot of development going on, kernel and ROM wise...MIUI, CM7, Sense, WP7 and WinMo etc.
As a former Eris owner, I just wanted to stop by and say hi. This was my first Android and I loved it.
I'd also like to advise you guys when you do update your phones, HTC has the best rom communities in most cases. HTC phones typically get the most rom development. If you love the Eris community (which is one of the best in my opinion) , you may want to consider sticking with HTC. With some Androids, they have a very limited selection of roms. coming from an Eris, that may leave you disappointed.

I am thinking about replacing my Eris after I cracked the screen when it fell out of my pocket during a traffic stop (no one got a ticket). I hate contracts and don't want to to pay big money (over 150) on a phone. So that leaves me in the used phone arena.
I would want a phone with lots of support from this type of group and one with 4g speed. So my question is what would yall recommend? Or do I just bite the bullet and be locked in with Verizon for another two years?

Go to Craigslist and look for an Android. I.see the thunderbolt always sselling for around $200 used on there (little more than the 150 you want, but no 2 year contract). That will also give you a phone with a good rom development community. Trust me, it has one of the best rom.development communities of the 4g phones on Verizon.

Thanks for the info!
Just sold my two Erises on CL, coudln't have made it this long without gingershedbread from workshed. I went with Evo, another family member went with Optimus. I must say I have a hard time recommending any LG phone. The optimus is speedy but almost no support for it at all though there is a CM7 version that has been ported, thank goodness for that. But I agree with what has been said about htc phones and forums, lots of support. Good luck!
I decided to go with the HTC Thunderbolt. Now to figure out which Rom to flash it with. The even bigger question is do I give my Eris to my daughter or do I keep it to play with?
It was really tough replacing my Eris! : )
Again thanks to all who have contributated to the development of the roms. It is greatly appreciated.
The thunderbolt has plenty of roms to play with. Let your daughter experience the wonders of android.
I hope I helped you choose a phone that you will love and not one you will kick yourself in the ass everyday over (like I did with the LG revolution). While I like Motorola because of the battery life and the quality of production, HTC is where it's at for roms. My love for Android began with the Eris and I hope I can help anyone who still has it, pick an upgrade that they will also love.

Sent from my ERIS using xda premium
It has good roms but small selection. I don't recommend it if you want to play with several different roms. If you want to stick to 1 or 2, its a good phone.
Many of the developers have moved on to the nexus. I suspect that development will pick up some when Motorola releases ICS. We have an alpha version coming along.
While it's a very good phone, it didn't live up to it's hype. It was released with some problems that it shouldn't have had after being delayed for as long as it was.

The touchscreen was going bad in my Eris back in April. I guess it was losing it's sensitivity. I dealt with it for a few weeks but I was stuck in my contract until Nov. So I found a new digitizer online for $37 and a phone tear down and digitizer install video on youtube. For the tech savvy people like myself (I'm an engineer) it was the easiest and best way to get more life out of my Eris when I wasn't eligible for a phone upgrade and didn't want to pay full price for a new one.
Just another option for you.

I got the ReZound, also and I love it but not as much as my Eris which recently kicked the bucket I must return to fixing that Eris now!
Ta-ta for now my friends!
Got my Eris launch weekend in Nov 09. and had it rooted and running smooth which kept me from using my upgrade until I cracked my screen last month...so it was either a 99 asuriun deductible or a Rezound on sale for 99 online.. guess which choice I made?
On the downside, I still haven't figured it out how to prevent my Rezound from burning like a redhead in a bikini at the beach. On the upside, Verizon was very nice to me and gave me an upgrade a year early, so I ordered the GSIII. So long sunburnt redhead, hello tall, blond, companion with large parts made of plastic!
Everyone in the forums has been super awesome, and I love all you devs who've made my Rezound experience tolerable! I get to keep my Rezound, so I'll still be around to check in and see what comes down the pipe, and if I can finally get decent battery life (so I can either give it to my sister or sell it).

Sorry, I just wasn't sure if I recognized you or if you were just a lurker. Plenty of users have "wolf" in their usernames and it's kind of easy to lose track.
So uh... no hard feelings, I guess.
Hm, on-topic contributing discussion to this thread... how easy would you say it was to deal with Verizon on having a burning Rezound then? Verizon was voted amongst a top 5 worst customer service companies I saw a few weeks ago and thought they didn't really deserve a place there.

No hard feelings at all.
As for your question, actually, I've had nothing but pleasant customer service interactions with them. I've been through 4 or 5 replacement Rezounds, each time they were helpful and quickly sent me a new one. The last two times I asked for a different phone, but they would only exchange it for a Razr or something equally bad. This time I managed to convince them to let me upgrade early. My general rule with Verizon customer service is that if at first you dont succeed, try try try again. Often it just takes getting to the right supervisor who will approve it. I've gotten early upgrades several times (recurring GPS issues with my Droid 2 and X led to an early upgarde to my Rezound). This is my phone history:
Droid 1 => Droid 2 (they were supposed to replace the Droid 1, didnt have any in stock, so I got a Droid 2) => Droid X (recurring GPS problems on Droid 2 so they switch my warranty replacement to an X) => Droid X2 (regular upgrade) => Droid X (X2 was so bad I sold it [for $550]) => Rezound (Droid X had same recurring GPS issues as Droid 2, they gave me early upgrade) => GS3 (all sorts of issues, from overheating to loose screens to non functioning touchscreen [depending on the return])
Good luck OP! I'm sad to see a reasonable person leave the Rez crowd. I just bought one off a fella techie chick from out of state. Came with lotsa goodies too.
My VZ cust service has been good for the most part. It only took me 2 phone calls late last year to be given Unlimited Data with Unlim Hotspot packages on both my Thunderbolt phones at the time.
See ya around!

Indeed it is! It is both a line from the first book as well as the title of the fourth book.
I have recently ditched the Rezound also, I was getting tired of the shoddy build quality of it and the poor battery life, so I decided to get a used Galaxy Nexus off of ebay for about $200 since I was considering getting one before I get the Rezound anyway. It took me a little while to get used to it at first because a fair amount of things are a lot different (such as OCing and the screen calibration) but all in all its a good phone. I have pretty much everything settled with it (running Friday's CM10 nightly with Franco's kernel clocked at 1.8 GHz), but I do miss the beautiful screen on the Rezound yet I don't miss how it annihilated my battery. I may keep my Rezound for a little while just to see how the JB build come along but in the end I'm probably going to sell it to help pay for the Gnex.
Keep up the great work guys, I'll probably see you around these parts.
Wow. I can't believe it's been this long that I've had this phone. The DroidX2, MB870, or whatever you want to call it has been a huge part of my life for the past two years. As strange as that may sound, you all know that it is true. I was sitting at my desk today, staring at it plugged into my computer when nostalgia'd hard core to the first day I got this phone and did the same thing. I thought back to all the things I went through for this phone (and for you guys) and how much I've learned. It's been through hell and probably worse but all in good fun.
I know that I had never really been a "consistent" developer by any means. Dropping in and out of chats, disappearing for months on end, but one thing that never left my side was this phone. When I got it back then I knew that I wanted to hack it, play with it, develop for it, change it, mold it, whatever. And I think I did just that. Not as much as a wanted to, not as much as I think I could have done, but boy did I have fun doing it. I remember building CyanogenMod 7.0-RC1 on a really old Toshiba with a Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM just trying to figure out how to even begin to make a ROM for this phone. It was painful. I remember my first SBF attempt failed because I didn't have my battery charged (now I have two phones and 3 batteries).
The first real thing I did was trying to tear apart the SBFs from a few similar phones and looking through the CDT tables for any answer to unlocking the phone. We never did find that answer (well... maybe, but that's a different story) but I wasn't going to be discouraged. The first real development effort I put into the X2 was with navendrob porting over the pull down settings from the new (still Gingerbread) Atrix ROMs. I tore through smali code, XML files, copying and pasting chunks of code from all over. And then, it happened. I got the pull downs to show up and work. I was incredibly excited (and I showed it all over the IRC) of what I had accomplished. Although this wasn't the first real effort on the X2 as keep in mind that many of us were using Eclipse at the time, I was incredibly happy that it was the first real development for the X2.
SIDE NOTE: I'm incredibly proud of nitroglycerin33. He took his experience from themeing (theming?) the X2 and brought it out to be a widely used ROM on MANY different devices. So props to him for achieving more than I have.
I went on to try to work on getting real ROMs working on the X2. This was around the time we started getting 2nd-init working (the magic behind most of the Motorola ROMs at the time). I remember the first time I got it working. All I did was set one property (something like does.this.work=1) and seeing it show up. But besides randomly popping up in the forums, I started working on ClockworkMod Recovery (which I barely got working, but never fully functional). At this time I created my Twitter account and posted this picture. The date was November 16, 2011 (wow). But I knew that I had to get 2nd-init working better before I could fully get CWMR fully working and updated everyone with why it was so hard to get working.
So I set out to get CyanogenMod actually working from a complete build from scratch (not some hacked Atrix thing) and I posted my progress in the development forum. With the help of my guinea pig Moonshadow-NM doing my actual ROM tests, I watched as we slowly got to the boot animation, and to the home screen. You cannot believe how excited I was. There were so many flaws, that it was barely usable, but I was so happy (I think I scared my roommate from all the excitement). I slowly worked out the kinks, and it's still perhaps the most stable ROM that the X2 has (although I love Jellybean and won't go back to CM7 despite the issues I have).
And the rest is history. I remember holding "release events" for my ROMs. Teasing everyone with new updates, features, fixes, you name it. The IRC chat room would be packed with people waiting for me to post the link. And I was excited to see where we would go. And even if we didn't go very far, we still went on (mostly) as a team. Through ICS, and now JB, I tried to provide what Motorola refused to give.
So this is my thank you to all of you. Past, and (very few) present. You all have helped me through my craziness and issues with this phone and I can never thank you guys enough for it all. I never thought I would have "internet friends" but you guys sure as hell came close. This isn't the end of my adventures with Android. I will be getting a new phone (hopefully) in the coming weeks/months and I want to be a vital part of that development community also. I'm keeping my Java/C/C++ skill sharp still by writing a JNI app. I'm not going to release it as it's mainly just for experimental purposes, but it allows me to practice those languages while focusing on SQL database integration, cryptography, and JNI integration in Android.
So from one X2 guy to another: thank you for all you've done, all you do, and all you will do.
Peace,
dragonzkiller
Thank you so much for all your hard work for the x2. You truly made it greater than Motorola could have. The x2 has had a great community with some great people. I'm glad to see this post from you DK. It IS weird to think its been that long. As one of the users who was around back then, I have to say that it was fun seeing the DX2 move from Android version to Android version, even though this phone was stuck on Gingerbread in a lot of ways. Without you, this phone would probably still be stuck on 2.3.5. I have moved on from the DX2 and am in other sections of XDA now, but I will always think of the DX2 community to be the best, most helpful community there was/is. So not only thanks to DK, but thanks to all the DX2 users who made this forum enjoyable to be in. Its like your teenage years...you wish you could go back to that better time, but you know you just cant. At least we have the memories. Cheers.
Thanks DZK you really made a difference in my android hacking skills so to say. I remember contemplating on getting the Iphone 4s over the droid. Days after i got my X2 i found this site and tried CM7 for the first time. His roms inspired me to make my first port. This was the best fourm even though we didnt have stuff like and unlocked bootloader. The Razr M forum im at right now has NOTHING on this. Good luck on your adventure with a new phone! Bye!
dzk you've honestly brought me into my first realm of custom rommage. even though I've moved on since the dx2 I'm still excited by being able to look back on what you accomplished and was able to bring the dx2 to a whole new realm. being able to follow the progress of cm7, cm9, and now cm10 has been an exciting little journey that you and many of the other users (whether devs that were part of your "team" or the regular users like myself). all of you guys kick major ass and are awesome on your own rights. so a huge thank you to you dzk, and the og users who have made this bastard phone's forum awesome!
Its been a great experience with the roms you developed. The Dx2 was my first android phone and no matter how many phones I changed to or roms I load up, it will never compare to how I felt when waiting for a link to pop up with your new / updated peice of art.

The X2 was my first smartphone. I didn't know anything about anything at that time. One day heard about "root", did some research, stumbled across xda. One thing led to the next until I'm looking at a little dude with a skateboard on my screen, waiting for CM7 to boot. I still remember my excitement. Thank you for that DZK, best of luck to you.

You know I have move on also just recently as most, but I still have my X2. I am saving it for my son to show him with a good education and a little knowlege. He can accomplish almost anything, I never left CM7 needed the stability of what my phone offered for my sons memorys. I never tested the waters of developing. Just a few xml, png, changes to fit my desires.
You have a great deal to offer I hope it takes you far. I still check the X2 threads for new development just because I know you still play with it can't wait to see you hit the "Big Time" with your Talents. Good Luck and Thank You!!!!
It really has been over two years! My X2 had the search button wig out exactly 1yr and 3 days after I got it (3 days out of warranty) back in may 2012. Verizon nor Motorola would honor it for being out of warranty. I moved on then, but still checked back as this community is the first android community I joined.
I went through an HTC incredible and a LG Spectrum. Both were nothing compared to what you did with the X2.
After a little tinkering of my own, I got the X2 back up and running. (Took some soldering and precise hand movements to get the search button to work again. When a hardware key malfunctions, the phone will only boot into safe mode). I still use CM7 on my x2 (as an mp3 olater or a GPS unit) and it is on par with this Rezound in speed and responsiveness...
Sad to see you go, but happy you are moving on to bigger and newer projects. Best of luck on your new adventures.

Thanks Bryan, no thanks to aceoyame who totally abandoned the x2 while porting the X2 to MIUI...

Dragonzkiller, you made life fun with the X2. CM7 was awesome, as was Eclipse. Kudos for giving Nitro some props as he deserves it as well.
What you did, though, was awesome, Writing the image from scratch and making what was a damn stable ROM for the X2. I kept swapping back and forth between CM7 and Eclipse on the X2.
But, like you, times changed and I moved on. It was time for an upgrade and I needed a phone that had a better upgrade path, so it was with that I moved onto the Droid RAZR MAXX.
I'm still running that phone and probably will for some time since that was my last upgrade available to me. Currently, CM10.2 is being developed for it (4.3 kernel) and it's pretty stable.
Many thanks to you and to ALL the developers out there that put in so much of their time and effort into releasing things for us minions to run on our phones. I've learned a lot about how Android works, but with my full-time programming job, I've never had the time to actually learn it for myself. I still plan on doing so, but it just depends.
In any case, this is why I love the Android community. It's never a dull moment, and definitely, with the X2 and the entire bootloader unlocking fiasco that occurred that one night and caused Ash to go into a drunken tirade on Twitter, who can say the X2 was boring?
BTW, I say with a heavy heart that I no longer have my X2. Wish I did, but I traded it in at Best Buy. Got $75 out of it and used it towards getting my daughter her upgrade to a smartphone. Sadly, I couldn't convince her to go Droid. She went with the fruit, so I guess that's one failure for dear old Dad. Well, two because now my other daughter went to the fruit tree as well, even though I had her use my old OG Droid RAZR until her upgrade came up. I guess she got teased too much since all her friends had iP... oops, almost said the naughty word. You know what I mean! In any case, I do miss the X2. Might have to pick one up one day on eBay or something just to tinker with. Still have my crappy LG Vortex, which was my first Droid phone. I can't even give that one away!

I just want to say thanks to all the hard work the devs have done to make this phone the best it could be.
I have moved on to greener pastures with a Droid Ultra.

Sad this phone never got more. Thanks dragonz for your hard work when i still had this phone!
New users are still benefiting from your great work
Just wanted to say I am appreciate all the sharing of your work with others. I needed a G3 Verizon phone to work on PagePlus so I just purchased a Droid x2 3/3/2014. I rooted and flashed your CM10a3. I used this phone everyday and its a very useful phone now. I do have battery drain as some have experience but that is minor compared to the usefulness of this phone. Thanks!
