Which is better for the batterylife, 3G or Wifi?
At home and at work I'm connected to Wifi, but yesterday I noticed when I turned off Wifi and used 3G instead 3G seems to use less battery. However, this could also be because of several wakelocks I had when I was using Wifi.
I would understand Wifi is better for heavy internet use and 3G for push messages, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere on the forum, sorry if I missed it.

Hi there!
Wifi uses a lot less battery life, especially if you browse or do anything.
Having wifi ON always uses a certain amount of battery life, now, if you're receiving emails, downloading, browsing, it easily makes up for it. The reason for this is that Wifi is a "local" communication signal. It's for short distances, therefore your phone doesn't have to emit that strong of a signal, nor does it use up that much battery to receive. So Wifi is the way to go if you're just going to use it even a little bit.
3G uses more energy because of the radio spectrum itself and the distance and having to maintain it. It's true while having wifi you also maintain 3G, but you're not emitting constant data, it's just the "I'm still alive" packet to your operator.
Summary:
Use wifi if you're going to use your phone on the internet even a little bit. Turn it off when you don't have wifi near you, otherwise it'll be looking for a new wifi hotspot and that'll drain some battery.
Don't use wifi if you're not home.

New problem
The last 2/3 days my batterylife decreased. My phone was awake most of the time even though the screen was off and this hadn't happened before. After installing BetterBatteryStats (BBS) I could see the process wlan_rx_wake was on top (about 6,5 hours of the total 10 hours the phone was on).
My first thought was some app was responsible for this, however when I turned off Wifi and started using 3G again my batterylife seems to be normal again. Checking BBS the wlan_rx_wake seems to be renamed to deleted_wake_locks.
The last things that changed just before the problems started occurring was installing the Facebook and Twitter app, and updated to the latest ICS Vertumes theme (I was on 1.5 and now I'm on 1.6). So I uninstalled the Facebook and Twitter app but this didnt help at all. I already uninstalled Google Maps. The only thing I haven't tried yet is changing to the original theme, but it doesn't make sense this could be the solution.
Any ideas?
I had the same problem with the twitter app, it kept waking my device so i uninstalled it and use Ubersocial now.
I use Juicedefender (Ultimate version if you want to pay)
Juicedefender can turn off your wifi and 3g when your screen is off. It can be set to ping your data/wifi every few minutes if required to check emails tweets.
But Twitter nor Facebook is the problem. When uninstalled the problem still exists. Dont want to turn off wifi or 3G when the screen is off as then my mail or whatsapp wont sync.
Read something that it could be the type of router, but this isn't it as well. I've got the problem at home, work and at my parents house. All different routers.
Think I might just do a full-wipe and hope that solves it..
Before you do a full wipe try freezing Wifi Sharing and Wifi Sharing Manager with Titanium or Bloat Freezer Free to see if that makes a difference.
Sorry I recognize twitter was not an issue for you, it was the app that first alerted me to my issues about the wakelocks

Hmm... LocationManagerService is active over more than 4 hours. What could that be? GPS and the Google location stuff is already disabled..

wakelocks by apps that needs to sync can still be left even if u have deleted the actual apps that's requesting on-line data.residuals i would say.but try to check each and every apps that you have installed and see if they have sync or update requests and prolly modify them to manual.see also if ICS has a push notification request like "send errors to" or "check updates"

Maybe it's the kernel. Currently using Speedmod K2-18-test12. Lost 50% battery during the night. The phone wasnt awake but didnt enter deep sleep either.
Will try Speedmod K2-18-test16 next. If that doesnt solve it I'll try a whole different kernel.

Ok today I got massive battery drain, nearly empty after 8 hours.
The culprits are
Datacounterwidget (26% - used to keep track of amount of data I use each month)
WiFi sharing (18% - what is this? I dont think Ive used this before)
Openwatch (14% - bluetooth connection app to my bluetooth watch - didnt use it today)
Display (14%)
Android System (9%)
These numbers seem pretty strange to me, usually it will be screen about 45% android system about 30% and the rest split over the other things.
I have noticed wifi sharing pop up before and take a sizeable chunk out of the battery and I am thinking that may be the cause of the massive battery drain. Datacounter widget has never been up this high before and I think is just a by product of the wifi sharing.
Anyone know how I can prevent this from running? Or what it is?

WiFi sharing is that not letting others use your WiFi connection as a free access point .

Can't even see an option for it (well I see options for wifi hotspots but this and tethering are disabled)

My observation is that WiFi sharing and WiFi sharing manager will start in the background as soon as a WiFi connection has been established. They remain in the background even after you've turned off the WiFi and continue draining the battery. I've formed the habit of manually stopping both WiFi sharing and WiFi sharing manager every time I finished using the WiFi and they no longer appear in the battery-eater list. I've been wondering whether this could be automated and even better, when the WiFi-sharing battery drain will be fixed.
I have turned off the positioning by network option and now wifi sharing dosent appear on the list anymore. ... so i think it has something to do whit this

The Wifi on my SGSII is constantly scanning even though it is connected to my home wifi network (a WPA/WPA2 PSK secured connection on a G band router). The signal strength is "excellent" and I have the phone sitting right next to the router. Further, I have network notification turned off ( unchecked) and under advanced settings, my Wifi sleep Policy is set to "never".
Sprint users have reported exactly the same problem on the Epic Touch 4G" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272226 ). Has anyone else been experiencing the same issue on their ATT SGS2 ? I would be very grateful if someone could post a solution for this issue.

Scan rate is bumped up significantly when you're in the settings menu.
Have you confirmed via logcat that it's scanning frequently outside of the settings menu? It shouldn't be in that case - but without logcat it's almost impossible to tell.

What should I be looking for in logcat? I have Betterbattery stats installed and according to that, Wifi scan time is 8+ hours even though Wifi on time is only 2+ hours. That doesn't seem to make sense, but what do I know.

I believe BBS is reporting scan time improperly. I've seen that in a few threads.

You're probably right, except now scan time doesn't even show.
I have also observed this on my phone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy IIs, using a Sony Ericsson MW600 BT handsfree as well as a Pioneer car Bluetooth handsfree system.
I have not measured anything yet, but I notice that when the Wi-Fi scanning is going on, I get significant disturbances on both of my Bluetooth hands-free sets. Listening to music is without a hitch, but talking on the phone (Norwegian GSM - operator Telenor) is terrible.
i also noted this after installing the OTA update to 2.3.6 today. I just rooted mine yesterday after reading 54+ pages to make sure i understood everything. i had a cappy and loved installing new roms but have not taken the plunge yet on the sgs ii. I haven't noticed a huge difference in battery yet, but it has only been a couple of hours since the update.
What ROM are you running? You can edit the build.prop to change how often it looks for networks. It is the line "wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=xx". I set mine to 180 which is 3 minutes, some ROM's set it really low. Also the scan rate is bumped up significantly when you're in the settings menu like Entrophy said.

I had the same problem where my WIFI was fluctuating.... I dont know if this is the problem/ solution but this is what happened...
My SGS 2 is already rooted and unlocked. I had flashed the Entrophy DD 12/23 first then I had flashed Unnamed Custom ROM. After rebooting the phone, I saw the Wifi was not stable. So I again did a "Wipe Factory Data Reset" and "Wipe Cache Partition" and then installed the Unnamed Custom ROM from the SD Card. My Wifi is pretty stable now.
I am not sure if you guys had this issue when flashing a ROM but this seemed to fix it.

I have written about this wifi-battery drain a while back here in XDA.
When I used to have my Nokia symbian cell phone I used to flash custom roms
and there were a lot of nice new features after flashing.
A couple of the really nice battery saving mods were:
#1: added option to change the amount of wifi milliwatt output from 18 milliwatts (default) to 3 milliwatts
which is more than enough if the phone is no more than 20-25 feet from the wireless router.
(the mod gave the option of 3mw,6mw,12mw & 18mw)
Saves a lot of battery life.
Don't know why none of the DEVS have addressed this issue yet.
#2: added a mod so once the wifi establishes a connection it no longer scans
at all unless the connection is disconnected or lost.
So in other words, the phone only scans for wifi until it connects.
Right now I am connected to wifi with my phone and yet in settings it displays "scanning"
non-stop-constantly even though in wifi settings it displays "connected".
Why should the phone be scanning for wifi if it's already connected? (I have no idea).
Don't know why none of the DEVS have addressed this issue yet either.
Both of these mods really made a noticable difference in battery life
for for me since I do use the wifi feature in my phone a lot.
Hopefully one of the DEVS can look into these issues soon.
Now someone mentioned wifi constant scan, I noticed mine is doing the same thing. I leave the wifi setting screen on, it re-scans every 3 seconds!

Power control - Not likely, unless there is some documented power control already in the driver it's not going to happen. We're in a bad enough state as it is trying to make the chip not fire interrupts at 1 Hz on the Infuse.
Broadcom is one of the least open source friendly chipset manufacturers on the planet - their drivers have NO comments or documentation whatsoever, and datasheets are not available.
The rescan stuff is probably only addressable on Cyanogenmod, messing with it would require source code for the userland wifi management stuff.

As stated earlier in this thread - this is by design. It is assumed that if you're in the settings screen you want to change networks and have an up-to-date list.
I also am having this problem. I am running the rooted UKK6 from entropy512. After turning on my wifi, my battery drained from 90% to 70% in 5 hours with no use. My android OS is running at 80-90%. I don't have any extra apps except for 3g watchdog and CPUSpy and BBS. I do have Go launcher and GoSMS installed. As soon as I turn wifi off, i can see my battery level off under settings. I have searched for the last 2 days for a "fix". no luck.

Try doing a clean flash using "wipe data/factory reset" in CWM
recovery and then see if the phone has normal battery drainage.
(which it will if you flash the UnNamed v2.2.1 custom rom)
Then install one app at a time so you can find out exactly which
app is the culprit that causes your excessive battery drain.
This is the best way to trouble shoot battery drainage issues.
You will see that your battery drainage issue is not caused by
the custom rom, but it is caused by a few apps which are just
not very battery friendly.
The UnNamed v2.2.1 rom is the best custom rom currently
available for our i777 phones and it has outstanding battery life.

This has nothing to do with this thread - This thread is talking about wifi scanning.
Drain problems - read my known battery drainers thread. A lot of people are having problems, there is no fix, and there won't be until all the people complaining start actually collecting some data.
Recently I disabled the best wi-fi performance option (I enabled it on accident while messing around with settings on launch day) which obviously increased my battery life dramatically by actually allowing my phone to go into deep sleep. But now I hit a new issue.
Before I go on, I want to state that I DID apply the SmartSync fix and that my data IS working while my phone is in deep sleep.
New emails I receive with Gmail app do not get pushed to my phone as they should. They are anywhere from 5-15 minutes late if they even show up at all. If I happen to turn my screen on, automatically I get the notification of new emails.
Is anyone else having this issue with Gmail or any other app? I find it strange that while I have data (wi-fi/3g) enabled and working with the screen off, emails still come in delayed.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched around and most of the answers I came up with (regarding HTC devices like the One X) had to do with SmartSync messing up the connection or someone not having the notifications enabled. I'm at a loss 0.0
EDIT: I tested this with Google Talk had my main account up in Gmail and in another browser windows my other Gmail account. Added both of them, talked to my self, if my device screen was off, I would either get it 1-2 minutes late or not at all. Once I turned my screen back on, the notifications poured in. I also tried the same scenario with my main Gmail account logged off (in case it was canceling out the messages to my phone, which it wasn't) and I had the same outcome. I edited the title to reflect that this isn't a Gmail only issue.
EDIT 2: Did more tests, I tried turning Wi-Fi off completely and running the same tests as above to my surprise everything worked as expected. I initially thought it might be because of my 5Ghz Wi-Fi band, so I tried it all again on my 2.4Ghz channel -- had the same problems as before. Somehow the issue pertains to your screen being off and Wi-Fi being on.
EDIT 3: I just tried streaming Pandora and shutting the screen off (maybe WiFi WAS somehow shutting off) Pandora kept playing no problem. I messaged myself on Talk, got the notification right away. This is very bizarre 0.0 But it might confirm this only happens when the phone is in deep sleep mode... Still doesn't answer why it doesn't happen on 3G or why notifications sometimes still come through.
EDIT 4: Still no fix but I have discovered that for some reason if the screen is off ANY data doesn't go through. Let me explain better:
If I have some thing like Pandora running then it will continue to run once I shut my screen off. But if WiFi isn't being used and I turn my screen off and then lets say I try to connect to it with Cerberus or ping it from my PC or something it will not even though the router reports it as connected.

This is interesting...maybe the wifi performance toggle is associated to the smartsync, and all?.....I will say that with it unchecked I am getting some really really good battery life here compared to previous phones....but I also notice at times when emails are not pushed till I wake the screen during the day....Also the fact my wifi doesn't automatically reconnect to my house when I get back from work till I wake the screen...little things like that...
Havent messed with the best performance setting but will try it today now...

Have it, and it is unchecked. That's the weird thing, wi fi doesn't actually turn all the way off because SOMETIMES I do get the push notifications (late, however).

what is the smart sync fix?
When I installed this app, my cpu reduction and frame rate reduction was enabled. Does that mean this is standard with this phone. Does using this app to disable those setting improve the performance?
Issue continued overnight, tried various other things and nothing seems to fix it. I want to get my notifications but I don't want to destroy my battery life xD is anyone else having this issue?

It's definitely not a hardware problem because if that was the case the phone wouldn't work with wi fi almost at all. My wi-fi connection is rock solid even when the screen is off, just for some reason it won't notify I have the messages until the screen gets turned on.
I did some tests on my gf's stock phone and she's having the same issues, I told her to do some tests on her parents wi-fi when she goes there. I wonder if sgt slaughter has any news.
Btw if you definitely need them on time and need to be on wi fi but don't care about battery life that much just enable best wi fi performance.

Actually more like a Smart Sync break ... The built in settings/app put your data connections to sleep when your phone goes to deep sleep; this is done to save battery when phone not in use for extended period.
Some folks hate losing the data connections so a flashable "fix" is available for the "problem" ... Look around; you'll find it

its a sense problem, there's a thread in the one x forums on how to fix it. I'll post when I get home if I can find it. it shuts down to a 'power save' mode after a while plus after midnight or 11 or something.
Just wanted to update that I installed a custom rom that contains the WiFi fix mentioned and although my WiFi doesn't seem to drop how it did before (at least after one day) my notifications are anywhere between 4-10 minutes late on average through WiFi. This seems to be across the board for Exchange email, Gmail & Google Voice.

Yes my setup also had the wi-fi fix, I can even see my phone connected to the router when the screen is off, the connection is strong.
I had a suspicion it was probably the basic transfer rate of the browser and for some reason I could not adjust this on my fancy 100 dollar router with dd-wrt flashed onto it so I set up a repeater with my older router on stock settings. It seems like the notifications are coming through better now (albeit not instantly) but at least I don't have to turn my screen on every time. It might be a placebo effect or just luck (because at times it does work even with my other router).
EDIT: Ignore the italicized sentence. It was just a stroke of luck, the problem came back.

I am rooted and running Fresh Evo LTE 5.1.1 which has the "Disabled SmartSync deep sleep mode" already installed. I also leave my WiFi off (for the same reason as the OP outlines - messages are just plain not arriving or if they do it's after I turn the screen on).
I use gtalk as my primary form of communication on my phone and what seems to be happening is messages from my two closest friends are never arriving. It's hit or miss but seems to be ~45mins after my screen turns off that they send a message and I never get it. One is on Sprint on my family plan and the other is on Verizon. The weird thing is that if I look in my gmail > conversations the messages aren't there either.
I haven't been able to verify any SMS messages that I haven't received but I have noticed that my email notifications seemed a bit wonky but this issue may be fixed with changing my "push" hours (which is retarded to have factory set to only push email between 8am - 8pm).
Question for the smart kids in the class: When does the phone reach "deep sleep"? Is it around ~45mins after the screen turns off?

I also have the dual core mod which I BELIEVE sets my deep sleep right away which is probably why I have the problem more often than you do. One question just so we can start gathering facts large scale, if you're on 3G do you have the problem still? What if you turn 'best wi-fi performance'?

Correct - I have this problem on 3G. I run on only 3G because the problem is more prevalent on WiFi, but still very common on only 3G.
Currently I have "best wifi performance" turned off. Do you want me to test with it on or off?

On. When I turn it on it pretty much eliminates the issue, it acts just like 3G. But for me 3G is almost perfect (a couple seconds of delay but I can deal with that). Remember though that if you leave it ticked on it will destroy your battery life.
WiFi is on, best WiFi performance is on as well.. I'll run it this way a couple of days and see if I can replicate the problem.
I just wanted to say that I've been having similar issues. I have tried turning on best wifi performance, but I don't think that is helping. For one thing, when I have that turned on, when I wake the phone, the wifi is often times not connected, and it shows 3G. Then it will connect to wifi shortly after I wake the phone. On top of that, I'm still not getting notifications on time. I was notified of an email when I woke the phone that actually came in 10 minutes earlier. Hopefully HTC/Sprint is aware and working on a fix.
Still no fix but I have discovered that for some reason if the screen is off ANY data doesn't go through. Let me explain better:
If I have some thing like Pandora running then it will continue to run once I shut my screen off. But if WiFi isn't being used and I turn my screen off and then lets say I try to connect to it with Cerberus or ping it from my PC or something it will not even though the router reports it as connected.

Someone started a thread a while back on this, but I wanted to start my own hoping that this issue may get a little more attention, and keep a detailed thread for future use. I love this phone, but this is the one significant issue that I have.
I spend most of my day and evening on wifi since I have it available at work and home. I've noticed since day one that I wasn't getting my notifications on time specifically in Gtalk, and still exists to this day after the latest 2.13 OTA update. When I hear my phone get a notification, I will check it, and the notification has a timestamp in the notification drop down, so I know I got it just then, but then in gtalk the timestamp on my message is several minutes earlier. I have seen it as much as 45 minutes late. It is very noticeable whenever I turn on the screen that instantly I get a notification. The issue exists with all push notifications. Gmail notifications will arrive late as well as exchange notifications. I've seen reports about it happening with WhatsApp messenger. It has been theorized on other forums that the wifi radio goes too deep into sleep for the notification to wake the phone up.
My wifi policy is set to stay on always. I've tried factory resetting. I know that the wifi stays connected while it is sleeping and is not disconnecting. I've tried multiple wireless networks. I've tried 2.4ghz vs 5ghz. It has nothing to do with smart sync disabling data as this is happening during the day and not between the hours of 12am and 7am.
I have done a lot of searching on Google about this issue, and I've determined that it is an issue with the entire line of HTC One series phones. People have reported this issue on the One X (International and ATT), the One S, Incredible 4g, and of course many other reports on the Evo LTE.

Please feel free to test this yourself. Connect to wifi, turn your screen off, send yourself a gtalk message from a separate account. If it comes in on time, wait about a minute and try again. If it doesn't come in, wait as long as you can stand or just turn the screen on, and see your notification come in. I tested this on a friend's Evo LTE who insisted he wasn't having the issue, and I was able to duplicate this. It seems that most people must not use wifi as much as I do, and maybe just haven't noticed.
Current solutions / workarounds:
Turn on Best Wifi Performance in the advanced wifi settings - kills battery
The best solution that someone found on another forum was to use an app called REGPON Wifi KeepAlive. It is an app that puts a partial wakelock on the phone in order to keep it from going into deep sleep. Check both boxes included in the app. The first starts the process, and the second will turn it off when wifi is disconnected. This doesn't have a huge effect on battery as I thought it would since it is putting a wakelock on the phone. I actually get very good battery life still, and can last through the day with heavy usage. It's nowhere near the significant drain that you get with the Best Wifi Performance option.

That could be considered a workaround, and I have tried it, but wifi doesn't go to sleep until after several minutes after you turn the screen off when you use that setting. Then of course mobile data kicks in and notifications come in on time.
Ok so here is my situation.. when I am at home on wifi.. (the only place i consistently use wifi..) and my phone is in standby the process com.google.android.gsf.login is keeping my phone awake a lot... I am not complaining about battery life on this phone as a whole as it's really good.. but oddly enough for me, I get worse battery life (when it comes to standby) when on wifi... For example just yesterday I got like 19 hours and 2 hrs 15mins screen on time and about an hour of music streaming (screen off) all on 4g.. and when i looked at my battery stats the awake time and screen on times were essentially identical (other than the music streaming) but today I have been testing some at home with wifi on and off.. I have attached a picture of my battery graph.. when on wifi I have lots of wake locks that don't correspond with actual usage.. but when on mobile data those wake locks are gone..
I understand that it's an app that is doing the draining my only question is why is doing it on wifi only..
In the attached screenshot no settings were changed except for toggling wifi.. to see the difference..
My next idea is to try and get on wifi somewhere else and see if I have some weird anomaly with my wireless network at home...
anyone care to chime in?
Just an update the last 45 mins on 4g.. little wake time not associated with screen on... This has me perplexed..
Well.. I can't get the screenshot to attach but... Les than 2 mins of wake time in 40 mins on 4g at home on wifi I had like 7 mins in 25 mins on wifi..

I know that the kernel for our processor has a patch to fix wakelock problems that are draining the battery, but the manufacturers have not pushed an update. Elkay is currently working on a kernel to resolve this problem, check the Original Development subforum. Battery life is significantly improved. I'm currently using DSB'S overclock kernel which has been troublesome for most people, but the battery life has been great and I'm fortunate to have almost no problems with it.
I am on elkay's kernel... Those screenshotss were while using his kernel.. according to him moat of those issues addressed are specific to mobile data standby time.. and my mobile data standby time is actually really good..
The issues only happen when I am on wifi.., and the only WiFi I have tested is my home network..

I get the same issue as you. I actually just mentioned it in elkay's thread. I've been getting wakelocks like that on every kernel so I don't think it's just strictly his kernel that's causing problemos.
Possible Solutions ...
1) Your home wifi has some ports blocked or proxy in effect which is causing some Google Service to be unreachable when on wifi and hence causing the wakelock
2) One of the Google Account Services is set to update over wifi only and again its unreachable over your wifi, hence the wakelock
3) Disable Gtalk/G+ if you dont use them and reboot
4) Try a different wifi network, if you dont have the wakelock, then its your home wifi router config causing issues

I am wondering if it's solution #1.. i don't have another wifi network to test on though.. i guess i could go hang out at starbucks or somewhere like that.. and see.. although with LTE (and unl. data) my I don't really "need" to be on wifi at home other than a couple apps that let me control stuff at home when on the same network.. (DirecTV, Onkyo, Shares Finder..)
I debloated the ROM I am on and Gtalk and G+ were removed since i don't use them..
I don't think I have any Google account services set to update over wifi only I have gone through the settings a couple times looking for stuff like that... that is why I am thinking it possibly has something to do with my network.. I will keep researching and if I find some solution I will update for the communities sake..
Very similar issue here, although it seems random. Just the hour day I had 13 hours on with 8 hours kept awake and 1 hour screen time.
