As soon as I've started Google Maps once it keeps running even after I close Google Maps. As a result the LocationManagerService is often chewing up my battery in the background. Only solution is to reboot the phone or force quit with Titanium Backup. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?
I'm running:
Google Maps 6.0.1
Phenomenal 1.1 kernel
UltraToxic 8.0.1 Rom
I noticed the same after using Navigation soon after updating to KK5. Freezing the NetworkLocation apk (com.google.android.location) resolved it for me, while leaving GPS working correctly.

I froze Network Location 1.1.08 with Titanium Backup Pro. However Google Maps still keeps running in the background after closing it. Did I freeze it incorrectly?

Are you logged into Latitude? That manifests itself as Google Maps activity and is a real battery killer.
Might be worth checking - log out and stay out if it is active.

I assume you probably have checked, but if not, just double check that you definitely aren't logged in. Can't remember now the sequence of events, but in answering a relatively innocent question shortly after getting the phone I inadvertently found myself to be a Latitude user! I had never knowingly opened it or logged in.
Soon as I killed it my battery life improved immeasurably.

Thanks for the tip! I downgraded to 5.8 but it's still not fixed.
OK, if it isn't Latitude, the next most likely culprit would be an app or a widget that is somehow using mapping. A weather widget? Shopping? Anything else that thinks it needs to know where you are right now?
If you have the stomach for it, I have read various threads that talk about removing one widget at a time (and then one app at a time) until the culprit is identified.
Equally you could install a clean ROM and then start installing apps and widgets until you get the issue back.
No precise science, just lots of trial and error...

Thanks! I don't have any widgets running. I've also tried the Simple & Clean v2.4.3 ROM (and various kernels) and it produced the same result. It's just that as soon as I start anything related to google maps it will just keep google maps running until I kill it or reboot.
I wonder if it is a common bug and only few people notice it or if it's a rare bug. Sure eats up that battery though!
I read they'll be releasing ICS beta next week so I'm going to hope that fixes this issue.
So can you boot the clean ROM, start Google Maps and Google Maps alone, close it down and have it close cleanly? That is to say, no battery drain?
I must admit I fight a little shy of Maps since my Latitude experience but I have used it and I'm not aware of the behaviour you are seeing.
If you run the clean ROM for a while without anything else running I assume all is well?

As soon as I start Google Maps it will run indefinitely in the background. But as long as I don't run anything Google Maps related then there's no problem (it doesn't autostart or anything).

It's the 'Google Maps related' bit that I'm interested in. What are you counting as Google Maps related?
If you only open Google Maps what happens? Same thing?
What (if any) other apps are causing this to happen? Can you list everything that triggers this behaviour.

Exactly. If I never start any of these there's zero issues.
Hmmmn, that is odd then.
I'm not aware of issues with Maps but I'll have a play with it on my own phone and see if I can replicate.
I had this on KK5.
On KJ3 and previous ones, there are no problems.

First of all, I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP BILLIONS OF TIMES, SO BEFORE YOU REPLY WITH "Search the forums" READ THIS.
I have been looking for WEEKS trying to find an answer to this, and no answer given on any forums are what I am looking for.
I have an android phone (sidekick 4g) and there are apps that run in the background when not necessary. Now I know some stuff need to be aways running for the phone to function. But I also know that apps like Facebook, Market, Gmail, T-mobile's Media Store, MyYearBook, Maps, Aptoide, etc don't. When I force close them, they just start up a few seconds later. I've tried task killers and got the same result. I've read the "Why you shouldn't use a task killer" articles but everyone keeps saying different things about it so I'm confused.
Like many others, I want my battery to last at least half way through the day. The above mentioned apps (and some others) DRAIN THE BATTERY WHEN RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN I DON'T WANT THEM TO.
Please does anyone know of a way to fix this?
My phone is rooted, if that matters.
Also, "freezing" the apps don't help cause then I can't use them when I actually want to.
Thank you very much in advance anyone who can help me out!

Applications running, doesn't mean cpu cycles are being used. Sitting in memory is no different then a song sitting on your sdcard. Your issue with the battery has to do with processes using cpu cycles. If you have applications that update, force updates manually.
Just having apps in memory isn't your issue.
Use the features built into the os, find out what apps are causing the problem. Look at the settings. If you have looked at your settings, then you have one of three choices. Open bugreports with the application developers, don't install the apps causing problems, or upgrade your phone.

Thank you that makes sense.
I would think those apps would use battery because it pushes notifications for the app (like new messages and stuff). Does that not use battery?

It does use battery because to process the notification it needs to use the cpu. If you force applications to update manually. Your batter would be better. Check into battery saving tuts. All that information has already been discussed plenty. Won't change in this scenario either.
The more apps you have updating information the more data and notifications are being processed.

Also, I have another problem, if you know anything about this kinda stuff. The Facebook app icon just (like 10 minutes ago) disappeared from my home screen, and it's not in the app drawer either. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still having the problem. I can only open it by manually searching "facebook" in the google search widget and that's when it gives me the option to open the app. It's really bizzare and I have no idea what's going on.

Sounds like a issue with the rom or launcher. Try installing another launcher from the market and see if the application is installed. If its there with another launcher then its your stock launcher, if its not then its the rom.

I already did my research on this and found that people on older devices had this issue. I had this issue on my DNA today and it was eating up close to 30 percent of my battery. So much so that I was at 70 percent after 3-4 hours off the charger. I disabled everything I could related to location and it was still running. Eventually I cleared cache and reset the settings, still nothing. Uninstalled the most recent update and went back to "factory" and all is good.
Just posting this up for anyone else who has been experiencing the same thing.

Yeah, google maps does stay on pretty much all the time. However, according to Gsam, it only eats up about 2% of battery for me. Not sure why yours is chowing down that much battery. Do you use lattitude, I know that is a real battery drainer.

That would be interesting to know. You can also use better battery stats (there's a free version posted somewhere on XDA) to help find the offending app causing the drain.

Is there a way to convert the Maps app to downloadable and then uninstall it and then install it directly from the market to see if that fixes any issues? I heard that might be beneficial, too. I'm not sure though. >_<

I was having this issue a while back and was finally able to resolve it after turning off most of the location services in the Maps settings. I read somewhere that there is a bug on some HTC devices where Latitute is constantly pinging for location services (but in a way that causes tons of battery drain). My battery wasn't making it until dinner time and now it goes about 24 hours.

I actually did have traffic enabled, I forgot to turn it off when I enabled google now. But this started happening after I had turned off traffic. So far so good, reinstalled the update and it hasn't been running more than 2% today. So what location services do you guys use? Verizon, Google or standalone, I have googles selected and it's only thing related to location that's enabled though so I can get weather.
Try getting a gps lock in maps before you close it. Seems to help me.
I have found that I have less issues with google maps, latitude, and google now, if my GPS has been allowed to turn on and get a GOOD lock. I like to run GPS status to initialize the GPS, and have it create a good GPS database. Seems like once the GPS has had a good lock (after flashing a new rom) then maps etc runs smoother, less wake-locks, and less battery usage.
Yeah If I go into maps, I let it get a lock before exiting, been having good luck so far.

Open maps, let it grab your location and show it on the map then leave it. That way its not searching for your location like it would be if you opened it and closed it before the map showed up.

I only leave Google location services on, never use Verizons, and only use stand alone for navigation, etc.
Ok, ever since the new maps update, it constantly turns itself on. It never use to be a problem before. I've been monitoring with GSam. I don't have anything turned on. I don't use google now, latitude or any other thing. When in settings the only thing that is checked is automatic sign in...you cant remove that check. It saves it but when you open back up is checked again. The following services running:
com.google.android.apps.maps:FriendService
com.google.android.apps.maps
com.google.android.apps.maps:GoogleLocationService
com.google.android.apps.maps:LocationFriendService
Anyone experiencing this issue since the updated to the maps in market? I'm going to test it with Location & Google Search off, but you need to turn that on to get a lock on GPS for maps. Annoying to say the least. I'm running stock.

Yeah it looks like many apps do that...those stupid developers...
Anyways, it looks like ure a minimal-ram-usage kinda guy - i respect that and your quest, i fear it wont last long cuz everytime u get a new app it probably does the same thing...but i'll help you how i can.
So dis is what I do:
(You need root, except for task killer)
Autostarts app: it allows you to disable autostarting bast***rd apps
Advanced task killer: it allows you to kill processes and services. Userful sometimes when u need to make sure.... i advice against letting it run on it's own letting it clean every half hour or so, cause it hogs up your phone at times, dunno why, but manual is always the best way.
Grennify:this is a real revolution for android, some rom developers have even put it as system app preinstalled in their roms. Read the apps description on the store. It will hibernate apps automatically, it runs in the background but it's more useful than harmful. It 'hibernates' apps instead of freezing them totally (like u can do with titanium backup pro and many other apps). It helps fight other backgrounf running user-hater apps such as facebook...you can apply it to gmaps, it will disable it automatically when u close the app.

Hello guys
I have an old pronlem -- all the gapps I have tried(slim, pico, delta) are eating too much at all the roms ive used(purity, sultan, orion os, aosparadox, exodus)
Even amplify does not help.
What can you reccomend?
To be precise, its Google Play Services that's eating away at your battery, the recent updates have increased this threshold even more so, I'm pretty blank on how to tackle this, maybe someone else can help.

Well, I have tried almost everything and I can't blame anyone except google for this. Peculiar thing about this is that it happens on mobile data, almost never on wifi. Mobile Radio is active half of the times. You will see google play services, gmail, google app and other google apps in battery stat.
What I have tried so far: amplify, greenify, all possible location combo, blocking alarms, wakelocks, wiping google play services, google accounts, blocking permission to google apps. Most of these things broke functionality .
Solution: Just ignore. There are various threads on google forums, xda and not even a single working solution. If someone finds it, I am keen to try that (unless it asks for my credit card).

Well the thing is, Google Play Services (GPS from here on out), handles literally everything that Google Apps do on your device, from Geo-Positioning (Maps) to Sync (SyncAdapter) to Emails (Gmail/Exchange) to everything. To put in view, apps that crash on our devices, give a pop up, saying "XYZ apps has stopped working" and gives us 2 options "OK" & "Report", now if you "Report" the error, you'd think the report (and device logs!) go to the developer of the app, Yes ? NO! These are sent to the Almighty Overlords at Google, aside from the data-mining issue here, this just astonished me beyond belief. So that being said, what my personal view is, Google is, like every new Android Iteration, upgrading the old apps to use the Android N-ish architecture & stuff, and maybe, just maybe that this new stuff that's being implemented is better off in Android N, and not in LP or MM. But then again, I might be horribly wrong about all of this

Though you are right about first half (can't say much about later part, as I don't understand why it should make google services go crazy )
This problem traces back to Kitkat and probably jell bean but only thing which I do not understand is why only in mobile data ?? I don't see any of them popping up in wifi .
Just when I thought I could ignore it, it started non stop feast on mobile data. I had to stop background data for this. Damn you google.
try A-gapps, it allows battery optimization for google play services (open-gapps etc don't allow this)
it helped me to have less battery drain by google play services

Two apps I regularly Greenify on a half dozen different devices running rooted ROMs representing Android 5.1-7.1. No issues to date. Obviously there is a common thread that most Greenify users don't encounter.
Same issue on randomly changing apps any solutions?
I have a mate 10. Periodically since purchase random apps will crash as soon as they are opened rendering them unusable. So far it's happened to google maps, messages, dialler, drupe, calendar and currently google wifi. I'm using an unmodified, standard rom. I've updated, cleared cache, uninstalled apps, soft reset and factory reset with no resolution. As randomly as they start to crash, they stop, could be a day or a month. I see others complaining of similar issues. Has anyone come across a cause or a fix?

I've updated, cleared cache, uninstalled apps, soft reset and factory reset with no resolution. As randomly as they start to crash, they stop, could be a day or a month. I see others complaining of similar issues. Has anyone come across a cause or a fix?
