Hey everybody recently obtained a Samsung Vibrant, looking for the best rom with UV/OC capabilities and some mods, perhaps.
I flashed two I897's (rogers branded) with quite good results untill i had to make the download mode device due to a AT&T / Rogers compatability issue concerning a stock rom and then custom rom with a not-so-working kernel
So I'm asking for some assistence in the rom/kernel department here and what works best... I love big flashy roms but would take something bland if the battery life and speed was enhanced greatly speed over battery though and 3D wouldn't hurt either.
Cheers, Red Hazy
Most GB roms including CM7 and MIUI have terrible battery life but excellent performance. If your looking for superior battery life flash Bionix 1.3.1 with overstock 2.4.1 kernal. Otherwise try as many different roms as possible to see which one is best for your needs.

The GB/CM7 based ROMs can be fast, but the battery life is horrid. I'd recommend any of the 2.2.1 ROMs myself, either my new one (plug), or for something more proven, Bi-Winning V3. Combine that with Bali-X and you can overclock or undervolt to your heart and battery's content. If you (and your phone) can handle more than a 1.2ghz overclock, there are other kernels that can do that as well.
I'm running R-9 V5 rom and android 2.3.4 stock kernel and 1.77.30 radio. I was getting random reboots on the 1.97.00R radio with the stock kernel, kholk, and faux123. I'm just wondering what is the perfect combo to eliminate random reboots? It's extremely annoying when every time I pull my phone out to use, it's restarting. What I would prefer is Kholk kernel with the 1.21Ghz overclock and R-9 V5 rom, as well as the 1.97.00R radio and no random reboots. Why does this occur? 1.97.00R was supposed to fix random reboots... With the none ext 4 kernels I get fully working wifi on all faux123 and kholk, however ext kernels lose wifi in an error. However the none ext 4 kernels have random reboots with perfect working wifi. So I'm looking for a rom/ kernel/ radio with an overclock preferably kholk and a rom/ kernel that allows for working wifi and no random reboots. I get random reboots even while the phone in underclocked. I usually run the max at 608Mhz. Your guy's help would be highly appreciated!!
Thanks Buds!
When it comes to modifying my phone, I am very reserve and I usually like things to develop until they are fully functional and integrated, i.e. roms, kernels, etc.
So before I move on to making major changes I like to find a stable setup that works well for me.
Currently I am running CM7, prebeta #3 with faux's kernel at 1.1Ghz
My honest opinion is that faux's kernels are really sweet and even at a 1.1Ghz OC it is awesome. There is a 1.3Ghz out right now by the way but with a 1.1Ghz OC my quadrant scores while running CM7 are averaging out at around 3600-3800.
If you, dont want this you should try the recently popular HomeBase ROMS which are stock 2.3.4. with blur (i think stock looks nice) and an integrated 1.3Ghz OC. That should run pretty smooth.
It really depends on what you like. CM7 runs nice if you don't care about/use the camera.
Alien #4 (with or without theme) is really fast and looks pretty good with the theme applied (deblurs a lot)
The Darkside 1.3 looks pretty with its red/black theme and has a pretty good boot animation. It is also pretty quick and deblured.
Haven't used Aura but it's supposed to be a really fast semi-stock ROM.
CherryPi is also supposed to be fast but I don't like the theme.
Starwars ROM is really nice if you are a big star wars fan.
Faux123's kernels are the most stable that I've seen, even the new 1.3GHz kernel. Kholk's suffer from random reboots when wifi is enabled (only with some people, me and you for example).
Also, with your phone underclocked to 608, you are missing out on just how quick this phone can be. If you undervolt, then leaving the phone at 1GHz kind of balances out the battery drain.
Cm7 is awesome, but the battery life is so-so. Fauxs 1.3 kernel is fast but battery is even worse.
Stock is my favorite with faux 1.1 kernel undervolted. I wish there was a 1.0 kernel that supported uv.
Alien is never updated and suffers from too many force close and reboots for me.
I'm not too big on the themes from some of the other roms, and since they are all repackaged stock roms with the same tweaks and either faux or stock kernel your often better off with stock and the theme of your choice imo.

I'm running HomeBase with the faux 1.3ghz kernel. It rocks.
later
I run everything stock and it works great. Next question?
Im running Alien #4 with the theme, Faux 1.3 kernel undervolted, i get the less random reboots with this mix.
I disabled the apps i dont use much from the autostart using (Optimize Tool Box from android market), so it boots a lot faster if it ever random reboots.
My vote goes to Aura
From a post I just did on the Develop Aura thread:
Diviance: Thanks very much for a great ROM (#8 Blur). My phone, for the first time, performs like I want it to. My bluetooth sync with my Ford truck was never complete before. I noticed this am it was even uploading the text messages to the truck! And I can have both the phone and the Slacker work via bluetooth (after gb had to be one or the other). After GB I also had some issues with one person on text messaging where I didn't get the phone number so I couldn't respond. That went away also. In both cases reloading 2.3.4 did nothing to fix it only the Aura ROM.
(I am on the #8 Blur which comes bundled with Faux's kernel I believe)

So have you noticed anything else cool about optimize tool box? sounds pretty cool.
I have never experienced random reboots.
I am currently on CM7 / Fauxx123 kernel
For a stable build and performance, flash Alien #4 / Fauxx123 Kernel 1.3Mhz

it also notifies me when an installed app can be moved to the sd card, i think this should be considered a must have. and its free

Hello everybody, I'm opening the thread just to read opinions from you all about the kernels that are currently available.
The one I've been using is void #echo, which in my humble opinion with the combination of a tweaked deadline scheduler and a lionheart governor provides great performance, battery life and minimum lag whatsoever.
I do understand that it depends on needs which shall be used, however, I would like to know which one to you guys works smoother and provides better performance / battery life.
I always aim for performance over battery life (I didn't buy a SGSII to get poor performance )
In terms of battery life, I can get it up to 22~23 hours on battery, using WCDMA only / HSPA+ during day and enabling airplane mode during night.
Fast Dormancy disabled and deep sleep working correctly (XXKL1).
I don't like the complexity of siyah and to be good on batt you have to tweak it more with UV and thing like that ,wish is not my style to make trying/errors on my brand new 600$phone !
I tried speed mod wish is very great actually with great overall perform
void echo is the one Im trying right now ! since 2 days its feel very strong and good on battery with good performance on games without getting the phone very hot
neak is good but its more a copy/past of the overall coders over wish is good in one sense but its a bit laggy in game with lucrative mod but defenatly one of my favorite kernel out there ! Im waiting for 1.3 to let simone correct some bugs
Siyah is the tweakers' heaven. You can fine tune every last bit of your phone.
I personally love void, it feels very fast and has good battery life.
I tried NEAK for a short time and it seemed fine but quite many report lag in games(using on demand governor seems to fix it though).
Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm waiting for N.E.A.K 1.3x too

as one of the posts above said siyah is the tweakers heaven..haha trust me i never used it before as i thought it was to complicated. but once you have done your reading and read other peoples posts and what they do to get the best out of the kernel you have a winner...all the rest look good i am not saying anything bad but for me from now on any rom i use siyah is coming with me due to the fact it has so many options to it and so much i can play around with i am in heaven
hope that helps...oh and on a side note i have been tempted to upgrade to a different rom but the current base i am using and with the kernel i have and the settings that i am using the only time i will actually jump ship is if one there is a stable cm9 out there by the amazing team hacksung. Two if Gokhanmoral does a siyah kernel for cm9 which i think will be when kernel sources are made available and three cause i have already my voodoo app all configured with my poweramp player to get the best sound possible i would be foolish to make the step at this moment of time...
So my advice for battery speedmod if you are not into tweaking alot with voltages and clock frequencies and if you want the best of both worlds then siyah
siyah 2.6.4.

Great feedback bro, I tried Siyah in the past but honestly when I used it I didn't know there were parameters to tweak (didn't check the REF documentation LOL).
Do you get smoother behavior / better performance / higher benchmark scores tweaking the parameters? In quadrant I get around 4604 with void.echo.
as my "personal" opinion...
since i instaled V3RTR3MA.V.4.0 rom, i've been using void#echo
couldn't ask for more its fast and stable... nothing too complicated and i could get 8186 in the quadrant benchmark... a really great kernel...
void echo.By far best kernel for common user, who doesn't want to do all kind of tweaks&stuff.By default is great. If you are into a litle tweaking, you can OC and UV without any issues.
I used it since it was released. No issues at all, battery friendly, great performance.
Trully a KISS principle follower.
My personal advice to all, avoid all roms&kernels that are heavily customized and have alot of useless "tweakes" and scripts on them. The more things on it, more chances of breaking up.
Look for simple builds,as close as it can be to stock, eye candy is not performance.
Jkay makes great themes wich you can apply to the rom.

100% agree most of the battery better and greater speed for these kernels is actually unproven and just advertising bumf .
I have used the kernels listed in the topic and in each case stock kernel has benchmarked better using multiple tests .

I agree with your opinion, and that's the reason why I use only Sammy Stock ROMs
I've flashed a number of roms and kernels in the past few months since May, best combination for me is usually a near stock rom, plus a stable kernel like Speedmod, they just work without needing any tweaking apart from custom set up that's it.
I don't generally like the number of tweaks in some roms but each to their own.
I find stock fine and fluid and stable enough without much problems.
Yeah..i get 6500+ without rawr and oc to 1600.you forget one thing,ALL other kernels have tweaked I/O scheduler enabled. Knzo says very clear in his thread.it's a way to cheat, that's why this tweak is not default on his kernel.
About rom, look for odexed.tornado2 by brotuck is one of the best around(odexed, pretty much stock, only useless apps removed from it).combined with jkay theme and coid echo...my s2 flies

Thanks for the suggestion dude! I'll take a look to it! Beside the removal of stock apps, what tweaks are included to achieve that score?
Best kernel so far for me is hardcore's speedmod.
Fast, first time I broke the 6000 barrier on Antutu benchmark without overclock. And great battery life, one full day + charging only by the end of day two, with normal use.
Normal use for me is making phone calls, surfing web and playing games sometimes, not more than 20min per "session". Turning wifi and 3g off when phone on standby. And switching to airplane mode overnight.
And yes I tried other kernels....

None.i dont flash a rom for benchmark scores.i flash it for how it works.those benchmarks cand be tricked, but whats the point?what do you preffer?a rom&kernel with high results on tests, but moves like crap, laggy,fc's with high battery drain or a phone that is snappy, smooth, fast, great battery life and works properly?

I have been using void echo kernel these past few days. But I switched to Speedmode because of an issue. My phone gets very hot once I backup my nand on CWM. Also sometimes when I play games. Do you guys have this issue too?

Hello! i am in the process of overclocking my thunderbolt in order to get better performance with the eternity rom, and i was wondering what you guys oc your phones to? and if you do, what program/setting do you use to do so? (i plan to use a script in init after have found suitable settings)
I, personally, find it pointless to OC the Thunderbolt. The phone is fast and smooth enough for me on the stock speed, plus the battery life is bad enough without adding more strain to it.
However, if you insist on OC'ing, 1.2GHz is a safe bet. Some people can get to 1.4GHz, but then you run into freezing and random reboots. Also remember that individual phones handle overclocking differently. Where one phone can run perfect at 1.4GHz, another might freeze instantly when going that high.
Good OC'ing programs include SetCPU, No Frills CPU, and ROM Toolbox.
I don't overclock. That being said i have OC'd my phone b4 i have had it up to 1.8 Ghz stable, but it doesnt seem to make anything run faster. I use the Thundershed version of CM7 and its super fast. I dont think it could get much faster. and without overclocking i get better battery life.
thanks for the info actually ended up going with the lean kernel which is oc'd on the kernel level, works fairly well

Hi there
i have my galaxy for a few wekks now and i find battery on CM9 RC2 pretty bad (underclocked and undervolted)
which rom is recommended for good battery life (and works with siyah kernel)
GPS/WIFI/MOBILE DATA/CAMERA must be working !!
thanks for your suggestions
I was using xwlpo stock, only rooted. Undervolted -25 and set cpu to 800 mhz. The governor was ondemand. The formula of amazing battery life. Now i use jelly bean which wastes battery.

No two people will ever have the exact same setup, and even if they miraculously did, the likelihood of their two phones coming out of the factory exactly the same is infinitesimal.
So a ROM that someone else experiences good battery life with, may be terrible for you or me.

Try rootbox with dm kernel. It has pretty good battery, but like previously said every user is different and therefore will have different battery life. It would not surpise me if this gets closed very quickly.
