I trying to find the best kernel for battery life. Faux keeps giving me problem loading widget errors after reboot and screws up webtop. All others have some other problems too

Well faux has 2.3.4 and cm7 and froyo kernels but no 2.3.5. 2.3.4 kernels wont work properly on 2.3.5 but..actually....I thought when I had 2.3.5 that I did flash fauxs and it did work if I'm not mistaken. But I remember some things didnt work as well.

I'm not sure if you can install it with the stock recovery because I use the ClockworkMod. You should just get Rom Manager from the market and flash it. It's simple. For Ext2 you can use it on a stock kernel fine with OCLF in the market. For Voodoo (Ext4) you need to flash a kernel that comes with it on a Rom that supports it. Like Bionix.

Whoops. Learn something new everyday. It didn't work for me on stock JI6 though, so I figured you needed a compatible ROM.

Eh, Weird.. Worked for me

flashing anything removes baseband and signal

the other day i DL and flashed CM7 trigger redux. i love everything about it except the stock kernal. when i first flashed the rom everything i flashed after that would take away my baseband and my signal completely, rendering my phone useless unless i connected to a wifi. i then managed to get a kb5 modem for cm7.1, which worked just fine. however i still cannot get a kernal on my phone. i took the cm7 kernals for 2.3.4, including platypus and the nightlys [they are all located in the bible]
im guessing since the 7.1 modem flashed just fine, i need to find a kernal for cm7.1?
are there any in circulation atm? or would the cm website be the best place for these kernals?
i apologize for the noob questions, but i am new to 2.3

Ok, so odin'd back to stock, reflashed, even tried a diff cm7 version. Still no success...wtf?

what kernel are you flashing?
look for an updated version of the kernel.
If there is not one, don't flash the kernel.

I'm on version 2.3.4 I figured I could flash a kernel updated to that version via the bible. Or is cm7.1 something completely different?

Yeah my imei number is there. This is crazy, I've never had any problems flashing anything before. Its like my phone won't let me flash any other kernel, but the one that comes with cm7. I can flash cm7.1 modems just fine though

How the hell did you know that kernal was going to work? What makes this kernal different then the others I tried?

There are 3 kernels right now for the vibrant updated enough to work with the latest nightlies. But only glitch and kernel de jour have been updated, and personally glitch seems to be better (plus, I'm running glitch v11 right now and have been following that thread).
I'm pretty sure all the CM7 kernel links in the bible are too old and therefore, you lose your baseband.

Have you tried a fruitcake recovery? Those are about as stock as you can get.

[Q] ICS latest recovery

what exactly is it i.e. the one you should be using to flash ICS builds? I've tried reading the 400+ page threads and searched....
in ROM manager it says latest is 5.0.2.0 (which I have), have read that CWM touch has issues (??)
Or should I be using this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
I assume just DL the zip file and flash as normal ZIP in existing CWM? or via ROM manager?
Note: I'm already running CM7 weeklies, ext4 etc.
I personally use cwm touch and haven't had any problems YET. I use it for all ROMS. This could be an option for you. It's gotten a few updates so some of the bugs could be out of it.
