Post what keyboards you replaced LatinIME with and if it worked. If it's a free keyboard, you can post an APK but remember, you HAVE to mod permissions to
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
or 644 in chmod terms.
You also need to reboot after you chmod the apk so it can take effect.
Warning, I am not liable for whatever you do to your system.

Smart Keyboard Pro works but I had to download the APK and put it in /system/app and install it from there.
I have tried other keyboards and I just can't be without SKP. You can adjust key height, calibrate the keyboard and also set it to always show long-press characters so there is no need to use ALT or 123 keys about 75% of the time.
SKP also supports both keyboard and sound themes.

Swiftkey tablet does work. I had to moved it to system/app and installed it. If you don't install it, if just give you errors after restart. Once you installed it and configured it, it work.

I downloaded, moved to system/app/ then changed the permissions and installed. I then restarted then opened the app on its own which ended in force closing constantly also tried settings/input method/swiftkey and got the same constant force closing issues. Could it be the APK I have or am I missing something? Please help

I replaced the LatinIME.apk when I got the hackers keyboard... is there different ones per keyboards? If so where can I find them? If not then whatvelse could be off, I've done everything everyone's said to do and got nothing but the dreaded force closes....

Rename the APk to LatinIME.apk, and replace the one in /system/app and then change permissionsn

For the life of me I can't get Smartkeyboard Pro to work. The keyboard works but when I go into settings I get constant FC.
Have you been able to get into the settings menu? If so what version are you using?
Thanks.

Renamed the apk to LatinIMe.apk checked preferences and still nothing but force closes... the new keyboards are showing up in the list though, I just can't get them to work?

Can someone try the new Swype beta that came out last week? I'd do it but my stupid GF refuses to give me my NT for two more weeks, because "it's not a Christmas gift if you open it on Thanksgiving."

Finally after fooling around for hours on this thing I got it to work thanks for all the help guys

I am wondering if the new version of the beta works, as well.

Got two keyboards working
I've managed to get the Thumbs keyboard and Swift Tablet X working by installing once and then installing it a second time immediately. The force closings stop after the second install and they both show up in my keyboard list. No file swap or rename was required.

[Release] De-VZW'd Car Dock - Carhome .apk

Return to stock. No more Verizon Navigation. You do need Google maps / navigation installed.
Ripped from Mesmerize, de-odexed.
Before adding this to your device, make sure you've renamed /system/app/CarHome.apk and CarHome.odex (or move them, etc..)
Then just add the new .apk to /system/app. I use adb to push, but as long as you get the file there in /system/app it should be fine. You do not install this .apk, just copy it.
Code:
adb push CarHome.apk /system/app
All done.
If you see any FC, just reboot. Post up with any issues.

Ok, I'm not sure I am doing it right in ADB. I can get my phone recognized but when I try to push the .apk to system/app it tells me that it failed to copy and Permission Denied. Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks for the help. I got it moved over using Super manager instead of Root Explorer. I restarted my phone but I don't see anything different other than the fact that now when I press Voice Search, I get a Force Close. The Navigation button is still linked to VZ Navigator. What exactly is meant by de-VZW'd? I do have google maps/nav installed FWIW.

You are rooted, right? I'm guessing you may not have CWM installed? You should have no trouble pushing the file via adb with CWM installed. CWM changes the way the adb daemon runs on the device.
Might try renaming the original CarHome.apk and CarHome.odex to CarHome.apk.old and CarHome.odex.old, then moving the file I posted to /system/app. Don't install it (it probably won't install anyway), just put it in /system/app.
Could you install the apk file using App Installer from the market?

Thanks for the verification, I'll update that in the original post.
Hmm, noticed something funky with this. When you hit the navigation function, it asks you to choose Google Navigation or Your Navigator, and if you choose the second option, it will hang and force close. I think I'm going back to the Car Home app ripped from the Vibrant, as it instantly launches Google Navigation with giving you a useless menu prompt.

I've noticed that too, not sure why it's doing that... Obviously you choose 'Google Navigation', but if the extra touch to do so is a deal-breaker, definitely use some other launcher. I'll see if I can find out where that's coming from and get rid of it.
Besides that quirk, the only differences between that one and the Vibrant version are slightly different icons and icon placement, so not a big deal.

Awesomeness!! would be great if you could make Navigation go by default to Google Navigation instead of asking.

Just rename your existing .apk and .odex to .old or whatever you prefer, then just push. You may need to reboot afterward.
This was from the Mesmerize, so the "odexed" version would just be ripping this from the system dump and copying it over.. not sure if that would work, I didn't try it out. Makes sense to me that it would, but you know how picky these things are.

any chance someone can get the desk cradle apk from either the mesmerize or vibrant to complete the de-bing/vzw. car cradle works perfect thanks to this but having the desk cradle apk from either phones to work with our phones would be icing on the cake...

Gingerbread Keyboard For Rooted Devices

For all who might be interested to try... Following the instructions in this article will help you to install Gingerbread keyboard:
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/12/06/download-gingerbread-keyboard-for-rooted-devices/
Cheers
Confirm, it's working. It is better though to have the language set for English...if one would choose another language, it may have some missing characters. For example, I had also Romanian selected. When I switch to it, the first row displays only some of the numbers (the ones that are typed when you long press on the key). 1,2,4, 5 and 9 are shown (if I remember exactly) the rest of them being inaccessible. If you switch to English, everything looks just fine.
Keyboard seems (and looks) better than the standard Froyo keyboard (and this is how it's advertised too), has some new functionality, but I still prefer Better Keyboard. For those using English layout and don't have Better Keyboard installed, this Gingerbread ported keyboard will be a better option than the standard one (and best thing...it's free)
it works but that's about it.
The dictionary doesn't know some of the basic words even though it supports dutch. :s
And I don't think its made for hdpi, it looks pretty small.

Also, my phone has the same resolution as the legend (480x800) and the keyboard seems to be sized correctly.
Anyone else with this FC issue?
The Legend is 480*320, not 800*480.
When I tried, the installation failed because it couldn't verify the zip file.

I got it to work by downloading the keyboard zip made by fabulous. Google it. If you have a problem with the keys being to small, you need to download the LCD Density app, set it to 240 and restart, then set it back to the default of 160 and restart.
They keyboard should be fine after that. I've been using it for a while and prefer it to Swype, HTC, and Android 2.2.
One last note. Restarting the phone may cause the keyboard to revert to a small state so be prepared to do the LCD fix again.

First, you need to put the APK on your SDcard:
Download link: here
Next you need to push to your SDcard either through adb or just using USB mass storage.
Afterwards copy to system/app/ using a file manager *ES file manager or Root explorer is recommended. Root Explorer for those of you who use paid apps or ES for those of you who want a free alternative. I used Root explorer.
Here is the VERY important part, mod the permissions to the following:
Code:
Read, Write
Read
Read
Finally, just reboot and you will have it.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Code:
You can redownload the stock APK from [URL="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/LatinIMEbackup.apk"]here[/URL]
and follow the rest of the guide starting after you download. It's the same universally. Also note that not all keyboard apps work well in system which is why I did it with the stock gingerbread app. Ice cream sandwich keyboards aren't too /system friendly.
it works well. I hope we can get the ICS keyboard up and running. Their is just a small visual issue with background behind the keys being white not black like in your screen shots.
I'd be happy if I could get Swiftkey Tablet up and running, but I'll give this a shot. I found the menu where you can change the colors of the default keyboard, but some other ones have added functionality that I'd like to have.

I backed up then uninstalled by Titanium Backup, and used the installer without a hitch.
Running UnNamed 1.3.2 though, not sure if the newer versions may be the reason why its not working properly.
Cool. Must be the fingerprint with the new UnNamed.

If I say yes now its just a placebo effect in my head.
Have to do some testing with it for a few days and see if its noticeably different or the same.

I've been using it for about two days now and with the exception of an beta-ish incident I had with it (it stopped working after my first reboot if the phone and I had to reinstall it), I can confidently say that this update makes Swype much, much better. Swype always used to piss me off within the day for the simplest of reasons, but with all the new gestures, dictionary options and (finally) contextual typing, it's hard to put this one down. And it should be mentioned that I'm a huge keyboard junkie, if that exists. I have pro versions for most of the keyboards on the market and constantly switch between them because they generally all disappoint me in one way or another.
The voice recognition is naturally better now that the company has been acquired by Nuance, but it isn't quite up to the accuracy of choice dictation on the iPhone 4s, for whatever reason. Is it better than what it used to be on Swype/Android? Hell yes. In addition, this can do languages other than English, something I found particularly amazing.
All in all, I like it.

I can try and do it manually... we'll see how it turns out.
Good luck, after the holidays i'm going to read up on theming.

I just did a proof of concept, just to see if it works... It's really simple actually!!!!
I did orange and blue (Denver Broncos colors) if you guys want it, just install it like normal.
Here is how to do it:
You take that .apk file thats in the OP, make a few copies of it just incase...
Then you get 7zip, open it up with 7zip... copy all the files in "assets/keyboard" to a new folder on your computer.
The files you need to edit are preceded by "display0_" since we have wvga screens.
The way I did it was open it up in photoshop (the images, that is) and edit the file and save it.
The files I editted were:
background
caps
capsbutton
funcbutton
numbutton
selbutton
textbutton
AFTER EDITTING!!
This is where it gets tricky...
You open that original .apk with the 7zip proggy and you transfer all those images back into it, in the proper folder.
Now you need to sign it using apkmanager or whatever you may want. Open it up in apkmanager, and sign it (using the batch signing folder thing option choice thing).
DONE!
Oops guess my message by xda app didn't go through.
The theme did work perfectly, good job!
Would It be too much to ask for a dark-themed swype like on ICScrewD or unNamed?
Then I can finally update swype

I second this!!
But I am going to try myself with the instructions of samvillian.
Just haven't had time, hopefully this weekend I can start practicing on theming.

I've got most of swype done. Issues im running into is apktool is unable to decompile or recompile a working product. Assume because of the updated version. Ill keep pressing.

[MOD][VZW Edition] Add all apps to multi-window build LJB

This is only for Verizon Stock with root injected
4.1.1
Build: JRO03C.I605VRALJB
Steps:
1) Please mount your system as read/write, extract the files in the attached zip file, and copy:
FlashBarService.odex to /system/app
services.odex to /system/framework
Make sure you are actually replacing the old files and not renaming them.
The proper permissions should be rw- r-- r-- on both files (thanks Sylvaria)
2) Then reboot. Shouldn't have to clear dalvik-cache...
3) (recommended) delete "/data/data/com.sec.android.app.FlashBarService" and reboot once more
Potential issues
**If your apps appear in the edit menu and you have trouble adding apps to the multi-window bar, check in your /data/data folder and see if you have a folder named flashbar. If so, delete it and reboot to see if that fixes your issue. "/data/data/com.sec.android.app.FlashBarService"
**If you cannot see the edit button on your multi-window bar, make sure your DPI is set to 320 via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35036854&postcount=108
Warning
services.odex is actually in use, so you may not be able to replace it before it reboots, which will cause you to boot loop. Just ODIN the root image again and try again. People have gotten it to be replaced after an attempt or two.
from nosit1: "This might sound extremely stupid, but when replacing services.odex (do it last of course) if you screen is on, turn it off before pushing it to your device (if using adb). "
from shelooga: "I went into a bootloop, but a battery pull fixed it, no odin required, fyi."
---
Please let me know if this works, as it works for me. If you do go into a boot loop you will have to re-flash the root ODIN image.

Nice! Does it matter if I've uninstalled some of the stock apps?

Can some one verify that Netflix will continue to play even if you switch to the second window? Thanks.
Getting this weird issue where I can't add apps that aren't listed in the first page of apps. Like, the first 8 rows of apps add fine, but everything below that (once I have to scroll down to see them) only add apps from those first 8 rows, instead of adding the actual app I'm drag-and-dropping.
Not sure what's up.

Let say you add youtube to the top and message text to the bottom, let youtube playing some video while you switch to text, while you texting is youtube stills playing??
All the apps show up for me but it wont let me add them to the bar.

Works Great. Thanks! Loving the fasr progress being made with our device.. Just thought i would mention that after i added the seconmdf file to service.framework my device froze the second i answered yes to "already exists, wamt to replace"? After 20 seconds it rebooted and everything is silky smooth as expected. So dont freak out and throw your phone across the room. patience is a virtue. Thanks again!

Check in your /data/data folder and see if you have a folder named flashbar. If so, delete it and reboot to see if that fixes your issue.
Tried re-pasting the files over, same issue still persists. Not sure what's up at all. Pretty annoying.
I wonder if unfreezing my bloatware would make a difference? Not a big fan of doing that, though.

It still plays while I browse the internet, so it should probably work as well with messages

I posted this just before your post, see if this works for you.

Mine works as well but for some apps it does this weird thing were it drags in another app. For example I tried dragging youtube and it would always drag the app two spots above it instead.

Would love to try this, but no matter what I do I get permission denied when I try to push these files. Mounted system as r/w in Terminal Emulator, from ADB, and in Root Explorer with no success.
