Asus Transformer Prime TF700T official with 1920 x 1200 res and new design to improve GPS
Published on The Verge - All Posts | shared via feedly mobile
Asus is today introducing the TF700T, a new variant of its Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet, whose major upgrade is a move to a 1920 x 1200 resolution. That makes two Android tablets moving to a 1080p res at CES 2012, following Acer's unveiling of the Iconia Tab A700 yesterday.
The new Transformer Prime isn't sacrificing quality for quantity with its move to a much higher pixel density — its display is still made of the SuperIPS+ stuff that impressed us so much when reviewing the TF201. Another highly significant upgrade is in the tablet's rear cover design, which has been altered to allow for better GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth performance. Great for new buyers, to be sure, but we wonder how happy owners of the current-gen Prime will be...

Ah too late, duplicate thread. Sorry!
Well, things announced at CES are released when? Late 2012? You can barely get a TFP at $500 right now. Is this thing going to cost $700 and be sold alongside the TFP?
hmmm ....

A bit early to decide the truth of this but considering the out cry about the bootloader, i dont think Asus will want a whole bunch of angry 1st gen customers spamming facebook again.

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF700T will go on sale in North America in Q2, priced at $599 for the 32GB model and $699 for the 64GB model.
I'm still waiting for an order of the TF201 to actually go through for me and now I'm beginning to wonder if that’s a sign. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is now stuck in the uncomfortable situation of decided whether to continue trying to get the TF201 or to suck it up and wait a few months for the new Prime to come out.
Asus is trying to market the TF700T as some sort of Transformer Prime HD, but, due to the TF201's issues, this looks like a "quick fix" model leaving the early adopters of the Prime behind. I've noticed some arguments going for both sides and I was wondering if anyone had a clear argument for waiting.
Not a lot of information is out there right now, but to me the argument is as follows:
Is paying $100 more and waiting ~5 months worth better GPS/WIFI/BT, Resolution, & front-facing camera?
I would appreciate any input from current TF201 users.

I am in the camp where I do think this TF700T is a bug fix release. I do not care for the higher resolution screen which may introduce other unknown issues. The current Prime is an excellent tablet. The only issue for me is knowing there is a design defect with the back plate. I may never use GPS but I do not know what I will be do in the future and that is what pisses me off. You will need to decide if that is a big deal for you or not.
So, I got my prime today from amazon. Then i noticed the tf700t post. I should be pissed but I'm enjoying my prime too much. And I don't know the specs of the tf700t yet. If its a tegra3 with 1920x1200 then its worth it.

Well i currently own the prime and its awsome I would rather have my prime then wait over 6 months for the next one just to get basically a better screen resolution. The screen on the prime is already very crisp and clear and you probably wont notice that much of a diffrence between this screen and the new ones screen. As for gps, its really over rated because you really arent going to be using it al all. Wifi and BT preformance is pretty good on the prime. So basically your paying 100$ more and waiting at least 5-6 months for GPS and a higher res display
Well judging by the many faults I'm finding with the TF201, I think I had my fill of going on hype buys from ASUS.
Show me ICS and I'm done.
Unless you really want that higher res display and you actually are going to use the GPS, I would just get the current Prime. By the time the TF700T launches, there will probably be faster quad cores
Five months in the tech world is not "waiting", it's a generational change.
Should I buy (insert any product here) now or wait 5 months for (next generation product) has been the same question since the first Macintosh came out, it seems.

I take you don't have a Prime and you have been overly influenced by the issue discussion that ignores the 95% of happy users. Love my PRIME!
Grab that Lenovo!
I have and love my Prime and I am getting the keyboard dock in the mail tomorrow. Am I upset about todays announcement? Not at all. Everyone that is *****ing needs to get over themselves. ASUS runs a business and if you think the tech you purchase today isn't outdated two weeks later, you are surely misinformed. Relax!!
I am going to enjoy my prime and dock for the next 4 to 5 months and then sell the TF201 and upgrade when it comes out in Q2. The dock is said to work on both models.

I don't think there's any "good supplier" because the defects are because of ASUS, not the stores. So I guess it just depends on whether you're lucky or not. I got a 32GB Grey from Best Buy that had absolutely no problem and now my 64GB Grey from NewEgg is also absolutely perfect. Besides 1 dead pixel that fixed itself after a couple of hours.

I say you wait for it so when it finally comes out you can asked yourself the same question about the TF700T cause the super duper optimus prime x3 gets announced. it's a endless cycle bud
If the 700 comes out 5 months from now, it will be absolutely clobbered. It packs specs to compete with January-March/April devices. 5+ months from now, even higher resolution, more RAM, A15 processors, and similar spec bumps will start coming out. The 700 has 3 months to come out before it's too little too late.
I ordered I Transformer Prime on 12/23, didn't receive nothing and now they're announcing the "new" prime??? I'd love to resist the urge the get "this" Prime and wait some more MONTHS, but i've waited nearly 2 month. Can't resist any longer.

I know exactly where you're coming from, and after reading these posts, I have decided to stick with the TF201. Now I just have to hope that my OfficeDepot order doesn't get backordered again.
I'm wondering if I should just cancel my pre-order for the 64GB Prime TF201 and either wait for the Transformer Prime TF700T or just go with a different tablet entirely. Keeping a close eye on what is being announced at CES 2012.
I am in the same boat. I suppose nobody can answer this for us though. The only thing keeping me from cancelling my order is how long this one has taken. I don't want to wait four more months (or more) to have a tablet.
I read a lot of comments that say the wifi works fine for people. The gps isn't a huge issue, but I did pay for it, and I'd like to have a device without defects.
Mines coming in a few days, im gonna take it out and play with it, see how far i can go with wifi. If its horrid ill take it back to staples and tell them its defective. I really need the wifi to work a decent distance as I'm constantly moving around the hospital.
Asus has announced the TF700T for release in "Q2", and they already have demo units in the field NOW.
See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xDDxMusFK9E
The guy who's "reviewing" it is from an Asus tech blog and says it will be available "really soon". They could not have come up with the TF700T in the 10-14 days since the GPS desaster became obvious, they must have known probably since early/mid-december and started working on the TF700T. It's the fastest model update in Android tablet history. It will be ready by end of march if you ask me.
Considering all the problems this device (Prime) comes with, although being a nice device, it is NOT worth the full price tag. Looking back at the last 3 weeks, I feel like I paid Asus 600€ for doing beta testing. This doesnt work, that doesnt work, updates fail, redo updates manually... Nope, not worth 600 €.
So, long story short, I have one and knowing the Prime now, I would cancel my order if I still could.
I am talking to my online vendor about returning it since I'm out of my 14 day return policy window. I am considering the TF700T or GT 7.7 for the next "try". The GT 7.7 should be good enough for the media playback I mostly want it for (hell, my Galaxy S2 can handle the codecs...).
The TF700T will be quite nice but after the Prime experience I dont really want to give Asus any more business...
Plus we'll have to see how well the Tegra3 can drive a 1080p screen.
Hello guy I like to know if u guys know if i buy a new transformer prime like let me say to day if the new tablet its going to come with wifi and gps issues or Asus fix the issue with the GPS and wifi already cause I have the original transformer but I want to give this one to my wife and get a new one for me but if the transformer prime still with issues I'm going to get a tf300 its no better than the prime but its better than original transformer so what u guys think about that ???

The screen is wayyyy better on the prime. Go with the prime. Or the infinity pad if/when its out.
ok thats good what abouthe gps and the wifi the new prime come with that fix it or still the same
get the prime. Wifi issues are "Supposed" to be fixed in newer units. According to asus reps and email exchanges someone posted. Its worth checking out. if unsatisfied, just return, exchange it, or wait till infinity pad or asus/google nexus tablet releases.

The Infinity has a plastic strip across the back that should clear up most wifi or gps issues. I really haven't had any issues with wifi but GPS is nonexistent without the dongle. I would honestly say if you are wanting something now the Prime is the best out there. If you want great wifi, gps, and want something now that works out of the box I would grab a cheaper tablet (Xoom has a poor screen but the price is great at <=300 on sale) to hold you over until the Infinity comes out.
All of this IMHO
-My build.prop thinks I'm a GT-I9300 but alas this is still an OG Epic 4g with CM9
I don't know about Wifi/Bt issues, but the GPS on my C5 is pretty awful. W/o help from Wi-fi it takes forever to get a 48-72 foot accurate lock indoors and I have seen it go down to an 18 foot accurate lock outdoors. Have no idea how the GPS performs in tracking though.
Has Asus dropped support for the tablet?

There seems to be no mention of the TF201...
I have to look up that thread where people used the TF300's update on the Prime when Jellybean initially came out.
hate Asus
i had a TF101 and asus did the same thing to that too ...
they didn't support it after 1 year of release .
i will never buy any of Asus products again .
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!
Although it was posted on November, I hope it's still true:
http://www.androidauthority.com/asus-android-4-2-update-works-transformer-tablet-versions-133015/
Plus, the TF300 did get 4.1 before our Prime, so I still have my hopes up.
lol
so predictable
ROM on, my friends. ROM on.
Its all very well saying rom on... But how long will devs be deving? ROMs are already thin on the ground. Anyway asus should be supporting our tablet.
Guess we will have to wait and see.

I own a TF300 which got it today but I do feel sorry for Prime owners. Samsung did the same to Tab 10.1 owners. The Prime is more than capable.
Although, there could still be hope as other models weren't mentioned either (i.e Padfone 2).

I work at Best Buy and installed the update on our display model. I added a user account so that we could show off that feature (unique in the android and iOS tablets we stock) and played around with it a little. I was quite impressed, the user switching works well but is a little laggy on the change over, however it loads everything so once you unlock it's quick. Asus have really changed the camera app (I think, it's very differend to the one on my Prime) but I didn't have a lot of time to play about with it - photosphere wasn't obvious. There is a setting to toggle the new UI so you can stick with the old notification position etc. if you choose. The lock screen widgets look nicely implemented but I have only used them on my Nexus 4 before and never had my hands on a Nexus 10. The lack of any installed apps limits the number of available widgets and their usefulness.
Hope this helps.

They removed Photosphere (although I don't need it).
It's definitely faster than Android 4.1.
It's good of Asus to provide options (in case a select few don't want to change the UI).

Asus is actually one of the faster technology companies to upgrade/update their products. I seriously doubt it'll be the end of the year before the update.
Actually its really predictable that Asus will no longer support the Prime... just hoping developers on XDA and all the people here keep this Prime thread alive and keep our Prime "alive" !!
