[Q] How to configure vibration/App install location - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi, I think I'm just being obtuse now by not finding the answer to my 2 current issues. If somebody can point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.
Problem 1: When managing apps, there is a button that either say "Move to Phone" or "Move to Media Area". What does either mean? There are some inconveniences that results from having an app in the media area. So I was wondering how many storage space I have on my "Phone" and how do I make app install there on default.
Problem 2: My phone, which is stock, doesn't seem to vibrate on email/text messages. And since my phone is on vibrate most of the day and I communicate mostly by text. You can see how it is a problem. Is there anyway around it?
Again, thank you in advance for the help!

Problem #1: your phone should automatically install apps to the phone. The media area is the phone's internal SD card. There's 3gb phone storage and 7gb "media area" or internal SD storage.
Problem #2: you need to go into the settings in your email and messaging apps to enable vibration when you get and email or text.

Thanks, problem 2 is solved! I'm coming over from iOS so I have this concept that text vibration should be somewhere inside overall settings area. Never considered text to be an "app" with its own setting. Boneheaded move on my part.
Problem 1 is still there. Some app seems to default to "media area" and I'm not sure why. I don't think my phone is full as I seem to be able to move those manually to the phone. For example, one app that constantly install to the media area is Mantano Reader. I would move the app to the phone but everytime there's an update it would go back to the media area and I was wondering if there's a way to defaulting it to the phone. I think it's completely arbitrary... Minecraft installs to the media area by default, Bible and Fruit Ninja installs to the phone.. Really puzzled by this.
Thanks for the help on Problem 2 though, really appreciate it!

I like reading these post sometimes, I never had neither of your problems and I'm stock.
#1. I did not do anything, but everything goes to SD Card.
#2. Again, I did not do anything, but upon getting e-mail, text, whatever.........phone virbrates once and the green notification lights comes on? (Me and my daughter got into it about her iPhone, no light or notification)
Thanks to braindead for the tip, maybe I will look back and see.............

I'm stock too(until somebody release a stable ICS rom). And I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Just for fun, I installed mantano reader to see what happens. It went directly to media area, and I have everything set to go to phone. So it's not just you.
I also noticed I have a couple other apps that have defaulted to the media area. I think some apps are just set up to do that by the developer, and my guess is that it has something to do with the amount of storage space the app requires (my two apps were Sims 3 and mear, both of which can take up some major storage space).
I don't know how to force the app somewhere else without being rooted. If you're rooted, you can use ROM toolbox to choose the default install location, or some other app2SD solution I'm sure.

Aww, that's unfortunate. Thanks all around!

[Q] Ringtone Issues, any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help with this. I've had my Atrix since launch and there's been about 4 times now (all seemingly after i've hooked the phone to computer with either phone portal, windows sync, or mass storage) where the assigned ringtones for contacts and even my regular ringtone has been changed or reassigned to some random song from my library. I don't know if there's something to hooking it up and it messes with the memory that juggles the ringtones/songs or what. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, has it been addressed/fixed? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
I have the exact same issue and have been posting about it on the Motorola forum as well. Over there the Motorola folks ask you questions and try to get a fix out to everyone, so please check it out if you haven't already.
My issue has happened a lot morethan yours it seems, however, I use extra batteries, so the phone reboots more often.
This is what I posted over there a little while ago:
Internal phone storage keeps disappearing
The "Disappearing ringtones" discussion was closed and merged with this one, but my issue is not the same as the internal memory being wiped.
My files are still on the card and internal memory, but the contacts, alarms, messaging, calendar, etc apps can't remember the tones I set.
I have copied the files to the following locations with the same issue recurring:
/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/system/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
Even after moving them with RootExporer to the "non-mountable" storage (/system) they are still reassigning and setting to "unknown".
Possibly related issue. The playlists I create with MixZing, winAmp, and astro are empty are the phone reboots.
Occasionally I get the "no files" error when I check the mounted card in file manager, but if I manualy unmount and remount the card, they are still there.
I keep missing calls, texts and having my alarms "silent". This is getting frustrating. I bought the Atrix on launch day so I need to exchange NOW if that is what is needed.
Other than the above and the losing data connection issue, I LOVE THIS PHONE
Yeah, i've placed my ringtones (all .m4a format) on both the internal/external memory slots and for some reason, when it gets hooked up i'm in the same boat you are...very frustrating i've missed calls and messages as well. surprising that no one from Moto has a resolution for it...
I've run into the same problem, and was planning on moving 'em into the /system/media folder...but it sounds like that won't fix it. Drats.
I've had this issue as well. The random song problem seems to only affect contacts I have set up with a custom tone. No telling what song/sound will play for which contact. Otherwise it has simply changed my default ringtone to a particular mp3 that then becomes the default tone. Really weird.
I do still have the issue with the files in the /system folder, but much less. So I would try them there to lessen the problem. Westill need a complete fix though.
This issue is still a problem. There are even some apps that can't see the files on the internal card or external card. Even after the OTA update this problem is driving me crazy.
I think you dont hear about this issue more because some people dont connect there phone to the computer or remove the battery often. It seems to be a problem with reading the info off the card when it is remounted. On my captivate when I remounted the card it would always scan the card. This phone doesn't.
Any ideas.
Yeah I had this problem too. Was the only thing, and I mean the only thing I didn't like about this phone. I found the only way to fix it is to root the phone and move your personal ringtones to the '/system/media/audio/ringtones' folder using Root Explorer (you can buy it oin the market. Great app BTW). This solved all my problems. I know it's not "right" but it works great. Now I have zero problems with this phone.

[Q] Bluetooth not working after root....

Hey guys I rooted my Atrix about a month ago using gingerbreak and I finally got a new Bluetooth for it but when I try to turn on the Bluetooth on the phone it attempts to then dose nothing. I have tried restarting the phone and it didn't work. I don't know what else I can do besides factory restoring it, and if I can avoid that I would like to. Any ideas besides that?
Thanks,
Adam
No one has any ideas?
I have the same issue on two different phones. A soft reboot usually gets it working again, until I toggle it off. Then it won't turn on til next reboot.
I have the same exact problem.... tried a lot of things, but none succedd

I tried battery pulling it and that didn't work either sadly.
Okay, Maybe this info helps. I believe its has something to do with a specific program being moved to the SD Card or sd card mounting.
I just had this happen. Bluetooth would not turn on at all. I decided to play Chuzzle and when my battery went low, I plugged the phone into my comp USB port. It disconnected the SD card in lieu of mass storage. Killed my game because it resides on SD Card. At this point, I decided to test bluetooth and it worked!! Don't have time to test it further but. I suspect something residing on the SD card maybe the culprit. Unfortunately, I have over 30 things on it so segmenting out is going to be a pain.
Do you all have programs on the SD card?
Yeah, i moved 111 apps using apps 2 sd... cant tell which one is related to bluetooth...
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I was having the same trouble and noticed that plugging in USB in storage mode would "fix" my bluetooth... I used Optimize Toolbox too clear all my cache and remove old SMS messages (after a backup) and bluetooth seems to be working again
*Edit* this didn't seem to last after I moved a few apps back to the SD card... I'm giong to keep messing with this...
after much pissing around with moving apps back and forth the internal SD card no longer mounts when i plug into my PC... interesting... I'll continue to report any progress I make
I've removed the physical SD Card and determined the problem lay in the internal SD Card...
ok after some seemingly "random" application moves from SD to phone I have this "working". I think it's a possibly corrupt internal SD but I haven't gotten any of the warnings that I see other people get where the phone explicitly says as much, however here is why I still suspect it:
as I was using Optimize Tool Box to move apps I noticed it was moving them rather slowly and taking a few extra seconds to re-load the app list, after one move (a Dolphin HD plugin full screen froyo incase that matters) I noticed the refresh seems snappier,
I went out to my home screen and hit a bluetooth widget and BT started working, I tried moving a couple different apps back and it stopped working.
Here is a full list of apps I moved OFF my SD in the event that it is still app related and a list of my apps might be handy to see who has common apps
Remote VNC Pro
My Tracks
Knots Guide
ConnectBot
Retro Defense
Best Apps
FBReader
Fullscreen for Froyo
Net Ping
AndFTP
Amazon Kindle
BlastMonkeys
KeePassDroid
Terminal Emulator
AndroZip
DailyComix
Dungeon Defenders
SilverEdit
Linux Commands
Handcent Emoji Plugin
Movie Free
My Backup Root
OSMonitor
Handcent SMS Skin(Metal)
SMS Backup+
Thinking Space
I hope this can help someone fix their phone or better yet get us a litter further towards an actual solution.
These are on my list. They should not be moved to SD:
Firefox
Brain Cube
Rugby
Anyway, the problem seems to be solved on 4.5.91. I've been moving apps all day and yet my bluetooth is still working.

[Q] How to pull up low space application manager?

When the space gets low on the Evo, it pops up a message, asking if you want to clear space, allowing you clear cache, multiple remove apps at one time, or multiple move apps to the SD card at one time..
I've only been able to access that, when it comes up.
is there a way to manually bring that app up?
.. I'm low on space, and i dismissed it as i was doing something else.
i've tried searching google. but that didn't do much good. haha.

There is two ways to do this one is opening your app drawer and click menu you will see "remove app" click that and it ill automatically pop-up on a tab called "Downloaded" click on an app and it will give the screen that I believe you are looking for.
Another way to pull this up is go to your settings and click "Applications" and then click "Manage Applications" and it will take you to the same screen.
Sorry if this is not what you were looking for.
Thanks for trying. but thats the Android Application manager..
The App i'm talking about, wasn't on my EVO4G, so i'm sure it's an HTC App. Made to clear space easier.. it's almost like a low space wizard. haha. hmm.
Aha. Found it on the HTC Site.. Finally..
From the Home screen, press , and then tap Settings.
Tap SD & phone storage > Make more space.
On the Clean cache screen, choose whether to clear the cache of rarely used apps only or all apps.
On the Application storage screen:
Tap Move to SD card if there are apps that you can transfer to the storage card.
Tap Uninstall if there are apps you'd like to remove.
On the Mail & Messages storage screen:
Set fewer days of mails to download so that older mails will be removed from the storage automatically.
Lower the number of text and multimedia messages per conversation.
Tap Finish.
Sorry, but thanks I did not even know about that feature haha.

[Q] Problems with Turn on USB storage

Hi,
I have htc legend with C7 installed. The USB storage used to run
quite well until some day ago. Now whenever I turn it on, the status bar on
top gets hidden somewhere, and I cannot find anyway to turn it off other then
restarting. But status bar is only one problem, my computer won't show any
USB storage, and there is no way I can access the files in my device.
What could be the problem? Why is my status bar gets hidden? Also I cannot
find turn on/off USB storage option in WIFI settings menu. where is it?
Reflash your rom and everything will be running perfectly again.

I think you might have some system apps on your SD card so when that dismounts the phone crashes.
I was hoping to fix it without having to reinstall things. I dont want to do everything again , unless I go for ICS
I have been moving apps to SD card using App mover utlity (only the apps that it suggest). I will have a look again, but I don't think I can move something that systems needs to run.
Here is the list of apps in SD card which i think may be causing some troubles:
Google+
Hotmail
Messages Widget
Google+ was updated a few months after release to have it natively moved to the SD card. The only drawback is you can't use the post widget. (Which really isn't so great)
For Hotmail, you can use Hotmail Exchange ActiveSync with the Android Mail app. It's the mail app you see when you forget to install GApps. Setup: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/08/windows-live-hotmail-gets-exchange-activesync.ars
Works great.
As for the Messages Widget, I don't know what it is. But since it has the word widget, I'll tell you that Android doesn't support widgets for apps that are moved to the SD card, unless it's on an ext partition. So you'd best leave that alone.
If you're absolutely certain that these apps are the root of your problem, consider these alternatives. If you're not, still try 'em out. They're worth not risking workarounds for.

"Media Storage" filling up SD card

I have an HTC Sensation running CM10. The very day I installed the CM10 ROM this problem started, I get an error saying " Storage space running out. Some functions may not work". I can clear the data and everything works fine until the next time it happens. Some days it happens 2 or 3 times a day. As far as I can tell, this is not a common problem.
The only thing I can think is that it may have something to do with my BackCountry Navigator app. It has lots of aerial photographs. I suspect that it is trying to catalog them all. But, 700MB seems excessive. I have been trying to locate this large file or files to see analyze the data, but I'm not sure where they are located.
Anyone willing to help me tackle this problem?

If you figure the average picture is approximately 1MB in size, and ariel photographs are usually very detailed most likey 2MB (Or greater in some cases) it's not unrealistic for 350-700+ pictures to be cached by the app as you use it to navigate and view maps. Even navigating a small area with that level of detailed images will occur a large size cache quickly, which is likely why it sometimes fills up 2-3 times a day. I would recommend going into system settings, then application manager, and locating BackCountry Navigator then clear the apps cache. Also check the apps settings and see if it has any options for disabling image caching or limiting the cache size.

OK I cleared the cache which was less than 1MB. I also turned off caching. Cross your fingers.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. If I could find the actual file or files that were using up the remaining 706MB of my phone, I might be able to figure out what was going wrong.

Try using root explorer or a similar root enabled file browser to go to the application data folder then look for the BackCountry Navigator app's data folder and see what files you can find, you may find some hints as to why the application is using so much storage space.
Did you ever get this sorted out? I have the same problem. Sold my last phone due to this problem. It definitely has something to do with BCN. Is there a way to tell the phone not to catalog that folder?
BTW I'm running it on an S3.
I'm having the same issue on my EVO LTE, running Viper ROM so it happens on Sense too. Either I get a notification to move apps because I'm out of space, or I'll get an install error when trying to update apps. It's always Media Storage is huge, I can clear it but then sometimes my Music Files don't get recognized by players even though I can see them in a file explorer. Very frustrating.

I saw the same thing as your 'Disk Usage' thumbnail above, except the path was "Storage card -> Apps -> Media Storage -> Data", and it was using 3GB (out of 5.8GB total internal capacity available to end-users). Clicking on 'Media Storage' and clicking 'Show' brought me to the 'Amazon Fire Media Storage' app (a system app, the logo being 'Fire' in a red square).
After clearing all the 'Media Storage' app data, it got regenerated to 3.7GB after a couple hours and filled up my internal storage again. I then deleted an ebook reader app that I remember installing a couple days ago, and it automatically shrunk to 300MB shortly afterwards without my manually clearing the 'Media Storage' app data. About an hour after that, though, it regenerated back to 3.7GB and filled up my storage again.
Anyone know what files are consulted to populate this Media Storage/Data file (i.e., video, audio, ebooks), what process/processes populate it, and what reads it? It would be really helpful to examine its contents to at least look for a rough idea on which apps are using it heavily, and/or honoring '.nomedia' to prevent scanning.
Device: Amazon Fire 7in KFFOWI, running rooted FireOS 5.1.1
