Hi All,
I screwed up my phone, after flashing with a custom rom it worked fine for a couple of days but now it doesn't work. I have no IMEI and even the baseband is unknown. I have not backed up my efs, and now it is corrupted i suppose.
There are many threads on this for the captiavte but none for the s2. I even tried the methods given in the captivate thread, but dint work. Is my phone trashed for good or can i fix it?..please help.
I recommend giving additional details, such as ROM flashed Method used...etc then maybe someone might be able to help. I have idea but there's a bunch of smart people on here that may help.
Good luck!

I am really confused on how you can lose an IMEI number on a phone.

Somehow he trashed his EFS partition... I wonder what in jivy's ROM could have caused this...
This guy has the same problem?? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386223
Edit: Oh, same person lol. Is the IMEI individual to the phone? Have you tried to "go back to stock/unroot" ? Or did you do a restore before you did any flashing/roms?
Funny that jivy's ROM is named iscrewed. I kid, I kid. It's a good ROM. I used for a couple Weeks, no problems for me.

I have no idea how i trashed my efs, in fact i dint even know something called efs existed till this happened. It was working fine when i went to bed, i get up in the morning and see i have no network. Even i dint know someone could lose their IMEI.
Yeah, I have tried going back to stock unrooted, factory reset, tried different roms, modems, kernels..nothing helped.
Hahahaha..yeah..ICsrewD screwed me..
So no one has any idea about fixing this?..or is my only bet to reset the flash counter and take it to store for a warranty claim?..or can they fix it?

If you have an original nandroid of your stock phone, I'd try to just push the efs folder and see if it helps. I had this happen on my cappy once and that was the only way I got it working again

Not sure if nandroids include the EFS partition... gotta check that.
I suggest reading through the I9100 forums - for whatever reason it happens far more often on the I9100 than it does here. In fact, you're the first person here to have a corrupt EFS.

Yeah I just looked it ins't included. Are the IMEI's specific to each phone or would it be universal to an AT&T GS2? I know I have a back-up of mine from when I unlocked it, maybe he could use that?
I tried to restore the nandroid backup..but dint work.
Yeah..probably i am the first one to have this problem here.

IMEIs are specific to each phone...
The I9100 forums are likely to have some useful threads - this is an item that is not any different between our device and the I9100.
I am trying out some methods on the I9100 forum..will keep you posted about the results.
I tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021&highlight=restore+IMEI and a couple more..no luck..everything else needs a backed up efs unfortunately which i dont have.

You have to make a copy of /efs. Not sure if there are any particular issues you have to take into account. I think it's just make a copy of the entire directory and transfer it off your phone, or to the external sdcard, or both.
or even better,
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 of=/sdcard/efs.img
I think EFS is p3 - need to check tonight.
I think I screwed did the same thing to me but I cmw whiped n did a different rom and I was good

Good one. I was going to go ahead and do this, so I searched for info on the efs partition. The only thing I found was I9100 suggesting it was 0p1. So I'll wait till you verify the correct partition for our phone.

Hi guys,
i flashed my I9100 with the Lite'ning ROM and after that my WLAN stopped working. I did some research and found out that my MAC address got erased from my eeprom, i think.
Some topics i found:
- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322225
I also tried recovering my EFS folder but no luck with this. My IMEI is still there and my phone is working perfectly fine except the WLAN.
If i try to activate my WLAN it just says "Error" and deactivates its self afterwards.
Like said before if i enter this code " *#*#232338#*#* " i get a message that says "File does not exists!! Unable to get MacAddress!!"
So is there any way to recover it or flash a new one?
I would really appreciate some help.
The last person to mention this on these forums (yesterday) didn't have an I9100 and was flashing stuff for the wrong device. Are you absolutely sure you have an I9100, and not one of the many variants? (check under your battery)

Possibly a bad flash, go into cwm mounts and storage and chose all the format options yes make sure you save what you need, then enter download mode and re flash

I searched again through the back side of my phone and the original package but no luck at all.
Would be really fantastic to get a complete efs/wifi backup surely without the original MAC-Address of the owner.

Your backed up EFS folder should have the details .
or a custom rom may have auto backed up your EFS .

It is possible to change the IMEI of a device you can find a few services out there to do it for you but it is generally frowned upon by the development community and in many cases considered illegal in the united states. You are very unlikely to find out how to change your IMEI on XDA as most people will assume the worst and assume that you stole a device (regardless of whether you did or not) and are trying to keep the device from being locked out.
You will have to edit a few files in the efs folder which ones I'm not sure but in any case good luck
- Cheers

Yeah I have AOKP.
Thanks i'll give that a try! Now that you say that, I wonder if the MTD formatting is what causes the IEMI spoofing.
Does no one else have a spoofed IMEI running ICS on their Vibrant?
I still want to run AOKP, if I can restore my IMEI, should I backup the /efs directory, then reflash AOKP and then restore /efs? Would that prevent me losing the real IMEI?
Update: Looks like my IMEI is back, thanks! Now how to get back to ICS and keep my IMEI...
Update 2: Not sure what I did different this time, but I redid the whole CWR > cm7 > ics and my imei is good still

Does this help?... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888193
Currently on Checkrom XWLA4 2.3.6 with Speedmod kernal.
Last night I performed a Titanium backup and a Nandroid backup in preparation for an upgrade. I had previously performed an EFS backup sometime back. I didn't perform the upgrade, just completed some backups. Anyways over night something seems to have gone wrong with my phone. I wake up to find that it's showing there's no SIM card detected and then when I checked baseband version and IMEI both are showing unknown as well as a bunch of other fields.
I've tried a number of ways to restore the EFS folder. I've tried GSII_Repair, EFS Pro 1.9, kTool, and a couple of manual methods. All of which give the same result.
Some strange things that I noticed, I have an EFS folder inside of an EFS folder. The /efs folder seems to have less files then the /efs/efs folder. Also /efs/efs folder was the fold that had the .nv_data.bak and .nv_data.bak.md5. Not sure if its suppose to be that way.
Wondering what the best way to try to get my phone up and running would be.
Thanks,
Lu.

The problem:
(a) You performed nandroid backup in CWM recovery while your phone was connected to the charger. This is a known bug of almost all versions of CWM recovery.
(b) Baseband missing means that your Modem was wiped off which happened as a result of the bug in (a.)
Further Explanation
a. this has nothing to do with your /efs folder
b. If baseband is missing then the phone can never read your IMEI, hence no network
Possible Solution
a. Download Modem (CWM zip format) of your choice. If you already have a modem then, skip to next step
b. Disconnect your phone from the charger
c. Boot to CWM recovery
d. Flash modem.zip you downloaded
e. Reboot phone
check your phone info after reboot (give your phone about 5 minutes to settle down), your IMEI, network etc should be back now
good luck

any recommendations? would it help if i tried a fresh install of xwla4 (2.3.6) or something newer like xwlpg (4.0.3)?

You shouldn't have messed with your efs partition after the issue came up. it's suppose to be the last solution and not the first one.
ok.
try this:
-Remove your SIM.
-Reboot to CWM recovery
-Flash modem
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-reboot phone
-Allow phone to stay for 5 mins.
-check your phone info, check IMEI
if both are back fine, just reinsert your sim and continue normal life.
let me know what happens

in your own case, where baseband and imei was missing, changing anything in the efs comes last because, if it's other thing related, flashing modem , firmware and things like that should fix the problem.
Then the last thing is messing with /efs partition.
Why, because, efs partition is not touched during flashing of ROM/firmware. It contains sensitive files, and should only be modified as last resort.

I've never changed my modem do I need too and is it flashable? thanks

If you've tried everything else, I suggest you take it to Service Centre near you. Looks like that fall is to be blamed.
P.S. Please post device related issues in their specific forums. That way you will get faster and better answers! :good:

So, your SIM card lost contact when the phone hit the floor and then instead of trying to remove the SIM card and put it back in you went and flashed the phone to solve the problem and that resulted in loosing IMEI number?

How to install stock rom ? Search. This has been covered here thousands of times over the past two years, I'm not about to regurgitate it because you can't be bothered searching. Get a stock rom for your carrier/country from Samfirmware, then read the guides/tutorials stickied near the top of the General section.
If you want this fixed it's going to take a bit off effort on your part, we can't do everything for you.
Have you
1) Try another SIM card?
2) Look at the mobile network setting? Look for any abnormal setting? can search the mobile provider etc?
3) Try to flash another modem driver?

If you want this fixed it's going to take a bit off effort on your part, we can't do everything for you.

Hi, to add on, maybe you should tried again flashing with different modem/radio. The different ROM that you flashed may be using the same modem/radio and they may not work on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
This link seems to have mentioned various modem/radio for S2. You may want to try it. You may want to refer to another working S2 and check out what is the working modem/radio working well in your area. Then you flash in the same radio/modem.
If this still does work, it may be really the dropping of your phone has kill some physical part of your phone?

still don't work? strange!
just now i experienced the similar issue like yours, no signal bar. this happen after my phone become no respond to any key press. i have to hard power up through long press. when it power up i then see that there is no signal.
so i quickly go to recovery and flash a Modem/radio that i downloaded earlier.
after flash and it booted with good signal.
but my cause of issue i believe is kernel related as i just flash a dorimanx kernel yesterday.

i tried all i could but the phone doesnt work,i took it to another service center in another state but the man told me is to buy another panel,so i bought the panel and he has fix it then i decided not to use the phone again so i sold the phone and bought Galaxy S3, im with s2 now i will first backup my efs before doing anything on the new phone,Thanks every one for the help
Hi everyone,
What would be the general steps to take to update to 4.3 from 4.0.4. I messed up my phone a while back updating (no signal basically, no calls, etc, yeah... my fault for not reading...) so I had to take it to a shop. They downgraded to 4.0.4 and I'm not even sure my IMEI is the same...
Anyways, how can I upgrade and not lose their "fix". I remember reading about backing up my modem, flashing then reflashing my modem. Would that be enough?
Is there any backups that I can do that will create an "image" of the phone that I can safely flash back to in case anything goes wrong?
I currently have SuperSu and I think CWM (but an older version).
Any help would be appreciated!
Backup your efs folder, then make a nandroid of your rom. You will end up with no network after upgrade, try patched modern and kernel but there is no guarantee.
Search and read for the hundreds of other people who did the same thing.

Hmm, alright.
I'll make an EFS back up and the nandroid of my ROM just in case anyways. Thanks.

take more than one EFS in many methods rather than single one.
