Navigation in Satellite/Traffic - How Hot? - HTC Rezound

I continue to try to see if my 2nd Rezound is prone to overheating. It either overheated and shut down at 113 or ran out of batteries.
I am wondering how hot people's Rezounds are getting on average when running Navigation (probably in LTE) in Satellite mode.
Any answers are appreciated.

113 is not hot enough to cause a thermal shutdown.

Thanks ... it is entirely possible it ran out of juice. I will test more tomorrow.
If people can please run Nav in Satellite/Traffic mode (in LTE) and let me know how hot your phone gets, it would be appreciated.

I navigated home today for about 45 minutes, all on 4G, while on the phone for part of that, all over Bluetooth and my phone never broke 102.

Hmmm

Evo4gLI - Were you in satellite mode? I think that pulls huge data and probably makes a difference (or not, what do I know). Thanks.

Layers. There is a satellite layer and a traffic layer. I believe both pull a lot more data than without. I am wondering if you got to 102 with these layers off or on.
For anyone else willing to help, I am looking for your temperatures with these layers on.
Thanks

No,I wasn't in satellite mode, but I don't think it pulls that much more anyway. I do think it's worth noting that mine was plugged in too via car charger.

Environmental factors like ambient temp come in to play as well. Cell reception plays a part also, lower signals means higher radio output, which means more power draw, that translates into more heat.

if it's charging via "USB mode", once it gets hot enough(over 100F) it stops charging and the battery drains.. you'd have to charge in "AC mode" to continue charging once the phone is hot... but yeah, if it gets 120+ then it'll start to overheat & shutdown.
best way to ensure it'll get a strong 'AC' charge is to use a power inverter

Bug using BT and WIFI And over heating

I have noticed on my device that when you run the wifi radio and turn on the blue tooth that the blue tooth will not operate or atleast not operate properly. However if you turn wifi off bluetooth works perfectly fine. Just appears to be a conflict when both operate together.
Also has anyone figured out the overheating issue with the radio during extensive use? The phone will stop charging when the radio heats up to much from steady use. IE tethering or sprint TV.

I keep the phone rested on a bag of ice. But this is rediculas, there is no call for a user to need to keep there phone resting on a bag of ice to use it.
Umm, just an FYI but the PPC 6800 does the same thing when actively using wifi for a long period of time. It will overheat especially if the keyboard is NOT extended and as a precaution, it will stop charging the battery.

It has been lightly said this is so, but in a yr of use and 6 ppc6800s I have been unable to replicate any of the symptoms.
the problem is this phone is on tiny and you have those radios and the processor running nonstop, things will get hot. i have not experienced those issues and i use wifi at the house due to me being on the fringe of cellular service. i also use BT at the same time... not always but i do use both, and the only thing i have noticed is the phone will still charging but that is exactly what the phone/battery is designed to do so thats not a bug and i dont think you are experiencing a bug..more likely just the results form the device getting hot...
not much you can do other than to keep the screen off when you can and try and keep the device cool...

I do understand that this is to be expected with that much going on. However, I'm on my 2nd touch pro because the first got so hot it wouldn't charge, not only with wifi use but also long telephone conversations. My current TP they sent me gets hot, but not THAT hot, and has never stopped charging. Some of the phones are simply better built than others at this point. The quality control over at HTC is really missing the mark.
There are a couple threads over at PPCGEEKS about this issue.
That being said, I love my TP and look forward to great use out of this baby.
i hear you but when Li-ION batteries get too hot they will stop charging. thats not a BUG but a SAFETY FEATURE. if your current device has not yet stopped charging then the battery has not gotten so hot as to make it unstable. i also agree some phones are built better than others--thats the cost of mass production.. cars (lemon law anyone?) and other items that arer mass produced folow the same suit....

It's not the battery getting to hot, the battery stays cool. It is the actual physical device over heating from the radio in the top portion of the phone. The phone itself overheats not the battery and it stops charging as well starts flaking on its wifi and BT capability's.
the electronics in the phone and baattery have thermistors that register the temps. if the environment AROUND the battery is past a certain temp level, all charging stops. again this is a part of the setup of devices that use Li-ION. if the device continued to get hot and continued to charge/maintain the battery power level, that could cause sreious issues if nothing is done about it.
again, sir, that is NO bug. its a shame the phone is so tiny--this makes it difficult for the heat to go anywhere--but keeping the keyboard open could help somewhat..
not trying to bust ya bro.. just pointing out some information...

Yeah, the safety feature that kicks in with charging the battery isn't a bad thing at all. Annoying, yes.
For what its worth I have done a little reading and this isn't just a TP issue. I think any phone with that much under the hood and being that small is going to have this issue, for now anyway.
Check out what people are saying about the G1 being hot
http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=4109.0
cforster,
i have always said that--re: the phone is so tiny with all thats going on inside that the heat has no where to go.
i remember overclocking on a pentium 3 400mhz to about 700mhz, that thing took a HUGE heatsink, so then i think my phone has a 528mhz cpu in it, and it probably doesnt use a heatsink at all, probably just a single layer of aluminum to spread the heat so i can't complain...my phone gets hot when wifi and gps run while im driving, i wish it wouldnt stop charging but it does, i just have to hold it in front of my a/c vents for a while and the charging re-starts where it left off
Guys, i've seen this happening even with my iPhone. When i put it in the car stand and the charger is plugged it will stop charging after a while because i have hot air from the vent blowing on it.
Any phone with a Li-ion battery in it will have such a fail safe mechanism cause you REALLY don't want that bat the catch on fire.. The industry as a whole has already had plenty of problems with Li-Ion batteries..
Adi
Shame to.. because I would use the wifi all day at work if I could keep it cool.. best thing I have come up with is a small ziplock and putting ice in it and setting the phone on top of it.. leaving the keyboard out doesnt help..

Droid RAZR Overheating Issues

I purchased a Droid RAZR on the day it was released and it has been running just fine. As of right now I am satisfied but I ran into something that worried me slightly.
Earlier today I had my phone in the Kickstand case/belt clip and hadn't used it for about an hour. When I took the phone out of the belt clip it was scolding hot. Battery, screen, all of it. I regretfully didn't have something to monitor the temperature to check what it had gotten to, but it was nearing pain just to hold.
Has anyone else been running into overheating problems with their RAZR of this magnitude or does anyone know any cause/solutions? Any input would be appreciated.
Sounds like you had 4g turned on and a lot of activity going on
also sounds like it got hot, i did not "overheat".
My razr gets warm in the case too... Does your case have a magnetic closer thing? Mine does and I am wondering if that is playing a part as I know old motorola droids (Droid 1 ) would not play nice with magnetic cases.
Mine has never been got hot. Not even warm...
But I've heard that many of you are experiencing problems like this so, maybe, it's my device the exception.
P.S.: Always running in HSPA+ with data connected. It got a little warm after 30 minutes of playing on WebTop (on my ATRIX LapDock)
I noticed this today. Went without my otterbox on an after 10 min of listening to pandora the thing was almost to hot to touch. Going to exchange this.

No it does not.
And there were not a lot of activities going on. Up until that point I had made a phone call. That was it. And I checked to see what was active and there wasnt aanything that shouldn't have been.

Mine is XT910 and it is kinda cold even after surfing HSPDA+ for 15mins. The 4G LTE radio in the XT912 aka Droid Razr should be the cause of this issue. I believe they'll roll maintenance updates soon enough to fix this kind of baseband issues.
My device too has been getting hot. I have the Droid Razr. It will overheat with no case, weather i am streaming in 4g or not. constantly losing 4g connection. also once it is over heating it will begin to powercycle. I have also noticed now due to the over heating the kevlar backing now has a huge air bubble underneath it where it has come detached. you can run your finger across hte bottom and just hear the popping sound of it moving around.
Check in Display Settings if In-Pocket detection is ticked. You never know. It is an active process if ticked.
For the past couple days I've noticed when I am in bed I've been using my fiance's EVO 3D charger and it's been heating up the screen pretty good, hot enough to really feel it on your palm of hand, not warm, i'm talking hot. I unplug it, shut it down and within minutes it's cool again.
is this an LTE phone?
I noticed the phone get hot (noticeably hotter than expected) the first day of use when I was hammering LTE and opening/closing things. I didn't use LTE a lot after that. I used the (google) navigator app in the car for a good 11 hours straight and it barely got warm but using 3g.
Since then, I've installed the leaked update which contains a new radio and updates the os to 2.3.6. I've been running 4G and It hasn't been anywhere close to hot. It might get SLIGHTLY warm while downloading/watching some youtube vids but it seems much improved.
No such issues with mine. Scolding hot? You sure you are not exaggerating a little?

Man, Razr has a high voltage battery..... dont ever try to charge it with another phone's charger,,,,
you can charge via laptop.....
My GSM RAZR does get hot, but after about 20 mins of browsing the net + chatting + fb all using 3g....get worried at times...but it goes off. just hoping for my back cover not to bulge, like some has.

Just how 'high' do you think the voltage is on the battery? I have used various chargers and they all work fine.
I had to echange my Razr after 2 weeks because the camera kept freezing but 4-5 times I would feel my pocket get hot. It was very hot and would partially drain the battery quick. Only have 3G in my area. I would reboot it and it would cool down. The new Razr has always stayed cool.
I've had similar problems in the past with my phone randomly becoming extremely hot and the battery dying within a few hours. I eventually downloaded an app called Android System Info on the market. It will tell you exactly what processes are running and how much of the CPU they are using. I found out that a process named android.process.media was starting and hogging 70% or more of my CPU at random intervals. After some research I figured out this was possibly caused by my phone attempting to sync with the media on my micro SD card and failing, but continuously retrying.

Disregard that message as it is ridiculous.
If the Razr couldn't be used with a standard micro-usb charger then they would have put a proprietary charger port on it. And secondly, even the cheapest plug-in charger has far more juice than what a laptop USB port provides.
When I first received my RAZR, it too became very, very hot at times. Uncomfortably hot. To the point where I feared for internal components. On the plus side, some of those 'black blotches' under the screen seemed to disappear.
As above, narrowed it down to the media scanner. Solution was initially to use the phone without an SD card, but that was hardly a long term fix. In the end, I rooted, froze the terrible Blur music app, hid as many folders as possible with .nomedia files, and used the feature of PowerAMP that disables the system media scanner for its database.
Have not had the same problem on 2.3.6 firmware, thankfully.

Can't charge because I am draining too much ;/ Scotty to bridge She got no power left

I drive a VW GTI, I got a bogus speeding ticket (I was going with the flow of traffic!), I was so pist that I went out and bought a Escort Redline (Radar Detector) with the Escort Live app. Essentially my radar detector connects to my phone via blue tooth. I also have my car's stereo has bluetooth (for phone calling) that is also hooked up to my phone via blue tooth. On top of that I also have GPS enabled.
When I plug my car charger, I get a message saying I can't charge my phone because I am using more power then what I am putting back into the phone. Other then the obvious, is there a solution for this problem that allows me to keep this set up without draining the hell out of my battery?
I am using ICS Energy rom (because its awesome!) and the charger is a proprietary device from Escort that plugs into the 12v slot, and the charger has a USB plug in that I just plug my phone into.
I do basic texting and fb, it tells me that as well muchless your setup, lol.
Sounds like the charger is only a 500 mA instead of the 1A you need for the power you're drawing. The stock charger is a 1A

Good god how to you get by! lol! At least yours doesn't drain, I think every 15 minutes kills like 20%. I wouldn't mind if it could just break even, not lose or gain any power.
I'll look into the stock HTC car charger. I really don't want that many wires in my car, I was hoping to use just the one to power the Radar Detector and also my phone. I do have another 12v in the back trunk, I guess I could buy an extension and run it through the floor (under the mat) to the front.
Hey was it just me or was the site offline for like 20 minutes?

Really? Stock? Why is that? Circuit board going bad then? Seems odd that it would say that when your not doing anything. I tried Speed Rom for about a week, it is sooo glitchy ;/
Yeah I notice a lot of the Devs here are pretty young lol. I'm 27, this car is my first buy xD SO! I recommend a radar detector when you buy a buy/own a car, and if it legal, also laser/radar jammers! You will save yourself time and money! NYC probably has that ban as well, since it's practically hardcore like cali is, na, my device is fine, it happened on my first device, but I think it's due to my background apps and screen brightness that uses more power than the charger can push at times.
Your car charger should at least be a 1 amp output. Plug it into the phone and check the Power status. Should be "Charging AC" otherwise it's not 1 amp charger.

Help keeping phone cool during hotspot

Ok, long story shot, I've got a line that still has unlimited data. Right now I'm tired of paying $60 a month for internet. So I've come up with the idea to use my droid razr at a perminate in home hotspot. Thing is, anyone who has done this will know, the phone gets really hot failry fast. It also drains battery, even during chargeing. I'm trying to come up with an idea of how to keep the phone cool, and keep the hotspot up. I'm thinkning of useing a CPU liquid cooling system attached to the battery to help keep it cool. (something like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181032 ). Just wondering if someone has any other ideas, or know if this will work for sure... thanks!!

Its not just the battery that heats up. The CPU temperature increases too along with the power consumption resulting in heating up battery. And If you attache the charger, the effect is multiplied. A cooling unit does sound a good idea but where exactly would you put the heat sink.?
Attaching it to battery will be difficult.
Well, when mine got hot, I placed it in front of the AC unit and it would cool down real quick.

Only problem with the fridge is there is no power to charge the phone and the WiFi drains the battery. Depending on the age of the fridge it might cut down on signal strength.
I was thinking of possibly trying to figure out a way to bypass the battery.. Does anyone know if it'll boot without the battery attached?

Assuming you have a signal of -90 dBm or better all you need is:
Buy a Verizon / Pantech UML290 4G/3G LTE USB Cellular Modem from ebay $20
Buy a Cradelpoint MBR95 wireless router from 3gstore.com $140
Buy a micro sim card adapter $8
Insert sim card from cell!!!
Okk try this.
Get a CPU fan(if u can try a laptop one,its smaller). And a DC adapter..
Attach the fan to the back of the phone.
Place the heat-sink in some coolant (try with ice or frozen gel).
Plug DC adapter and run the fan.
That's as good as I can suggest..

I'm in the same situation and have been using my xt912 for almost a year as my sole hotspot. It doesn't get particularly hot and the battery charge increases while it is on the charger. This was with the latest Verizon OTA update and also currently with CM11 and the Motorola a/c adapter that came with the phone. Could there be something else running that is causing the heat and high battery usage?

I definitely agree with you using tether instead of internet. WOW internet cost me...roughly $60 for a 2mb/s down and 1mb/s up. Now lets not forget that we are talking about megaBITS so that is only 256kb/s down and 128kb/s up, which sucks.. My unlimited data with verizons 4G LTE has gotten me as high has 45mb/s which is freaking nice!!! Anyways onto the original problem.
In the beginning I simply put my phone in front of a fan and that usually kept it pretty cool for a while, but you will learn that at some point you have to turn it off and let it rest. I've also learned that certain tethers on certain roms run better then others. I've had cases that my tether didn't get hot AT ALL which was great! Whereas others burned me to the touch in minutes.
What you can try is using a small power pack that can easily attach to the side of a case or whatnot and rig it to a computer fan, which would significantly decrease the heat since it is in direct content. I had it like that for a while and it was extremely manageable, but not very efficient for taking it out of the house.
Also, I would not recommend putting your phone in the fridge, freezer, A/C unit. I say this because what happens when you bring your nice cold lemonade outside where it's hot. It condensates, which is what can happen if you are not careful of HOW you are actually cooling it down. You do not want a FAST change in temperature, but a steady cooling method. Another example is if you leave anything electronic outside when it's cold, you should wait until the device is room temperature before turning it on since it is so cold, etc etc.
Hope I said something useful. Hope you figure it out!

Random power off issue.

Okay, I am having issues with my Note 3. I can run my phone as hard as i want and no problem until i get to about 50-60%. Then, my phone screen will just go black like the battery just died. Now if i plug it in for 1 second and hit the power button it starts booting up and i can immediately unplug it and it returns to 50-60% battery and continues to run fine. But it will not power up without plugging it in for a second. I even have a friend that is having the same issue with his att&t note 3 that has never been rooted ever. Just weird. I am currently running Vision-x vpucnc5 rom with calm kernal. I have tried multiple other roms and the problem still persist. I have even purchased another battery thinking that was the problem. I will include a screen shot of my battery info screen and all you see is a black line when it happened. Please help! Thanks in advance. .
When you run the device hard, is the phone getting hot? Do you have a big case on it? It sounds like the overheating sensor is kicking off the device. On my note 3, when running WiFi Tether Router app and it is downloading a big file say a movie. On 4g LTE at a download speed of 2MB+ the phone has gotten to hot and shut down. My solution is to take it out of the case when downloading.
Maybe plugging the charger into the device resets the overheating sensor?
Here is what I would do, here is a link to the Galaxy tool app http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../app-one-click-hotspot-enabler-menus-t2816159 download and install. Now you test all the sensors, and check the logcats to see what happened at the black line. Your phone has record of it in the logcats, either in the IOTHIDDENMENU, or SYS_DUMP !!!

Not really sure how to test the temp sensor. It seems from that app that my phone was at about 29 deg Celsius.

There is a free app in the Google play store called the "Cpu Temperature" it gives you CPU temp and Battery temp in C/F. You might install it and run the device hard up to 50-60% and see what your temp is.
Don't forget to scroll through those logcats to see what happened at the black line.
Also I noticed your Screen is using some Battery, what is the preset on display time? Mine is 2 minutes then shuts off, I know if you run the display constantly they get hot.

Mine is set to 1 minute. The cpu temperature seems to stay around 100°F most of the time. However, after a random shutdown I noticed the temp was 140°F while booting it up right after the shutdown. Also. I uprooted and went back to stock NC5 yesterday. Still had the same problem today.

My CPU temp is about 115F with WiFi Tether Router running pretty much all day. My Battery temp is 86F. My device feels cool to the touch, except just under the camera flash where the CPU is. What is your Battery temp at 50-60% ? Maybe you have a short in your Battery that creates excessive temp at the half way discharge point? Do you have access to another Battery to swap out and see if that has any effect?

First of all thanks so much for all your help.
My device feels cool to the touch all the time. Running candy crush seems to make it run at about 120f. Still feels cool to the touch. It happened with the battery that came with the phone so I bought another one thinking that was the problem. Do I buy a third?

No, I think two is enough. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fls4NIRJ1IQ maybe this is the fix.
If not here is Sprint.com's suggestion, here is the link http://support.sprint.com/support/a...expectedly/WTroubleshootingGuide_542_GKB59231

Do you think this looks normal?

NO, anything with Kim Kardashian in it is not normal. Lol As for the device that temp seems a little high, right now I am running 114F CPU and the Battery is 84F. The deivce is running WiFi Tether Router, plus a half dozen other apps, and charging. Let me hunt up the specs on the average operating temp on your CPU.
Hey if you get a chance try this. Go to settings/device/call and uncheck " Turn off screen during calls" the screen will stay on during calls. But if it doesn't go black then its the proximity sensor. It may be defective or may not deactivating because of a case.
