This issue has suddenly appeared. I have tried stock rom (nordic) CM9 and different aosp roms and also different modems, but the problem always returns after half a day or something.
So I can factory reset my phone, make a couple of calls and everythings fine for awhile but then suddenly no one can hear me during calls. I mean there is no sound at all, dont think the mic is turned on. The sound can start to get poor (like im on speaker and far away from the phone) til it doesnt work at all.
I have testet the microphones using voice recorder and taking a video and everything works fine, so i refuse to belive that the mic is faulty. Although its even weirder that the problem still persists after multiple full wipes (format system, cache, data, dalvik) different roms. Probably flashed stock rom with odin 3 times now and the problem is still there. I am now running fully stock non rooted, ive reset the custom binary counter and im ready to send the phone in for repair.
Unless the community can help me out ? any replies are appreciated!

Note that I can still hear the other person but he cant hear me. Switching to speaker and it all works fine ?!?!
What happends when i switch to speaker? does the phone switch microphones aswell? I understand that theres a mic on the top and bottom.

Yes. Regular voice calls use the lower mic, speakerphone uses the top mic. So it sounds like either something is blocking the lower mic, or the lower mic has failed. If you're comfortable opening the phone up yourself, you can try re-seating the rubber housing that is on the lower mic yourself. If not, take it to a service center.
Returned from repair
So guys I received med phone back from repair yesterday and the following parts have been replaced:
Module-RCV+MOT+MIC+E/Jack FPCB (GT_I9100)
ASSY ETC-SUB FPCB (GT_I9100)
And guess what, the problem still persists, my first phone call worked fine, but then the second call failed just like before?!?!!?
Is it possible that there is another hardware fault thats causing this?

Hmm. Maybe the rubber housing on the mic slipped after the first call, and is now blocking the mic. Or the part failed again. Or did you maybe put a case on the phone after the first call?

I was using my old Galaxy s3 to call & txt fiance using viber in states, now that I have sold it to mazuma mobile I have used viber to call her for the first time on my z2 & I could barely hear her at all on the top speaker & had to put phone on speaker phone just to hear her , normal call quality is pretty good on mobile calls, volume was up full. She could barely hear me as well, I turned off noise cancellation in call settings & she could hear me a bit better but said it was still quiet.
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

Have you tried moving the phone around on your ear? Sounds silly, but because of the placement of the speakers, its not as natural as other phones i've used imo (or maybe its how tall the phone is). I found the same issue at first, then i moved the phone around on my ear until the speaker and my ear lined up right and the sound was normal.
Yeah mate, moving the phone around my ear was first thing I tried, I don't have issues with normal calls but speaking to her on viber it's almost like the speaker volume is set really low & I could barely hear her at all, since I call her in the early hours I would rather not have to put the call on speaker phone.

Ah okay. I did a quick google search and it looks like its hit or miss for some devices, so it might be on their end. This thread has a Viber rep responding in it to the same problem, or at least a couple months ago he was(no real solution, other than reporting it).

Also there's an app suggestion in there that a member says helped, and another one would be master volume (i think thats the name). I don't really use Viber, so i'm not much help other than that.
Cheers again for the reply mate, have checked that thread out & also posted in it hoping they will still be checking it, checked the apps mentioned in play store & most haven't been updated since 2011, I do think the issue is like you say more on Viber's end as the volume was fine on my now sold Galaxy S3.
Might have to check out Line or similar apps & get her to do the same as Viber is almost unusable due to this, connection quality was excellent all through the call so I think Viber just need to update or optimise it for the Z2.

Same here, gets annoying having to repeat myself....
This happened to me once in the month that I've owned my G3, though I use in car bluetooth for 80%-ish of calls. Could have been a phone issue or a network blip, I don't have a large enough data set to draw any conclusions.
Yes, we have issues with call quality when using the phone without bluetooth. Callers report that my voice fades in and out / sounds muffled. I've used it in areas with strong and weak signal strength. Therefore ruling out tower issues.
For one G3, I did a factory reset, unchecked Voice Enhancement and Call Privacy in Settings > Call. It seems to help, but did not "fix" the issue.

Did you have a screen protector on? Say tempered glass? Trying to help a friend problem solve a similar complaint.

We have an anti-glare screen protector (the sticky sheets, not tempered glass).
Verizon is replacing the phone with the most issues since the factory reset only temporarily fixed the call issue. Then the calls degraded the rest of the week. We did not receive the replacement yet, so I have no clue as if it is fixed.
As an aside, the other G3 seems to be doing better with calls. It does fade in and out a little but not to the extent as the one being replaced.
I would try a bluetooth headset. The only caveat is I've had issues with the Jawbone Era but not with my car (go figure). The Jawbone also gave me problems with the Galaxy S3, so it may be a bad combo.
If your right handed like me I find when holding the phone I tend to put my pinky finger under the phone, covering the mic. I now am more aware of my placement.

I had this same problem on my G2 and now my wife is reporting it is happening on my G3. I know the problem but I don't really know how to fix it.
There are 2 microphones on the phone. one on the top and one on the bottom. Whenever I angle the phone against my ear too far and the top mic gets covered slightly, that is when my wife reports that I am muffled.
This would also happen when I would hold the phone against my ear with my shoulder to have both hands free. The top mic got covered slightly and she couldn't hear me.
I don't understand why the top mic affects the sound quality so much, but try it out with someone on the phone and cover the top mic. see if it muffles.
If this keeps happening, just make sure that you aren't covering the top mic and you should be fine.
If anyone finds a software fix to better balance the mics I would love to know about it.
Both my wife and I have had our Verizon G3s for about 2 months and have been dealing with this issue.
At first, we thought it might be the fact that we're on a network extender, and that it was only affecting my wife. That's when I realized it was just that I was using bluetooth and that she was not.
Since then, the problem has happened in nearly every call I've made directly using the handset. I never know when it's going to strike, so I've gotten to the point where I almost do not want to use my phone for actual phone calls anymore.
I absolutely dread calling Verizon. They're going to run my through their idiot algorithm of bs and pretend like they've never heard of this problem before.
I've had at least two people tell me they couldn't understand me. If I talk much louder, they've said that they can hear me again.

Yeah... it's completely unacceptable.
I want to understand the problem before I just blindly return the phone. That doesn't seem to have helped others much....

It seems, at least from very early testing, for me it does not fail using BT.
Also, is this only a Verizon problem?

When I hold the phone to my ear with mic by mouth its fine but when I get lazy and pull the mic away from my mouth (30-45 degree angle or so) then they can't hear me too well.

If you have the bluetooth on and it's unconnected, you will have issues with people hearing you. This is after wasting time with Verizon "technical support" for a month. My solution posted on another thread:

If you want to leave the bluetooth on, then use the speakerphone on calls. It works, although not practical in public spaces.

I don't think we're talking about the same issue. My wife and I both have VZW G3s. My bluetooth is on 100% of the time (out of laziness, as I only use it in the car), but hers is off 100% of the time. We both have the same issue with people saying we sound like we're underwater at times.
God... I wish it were that simple, though. I will try it, just for ****z and giggles.

I have actually had the problem using the speaker phone as well but NEVER with a BT headset.
As an update, I called Verizon today (BestBuy Phone) and they went through the usual BS which I played along with. Check settings, signal etc. So finally, they asked me to do a factory reset, which is something I had not done since I have a few corporate applications on the device that are highly secure and difficult to re-install.
I balked but VZ said LG won't even talk to me if I hadn't done that and that they have seen this problem where a hard reset fixed it.
So I'll be a monkey's uncle but so far, so good..... I seriously can't believe this will last...
Phone is 100 percent stock with no other applications added.
I made about 10 calls today and only one complained I sounded tinny. Might have been a bad connection though. Ever other call was crystal clear according to people on the other end.
I also had my wife call me from the phone and talk for 20 minutes while I listened using her iPhone.
Again crystal clear.
Is it fixed?
I don't think it will last but I'm giving it another day before installing my applications one at a time.
I doubt anything I'm using mucks with the phone but you never know.
I'll post back in a day or two.
Ok so I am on day 2 after VZ told me to factory reset and I made 26 calls today and only had one person tell me I sounded garbled. I might have gotten lazy and had the phone on say a 30 degree angle from my ear because re-positioning the phone did fix that one.
The factory reset definitely did fix something because prior to it I was getting complaints from like 2/3 or more of my callers. Now it seems much, much better.
I'm still not convinced it's fixed but I did start installing my applications.
Nothing fancy, waze, facebook, Lotus Travler (work). I want to see how it goes today (Thursday) with these applications installed and see if the problems return.
I'll update tomorrow.
I've had less people say they couldn't hear me but one thing I've started to notice on almost all calls now is I hear a little bit of static when people are talking. I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not. I didn't notice it for the first couple weeks I had the phone.
Since my phone is less than a month old, if I complain and call to get a replacement will they send me a refurb?
Microphone goes silent during call (hardware problem)
Hi guys, I had this problem for a long time, i want to make the story very short. My microphone becomes silent after 1 minute of use. I used the stock voice recorder to check it without the need to call someone. People get annoyed because they can't speak to me. Sometimes the microphone is silent from the very beginning of a conversation. I hear them well but they can't hear me. Once i've changed the mic flex cable/usb port plate and it looked like it worked fine for about a month. Then the problem came back. Could it be the motherboard? Did anyone experience something similar? I had to repair my camera right after buying it second hand. The technician told me the phone was in touch with water after he replaced the back camera.
bump. Just to add, weirdly my speakerphone doesn't work during calls, i don't hear people when its on, and my GPS is useless, it never finds any location. Could it be the motherboard? Pls i need your help.
Im not sure if anyone else is having this issue but whenever i make a phone call the fluctuates. It like moves in waves, i hear them and then it goes quite then i hear them again. This happen on speakerphone, on regular ear piece calls and even via the audio jack. The problem also occurs when i get voice messages. It seems fine someday and then someday calls are almost impossible to hear or voice mail is impossible to hear. I have been having this issue basically since day one and im not sure what is going on. Please any help would be appreciated.
