Gentlemen,
I am going to root my phone monday next week, but want to be sure all my ducks are in a row before I go shooting.
I will be using Revolution to S-Off,
then install busy box and titanium backup.
My understanding is I don't need a radio since I am on 2.3.4, but I do need a kernal?
I am looking into (and this is where you all come in) one of 4 ROMS:
CM7
Liquid Thunderbread
BAMF Forever
BAMF SoaB.
I like sense 3.5, but heard it slowly starts to bog down the system? Anyone else hear that? Whats your opinions on either of those ROMS, and what is the best Kernal for them?
Finally (will I ever stop asking questions?), I know I have to wipe the phone, but does that include the SD card? Should I move as many of the apps off my phone onto the SD card?
Thanks everyone! Wish me luck!
You will enjoy the freedom rooting will grant you.. I know what your going through now, just want to make sure that it is a one time deal and smooth process.
Revolutionary will install busybox during the root process. So no need to do a separate install.
You are correct about the radio your should be fine. Most roms will tell you in the notes if any specific radio is required.
Some roms come with a custom kernel baked in, while others leave the stock kernel alone. You do not need to mess with kernel until your comfortable overclocking and tweaking processor settings.
Roms are all totally up to what you want. I personally love sense 3.5 and have had no issues with the bog down you mentioned. I do not care for AOSP, the few I tried I ended up going back to a sense based rom.
Currently I'm running InfectedRoms Eternity Sense 3.5. Smooth as silk and lightning fast! Eternity includes Ziggy471s Kernel.
I've heard TeamBamf has a good sense 3.5 as well. Never tired so I can not give you any information on that rom.
Your SDcard does not need to be wiped. Everything you have on there is fine where it is. Prior to install of your first rom you will Wipe Data, cache, and dalvik cache. Then install from zip and GO!
Enjoy

I've spent a lot of time on here the last 2 weeks reading as much as possible about flashing. I finally took the plunge and flashed Axura 2.2.6 onto my Vibrant, and I love it.
Now, I am intrigued by the new Bionix-V ROM out, but I am not sure I understand everything I need to do if I want to change ROMs. Also, I have a few questions I can't seem to get a grasp on.
1. Before flashing or anything, I rooted with Ryan's OCLF. When I flashed with Axura, did that install and enable voodoo on my phone? Did it override OCLF? I know you are not supposed to be running both.
2. I cannot figure out this kernel thing. Do I just let the ROMs handle them, or am I supposed to be updating on my own?
3. I don't do anything with the modem (e.g., KA7), correct? As I understand it, the ROMs are based off of this.
4. I have read some stuff recently about how Titanium Backup has caused some issues. Should it not be used when going from ROM to ROM?
5. I have read some stuff recently about the battery and cycling it. Should this be done if I want to change ROMs?
Thanks in advance.

ok..
1. I dont know if Axura had Voodoo....but if you flash a custom ROM (weather its Axura, Bionix-V..etc..) it'll always be rooted
2. Some folks (like me) prefer going back to stock 2.1 with Odin...then flashing their new custom ROM...so they dont run into ghost files and kernel issues...but its not needed....some times you can go from ROM to ROM
3. the KA7 is the newest leak from Samsung for our phones....when a custom ROM is made...it is made from the newest leak...which now is KA7..this way the ROMs stay up to date
4. Titanium Backup is a great tool...almost a must use tool if you're going from ROM to ROM....Titanium Backup Pro is a lot more speedier and has more features that the free version...but the free one is also good
5. I personally make sure my batt is fully charged and is plugged in while i'm flashing so it reduces the time i have to re-condition...you should read a little bit more on that

It sounds like you just rooted with OCLF, no issue there. OCLF lag fix converts your file system to EXT2, voodoo is EXT4. If you heard Linda (lady's voice) at first bootup, your system is EXT4 via voodoo. You can download voodoo toggle from the market to verify it is working, and to disable (which you would do if you flash something that is NOT voodoo). Also, it is not possible to run both.... file system is one or the other. EXT4 is better (even though EXT2 will show a higher quad score).
2. I cannot figure out this kernel thing. Do I just let the ROMs handle them, or am I supposed to be updating on my own?
The ROM will handle this. You only need to flash another one if you really want to..
3. I don't do anything with the modem (e.g., KA7), correct? As I understand it, the ROMs are based off of this.
The ROM will handle this. You only need to flash another one if you really want to, ie, you have better signal with one vs the one included in your rom.
4. I have read some stuff recently about how Titanium Backup has caused some issues. Should it not be used when going from ROM to ROM?
Ignorance causes issues, not Titanium Backup. Check the noob guide in my signature to learn how to use it properly.
5. I have read some stuff recently about the battery and cycling it. Should this be done if I want to change ROMs?
Always. Also in the noob guide.
Thanks
Thanks. You guys rock.
Quick question/comment. When I used OCLF, I know that I rooted and I also ran the lagfix, because my quadrant score went up drastically. Not sure if this matters.
I went into Astro, and I have a folder for voodoo with log files in it, so this means I must have voodoo, right?
I downloaded the voodoo toggle, but I don't see it anywhere on my phone. Does it only show as a setting somewhere?
Voodoo toggle = Reboot Button (no clue why the dev did this). App works great though.
The post containing MIUI fascinatemtd was kind of confusing. Can anyone clarify what items on this rom are not working. I want to flash it but it appears to be a pain to flash back from an MTD rom.
Also I am going from Evilfascination 3.6. Do I need to disable voodoo? or can I just wipe everything and flash like normal?
your question is clearly answered in the the 1st sticky in the dev section. Imo any gingerbread based rom right now has bugs...so i wouldnt classify them as a good daily rom. Not much can be done until the actual gb source code is released.
What items are not working? And regarding the sticky all I could find was info on going from MTD to ext4. Not going from a voodoo TW rom to an MTD rom.
I used MIUI on both my phone, and my wifes phone for quite a while. No problems out of it. The most stable version is still the 7-22 version.
Going back from the MTD rom really just means you need the PIT file when you odin another ROM, no big deal at all.
I prefer the MIUI launcher, but I am trying out JTs VGB 8-16, so far no problems, and seems a bit faster than MIUI.
Any special requirements when flashing an MTD rom for the first time?
Nevermind. I got it installed. Thank you for the responses.
Warning
Warning gingerbread roms are known for causing sd card problems. I ran Jt's vanilla gb for the week and had four crashes. Decided to wait as each time I had to Odin back to stock and start over. But a friendliy F.Y.I. if you don't really understand what to except.

This is the exact reason why I did not recomend this rom... or any gb based rom for that matter.
Big Fan of MIUI, it seems to only work on older MicroSD cards, my MicroSDHC was not read by MIUI. If you can deal with low storage options, you can go with it. When I ran it, it never read my 32GB SDHC card, causing me to go back to TW until this is fixed, hopefully soon.
from what ive I've read it is mostly the Tw leak based roms that have the SD card issue. This one is aosp based. I actually flashed it a couple hours ago and I have to tell you I'm glad I took the risk! This is not just a rom. Everything is redone. They everything works is different. I see no traces of original android anywhere. All of the menus, apps, notifications are beautiful! Everything in this rom uses hardware acceleration so it is as smooth as the iphone! This rom is Amazing!

Hi,
I'm currently charging my new SGS II, and considering what to do with it when I power it of. I have had a lot of cutom roms and mods on my HTC Desire previously Now, I know I don't want an AOSP ROM right away, I want to try out the phone how way it was "meant to be".
But I want the bells and whistles also though, like root, and any other stuff that makes the phone better, and I assume some of you here has some suggestions. I read through a decent amount of threads yesterday but I don't have a firm grasp of everything.
1: Is it much to gain from switching to a custom kernel battery-wise or performance wise? Or should I just run "stock" with zergRush?
2: Are there any cooked ROM base on Samsung softwae that exceed the stock ROMs in usefull functionality, while still being perfectly stable? Or are the stock rom great/good on it's own?
3: What kind of backups should I make before I start, to be as sure as possible of avoiding a certain brick? I run linux, so I can't run Odin, but I can run Heimdall and I guess I can make pretty much the same backups from there. As far as I have gathered, the S II have a few special quirks regarding partitions and some other low-level info. Is installing CWM and then do a backup "good enough" or is there something else that should be done - or should it be done before I even install CWM?
To answer your questions:
1. Yes custom kernels do make a difference- performance and battery wise. Currently, in my opinion, siyah and speedmod are two of the better kernels out there. Also the different governors in the kernels help you decided what balance between performance and battery life you want.
This thread explains everything about governors- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369817&highlight=simple+clean
2. As good Sammy Roms go, I'd recommend you try CheckRom & Hyperdoid. Other Roms I'd recommend if you're looking for stability are Simple & Clean and Cognition. MIUI is good too(I'm currently on it) and quite stable.
3. If you don't have CWM recovery and have root, use Titanium backup to backup all your apps and MyBackup Root to backup the rest of the misc data. If and when you do have CWM recovery, just make a nandroid backup so you can freely try out new roms and restore through nandroid if anything happens.
If there's anything I've missed lemme know

If anything I've said helps, feel free to hit the thanks button!!
I simply installed CF Root which include CWM, and made a backup from there. (Which I then move to the external sd card, where I believe it should be en the first place. Not much help having a backup on internal storage if you mess up your artitions/nand.
It gives me a great chance to try the phone pretty stock for a while. Although I'm very little impressed by the Samsung "extras" so far, which seems to be limited to a few not-so-useful apps and a pretty crappy launcher. Samsung dive is the only thin with any value that I have discovered so far.
Its full of guides.
Also backup your EFS with ktool from the market asap.
I prefer speedmod Kernel
I did backup from CWM and take a copy to my laptop
Personally... like you I wanted to see the phone how it is made - at first
I then zerg rushed my phone simply to gain root - REALLY SIMPLE
If your still using touchwiz.... i recommend appzorter (basically organises apps)
You can chose go launcher etc if you prefer more customisation!
Then after two weeks a developer who's work I previously used for my desire came back to xda... his work was always great on desire... so i fully rooted with ODIN
yet again it was really easy, follow the guides to a t and your set!
I popped his rom on (in my sig) and never looked back since!
If you do decide to go down the custom rom route, start with a 2.3.6 build instead of trying ICS 4.0 etc... stick to solid and STABLE builds until you have more knowledge!
Enjoy
Hey all,
Got my HTC One last week, been loving it. Previously I had a SGS3 I9300, and am happy I moved away from Samsung on this generation, for sure. Since I began flashing ROM's and kernels to my SGS3, I was looking for a way to clean up the internal SD card. The solution I found was an Aroma-powered script called Megawipe by zoot1. It worked great, removing all folders and crap from the internal sd card that doing a 'factory' reset won't accomplish... Free'd up 3.7 additional GB's.
Anyway, I was wondering, because I plan on flashing ROM's for the HTC One as they start rolling out, if there was a similar tool/script that accomplished the same thing? If not, could his script be modified to accomplish a similar goal? Any ideas or alternatives would be greatly appreciated, just trying to think ahead for scripts I'm sure people will value. Thanks again guys.
its all the same. superwipe/megawipe is just one app that wipes everything you need if your flashing a new rom. just do a factory reset flash and wipe cache and dalvik and its the exact same thing. and pretty much every custom rom out there now based on AROMA has a built in function to wipe for you if you came from a different rom.
There are plenty of roms and kernels you can flash over on the international ONE forum section. I'm running ordroid 4.2.0 with se7en kernel from there. They have already rebased all their roms on the 1.29 and have intergrated TMO wifi calling and icons into their setups so it should basically feel like stock TMO rom without the bloat lols.
Thanks for the info. It is the same, appears to do the same as CWM / Advanced / Format /data (last option). Thanks again.
OK, first a bit of backstory: my i9100 was the first smartphone I ever owned. With the help of XDA, I quickly went from "n00b" to "advanced n00b", mainly just theming and tweaking things to my liking. I'm no graphics designer, but I was proud of some of the things I was able to do, especially considering I had absolutely no experience with these kinds of things when I started out. You know, exactly the kind of thing that makes both Android and XDA awesome. Eventually, though, life got more hectic and I had no spare time to dedicate to theming my phone. Also, I decided I wanted to try out AOSP roms, which I ended up loving. Now, my S2 is the backup for my backup phone, functioning mostly as an alarm clock.
With that out of the way, here's my problem. Because I don't actually need this phone to be particularly functional, I'd like to revert my device to what it was before, running WanamLite 12.5 with my themed apk's flashed over it, just for nostalgia. Unfortunately, my CWM backup got lost over the years, it was probably on an SD card that I swapped over to one of my other phones and accidentally got deleted. The WanamLite zip, along with my theme's zip and even the SpeedMod kernel zip I was using are all still on my internal sd, untouched for years. The rom and kernel flash without any issues, the problem is when I try to flash the theme zip, I get "E:Can't open /sdcard/Download/filename.zip (bad)" and the install stops. All the other zips that have been sitting there just as long flash perfectly, so I don't see why that one alone would be corrupted. SuperSU and BusyBox are both installed correctly, and I don't recall ever having to do anything special before when I flashed my zip over the installed rom.
I know this is a long, long shot, but if anyone has any ideas or workarounds I would love to hear them! Thanks!
