MIUI any good as a daily driver? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The post containing MIUI fascinatemtd was kind of confusing. Can anyone clarify what items on this rom are not working. I want to flash it but it appears to be a pain to flash back from an MTD rom.

Also I am going from Evilfascination 3.6. Do I need to disable voodoo? or can I just wipe everything and flash like normal?

your question is clearly answered in the the 1st sticky in the dev section. Imo any gingerbread based rom right now has bugs...so i wouldnt classify them as a good daily rom. Not much can be done until the actual gb source code is released.

What items are not working? And regarding the sticky all I could find was info on going from MTD to ext4. Not going from a voodoo TW rom to an MTD rom.

I used MIUI on both my phone, and my wifes phone for quite a while. No problems out of it. The most stable version is still the 7-22 version.
Going back from the MTD rom really just means you need the PIT file when you odin another ROM, no big deal at all.
I prefer the MIUI launcher, but I am trying out JTs VGB 8-16, so far no problems, and seems a bit faster than MIUI.

Any special requirements when flashing an MTD rom for the first time?

Nevermind. I got it installed. Thank you for the responses.

Warning
Warning gingerbread roms are known for causing sd card problems. I ran Jt's vanilla gb for the week and had four crashes. Decided to wait as each time I had to Odin back to stock and start over. But a friendliy F.Y.I. if you don't really understand what to except.

This is the exact reason why I did not recomend this rom... or any gb based rom for that matter.

Big Fan of MIUI, it seems to only work on older MicroSD cards, my MicroSDHC was not read by MIUI. If you can deal with low storage options, you can go with it. When I ran it, it never read my 32GB SDHC card, causing me to go back to TW until this is fixed, hopefully soon.

from what ive I've read it is mostly the Tw leak based roms that have the SD card issue. This one is aosp based. I actually flashed it a couple hours ago and I have to tell you I'm glad I took the risk! This is not just a rom. Everything is redone. They everything works is different. I see no traces of original android anywhere. All of the menus, apps, notifications are beautiful! Everything in this rom uses hardware acceleration so it is as smooth as the iphone! This rom is Amazing!

The Advantages of Froyo roms

I've been using KaosFroyo, but I am wondering what advantages the other roms may have over this one. I read somewhere that one of them has Flash 10 working, but I do not believe it.
And does anyone have any idea on the progress being made on a Froyo with Sense Rom. I seen Kaos said he was looking into it. I really like using a Froyo rom, but I do need sense since it has Flash Light built into it. My reason for needing flash light has nothing to do with videos or games, but is a real necessity.
Please leave smart comments and jerks out of this forum. Answers and things that will truly contribute to the discussion and be able to educate.
The question you need to ask yourself before you ask this question, is what do you need that KaosFroyo doesn't do, besides flash, which isn't supported with our chipset.
..
It's not about what KaosFroyo isn't doing, it's more about if the other roms do those things better. The other thing I would like to know is what separates the various versions of Froyo apart from each other.
And Flash Lite is supported by the Eris(it comes with the phone), but you need Sense.
i personally like CELB froyo because its very stable and seems faster then the other ones

Fair enough, but that's a pretty loaded question.
You don't need flashlite for KaosFroyo, just use SkyFire, enables flash video on several sites. Same limitations as Flashlite/Sense basically.
oh and i also like to run nonsensikal sometimes just because of the themed versions he made with it. theyre both pretty nice

Not totally correct. While SkyFire does solve the video issues, my college is online and I have to access their website. Their site requires Flash. Flash Lite was good enough to access their site. SkyFire does not solve that problem. That problem will exist until there is a Sense based Froyo Rom.
I really just want to know what separates the Froyo roms apart from each other though. As with 2.1 roms, it all depends on one's preference on what one uses. I just wish that I could use the same sd card for both 2.1 and 2.2 so I could go back and forth between roms without either changing sd cards or formatting them everytime.

You don't have to change sd cards just make a nandroid backup of your 2.2 than flash what 2.1 rom you want after wiping data/factory and dalvik and set it up and make another nand backup of your 2.1 and restore ba k and forth. I tmrun kaos frayo and e dry great while ill restore a nand of darch vanilla 2.1 and mess with it than go right ba k to frayo

would I be able to save data on it from other things if I do that. I have a backup of both Ivans and KaosFroyo on mine, but I can't save regular data when I go back and forth. for the time being, I copied all the data that I use when using Ivan;s over to my computer and formatted sd card to save data, and use apps2sd with froyo.
I don't know if its a conspiracy or not, but I think Google set it up differently to increase sd card sales, lol
I also flash back and forth between 2.1 and 2.2 frequently (Senseable and KaosFroyo) without changing our modifying my SD card. I have noticed no problems, but I don't use apps2sd on 2.1.
As far as flash 10.1 on the Eris not being supported, I don't see why it can't be done on Froyo, since it's already working on 2.1. It's a little slow but it's pretty good.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App + Swype.
when I first installed KaosFroyo, it wouldn't recognize my sd card. so i had to take all my saved items off the sd card and put on my computer and reformat my sd card. but I have not went back to 2.1 since I went KaosFroyo, but Im about to, so we'll see how it works out for me.

If you use Apps2SD with a 2.1 ROM, you can't just throw on a Froyo ROM. Froyo doesn't like the formatting of the SD card when it's partitioned. I am now stuck on Sense 2.1 (I used to switch back to Froyo 2.2 for the weekends, but without a second SD card, that's relaly inefficient). Froyo, if you restore an old nand backup, tells you you have to format your SD card.

well I never used apps2sd when I used 2.1 roms. I went from Ivan's 1.0 I think it was to KaosFroyo and when I did, it wouldn't recognize my SD card. I'm not sure if when I go back if it will recognize the card, or if I will need to format it again.
the reason I put it in this section and not the q&a since it involves custom roms and I figured that the q&a would be for more basic questions that people who do not root their phone would use compared to the rooting crowd.
I would like to say I am very lucky to be able to root, since my original Eris got stolen out of my locker at work when they broke the lock off my locker. My replacement had a version of the bootloader(1.49 or something like that) which wasn't supposed to be rootable. I used that method where you can root without a computer to get the job done. I'm still upset that the insurance company didn't send me the SD card with my replacement(had to go purchase another one) and sent me the wrong case(would be fine if I wanted my Eris to hang from my belt, but I had a silicon gel and I can barely get the phone out of the replacement case to use.)

Thanks for this answer. Even more thanks for not trying to belittle me in the process. When I went from ivans 1.0 to kayosfroyo 29, i had to format my sd card. because of that I assumed that I would have to reformat when I went back to Ivan's. I assumed wrong because when I went back to Ivan's, I did not need to format.
I think the solution to my problem is to use KaosFroyo for regular use, then when I have to access my college material, do a nandroid restore back to Ivan's since it has flash light.

[Q] I'm A Noob, It's been 8 Months I Need Some Direction?

So, it's been about 8 months since I rooted my phone and I'm startin to want to learn more...
I rooted my phone and installed xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 ROM and I've spent the past 14 hours today, reading here and androidforums seein what options I've got now. I'm debating upgrading to the newer xtrSENSE...but I'd like to learn to customize/theme everything as much as possible, so I'm not sure if that's the right option for me?
I'm looking for some direction on things, what ROM would you guys recommend moving to, I LOVE my current ones performance.
My only internet access is through my phone, I'm using wireless teather to type this now, so errors are no option for me, saddly.
I only use the basics of my phone, calls, text/mms, camera, internet, youtube, music player so less is more for me...out of the 7 screens, I barely qualify for using 3, I play most of the Storm8 games, but other than that, don't use much of the stock apps and would like to rid of as many as possible...if possible
I see now, that we've got an option for an improved boot without trackball required, which sounds like something that I should install, just as a precautionary to be on the safe side of things...
I've been reading the "How to theme" threads but I get kinda lost, even in the super noob easy ones...I'm feeling lost as to what I should do, I need step by step with visual...I feel re tarded!
i have become quite fond of the cm7 roms. they run fast and smooth. they all (i think, i know tazz and shed) have wireless tether working. you will lose sense with any cm7 though. themeing in cm7 is made especially easy in cm7 through t-mobiles theme engine. all you do is download and install a theme from the market, run the tmobile theme program, select the theme, and reboot. if you decide to go with a different rom, most themes are through metamorph which there should be several threads on. the froyo roims are also very stable. however, tazz's froyo with sense is the most complete sense on 2.2 and it is missing the camera and bluetooth audio. i saw you use the camera and so 2.2 sense may not be an option for you. it does have wireless tether though. if you like sense then a 2.1 like xtrsense is the way to go. the themes section should have all the information you need to get you up and theming. the only caution is to make sure the theme you select/apply is designed for your rom. amon ra recovery is usually the best way to go especially if you do not routinely check md5sums. the trackball usually starts to scroll left before failing, so unless you have that issue already, you probably do not need the trackballless recovery. however, as you suggested it is often better to be safe now then sorry later, i would pick an amon ra needing trackball over a clockwork without trackball since amon ra checks file integrity before flashing to try to avoid bricking you phone.
Thanks for the insight, yeah, I'm runnin xtrSENSE right now, it's what I flashed 8 months ago and have left it, there's a new version now, I started thinking though, maybe I should try somethin else, and something that I can theme.
I'm a minimalist which is why I was thinking maybe a NON-SENSE might be better suited for me. From what I understand, the SENSE ROMs are harder to theme and the CyanogenMod ROMs are probably going to be more what I'm looking for, since they're suppose to be easier to theme?
I'm kinda lookin for opinions and basics of things to get started learning some more customization skills. I'm also a windows guy and am lacking knowledge in MAC and Linux, which is seemingly where Andriod is based.

Vanilla ROMs and CM ROMs are definately easier to theme than Sense ROMs. Here's a good thread you can look through if you want to learn more. This is where I learned a lot.

What's a good day to day, stable Vanilla or CM ROM? Are those all AOSP? or just the CM's? Maybe I'll just have to flash'em until I find one I like, then go from there with learning Themeing
if you are looking for a cm7 rom, i am currently using gingershedbread 1.6 although i have also used tazz's and it works equally as well. i had been using froyoshedyo previously as it is a very stable 2.3 cm6.2.

I've downloaded both tenzomonks Vanilla 2.0.4. and Worksheds GSBv1.6 I'll have to check each of'em out Was gonna DL Tazz Froyos GB too and compare the three.
As for icons and what not, I know there's packages and theme zips you can download and pull images/icons and things from those, but can you pull from ROM's themselves? Without installing to the phone?

Yes. Just open the zip and go through and find what you want. A lot of the icon's could be located within apk files which can be opened with 7zip or winrar. If they are theme icons then they might be located elsewhere. Just browse around until you find what you want lol That's what I did.
Well...I've got fewer than 10 posts so I'm stuck postin this question here rather than in the Vanilla ROM thread...
I flashed the Vanilla 2.0.4. ROM succesfully to my phone, but when doing a wipe, the Wipe SD:ext partition failed, I tried twice, failed both times, proceeded to install the ROM and everything went fine, I'm just wondering if that's going to cause any problems in the future?
I'm also wondering if I can totally format my SDcard and have a fresh phone, I've got everything backed up on the computer so I wouldn't think it'd be a big deal if an error occured, I could just put everything back on via backup on computer, right? Mabye, delete one at a time on the sd? Just would like to clean up a bit

i'm not to familiar with tenzomonk's rom. most roms do not require you to wipe the sd card unless you need to change the partitions on it. however, i am not sure why your wipe of the sd card failed. if you are running windows, you can boot to recovery, mount sd card in recovery (very easy if you are running amons), when it shows up in your drive list, right click and format. then copy your flashable rom file to your sd card, unmount, rewipe data, reflash.

Did you put an ext2 or ext3 partition on to your SD card? In other words, your SD card is normally a single FAT32 partition. Amon's Recovery gives you the option to create an ext2 partition and a swap partition - generally for apps2sd on 2.1 ROMs for the Eris - and also a way to convert that ext2 partition to ext3.
Wipe:ext will wipe an ext2 or ext3 partition on your SD card if you have one. It will not wipe the normal FAT32 partition on the SD card.
If you did not create an ext2 or ext3 partition on your SD card, then wipe:ext does nothing.
Yeah, I've never done anything to the SD so I'm assuming it's FAT32 and that's why it failed then, thanks, now I know why.
I've been trying to change the keyboard on this ROM with no luck, in the Vanilla ROM thread, there's a link to an HTC_IME.apk for the sense style keyboard, but when I installed those, nothing happend, I followed all instructions for setting up, using EStrong to install, then switching from android keyboard to multi-touch and the first install, the milti-touch wouldn't pop up, then I uninstalled/reinstalled and it "works" but the only difference between the two is the background color, milti is grey, droid is black...
I've got a few other things I'm wanting to change but I can't post in the Vanilla thread yet so I thank you guys for all your support and suggestions in this thread thus far
One other thing now too, I forgot to mention, I've only messed with this keyboard change and I've installed Dolphin browser, and it pops up saying storage space is low, yet under phone storage sdcard, it says available space is 6.17gb out of 7.39gb and phone storage is 139mb

This is a nifty keyboard solution i found. It is an online kitchen that lets you make your own custom keyboard. Does it give you the "low space" notification in the status bar? If so, when you go to menu->settings->storage "internal storage" What is listed as your available space? Is that where you see the 139mb free? Could be a rom issue? With GingerShedBreaad 1.7 and about 50 apps installed, I have 67mb free and never get the status bar "low space" notification.

[Q] Going to Root, any last tips?

Gentlemen,
I am going to root my phone monday next week, but want to be sure all my ducks are in a row before I go shooting.
I will be using Revolution to S-Off,
then install busy box and titanium backup.
My understanding is I don't need a radio since I am on 2.3.4, but I do need a kernal?
I am looking into (and this is where you all come in) one of 4 ROMS:
CM7
Liquid Thunderbread
BAMF Forever
BAMF SoaB.
I like sense 3.5, but heard it slowly starts to bog down the system? Anyone else hear that? Whats your opinions on either of those ROMS, and what is the best Kernal for them?
Finally (will I ever stop asking questions?), I know I have to wipe the phone, but does that include the SD card? Should I move as many of the apps off my phone onto the SD card?
Thanks everyone! Wish me luck!
You will enjoy the freedom rooting will grant you.. I know what your going through now, just want to make sure that it is a one time deal and smooth process.
Revolutionary will install busybox during the root process. So no need to do a separate install.
You are correct about the radio your should be fine. Most roms will tell you in the notes if any specific radio is required.
Some roms come with a custom kernel baked in, while others leave the stock kernel alone. You do not need to mess with kernel until your comfortable overclocking and tweaking processor settings.
Roms are all totally up to what you want. I personally love sense 3.5 and have had no issues with the bog down you mentioned. I do not care for AOSP, the few I tried I ended up going back to a sense based rom.
Currently I'm running InfectedRoms Eternity Sense 3.5. Smooth as silk and lightning fast! Eternity includes Ziggy471s Kernel.
I've heard TeamBamf has a good sense 3.5 as well. Never tired so I can not give you any information on that rom.
Your SDcard does not need to be wiped. Everything you have on there is fine where it is. Prior to install of your first rom you will Wipe Data, cache, and dalvik cache. Then install from zip and GO!
Enjoy

[Q] Possesed Nook Tablet

Hello I hope someone can help me with this. I rooted my daughter's Nook tablet with OS version 1.4.3 and put CM7 on there. Here is the link to the page I followed to do this, I used everything on there, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037368
Every once in a while the thing goes crazy and just opens things up on its own. It won't follow any of the buttons pushed or even when I tried to power off it took a long time for it to react. Any ideas or suggestion would be very helpful she's going back to college later today and would like this fixed before she leaves.
Thanks

That may be it, her battery was very low. Thanks for the info.
I'd suggest upgrading to CM10 next time you have her NT for a couple of days. CM7 for the NT got superseded by CM9 and CM10 well before its development got mature enough, its Android base (Gingerbread) is also ~2-year old and many new apps would not be backward compatible with it.
The easiest/quickest way to get on CM10 is to run it off an SDcard using a pre-made image from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/. You can buy a 8GB class 4 microSD (Sandisk is best) for about $6 on ebay, burn the CM10 image and just mail it to your daughter to put it in and boot it up.
If you want to build the CM10 SDcard from scratch (for more customization) you can use the process described at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35786747&postcount=1, but you'll need to use the NT to "build" the card.
Just an FYI stock nook untouched freaks out with low battery as well. It isn't ROM related.
Sent from my CM 10 nook tablet. Thanks devs!
Is there anyway to keep the data already on my external memory? Or is it going to get wiped out? I plan on backing up my card anyway, but I'd rather avoid having to move everyback after I'm done. Thanks for the help.

1st thing i thought it was a known issue that gingerbread doesnt work well with NT's. and that there were always huge bugs when it is installed.
2nd thing u shud def update to newer cm10.2 stable with bexus-n kernel. works well even without kernel.just runs faster and saves more energy and charges faster.
3rd u should ALWAYS wipe data first especially if ur installing different android versions (exp: gingerbread to jellybean and such). even going from stock nook to a rom u shud wipe.....chance of leaving residual data from past rom might brick it or mess up the internal partitions. then ur in for a long drawn out recovery process. good luck :good:

If you aim to run rooted stock ROM, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=240.
If you aim to install custom ROM such as CM10.x internally on emmc, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...71&postcount=1.
See also http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=31 for more background info on rooting & flashing custom ROMs.

Request for CM7 Rom for EMMC (internal) boot

Hi guys,
I've been running a few ICS and JB roms lately on my NT, but I can't seem to be able to get more than 4h of use out of it (video, music, reading etc). On CM7/stock, I used to be able to get 7-8h out it (especially reading stuff), with no sync or wifi turned on. At this stage I would like to request, if possible, a CM7 build or anything based on 2.3, that is flashable to EMMC with recovery builtin.
I have been trying some of the roms from iamafanof.wordpress.com and pretty much all CM7 NT builds on XDA, but they're all for SD boot, which in my opinion is suffering from performance issues (undestandable, considering it's running from a microSD card) and it's not practical at all.
I'm prepared to throw in a donation as well, just let me know please. I would like to get more use out if it, it's meant to do better than what JB/ICS roms are offering at the moment.
Please don't take this as offensive or anything, I didn't mean that at all, it's just my opinion and I strongly believe that the whole Nook Tablet community would benefit from having a CM7 build, flashable to internal memory.
Thanks in advance guys.

Yep, as i suspected this build bicked my NT, so I had to go through the whole lot... stock, rooting and getting CM10 back...
So NO, this is not for internal flashing.
Anything else?

The ROM was clearly labeled by its builder CelticWebSolutions as for "Internal". Which version of Recovery did you use to flash it? To flash CM7 you need CWM 5.5.x, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958.
The only other CM7 build I am aware of is Succulent's at http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/how-to-guide-bootable-cm7cm9cm10-sdcard-for-nook-tablet/.
