Need Advice-Have a chance to buy a Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I possibly, have a chance to buy a Prime tomorrow. It's very possible someone else might buy it before me because I won't have the $ until later morning. Got emailed the pics of it. The seller says to email him when I get the cash.
Of course, I hope that the seller waits for me or that no one gets it before I do. I am concerned about Wifi and I can't return it if it was defective! I would turn it on and test it thoroughly before giving cash.
I doubt that I will get it before another quicker buyer but, Would you girls and guys go for it?
Edit GOT IT!!!
I just downloaded the new software update thingy. Interestingly, Wifi seems to have improved BUT, I will test it some more. Looks good though.
Also, I have a crap cellphone the Samsung intercept, so the videowas atrocious but hopefully, I can upload it from this Prime. The pics are low quality too but will post later!
Gorgeous, super tablet I must say. Very fast. Im sad that my Prime is missing the S hadowgun and Bladeslinger demos! Andy , could go u upload them or where can I get them. The price of getting it early lol! Riptide is amazing!! The water effects!!!! Wow!
Very happy I got it, definitely worth, even with th e wifi issue. Sorry not used to typing on my Prime obviously lol!
I am sorry that I had my private messages off, if anyone wants to PM me, by all means do so. Pics later!

Ya do it. I doubt they actually changed anything in their production to "fix" the wifi "issue". No warranty does suck though... But hell, who knows how long some of us might have to wait for this thing, I'd jump on it if I had the chance!

I'd make sure you get the original receipt for it so if it needs to be exchanged or needs warranty work you're covered. Other than that, assuming you're OK with what you'll be paying for it, go for it.
P.S. - Do the exchange in a restaurant and get there first. Meeting strangers that know you'll have cash with you is something to be wary of.

Do you know where this person got their Prime from? Is it covered by warranty?
If it is not under warranty then I don't think it is worth it cause if it is defective or it becomes defective then you are screwed.

The seller says he obtained it from through a promotion last week at a technology media event in New York. Lucky man.
It's not from a store, so no receipt. I will ask if he has a paper with it. It's a USA Prime, so warranty by Asus

Good advice because I'm going long distance to a big city. I definitely am meeting in a public restaurant IF I even get the thing

Just my 2¢ on the issue: Don't worry about the warranty. Since it's a brand new product, you don't have to prove when you bought it. I sent in my Transformer multiple times to ASUS directly for service, and they never questioned when/where I purchased it...
There are others who will disagree, and of course, everyone's entitled to my opinions

If it was me...
I would only buy it if the box is still sealed. That's just me though, for my own peace of mind. Goodluck and keep us posted.

My point exactly, since you are getting the device right after it's released (before its released actually), so even if they count it to the day it was released you'd still get 1 full year of warranty.

I personally would not do it. It's just like people who charge close to retail for their used Ipads. If I'm paying close to retail, I may as just well purchase it for the retail price so I can have the peace of mind of going back to the store if anything goes wrong. Don't forget that since it's the holidays, most stores have extended return periods. Also, I know we all are eager to get the new prime but 1 or 2 months from now, if you are having problems with the unit, you have to ask yourself was it worth it to buy it a week early or would it have been better to wait a week and have your own receipt and the ability to return it to the store if you needed to.

You could also buy one at a B&M reseller once they're more widely available and return it. Keep the original receipt and return it with a photocopy or do it at BB where they can track the transaction by CC number and you don't need a receipt for returns. Use that to send in should it need repair. And for those with a higher moral standard then mine, it's bending the rules not breaking them.

I didn't get mine from a B&M, so I'm not sure how popular it is, but I know with game consoles etc., most places have the SN on the receipt...

Good point. I know Costco doesn't. GameStop's not too sophisticated so they may not. I'm not sure about Target and Walmart. BB probably does.

I guess nobody else is curious or maybe they are just classier than me but how much ya payin for it? Good luck too by the way.

He's asking $600 for the 32GB Amethyst Grey. I know it's $100 over retail. Would I be totally stupid? My pre-order was cancelled by Amazon and don't see how I will get one this month if another buyer gets to the overpriced promo Prime first, but who knows.

Honestly, I would pay that right now. After tax and shipping that's what it would cost anyway. My preorder at GS was $544. Go for it. Even if you can handle yourself, take somebody with you for added security anyway. I don't know what it's like in NJ but I'm in Texas and I think I would have a heater in the truck.

I wouldn't do it especially for that price unless you absolutely need to have it now. Then again, I know how it feels to want something so bad that you are willing to pay over MSRP for it. You have to ask yourself, is it worth it to pay a $100 markup on something that may be on shelves in a week. Even if it's released next month, you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to pay more for something that you can't freely return in any store since he isn't giving you a receipt. If you have the money and you need it that bad, then pull the trigger. This thread reminds me of when I paid $750 for the Nokia n95 before it hit stateside. Never again my friend, never again.

Just to reiterate it's not really a $100 markup if you have to pay tax and have it shipped. $544 with tax in Tejas. Add shipping and its much closer to 6 hundo. Plus, waiting an extra month or two is not worth saving $50 - $100; to me anyway.

I would pay for it because at gamestop with overnight shipping charges, mine comes out to $554, but thats just me.

He would get much more on eBay for it. Grab the chance while you have it.

Best Buy TP Exchange Experience...

Got my TP yesterday from Best Buy, and unfortunately it had few issues, biggest being that the left side was separating (you could see the glass move and could hear a click when squeezing it....) Needless to say I was not going to keep it, so I figured I will give a local Best Buy a try to see if I can exchange it...
I walked up to the Customer Service desk and explained the problem. They said no problem, just go to the computer area and get another one, and they will do an exchange. Went back there, and asked for a Transformer Prime. Got a blank stare, then was told that they are not out yet. I proceeded to explain that I already have one and I'm just exchanging it. Another blank stare, then I was assured that what I must have is the Transformer. I finally got tired of this and asked one of the reps to go back to Customer Service with me.
Upon looking at the box, he looked up the SKU and not finding it in the system, he told me that there is nothing they can do, since it's not in their system and he has no idea how I was able to order one. I politely explained that I have the packing slip from BB.com, order receipt, emails from BB, etc. I had two other people look at it, try to pull up the SKU, then telling me the same thing. It was time to talk to somebody that might have a slightest clue, so I asked for a manager. To make a long story short, after a 25 minute discussion where I was basically accused of "doing something funny", he called somebody else on the phone, and after a short conversation told me that he will "issue me a refund, but this is just not right."
I stayed calm and got the refund, then politely explained to the guy that I can't believe how they can treat a customer in this manner. I don't remember the last time being treated remotely like this, and I will certainly let the corporate office know. He could obviously care less...
Anyway, just wanted to vent. Best Buy lost a VERY good customer, as after this whole TP fiasco I'm just done with them. It's a shame that such a large retailer has so little clue about customer service and competency...
Well the TP is not currently sold in stores yet, its an online only product. I can see why there were confused, but they should've know that though.
Dang! I hope my luck is better. I have a Grey 64GB with dock on pre-order from B&H. It's amazing how lame and helpless these sales people can be. They are slaves to the Point-Of-Sale terminal with no imagination or obvious access to resources.
The correct response would be to accept what you said as true, apologize and issue the refund since they have no units in the store to give you.
Bye.
Hmm, who would've guessed Paul Christoforo would get a job at Best Buy so quickly.

Well obviously since his tablet was only purchasable on wwebsite as on the internet, they couldn't find it.
Mine comes in tomorrow from Best Buy. I hope I don't have any issues that I have to do go through them. Maybe I'll just contact my ASUS rep straight up if I have a problem.

True. Or he could have sold them all on ebay for $150 so there were none left.
Asus packaging really sucks(only booklets is well protected), and BB mailed it in plastic envelope..No wonder there are a lot of problems....
Sorry to hear about the lousy experience. After working in retail, I can deffinently tell you not to threaten with "going to corporate". Just as you said they probably aren't going to care.
Much better to tell the manager on site that you want their District/Regional managers name and phone number. Call the number on the spot if it's during normal daytime hours. This will get you much better results.
District/Regional managers are the normal top dog of the store area, and if you can relay your distress to them in your treatment/experience, results will quickly follow. The store themselves aren't scared of a veiled threat to someone they never directly interact with ("corporate"). But get in touch with their direct boss (the region/district), and that'll put some fear in them...
That doesn't surprise me one bit. Best Buy customer service and return policy is one of the worst I've ever seen.
Now that the competitors (Circuit City, Silo) are gone some long gone Best Buy brick and mortars feel that they can do whatever they want. "Like where else are you going to go?"
but part of this blame also needs to be shared by ASUS for half-ass launching of their product. You don't launch a product to minimum stores unless you want your product to flop.
strange ASUS never revealed the amount of Primes they shipped to US for launch. My guess is under 3,000 units at best.
I was in BB last week, doing other shopping and for the heck of it, asked if they had the dock in yet (they didn't). But all of the BB guys were insisting that the TF Prime was not even out yet and that it had been delayed until Jan. I was like "Of course it's out, I have one!!". Lol... :/

The Best Buy clerks at the retailer in my area knew that they were out but had no idea of when they would be in, they checked their internet computers and only saw what most online-shoppers saw the "Coming Soon" message.
Can someone explain to me again why BB stopped their TFP online ordering nearly 2-weeks before Christmas and put-up a "Coming Soon" banner? Do they not realize how many customers they lost in what I can only see as a dumb move. I mean even if you didn't have any TFP in-stock, you could have at least kept it set up as a pre-order to collect potential buyers, but leaving it as a Coming Soon did no good for anyone, not even their own brick and mortar retailers who also used BB.com.

It is just truly amazing that a retailer the size of Best Buy can have basic issues like this and how unresponsive they are to fix those issues. I think the mentality here is - it is not effecting enough people, so let's just not talk about it.

Curious need some opinions... buy used or not to buy used?

As stated in title, I wanna buy a prime tablet from amazon but their prices are ridiculous at the moment. The only one close to the average 499$ price tag are the used ones.
With all the problems I've been reading about this tablet, I still feel drawn to testing my luck.
The main reason I want to use Amazon is for the "billmelater" option. March is a very heavy birthday filled month in my family so I wont have the actual cash till around may.... I don't want to wait until may.
Also, if i have to start with the sending back n forth process because of light bleeds, reboots, etc etc how is the process with Amazon.com? Is it a headache?
Thanks in advance for everyone's opinion on the matter. I want to make a purchase soon so it can come tomorrow hahaha I want to play with this tablet asap.
Why not just get it new at Officedepot.com? If you order now you will receive it by "Estimated Delivery Date: 02/10/2012." Just checked for you That's where I ordered my Prime. I have no issues whatsoever No wifi/BT fallouts. GPS works great!

If you buy a used prime at $499, your not looking hard enough. But if you really want a prime here is one at jr.com:
Asus Prime Jr.com
Or go to your local BestBuy and tell the sale's clerk you want place an "OMS order SKU: 4038674" theyll ask for a mode of payment and ask you if you want if you are picking up at the store or home delivery in about a week. Even if they are out of stock at BestBuy the "OMS" will check the one of the warehouse of Bestbuy and get you one.

Because I want to pay with "Bill Me Later" so I can pay in installments or all at once within 6 months without interests rates. I don't have the option of dishing out ~550$ TODAY. Not sure what you're trying to say but it seemed like "if they are selling it this close to release...." which I agree that's why im extremely hesistant. But I don't understand why the Amazon prices are so incredibly high when they are supposed to be the cheaper online stores.

The reason is that those aren't being sold by Amazon, they're being sold by other companies THROUGH Amazon's storefront. They're basically what you would find if you went to eBay--third parties selling them at a premium because demand continues to outstrip supply.

Amazon doesn't control the prices for their third party vendors. Amazon just controls the prices where Amazon is the seller. As previous poster pointed out, other vendors use the Amazon storefront, which is the case here. When Amazon sells the Prime, Amazon prices it at $499.

as for buying it used....I agree with the others (it's most likely returned models from the early batches) b/c it's a lot more trouble than it's worth

I'm not sure how many TFP's have been returned, but its possible factory refurbed TFP's might be available soon at a discount. If you can wait a month, you might get a good deal.

Just to be perfectly clear, these higher-priced units are NOT being sold by Amazon, and Amazon is NOT setting the prices on them. They're being sold by 3rd parties at whatever price those 3rd parties want to sell for. Again, it's like eBay, only through Amazon's equivalent (pretty much anyone can sell things through Amazon).
When Amazon ITSELF has the Prime in stock, they sell it at the standard retail price ($499 for 32GB, $599 for 64GB).

Updates to Newegg not accepting my return because serial # sticker was missing.

So a month ago I sent my prime back to Newegg as a return since they didn't have any new ones in stock to replace it. They denied my refund because that tiny sticker on the bottom with the serial had fallen off. They refused to turn the device on to match serials with the warranty manual and box. In my other post, everyone told me to complain to my credit card company since this was the dumbest reason for denying me a refund on a defective prime (weak wifi, wifi/bt issues, no gps, slight light bleed in top right corner). So my credit card company gave me a temporary credit for the amount. The next business day they said the dispute was approved and refund was complete but newegg had already shipped my prime back to me after denying the RMA. I told my cc company about it and they said to just keep the prime since they're done on their end of the dispute.
So the prime has been sitting on my desk for a few weeks. I was waiting for Newegg to contact me to maybe take it back so that we can move on. I tried to log in to my newegg account today and got this message - "We apologize for the inconvenience, but this account has been suspended. Please do not continue to attempt to log in."
They don't want my prime because it's missing the small sticker but I already got my money back. It's like a bad break-up. I feel guilty for putting this thing up for sale, but I really don't want it because of it's defects even if it was "free" in a way.
Just wanted to share my story.
You are probably blacklisted forever....newegg really dislike credit card disputes.

Honestly, after a stupid issue like this I would rather shop elsewhere.
Plus I have a business address or friends that can order for me if I really want something.
I can really tell that they hate CC disputes. I didn't even get a response from them in the form of a call or e-mail. They just a suspended account.
NewEgg is a shady company. Chase, my CC company, refuses all charges from NewEgg citing that they've had inordinate amount of fraud charges coming from NewEgg.
If I "have" to buy from NewEgg, I just expect problems. It's the vendor of last resort for me.
Try contacting Asus. They have awesome customer service!

You must be alone here..... they are an excellent company, have been around for quite some time now. While amazon normally has better prices and faster shipping, every transaction I've ever had with Newegg has been fantastic.
My options right now are:
Sell it on craigslist or RMA through ASUS
I've seen the horror stories... I'll just take the cash and buy other gadgets. lol
I have had ZERO issues with Newegg.com. I been a customer for over 10 years. Fast shipping and excellent service. I still have items I have purchased years ago from them that still work! I have used RMA lots of times and have had ZERO issues. Thats my 2 cents worth.

Unlike wy there, I would chance RMA first. Nothing to lose and you can still sell it after. Might even luck up and get fixes or a new unit

That's interesting. Chase is my credit card company too and it's the only card I use on NewEgg. Never any problems.
I've bought a lot of stuff over the years there. I think they are a good company.
In this case, not letting him return because of a sticker when they could have confirmed the serial, I think, was wrong. But then contesting a charge and keeping the merchandise is a common means of fraud on the internet.

sounds like you tried to remedy the situation and they declined, that's on them.
How much would you like for it, i'll pillage parts from it to try machining a window in the backplate for the antenna to get a signal...

Why not RMA it? Document packaging it up and sending it off. if there really are that many problems with it then you may just get a new one from them. After all you said it, it was free.

I lost my sticker on my Keyboard dock. The sticker on my Prime tablet is still in tact because I keep it on the dock.
What if Newegg, and Asus, black list you serial #, and the poor guy or gal you sell it to, sends it in for warranty work, and it gets confiscated, then what do you do?

Newegg Restocking Fee...

So I have decided to return my prime for a refund due to the bugs and also because I really don't feel like it was worth spending $500 on. I just submitted an RMA when I noticed something..
The restocking fee is $74.85, meaning I'd only be getting $424.15 back. That's almost a hundred dollars just to return the tablet. Should I just try to sell it on craigslist, or what?
Tell them you refuse to pay the restocking fee if the device is defective. If it is just not living up to your standards you might have to pay it. If it IS defective and they won't refund you 100% then you file a claim with your credit card company and tell them EXACTLY what happened, meaning if you still have product in hand ask them what to do. If you do dispute, newegg may suspend your account out of spite, but this IS your right as a consumer.

Also if you do decide to sell it on craigslist your almost certain to take a similar loss on the item. Also please be honest on why it isn't meeting your needs in the description. Otherwise you will have an angry buyer on your hands!

I had that happen too. just call them and they will take it off and send you a prepaid return label

I don't agree given its still kind of difficult to get one in some areas. Unless the unit is truly defective, Craigslist would save someone at least tax. I'd put it up there and see what happens.
It's crazy how fast I can generally sell stuff on craigslist.. If there is a demand for it, it will sell within hours.
The problem about trying to make a credit card dispute is that I used my "newegg preferred account" to pay for it, meaning that I'd still be asking them for the refund. Also, the device isn't really defective, but the wifi is of course a bit poor and the firmware updates aren't really fixing issues without breaking other stuff in the process.
I want a refund but that restock fee is ridiculous.

Does the GPS work on your prime?? If it doesnt tell them that on Newegg.com, the Asus Prime spec states that it has GPS and tell them yours is defective and you want your money back or exchange.

Asus removed gps from the specs and advertising a while ago. Newegg also doesn't list gps.

Yes they do, so your entitled a refund or exchange. Id take a screen capture with the GPS listed on Neweggs's site with the current date. Your prime box probably still have the GPS listed on the box, use that too on Newegg.com. And just tell them my GPS doesnt work, and say that Asus has pulled out of the specs. Tell them you werent notified by Asus or Newegg.com that the GPS has been pulled out, then tell them my box has GPS on it and Newegg.com's site still has GPS on its specs. And push your way out of the restocking fee.

SquareTrade Experience??

I take great care of my tech toys...especially my Prime. But yesterday when I dropped my Transformer on the concrete, I realized anything can happen. It was in my neoprene carrying case with the keyboard attached, and it fell onto one of it's corners nice and solid. I knew for sure something happened, was hoping for just a minor dented corner, but I knew from all the stories here that the screen would be cracked. After 10 mins of growing enough balls to do it, I unzipped the case and checked it out. It is %100 fine...physically and internally!
So I'm going with SquareTrade. I'm rooted and unlocked, and flash custom ROMS/ kernels also, so as far as Asus is concerned I'm an outcast.
Has anyone had any experience with SquareTrade?
I know they're highly recommended and reliable, but I've never heard of anyone actually using it.
Will they just pay me for it because they can't find any Primes or parts for it?
Do they just send it to Asus anyway?
I would hope they cover bricks, but I'm not sure.
Do you have 30 days or 90 days to purchase? I've heard both.
Thanks guys...

While it's still under warranty, you send it to Asus and ST reimburses you for the repair up to the value of your policy.

Voiding your warranty by unlocking it is a grey area. The language in their policy specifically excludes user induced damage related to non-standard h/w and s/w. I don't know if any one here has tested it yet by trying to get reimbursed for a "brick."

I think it's 30 over the web but I've heard of agents doing it outside 30 days over the phone.

Very interesting...thanks. So I have to come out of pocket to Asus, then eventually get reimbursed by SquareTrade? That sucks. I've heard of Prime repairs costing almost as much as a new one.
And by it going to Asus, it would be more likely that it would be detected as a brick with modified software etc...definite grey area. I'm actually considering just getting rid of it while it's still in perfect working condition and holding off for the Infinity. It just seems like even if not by me, somethings gonna give. Screen muras, the mysterious cracked glass from the dock, etc.
Got some thinking to do.
Before I unlocked and got square trade I called them and specifically asked about SOFTWARE unlocking, and say I accidentally dropped it. They said they will cover it, they just stressed to me I can't be opening it physically.
I just purchased the Square Trade warranty for my Transformer Prime yesterday.
I'm usually not interested in an extended warranty from Best Buy or other retailers. I figure they've done the analysis, and if they paid out more then they took in, they certainly wouldn't be pushing extended warranties.
However, if my Prime were to get damaged, I think I'd want to replace it, and at $500 or so, I really would NOT want to have to come out of pocket again.
Also, the reviews on Square Trade are excellent! Very good user experiences when needing to have a device repaired, or, if it's no longer repairable or replaceable, Square Trade seems to refund your purchase price in full!
FYI: I called Square Trade before buying the extended warranty, and asked the salesperson for a discount code. She offered me 10% code, I told her I've seen numerous codes that provided 30% off... she ended up giving me a code that was good for 20% off.
I am currently in the process of having mine repaired through them. I set up a claim online, they sent me a box, it is going to a repair facility in Pennsylvania, they never asked me to send it t o ASUS. They should recieve it today, then they will assess the condition of the unit.
Just had a DroidX repaired by Square Trade. They gave me a pre-paid shipping label (two days) repaired the unit, and had it back in my hands exactly one week later. (I shipped on a Monday, received it back on a Monday.)
I am very impressed...and glad I have a SquareTrade warranty on my Prime.

That is fantastic to hear, having just dropped a few bucks on a Square Trade warranty!
Thanks for the info!
FWIW, I've had SquareTrade repair my step-kid's S-OFF'd & rooted Aria multiple times and they have never given me grief because it was unlocked. Although they did return it once after fixing a broken screen with a screenshot showing the Superuser app installed and circled in red. Not sure what they were trying to say there, but it was repaired nonetheless.

Haha that's great. That's what I wanted to hear.
I bought a sqauretrade warranty a few weeks ago, I insured my tfp for $700 for the tablet and the dock, but since I didn't buy a bundle they only insure the tablet for $535, they offered me a 30 dollar keyboard dock warranty but I doubt my dock will break before my tablet so I will cut my loses when I upgrade.
Anyone want to give me some insurance fraud tips for when I plan to upgrade so they don't replace it with another TFP? I was thinking about throwing it in the pool and making sure it hit the deck first so they can't fix it lol.

Go do some work on your roof with music playing on tablet. Then accidently slip it off with the hammer and all the other tools following it. That should do it.

Can you please keep me posted on what happens? I'm going to get a policy this weekend, but I'd still like to know what to expect should something happen. Also can I ask what was in need of repair? Thanks

I'm buying a policy tomorrow, because I dropped my Prime TWICE in 5 days! I've never done that to any electronics I've ever had, and most likely once I get a policy I will never drop it again
But it was docked and closed and in a neoprene carrying case, and by some miracle, nothing happened.
Thanks again for the info
