I take great care of my tech toys...especially my Prime. But yesterday when I dropped my Transformer on the concrete, I realized anything can happen. It was in my neoprene carrying case with the keyboard attached, and it fell onto one of it's corners nice and solid. I knew for sure something happened, was hoping for just a minor dented corner, but I knew from all the stories here that the screen would be cracked. After 10 mins of growing enough balls to do it, I unzipped the case and checked it out. It is %100 fine...physically and internally!
So I'm going with SquareTrade. I'm rooted and unlocked, and flash custom ROMS/ kernels also, so as far as Asus is concerned I'm an outcast.
Has anyone had any experience with SquareTrade?
I know they're highly recommended and reliable, but I've never heard of anyone actually using it.
Will they just pay me for it because they can't find any Primes or parts for it?
Do they just send it to Asus anyway?
I would hope they cover bricks, but I'm not sure.
Do you have 30 days or 90 days to purchase? I've heard both.
Thanks guys...

While it's still under warranty, you send it to Asus and ST reimburses you for the repair up to the value of your policy.

Voiding your warranty by unlocking it is a grey area. The language in their policy specifically excludes user induced damage related to non-standard h/w and s/w. I don't know if any one here has tested it yet by trying to get reimbursed for a "brick."

I think it's 30 over the web but I've heard of agents doing it outside 30 days over the phone.

Very interesting...thanks. So I have to come out of pocket to Asus, then eventually get reimbursed by SquareTrade? That sucks. I've heard of Prime repairs costing almost as much as a new one.
And by it going to Asus, it would be more likely that it would be detected as a brick with modified software etc...definite grey area. I'm actually considering just getting rid of it while it's still in perfect working condition and holding off for the Infinity. It just seems like even if not by me, somethings gonna give. Screen muras, the mysterious cracked glass from the dock, etc.
Got some thinking to do.
Before I unlocked and got square trade I called them and specifically asked about SOFTWARE unlocking, and say I accidentally dropped it. They said they will cover it, they just stressed to me I can't be opening it physically.
I just purchased the Square Trade warranty for my Transformer Prime yesterday.
I'm usually not interested in an extended warranty from Best Buy or other retailers. I figure they've done the analysis, and if they paid out more then they took in, they certainly wouldn't be pushing extended warranties.
However, if my Prime were to get damaged, I think I'd want to replace it, and at $500 or so, I really would NOT want to have to come out of pocket again.
Also, the reviews on Square Trade are excellent! Very good user experiences when needing to have a device repaired, or, if it's no longer repairable or replaceable, Square Trade seems to refund your purchase price in full!
FYI: I called Square Trade before buying the extended warranty, and asked the salesperson for a discount code. She offered me 10% code, I told her I've seen numerous codes that provided 30% off... she ended up giving me a code that was good for 20% off.
I am currently in the process of having mine repaired through them. I set up a claim online, they sent me a box, it is going to a repair facility in Pennsylvania, they never asked me to send it t o ASUS. They should recieve it today, then they will assess the condition of the unit.
Just had a DroidX repaired by Square Trade. They gave me a pre-paid shipping label (two days) repaired the unit, and had it back in my hands exactly one week later. (I shipped on a Monday, received it back on a Monday.)
I am very impressed...and glad I have a SquareTrade warranty on my Prime.

That is fantastic to hear, having just dropped a few bucks on a Square Trade warranty!
Thanks for the info!
FWIW, I've had SquareTrade repair my step-kid's S-OFF'd & rooted Aria multiple times and they have never given me grief because it was unlocked. Although they did return it once after fixing a broken screen with a screenshot showing the Superuser app installed and circled in red. Not sure what they were trying to say there, but it was repaired nonetheless.

I bought a sqauretrade warranty a few weeks ago, I insured my tfp for $700 for the tablet and the dock, but since I didn't buy a bundle they only insure the tablet for $535, they offered me a 30 dollar keyboard dock warranty but I doubt my dock will break before my tablet so I will cut my loses when I upgrade.
Anyone want to give me some insurance fraud tips for when I plan to upgrade so they don't replace it with another TFP? I was thinking about throwing it in the pool and making sure it hit the deck first so they can't fix it lol.

Go do some work on your roof with music playing on tablet. Then accidently slip it off with the hammer and all the other tools following it. That should do it.

I'm buying a policy tomorrow, because I dropped my Prime TWICE in 5 days! I've never done that to any electronics I've ever had, and most likely once I get a policy I will never drop it again
But it was docked and closed and in a neoprene carrying case, and by some miracle, nothing happened.
Thanks again for the info

People that bought their tablet at BestBuy are u opting into getting the Black tie protection plan?
I bought the 32gb 10.1 tablet and they stated that the prices are:
1yr- $110
2yr- $170
3yr- $249
Tech support with accidental damage coverage.
You also get half off the buy back program if u purchase the above.
$25 instead of $50
Also share yoru thoughts on why or why u didnt purchase.
You can add the service when u purchase or within the 14 day return window (just have to bring device in for them to confirm all is ok)
Have you comparison shopped at squartrade.com first of all?
Personally I never buy warranties. I guess I'm just careful with my stuff. Simple as that.

Squaretrade price for this tablet including accidental damage (water, screen breaking, etc) for 2 years is 69.99 with a $30 off code of thirty30.
If you're afraid of breaking your screen or whatever, this is the way to go. No deductible.
As per an article in PC World magazine, July issue I beleive, Best Buy will not cover you if the "accidental damage" occurs if you leave it on the roof of your car, drive off, then it falls under the wheel and then you run it over but Squaretrade will. So if you get BB don't tell them your car ran over it. BB only covers damage if damaged while under "normal use."
I just got out from under my rock ... this is the first i am hearing about squaretrade.com
ya i checked it out and it would be 69.99 for a year
i guess if anything is wrong u would have to mail the unit to them ... maybe even pay for return shipping ...?
i have to read more about it ... u can add this service at anytime?
how do they know if the tablet is not already broken when u add service .. u have to send in receipt?
this is definitely cheaper then bestbuy ... having spent 600 i feel u need some type of protection
Here's the terms of the accidental damage coverage:
"If your warranty is bought on the same day as your item, then ADH coverage begins immediately, otherwise ADH coverage begins 30 days after purchase, and does not cover willful damage, negligent use, theft or loss. A $50 deductible applies on ADH-related claims for Cell Phones only. SquareTrade has waived the deductible for all other ADH claims. ADH is not available on all items. "

That $69.99 was for 2 years not 1.
If you are simply having a "problem" with it you have to send it back. They send a prepaid label. Usually they just send you a refund for the entire device rather than fix it.
My wife had a B&N Nook Color and she dropped it in the bathtub while reading a book. After shaking the goldfish out of it and baking it in a container full of rice it was still dead so I filed a claim online with S.T. the next morning. 2 hours later I had a return label and 8 hours after that I was paid in full for the Nook. EVEN BEFORE I RETURNED IT TO THEM. Was quite surprised.
One difference between BB and ST: With ST if they pay you for the device if it is damaged or dies that's it, your "2 year" coverage is over. You get your check and you're done. If you replace the device you must buy the coverage again. With BB they just give you a new one and your overpriced coverage continues for the term of your policy.

thanks for clarifying and suggesting this service to me. I am definitely going to go this route then.
they explained it to me that if your coverage is 600 and u send in for a repair and they note that is cost 100 to repair and then next month u drop it in the fish tank .. they only give u back your remaining balance ... $500 ...
so that is really the main difference between this and BB
u can bring in to best buy every week for repairs and replacements and with ST u only have a $600 spending limit. so if each repair cost $100 .. u can only get it fixed 6 times in the 2 years ... so the coverage is either $600 or 2 years .. whatever comes first ... like car warranties .... 100k miles or 10 years
I never buy extended warranties...for 2 main reasons:
1) They're largely a scam and the store gets a large portion of the price they charge for them (which is why they instantly discount them the second you decline).
2) I'm fairly persistent and persuasive when it comes to getting companies to stand behind their product. I've gotten Nissan, Samsung, and others to pay for repairs of products that were out of warranty. And I'm with LordLugard...I take good care of my stuff.
Definitely stay away from any Best Buy warranty policy, way too overpriced! They tried selling me one and I just laughed when I heard their prices. Sqaretrade is where its at, thats where I bought mine from. Also, setting up your warranty is super easy. For example, I ordered my tab through Amazon and all I did was forward squaretrade my invoice and that was all they needed, couldnt have been any easier. And you never know when you might accidentally get bumped into and whoops, there goes your shattered $600 tablet.
Dont waste your money at bestbuy. If you want a protection plan get one from square trade.
Best Buys plan is so much more expensive because its actually TWO companies involved. Best Buy and AIG insurance.
Check out worthavegroup.com thats where I bought my tablet insurance.
Ok, so I have a question about SquareTrade.
I put a quote for my 16GB model and it is $54.99 for two years or $38.49 with the 30% off code. However, if I look that only covers 100% parts/labor, etc. It looks like accidental damage is an additional $45.
Those of you that are saying $69.99 does that include the accidental addition? I have never used squaretrade before (just heard of it recently), so those that have, what does the normal warranty cover?
Any additional information is greatly appreciated.
Nevermind. I just looked at the other picture posted earlier and the accidental was on there.
But, if anyone still wants to expand on my questions minus the cost, that would be great
http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/learn-more-warranty-buyer
also, as you read this page, click "see details". Looks like mostly parts failure, and labor cost which I assume is covered by Samsung for 1 year, but you can use this for up to two years.
Honestly I'm thinking I'll get this mainly for the accidental damage. I would be devastated if I broke my screen lol.
This is incorrect. If your device gets replaced through best buys protection plan, coverage is over and you would have to repurchase the plan for the replaced device.

I bought and Ipad 1in january with the black tie protection accidental coverage($109.00). My screen got cracked today and I took it to best buy. Within 30 seconds of getting there, thw geek squad kid told me he would give ma a new one to replace it. He then went on to say that they dont have anymore ipad 1. That I would get an Ipad2.
I asked him if I could get a galaxy tab 10.1. He said no, but that I could take the ipad 2 and come back to exchange it. That's what I did and now I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1.
In summary, Im a believer of the protection program. I bought an ipad in january and now I have A GALAXY TAB 10.1

I agree and disagree with you. As an employee, I don't see them as a scam at all. I do think that they are pricey for a regular customer (considering what we pay for them). We also won't (well, shouldn't per our policy) discount them just because you decline at first. That doesn't happen at our store.
To your second point, I don't see any company repairing something for free that you physically damaged. Best Buy won't do it without a GSBTP plan with ADH (you can get them without it) and I've never seen a manufacturer do it either.
This doesn't feel like it was a serious poll.
I possibly, have a chance to buy a Prime tomorrow. It's very possible someone else might buy it before me because I won't have the $ until later morning. Got emailed the pics of it. The seller says to email him when I get the cash.
Of course, I hope that the seller waits for me or that no one gets it before I do. I am concerned about Wifi and I can't return it if it was defective! I would turn it on and test it thoroughly before giving cash.
I doubt that I will get it before another quicker buyer but, Would you girls and guys go for it?
Edit GOT IT!!!
I just downloaded the new software update thingy. Interestingly, Wifi seems to have improved BUT, I will test it some more. Looks good though.
Also, I have a crap cellphone the Samsung intercept, so the videowas atrocious but hopefully, I can upload it from this Prime. The pics are low quality too but will post later!
Gorgeous, super tablet I must say. Very fast. Im sad that my Prime is missing the S hadowgun and Bladeslinger demos! Andy , could go u upload them or where can I get them. The price of getting it early lol! Riptide is amazing!! The water effects!!!! Wow!
Very happy I got it, definitely worth, even with th e wifi issue. Sorry not used to typing on my Prime obviously lol!
I am sorry that I had my private messages off, if anyone wants to PM me, by all means do so. Pics later!

I'd make sure you get the original receipt for it so if it needs to be exchanged or needs warranty work you're covered. Other than that, assuming you're OK with what you'll be paying for it, go for it.
P.S. - Do the exchange in a restaurant and get there first. Meeting strangers that know you'll have cash with you is something to be wary of.
Do you know where this person got their Prime from? Is it covered by warranty?
If it is not under warranty then I don't think it is worth it cause if it is defective or it becomes defective then you are screwed.
The seller says he obtained it from through a promotion last week at a technology media event in New York. Lucky man.
It's not from a store, so no receipt. I will ask if he has a paper with it. It's a USA Prime, so warranty by Asus

Good advice because I'm going long distance to a big city. I definitely am meeting in a public restaurant IF I even get the thing
Just my 2¢ on the issue: Don't worry about the warranty. Since it's a brand new product, you don't have to prove when you bought it. I sent in my Transformer multiple times to ASUS directly for service, and they never questioned when/where I purchased it...
There are others who will disagree, and of course, everyone's entitled to my opinions
If it was me...
I would only buy it if the box is still sealed. That's just me though, for my own peace of mind. Goodluck and keep us posted.

My point exactly, since you are getting the device right after it's released (before its released actually), so even if they count it to the day it was released you'd still get 1 full year of warranty.
I personally would not do it. It's just like people who charge close to retail for their used Ipads. If I'm paying close to retail, I may as just well purchase it for the retail price so I can have the peace of mind of going back to the store if anything goes wrong. Don't forget that since it's the holidays, most stores have extended return periods. Also, I know we all are eager to get the new prime but 1 or 2 months from now, if you are having problems with the unit, you have to ask yourself was it worth it to buy it a week early or would it have been better to wait a week and have your own receipt and the ability to return it to the store if you needed to.

You could also buy one at a B&M reseller once they're more widely available and return it. Keep the original receipt and return it with a photocopy or do it at BB where they can track the transaction by CC number and you don't need a receipt for returns. Use that to send in should it need repair. And for those with a higher moral standard then mine, it's bending the rules not breaking them.

Good point. I know Costco doesn't. GameStop's not too sophisticated so they may not. I'm not sure about Target and Walmart. BB probably does.
I guess nobody else is curious or maybe they are just classier than me but how much ya payin for it? Good luck too by the way.

Honestly, I would pay that right now. After tax and shipping that's what it would cost anyway. My preorder at GS was $544. Go for it. Even if you can handle yourself, take somebody with you for added security anyway. I don't know what it's like in NJ but I'm in Texas and I think I would have a heater in the truck.
I wouldn't do it especially for that price unless you absolutely need to have it now. Then again, I know how it feels to want something so bad that you are willing to pay over MSRP for it. You have to ask yourself, is it worth it to pay a $100 markup on something that may be on shelves in a week. Even if it's released next month, you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to pay more for something that you can't freely return in any store since he isn't giving you a receipt. If you have the money and you need it that bad, then pull the trigger. This thread reminds me of when I paid $750 for the Nokia n95 before it hit stateside. Never again my friend, never again.
Just to reiterate it's not really a $100 markup if you have to pay tax and have it shipped. $544 with tax in Tejas. Add shipping and its much closer to 6 hundo. Plus, waiting an extra month or two is not worth saving $50 - $100; to me anyway.
I would pay for it because at gamestop with overnight shipping charges, mine comes out to $554, but thats just me.
He would get much more on eBay for it. Grab the chance while you have it.
I got my TF201 (grey 64 gb model) in January and have been struggling with multiple issues since i received it. I recently got the GPS dongle at the end of September which made the GPS reception better but i was still having other issues (especially with intermittent screen flicker).
I contacted everyone i could think of involved with the purchase:
* The manufacturer; Asus - they wanted me to send it in for warranty repair and I would pay for shipping...
* The vendor i bought it from; Expansys - they offered an RMA for repair, but warned it would take 6-8 weeks and i would pay for shipping...
* The aftermarket warranty company; SquareTrade; they gave me a free label to print and ship it to them and said i would have it back within 5 days.
So I sent my TF201 (grey 64gb model) to Square Trade for repair... i reported the following issues to them:
1) Screen flicker
2) Poor WiFi reception
3) Poor GPS reception
4) Poor Bluetooth reception
They had it for 5 business days before notifying me that they were going to fix it; they updated the claim right as they closed for the day.
I called them on the 6th business day and explained they had it for more then 5 days, the rep confirmed this was true and they refunded me the 79.99 i paid for the warranty since they did not have it back to me within the 5 day period. They also said it would take another 7 to 10 days for parts to arrive before they can fix it and ship it back to me
So at this point i had a free warranty on the device.... cool, but i still had to wait for the repaired item.
On the 8th business day i brought out the big guns and let my wife call them to get another update. At that time she explained to the SquareTrade rep that this was ridiculous and that we needed it back sooner as i was going out of town and my wife needed the device while i was gone.
The rep understood that refunding the cost of the device (599) would allow us to purchase a replacement sooner then waiting for them to send the repaired item back; so the rep authorized the reimbursement of the full $599
So i got my $599 plus the $79.99 back.... I love SquareTrade!
Now if only i could find a buyer for the dock/keyboard and GPS dongle...

LOL! sorry guys, I was little thrown off - my intent of posting was to share my experience with SquareTrade... I was not trying to solicit buyers for the dock. I suppose that is a bonus to posting the story though. I responded to the both of you via PM with a preference on the first received inquiry.
Thats awesome. When did you get your squaretrade warranty?
I have always had good experiences with square trade. I tried to get their warranty for my prime, but i bought mine on craigslist and they wouldnt let me. Owell. So are you gonna get another asus product with the refund money?
I got the square trade warranty the day after I purchased the prime; prior to its delivery.
This was my first and only experience with square trade.
I did already buy a Nexus 7 which is an Asus product but I don't think I will be getting another Transformer. Ironically I have been experiencing screen flicker with the Nexus 7 also.

Thank you for this. I bought a 2 yr squaretrade warranty and I'm going to exercise that soon....as soon as I get my Prime back from Asus
I've been holding off using my squaretrade warranty in hopes that Gamestop will do an exchange for the Infinity and while I wait for something better that's not an Asus POS to come out. I figure if I have to go through squaretrade because of Asus's lack of support, then I will never buy another Asus product again.
Not so lucky with SquareTrade...
Similar issue to OP, but didn't get nearly the same results.
My Prime arrived at their repair center yesterday. Got an e-mail today saying it was fixed, and was on its way back to me.
I called to ask what was repaired. They said the technician noted that they had reloaded the latest update and reset to factory defaults.... Ummmmm.... I did that before I ever shipped it to them!
So, no fix, and headed back here... I really wish I could get GameStop to replace/refund this thing or ASUS to refund... Both of those avenues seem to be a dead end...

I think you are lucky then - if that is all they did then nothing should have been deducted from the total value of your warranty!
So when you get your prime back and the issue continues, call them back and be prepared to send it in again.
I would also politely request better attention to detail from their technicians and explain that you have already been without the prime for x many days so you would really appreciate a swift resolution.
I'll let you all know my experience as my tablet has been sent off. I explained that it was already sent to Asus and some repairs have been done but still poor wifi issues.
I sent my Prime to Squaretrade for repairs as the HDMI port on the prime was bad, it took them less than two days to get them back to me after they received it. Well I was all happy until I decided to match the serial numbers and guess what, they don't match. My prime is a 32gb and the one they sent is a 64gb, not complaining, double the storage. But the HDMI on this one doesnt work either. I tried 3 different tv sets and different cables and nothing. It used to work before on my 32gb but the port felt loose. So I call them and they are trying to figure what happened with the repair center, should I claim them the full price and switch to an Infinity or Nexus 10?

So what happened with this? Did you get your original tablet back repaired, or did you get the original cost of the tablet reimbursed to you from SquareTrade?
I also sent you a PM.
klownkillah, I sent you a PM too.
I was also curious what happened with @ganyapr's prime - it certainly is an interesting situation.
@unknown_owner - i replied to your pm; it wasn't my prime.
Sorry for not updating. Well, it turned out that the technician mixed back covers and sent me the wrong unit. I had to send it back and squaretrade refunded me the money for warranty. I have to wait until next Monday to know what happend to my original prime since they cant find it now. If they cant find it they will give me the 64gb version instead of the 32gb I had or refund me the full price of the tablet. I'll let you know guys next week of what happens.
Should I just ask the for the refund and move on?

wow - I expected squaretrade and their repair facility to be more on top of things.... if it were me i would say something like:
'this is ridiculous! you guys don't even know what happened to, or where, my original prime is! at this point i have already been without the device for X many days! please refund the full amount of the device; this will obviously be the quickest and most expedient way for me to get back to using the device'
If that works then you could either buy it again or purchase a different model that is not plagued by the issues the prime had.
An update
So the repair center called me and they did replaced the mainboard and Squaretrade updated the serial number. My original was a 32gb and the replacement is a 64gb so I will stay with it instead of asking for full refund, the only issue I had was the hdmi port. Lets see how the wifi is on this unit as I didn't had an issue with my original.

So today, after I just finished rooting my phone, stepped out to have a smoke. I walked and dropped my phone off a wooden stair and into a icicle puddle on an already present soft pile of snow. On the first hit the back flew off and then fell battery side first. It now won't turn on, so would best buy cover this?
My first thought is by protection you mean not letting them touch my phone, then yes
Being serious if their protection covers accidental damage they should be to swap it out no problem. If not and you have insurance on your phone go to a VZW store.
Neither place can tell if you are rooted/unlocked etc when the phone doesn't power up.
Yeah, they should replace it no problem. You'll be without your phone for several days, but that's about the worst of it. I used their plan for a couple of years with my Galaxy Nexus. Was pretty easy to work with.
Do they cover water damage though? I know assurian will not cover the device for water damage. They have those white stickers on battery and inside back of phone. When it gets wet it turns red. Not sure about best buy coverage but wanted to give you a heads up just in case. Sorry to hear about your loss that does suck.

I have the geek squad through best buy and I pay 9.99 a month. I had gs3 before this that I bought in august at best buy. They replaced my gs3 twice one after I flashed miui and my phone wouldn't make phone calls or texts and once after the head phone Jack stopped working. Both times they gave me brand new gs3 in store same night they normally send it out and you can get a loaner smart phone for $50 deposit but because refurbished gs3 was on back order they gave me it brand new. Just last week I flashed slim bean 4.2.1 and had the same problem wouldn't make phone calls and after factory reset it was stuck in roaming they couldn't fix it. I told them I had been trying to get Verizon to give me alternate replacement because id been dropping alot of calls and they said because it was gonna be my third replacement and twice it was the sane problem they could give me a credit for $ 699.00 for the full value of the phone and I could pick any phone At best buy so I had them price match Amazon wireless and they have me the note 2 for $699.00 and I just had to start my geek squad program from that date even though I airway payed for this month but I figured it's worth paying for the geek squad twice in one month to get a brand new note 2. So I would say if you have the coverage for 9.99 a month they should definitely replace it. It's just whether or not the on backorder. If the refurbished ones are not on backorder then they ll get you a refurbished in 5 days or so our they can try to fix your phone but that can take 2-3 weeks. ThIs is what they told me before they realized the gs3 was on backorder. How this helps sorry for long explanation. I would definitely recommend geek squad to any one buying a smart phone though because there is no deductible and unlimited claims. Also they told me they don't care if your phone if Is rooted they will still try to fix it or replace it.

Your experience is a huge exception to the rule. No store here will give you a new phone from their store stock, even if refurbs are unavailable ( it is against Best Buy policy). You simply wait. Is it possible you have connections in the store?
Even with me making a public spectacle of Best Buy's shady Black Tie protection, I didn't get a new phone in-store.

No connections at all. The guy asked me do you want to have your phone repaired(2-3 weeks) or do you want a rapid exchange(5 days) I agreed to have phone repaired so I would get the same phone back. He put it in the computer and he said it told him to do rapid exchange then he tried that and it told him to replace it in Store. I had no thoughts of getting a brand new phone it just Happened that way then the 2nd time I didn't mention getting a new one the first time and the same thing happened and it was a different employee. The 3rd time just recently when I got the note 2 I didn't mention any thing about previous new replacements and they offered me another new replacement but i explained the situation with Verizon and wanting an alternate replacement than he told me they could fulfill the plan and give me the credit and that's what I did this time also different employee than 2 previous times. but I definitely don't have connections

It will be covered. You'll have to wait about a week to get it back.
My suggestion is to always either break your phone to the max or damage the phone in away that you can restore to stock so no warranty issues arise.

Hogwash on whoever told you that.
The insurance is to cover things not covered by warranty.
For instance, dropping and breaking your phone voids the warranty. Naturally, Black Tie and other insurance comes into play then. If they didn't, that would be grounds for fraud on their part and many lawsuits would ensue.
The only things you need to worry about are what they don't cover according to their TOS.

Yeah they cover water damage ... its insurance. Like was stated it would open up a major can of worms if they had retarded stipulations.
Having worked for Best Buy Mobile for over 2 years now, I will share what GSP (Geek Squad Protection) means for you.
The plan is allowed only for phones purchased from Best Buy or a non-refurbished like-new iPhone not originally purchased from Best Buy. The plan is phone specific and can cover any phone Best Buy distributes.
Here is what the plan covers and the costs:
Covers:
Water Damage(full submersion and battery replacement)
Accidental damage, broken screen, hardware physicalities etc.
Software malfunctions/defects
Original purchased accessories included in phone packaging including earbuds, charger cable etc.
Unlimited Claims
No deductibles($0)
Loaner Phone coverage(some stores charge $50 deposits).
No commitment, can be cancelled by owner at any desired time
9.99 for smartphones/169.99 for 2 years outright
14.99 for iPhones/269.99 for 2 years outright
5.99 for basic phones/119.99 for 2 years outright
(if an outright plan is purchased, it can still be cancelled and prorated for months used as a refund).
Does not Cover:
Lost or Stolen Items
How it works:
Best Buy goes through a vendor known as Jabil to replace the phones made from service claims. Jabil is a facility that commisions the manufacturers to send parts to the facility to be manufactured back to original state OR send a completely new/already remanufactured device to Best Buy to return to you. The item is not classed "refurbished".
The process for the claim is 2-3 business days.
Exceptions:
If no phones are available on hand to be shipped in for the claim the item may be put on "backorder" where it may take 5-7 business days for it to be received.
If no phones are available and backorder is not an option, you may qualify for a substitute where you can choose an upgraded model of the current phone.
If the phone is not available to be backordered and no substitute exists, it is considered a repair which may take 1-2 weeks to return to the store. (it is the same unit that is sent to be repaired).
If any of these above conditions cannot be fulfilled or produce a working phone for you, Geek Squad "Junks-out" the phone (as stated in a post on the first page of this thread) where you get the full retail value of the phone when purchased to redeem in store on another phone.
I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

About 10 days ago I broke the LCD of my new HTC One. Because I traded my Xperia ZL for this One - I cancelled the insurance policy I've been carrying on my AT&T account for the past 4 years (and NEVER used it, mind you). What was odd was that the LCD didn't even break immediately upon impact. I dropped it on a ceramic tile floor (it had an Incipio Feather case on it - which did nothing but prevent scratching) and it appeared to sustain no damage. So, after picking it up I placed it on to a stone counter top where it proceeded to spiderweb and crack right before my very eyes. I was in shock. (this video is WHY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwE9PGDnlvs) Anyways, moving right along - I called AT&T and tried to add insurance back to my account (not telling them I just broke my phone of course) but AT&T obviously refused to since I didn't buy the phone from them. On the same note, I'm sure, had I not cancelled the insurance, it wouldn't have been covered due to the same reason - but that's neither here nor there at this point.
So, I contacted HTC. I told them I dropped the device and the LCD was cracked. I asked for a quote to repair it. The gentlemen advised me 'up to $180.00". Honestly, I was surprised it wasn't more expensive. I asked if I send it in to them and they quote me a higher price than I want to pay - what happens? He advised me they would just send it back not repaired (I've NEVER broken a phone before so I'm not familiar with this process). I sent the One in to HTC (actually, most likely to an authorized repair center: CTS-PCS) in Houston, TX via USPS Priority Mail with insurance on 6/4. They received it 6/6. And today they contacted me with a quote of exactly $180.00. So I paid it and now I'm waiting for them to complete the repairs and send it back. I figured paying $180 to fix it was smarter than selling it for however much I could get for it and risk losing hundreds of dollars in the process. Also, the fact that iFixit scored it a 1 out of 10 on ease of repair also did not give me much hope in finding someone other than HTC (that I even trusted) to disassemble my device and repair properly.
Anyways, the point is to GET THIS INFORMATION OUT THERE. I came to XDA (yes, I realize this is a developer site... but it was my first instinct) in search of others who may have had similar experiences and couldn't really find anything definitive. I certainly couldn't find an actual dollar amount quoted by HTC to fix the LCD alone. I'm sure I won't be/haven't been the ONLY one to break the LCD. Maybe, going forward this thread could also serve as a place to post ANY type of repair experiences with HTC (or anyone else that CAN fix it)?
*Once I get my One back I will post again to let people gauge exactly how long the repair process took from start to finish.
Phone insurance is generally a waste of money. Even with the insurance you'd still have to pay the $199 deductible, which is more than the cost of the repair outright.
I'd rather put the $7/month in the bank and after the 2 yr contract there's enough to pay the subsided price on a new handset.

Costco warranty. $100 up front, $25 replacements for brand new phones upon damages up for 4 times.
So you're paying $4 a month and a $24 deductible.
OP paid $180 to repair his phone.
Warranty is also transferable and I believe can be cancelled to get your money prorated back.
The only thing it does not cover is theft. And if you live in the shady parts of Southern California, you better be extra careful with your devices.

Good point cschmitt and even if you do pay the $199 deductible to replace it they usually give you a refurbished device. (other than the cracked LCD my One is in MINT condition) And Slim, makes me wish I had bought mine at Costco. Oh well. You live and learn.
can we buy costco warranty if phone is not purchased from them?

Good question, I will call them and find out and report back.
EDIT: Ok, here's what I found out. You can't buy the insurance through Costco unless you buy the phone from them. The sales rep did advise me about Square Trade - its $129 he said... but when I checked out their site I found you have to either buy it from a retailer or via eBay. (via retailer the cost is a flat fee of $125 or $6.99 per month for a 2 year plan) Someone like me (who got my phone locally via trade with an individual) is NOT eligible for Square Trade. Good info to know.

If you sign up on square trades Facebook page they send you coupons weekly for up to 50% off the price. I get coupons sent to me all the time.

But Costco has a deal with Square Trade for the $25 deductible. And I believe you get device replacements from Costco on the spot. The deal is different from teh Costco website.
Purchase your phones at Costco, there are nothing but pros and no cons I can think of.
So, it turns out the repair center didn't have the parts to fix my One so they were holding it for the materials. Today, I finally got an email that it's done and will be shipping out shortly. I must say, this whole process wasn't TOO excruciating. Thank God I keep a back up phone! So, I would imagine if they had had the parts on hand it probably would have been fixed and sent back out last week. I'm finally glad this whole thing is almost over.
It took a little while but the FedEx tracking number that HTC provided is now active and my device should be back to me by Tuesday. I just hope and pray nothing goes wrong in transit. I will post again when I have it. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the speed at which this repair was processed and completed. Someone else said theirs took about 10 days & I'm assuming they didn't have to wait for the parts to come in like I did.
Good informational thread. Thanks.

Well if something like this happened to me I would have just called and added the insurance back on it and then wait a couple weeks (maybe 2-6) and then just say my phone got stolen/lost, pay the deductible and get a new one. Either send the broken one to HTC to fix or sell kit broken

Hi, please update us on how your repair was. I just sent my HTC One due to yellow spot on the corner and dead pixels. Worried about how well they handle the phones. I just wanna know how is your new screen and is there any new damage to the phone? Scratches? Thanks.

I tried that bro. Because I didn't buy it from AT&T they wouldn't let me add the insurance back. Hello, that was the first thing I thought to do!!!!! ( I did say that in the OP) LOL
Also, the deductible to replace it is $200. To fix it was $180. Ultimately I would have rather paid the $200 and not have to wait for the repair but $180 is still cheaper.

I am supposed to get my One tomorrow so will certainly report back with the results. Other than the damaged display the body was MINT so I too am concerned with any scratches, etc on the body. Will, post again when I have it.

Got my One back today. It's MINT! The display is PERFECT and the body is unscathed. My dumbass forgot to take out my SIM tray and when I got it back it HAS NO SIM TRAY. I called a couple AT&T stores... none have one. One of the AT&T reps gave me the # for the local AT&T warranty repair shop so I called them but they don't have one either. HTC is sending me replacement SIM tray FREE but via UPS ground. So I ordered one off eBay. Hopefully I have it by Thursday or Friday.
EDIT: I asked HTC if I could PAY to expedite the shipping of the SIM tray and they said 'no'. They would only send it via UPS ground (for no fee). Word to the wise: Learn from my error and REMOVE YOUR SIM TRAY if you're sending your device in for repair. HTC will remove it and NOT replace it prior to sending it back to you.

Smart move. I am SO completely moronic. I don't know how I didn't get that out of this following paragraph that was included in the initial repair email from HTC:
Remember to remove any accessories from the phone - such as the battery, SIM card, storage card, SIM cover and/or battery cover (Note: some of these parts cannot be removed from all devices - please check our support site if you are uncertain). Please also backup any important information you will want to keep before shipping your phone.
LOL, SMH
