Hi all, i've been having this problem with my Sony Ericson xperia Play.
My bills came in as a hefty $$ bomb. I do not have data plan, so all internet activities are charged at GPRS connection rate. I've had my mobile network switched off, so there's no possibility that applications would still connect to data? Or there is? i only use my phone for smsing and dealing calls.
I called my service provider up, and they told me that my phone's internet activity is active and running. have you guys ever encountered such problem? Could anyone please enlighten me?
Thanks in advance to all.
Usually there arent any problems like this for android. And just to
make sure, the box u checked off was in Settings>Wireless & Networks>
Mobile Networks>Data enabled right?
Normally once you get a phone, the data will automatically on. So normally I will boot up without sim at first, then switch off data.
(I've unlimited plan btw)

You could always use an app that will not allow any apps to access the network. ie a firewall like (droid wall for rooted users). That would eliminate your problem. There are many apps out there which need permission to access the network, including the stock email, google maps, the market, and etc.
I'm of the same mind as the previous posters. But if you see data being used ie. the 3G symbol or whatever your data symbol is and it lights up or is present when the check mark on mobile data is off then it's not actually off. In other words if you don't see only the cell singal bars you could be using data. Hope that helps.
Edit: Also you said "SMSing" would that also include pictures or video in your defn of that? If so those are data. At least in the U.S. they are.
There is a program called APNdraoid or sg like that. this program modifies the apn settings and dont allow your phone to connect to mobile internet. btw you can manually change the apn settings from Settings->Wireless&Networks-> Mobile Networks->Access Point Names. all you have to do is to modify the settings (add some text to the end of the apn row)

To avoid data charges (and seems that you don't have a data plan), I would suggest delete all your APN settings under Access Point Name in Mobile network settings.
If the problem still occurs, you can call your operator to disable internet access from your mobile account.

Thanks for the suggestions ! i'd just go ahead and change the apn ! But i still can't find the root to the problem. It's like paying for something i had never used at all ..
Btw, I am curious that if you tried to load a webpage in your browser when mobile network is unticked? If you did, does it load?

Hi Guys, I got fond of the Hero a lot. and requested a friend to get one for me on his way from london (sim free, unlocked)
1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy
Appreciate your clear and quick responses.

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

does shutting mobile network shut data only?
the toggle is native
no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.
thanks in advance
to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.
Thank you, appreciate it
I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update
Whilst using the root for my xperia x10 I ran into a problem, I couldn't use data on apps other than my browser(couldn't download anything either) but the only way to fix this is to go to Settings>Wireless Controls> Mobile Networks>Access Point Names... from there delete GoRogers, then press you options button and select New APN, put in Name- Rogers, Apn- rogers-core-appl1.apn, then save and you 3g access will be once more. Hope I helped, have a cheeky day
EDIT: I forgot to mention that this is only on the rogers network, sorry..
Edit: if core-rogers-appl1.apn didnt work call rogers to refresh network.

Faster, simpler and incomplete. You're missing the MMS settings.
Just in case someone looks in here and doesn't look anywhere else, these are the settings:
Code:
Rogers Internet
rogers-core-appl1.apn

After rooted to Build Number R2BA023, my 3G was not working.
So here is what i did ... by common sense (NO DISRESPECTED TO ANYONE).
Restart the x10i > goto into setting > Wirless controls > Network operators > Select automatically > then Auto internet settings > choose your operator (ie vodafone contract, PAYG etc).
Then my 3g is working .... easy, no fucing about with setting or inputting stuffs.
Oh yes, I am on vodafone contract with UK network. Dont know if this will work in different region.
Let us know.

Glad to hear you got yours working Not sure if you noticed though, this post pertains to Rogers and the x10a in Canada. Sometimes the option to automatically get the settings fails due to the fact we're using a generic ROM.

the last part is very true.
with the auto-settings my 3g was slow and either than browsing no other internet function would work. i used the settings for 3g for rogers i found on the internet and everything works, and fast and now the market works on 3g(couldn't get it to work on 3g with the auto-settings).
dam this is a good fix!
is there a difference between entering rogers-core-appl1.apn and internet.com for Rogers apn in Canada?
internet.com just allows data to work, while the core-appl1 apn allows both data and mms to work.
the auto select apn feature sets up rogers phones with the goam.com access point, not internet.com or appl1. not sure what the difference is but the goam.com only seems to allow the browser to work. might be for those plans that allow unlimited mobile web surfing for cheap price?

until last week i too was adding both the internet.com and media.com apn manually, but it is a lot less work just adding the combined apn, especially when flashing back and forth, and back and forth again, with different roms.
you definitely do not want to use an android device without a data account, so if you have access to data but no data plan you could be setting yourself up for a huge bill!!
I'm not sure if this is just me or what... but ever since I have rooted, rogers My Account app wont show my data usage. It says 0mb used, when clearly I've used it way more... even downloaded apps using 3g from the market. I used the internet.com apn. Also it doesn't display my data usage on the rogers site either.. it says 0mb again. I can see all my minutes that I've used for voice and my texts but data sais nothing used. Am I somehow spoofing my data usage to rogers? I'm confused.

Good question. Will have to wait until my invoice is released in order to see how and if they are calculating my bandwidth as I am having the same issue. My invoice comes out tomorrow.
Edit: If it turns out it truly is this easy to game Rogers data usage... lets just keep it our little secret.

Second, Adfree was always there, but now (at least for me) it is working on the Atrix.
Whenever possible -> Support your Developers!!!
(also while this fix is intended to be safe, I'm not responsible if you mess up your phone)
</disclaimer>
What You'll Need:
(All available in the Android Market for free)
Adfree
CacheMate for Root Users
Cache Cleaner NG
Background:
I have a Bell phone with a AT&T SIM. On my phone, Adfree only works with WiFi and does not work on my Data Connection.
This fix is intended to work on BOTH WiFi and Data. --> I know others have posted about this same issue happening to them as well.
This should hopefully work for both Bell and AT&T users.
Actual Instructions:
In my APN's (Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names) I have the following AT&T settings: (this will be different for Bell)
AT&T US (Default selected)
AT&T US HSDPA (More on this one later)
AT&T US Tether
AT&T US MMS
--> On my phone, whenever I use the default "AT&T US" setting, ads will always show up.
1.) First things first, create your Custom APN so you can access data and still block ads.
AT&T User APN Settings
Bell User APN Settings
Make sure you SAVE your settings after you type them in.
2.) Select "AT&T US HSDPA" (This will be different for Bell, but choose the "HSDPA" setting)
When you choose this setting, it basically puts your phone into airplane mode. You have a connection, but you can't access the internet.
3.) (may be unnecessary, but do this anyway) Open up an app that has ads with the HSDPA setting still being used. Ads should be currently blocked.
4.) With the "HSPDA" setting still being used, clear your cache by first running
"CacheMate for Root Users", then run "Cache Cleaner NG".
5.) Reboot your phone with HSPDA still selected.
6.) After your phone is rebooted, go into your APN list and choose your custom APN that you made in step 1.
Give it a try, you should hopefully be blocking ads in most of your apps and also in your browser...
Hopefully this workaround works for BOTH carrier phones!...
Can't you just use the custom hosts file that is included in Gladiatrix, etc? It blocks all the ads on my Atrix.

Tried the custom hosts route already, and it didn't work. Basically the Default APN is the issue, and overwrites any hosts file in there. Just a strange issue that was never a problem on my other Android devices.

Never took it that way at all.
The custom hosts file placement, "should make sense", (I've done it successfully with my other phones) but then again some things with the Atrix just "doesn't make sense".
Anywhoo... I'm just glad to finally get this problem resolved. This issue was almost my dealbreaker for a while, and has bought me a little bit more time. Hopefully Bell can finally give us an update or two already...
You said the ATT HSPA APN or whatever basically puts your phone in Airplane mode? I've been on that APN since I got the phone, and everything has seemed to work properly... ?
Sorry, this is sort of unrelated to the Adfree app (which I'll gladly try later!! I cant' seem to get rid of ads either). I just noticed that and thought it was weird lol...

Well, I'll have to report back later. I seem to be having a data connection issue ( which I am sure is weather related ). My brain is starting to think that this won't work for me anyway. I think that this might be a Bell sim issue. I also think that by you cleaning out your cache and removing all traces of Bell ( APN-wise ) that solved the problem for you. we'll see what happens when I get my data back.
Well the skies cleared and data returned ( I am a bit rural ). No luck, ads remain.
Until yesterday ADFREE was blocking all ads. After the upgrade stopped. The ads are appearing as if nothing block then.
This occurs in both wifi and 3G (Tim - Brazil)
Any solution ?
AT&T US HSDPA is my default APN as well. It was the one selected when I first turned on my phone.
I was trying to input the correct AT&T APN's in my X10 and so I looked on my wifes phone (hers is identical to mine) and I found that she didn't have any APNS listed either!
My question is; what purpose do APN's serve and how can we be going along perfectly without them?
On official AT&T Firmware I believe that it is automatic. You have an APN, or you wouldn't be able to access data. Sort of like your Internet Provider at your home.
So have apns but just can't see them?
I noticed that after I input them, I started getting the "H" and the up/down arrows...this wasn't there before when it was blank...it was just a little antenna icon...
they are like login name and passwords to different Providers servers.

The little antenna icon is bluetooth. You do understand that the APN is needed for data and Internet, not for Wifi, sms, phone calls, camera, etc.
You have an "H" now because the APN settings you input. You are now on the HSPA (3.5G) network and can use your data plan. You could also see an "E" for Edge or 2G, or 3G for 3G network. If you don't have one of those symbols, then you probably can't access the internet, not including when using Wifi.
Just to be clear: I'm referring to the:
settings> wireless>mobile networks>access point names.
There was nothing in their before...and I typed some things in that I found on the forum for ATT...
How could my phone work fine if there is nothing in this list?
Also....like I said; after I put in the ATT information...all of a sudden I got an "H" with the upload/download arrow indicators where previously there was none except a "signal" looking icon next to the wireless bars.

Use wifi at home or at Hotspots. Wifi is usually faster and it's free. Use H data when on the road, but it costs money for data. Especially if you don't have an unlimited data plan.
Btw, you shouldn't have to manually enter the APN Settings. Just follow path settings / Sony Ericsson / Auto search for internet settings.

Wow...everything working now...I had somehow gotten ahold of a stock wpa_supplicant file....I replaced it with the "ad-hoc-friendly" one from the transformer thread and now I can connect.
My APNS are happy, I'm happy, barnacle is happy....thanks very much for the help.
My company has contract with the my network provider, so we have a special APN that connects to a company network. We have the usual public internet APN too.
I usually use public internet, but after a time the company APN becomes active. If I switch off mobile data and on again, than the public internet starts working. I don't have to change the APN in the settings.
If I start wifi hotspot, than it switches off and on the mobile data and it is switched on with company APN.
Usually every time I want to use internet I have to switch mobile data on and off.
If I delete the company APN, than APN starts working well.
I believe that there is a "default" APN set somewhere and it activates.
I have factory 2.3 on a HTC desire Z. With 2.2 I did not have this problem.

I can't use it. I've installed it, but it list hundreds of APN-s to select. It takes minutes to scroll down to "V" and there is a lot of "Vodafone Internet", I can't find out what is mine.
It is strange, because most people rates it with 5 starts. Maybe it is some HTC or Vodafone specific stuff?
