[Q] Why should I partition my SD card? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have flashed CM7 & now I am wondering, is there any reason to partiton SD card. If yes, then what is the recommended partiton size & an app for partiotioning. I have a 2 GB card. Also, will the card will be recognized by PC if I turn mass storage ON.

Been wondering the same thing. I personally have been flashing different ROMs, Kernels, etc for some time now and I've never bothered to do it, and I've never had trouble. From my understanding I think it helps with using apps2sd instead of in system memory, I'm not sure about this at all though. However, I've personally never needed to do this, my phone's memory has been sufficient for me.
I will say never having done this before, and never using a titanium backup or mybackup root, I've had absolutely no trouble with my various roms performance, battery life, what have you. I'm sure if anyone else responds I'll get chewed out for being a noob about this but it is what it is. I keep everything backed up on the good ole computer.

For the average user, no, there is no reason to partition the SD card.

sd card partitions is used to increase the internal storage. applied with some script.
very useful for device with low internal memory.

App2SD: Duplicate SD Card

Hi,
I am running Cyanogen 6.1 with APP2SD running, and have an 8GB SD Card with apps installed on it. I recently bought a new 16GB SD Card and was wondering how I duplicate the contents of my 8GB SD Card to the 16GB SD Card.
Any ideas would be VERY helpful.
I never tried, but I think it should be enough if you copy contents from the old one to the new one using a computer.
Sent from my HTC Hero
Unless you are using the native Froyo Apps-to-SD and not the old solution, then you can't just copy the files on a computer. Using the old system the apps are stored on a completely separated partition to what is shown when you mount your SD Card.
You can probably access that partition if you are using Linux, but having never used the old Apps2SD I can't check it myself.
I thought that might be the case. Linux laptop here I come!!
I recently bought a 16GB card and my Hero started to lag and restart SENSE randomly
Please reply to know if you have this issue
Hi,
I haven't put the 16GB in yet, as I have Apps installed to my 8GB SD Card and didn't know what to do (good job I have a linux based laptop really).
Sadly (not for me, but you know what I mean...) my ROM doesn't have SENSE. I am running CyanogenMOD 6.1.0.
What ROM are you running, I may know what the issue is?

I am running the villainrom12 with sense and i have overclocked it to 352/652
I'm such a dumbass... what "class" is the SD Card? And which elements of the ROM are laggy?
I noticed that this is a 2.1 ROM...

I have a class4 memory card, and when i am launching some apps htc sense just force closes and the app i wanted to open just quits, after it is happened several times, htc senses starts to force close again and again until phone starts to lag and then hangs up.
From what I understand, VillainROM12 is a SENSE 2.1 ROM. I can't understand why this would lag, other than the implementation of SENSE isn't the patched version with the LAG fix. Early versions of SENSE were terrible and HTC had to release a patch to fix the lag issues.
The force close issue could either be down to the app timing out or something isn't installed properly. I can't really tell without installing VillainROM on my phone (I have CyanogenMOD 6.1 which, in my opinion, is flawless). My ROM isn't sense orientated, it uses apps like Launcher Pro plus (I think it comes with ADW.Launcher by default) instead of sense. ADW does have a theme pack to make it look like HTCs SENSE app.
I would suggest a couple of things;
Check available RAM
Back up your SD Card and reformat it as follows;
EXT2 = 512MB (You can use more, but you shouldn't need to)
(DO NOT use EXT3 or EXT4, these partition types are kernel dependent, and will lower the life of your card, they are intended for large partitions of like 50GB upwards)
SWAP = 0MB
FAT = The rest
I use AmonRA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which has a very useful partition SD card feature, better than ClockworkMods anyway (Evertime I partitioned a card in ClockworkMOD the phone refused to boot). Unfortunately if you have any apps installed to the SD card you may lose them unless you move them back to the phone (If you go Settings > Applications then click on "On SD Card" this will give you a list of "moved" apps).
Again, if you HAVEN'T got any apps on the SD card this could be the problem, as you are using ALL your phones RAM to store apps in, so like a PC running low on memory, no RAM means poor performance.
Try checking available resources before re-partitioning your SD Card. If you can't see what memory is available to you, try an app ion the market place called App 2 SD Free by Sam Lu, it's free, and gives you a readout of exactly what memory is being used (it also gives you a list of apps you CAN move to the SD card). I'd use it for diagnostics for now, as I don't know if VillainROM12 comes with APP2SD installed by default.
Try these out and let me know how you get on. PLEASE make a nandroid backup first, this CAN restore your SDCARD if the partition goes wrong.
Please be advised that I take no responsibility for any issues that may occur. I have performed all these tasks on my HTC Hero with no problems though.
I have tried these things but nothing helped. I have done everything the same with same type 8GB card and there was no problem, i think that HERO just cant handle 16GB but HTC says that it can support up to 32GB.

I can't really comment until I format my 16GB car and put it in (should be arriving this morning). Have you thought about another ROM? SENSE is notorious for causing lag. The guys at VillainROM also make FroydVillain (I think the latest version is 1.7.2). This doesn't have SENSE though, and you will need to backup your setting/messages/apps/and everything else first.
Backing up settings is slightly different to a nandroid. I recommend Backup Everything, as you can select what you want to back up. The only problem is you usually need to re-download the app on your new ROM to restore stuff, even if you backup apps too.
Update: Take a look at this thread for other ROMs

[Q] CWM backup location, can it be changed to the internal storage?

This might be a stupid question, but better to ask then regret it when the time comes. I recently purchased a 32 GB Duracell class 4 sd card, I don't really trust the thing as much as I should, it acts strange at times when it comes to apps running off of it and such. Anyways the question is when you preform a nandroid backup with CWM it auto defaults to the backup directory within the CWM folder on the SD card. Is there a way to change the location of this folder to the internal storage on the device itself? Or when it comes time to restore a backup choose your own location? I trust the phones storage so much more then this sketch SD card.
Thanks for the assistance.
Take out the card when you wanna back up b restore without the external directory it should switch to internal

[Q] CM10/Win7 - How do I get USB storage to show external SD (instead of internal)?

I've installed HTC sync and Android/Java and have my EVO4gLTE rooted. I'm running Decks CM10 and love the interface. The problem is that when I turn on USB storage, only the internal SD card shows on my PC. When I would run stock Sense, it would show the external card.
I would much prefer to see the external card without having to physically remove it or copy to it using a file manager. TWRP has the option to mount internal or external SD's, and Sense gives several options when the device is connected to the PC.
I've searched multiple times and have yet to find an answer to this.
Big thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work. It only shows the internal SD card and not the external one.
Doesnt cm10 see sd as external instead of sd2? I know there was a mod to switch it around to flip it around so it sees the sd2 as sd(1).
Look in development section.
I thought the mount point swap was already included in the newer builds

Thanks very much for responding! I was wondering about two things, though:
1) will this script reverse the cards as seen only by the PC during USB mounting, or will they be reversed to the internal apps as well? In other words, will everything that was looking for something on SD0 not find it because it's now seen on SD1?
2) will this affect my external SD card such that I should back it up and/or format it beforehand? I know I should back it up anyway, but I was just wanting to know what to expect.
I really appreciate your help and input.

It will use your service card. As internal. I switched back and forth all the time from Cm10 to sense. There are swap point mode for sense too. Since I always use my 64gb for internal sd

I tried it and it does indeed swap the drives. That was excellent work! I will probably run the script again the next time I do a full reset, since several of my apps will need to have their settings changed to recognize that drive as their location drive. By the way, do you have a script to swap the drives back?
I'm a little surprised, though, that considering how configurable CM10 is, that the ability to choose which drive is mounted to show as USB storage is not also configurable. With my Xoom, both drives show up when the device is connected to the PC.
Thanks again

[Q] What to do if I lost access to my internal storage as well as sd card

Hi, new guy with english problems here, be gentle
So basically I lost access to any kind of storage on my SGS2 running CM10.1. Here's what happened. I was using internal and sd for a long time, then, as I needed my SDHC elsewhere i removed it. Nothing was lost as all data was stored internally. BUT. After formatting SD in FAT32 and putting it back everything crashed. Apps are refusing to work, demanding an SD card. Files Manager says that folder was lost. All of them. First thing I wanted to do was to flash CM once again, a newer NB but my PC does not read internal storage either, and putting it in sd doesn't do me any good as cwm doesn't see it also. CM can access internal, so i flashed the same version of CM once again - the only one i got there. Nothing changed. I'm a bit lost and seek any advice
U checked if u really format it with Fat32?

Sure. Also I formatted it with SDFormatter, thanks to this CWM can mount it and format by itself, but OS does not respond anyway

[Q] Only acces on sd-card thru usb-mass storage

Hi there,
I have a HTC wildfire [buzz] -s off, I rooted it, got cm7 on it. Now the problem is, the SD-card worked perfectly, and after a while the phone doesn't recognize my SD-card anymore. At some point it eats 4g away from my partitionated 8g SD. Then suddenly i have no SD at all anymore atleast on software cm7 running, however when I boot into recoverymode i can only have acces to that sd card while in usb mass storage device thru my pc. But can't install any apps since I was gonna install 'gapps' when i noticed SD was not recognized by cm7.... I formated mulitple times using sd-format and minitool partion a few times with different partitions one fat-32 other ext2. now 4g formatted just fat 32.
Can anybody give me a work around? I'm fairly new to rooting. So keep it a bit simple if possible.
Thanks and kind regards.
