I got the Aria about a month ago, and from day one i noticed my signal kinda sucks. I get full Edge, but 3G and now H (because of root/Lib Froyo) has just never been good. I came from a Blackberry Bold 9000, and it had FULL 3G at home and work. Now the same spots are pretty crappy so its not the location. Anyone else see this or have a solution?
I live in the boonies. I just toggle edge when I'm home due to wifi and 3g when I'm in town.

ive been doing that, but its aggrivating when I KNOW the signal is there, but the phone just isnt picking it up.
Dont everybody respond at once. My Edge is even weak. I might return the phone for another aria. No one else experience this?
Since I flashed FR006, I've noticed my battery has been quick to drain. Last night at work, I noticed my network changed several times, H, G, and E. I don't remember any issues when I was on R012. I intend to revert to R012 while at work tonight to see if there is improvement.
no one on any forums seems to be having this issue, im going to try and return the phone to see if that takes care of it.

It's Antennaegate!
On a serious note, I've never had signal issues here.
Maybe check the two gold tabs on the battery cover to be sure they are making contact with the phone.
I imagine the phone came from an AT&T store? There are many Arias on eBay that have replacement battery covers, and replacements with integrated antennas are hard to come by. Without the OEM battery cover my phone never gets 3g...

Yeah, the antenna relies on the battery cover, which has part of the antenna in it via a pair of metal contacts.

yeah i know. they are making good contact.
Not sure if you are trying to determine if the problem is your area or your phone, but you could use something like "cellumap" to determine how your coverage at home compares to your coverage at work/where ever...

no, i know its in the phone. my wifes BB 9000 has -71 dbm while sitting next to mine with -100 dbm
Gotcha. I guess the last thing to try is exchanging the phone, or finding a friend with an Aria to come compare signal side-by-side. Having come from a BB 9000 myself, I have not noticed any differences in signal quality/reception, but if I recall correctly the 9000's antennas are larger and more spread apart.
Same thing here, never once have I gotten a 3G connection. It's always Edge even though I know there's a 3G in my area. Frustrating.
I use aria. Came from iPhone. I actually get better service now in same area
If you rooted your phone and exchange it they will frown on that lol

My fiance and I both got thunderbolts a few months ago. My phone keeps losing the network connection. The 3G icon completely disappears from the status bar but the signal bars remain and have a few bars of signal. If I try to do anything when the phone is like this I get a no network connection error. Mine does this about every 10 minutes for about 5 seconds. i can have my phone laying right beside hers on the table and hers holds solid 3G and mine doesnt.
I have called verizon tech support 2 times about this and the second time they want to open a trouble ticket because they think its an issue with the network. I think I have a bad phone and would just like them to replace it. Anyone else seen this happen and can shed some light on it?
What kind of battery cover do you have? Only reason I ask is that the actual antenna for 3g/4g is on the battery cover itself.
You could get a signal boost if you put aluminum foil in your battery cover, not covering the camera holes of course. The 2 gold connections on the top of your phone in the back are the connectors for the antenna on the back cover. So by putting aluminum foil on the cover you are basically extending the antenna or if you put aluminum on the gold it might bridge a small gap that is preventing conductivity between the antenna and the contacts.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link, but I already checked that stuff. I'm really thinking I have a faulty device. My battery cover is the stock one and is on the phone tightly, and I even swapped my battery cover with my fiances. I even tried slightly bending the antenna contacts up so they make better contact and still have the same problem. The last thing I can think of is that I could have a bad sim card. 4G works fine when I'm in a 4G area though. I don't get why verizon thinks it is my line.
I've heard of one other person whos line is bad no matter what phone they use and that's slayers (CM7) wife.

First the bars are for voice so you can lose 3g and still have cell service. 2nd have you tried the app LTE onoff? If you put it on the option for cdma auto prl it should bring the signal in. If that doesn't help I would take it to Verizon.

I lose 3G and 1X both. I can't call or get data when this happens. I still have bars but the 3G/1X icons are non-existent on the status bar. And yeah I have the radio tools option in my wireless settings menu and I have toggled back and forth with no change. My phone is rooted and I've tried several radio combos and also many different roms with the same problem. I have even RUU'd the phone back to 100% stock with the same problem.
I'm almost tempted to go back to my incredible to see if it happens on it. I never had this issue until I got the thunderbolt.
I am on vacation this week and my 3g disappeared in the middle of a hotspot session yesterday. I spent all afternoon flashing, clearing, etc, and my ultimate solution is the one below from android central. I am certain this is a Vzw doing something to the towers in the area as my Xoom, my wife's iPhone, and her iPad2 all kept 3g the entire time.
This should be added to OP.
If the link fails Google "Thunderbolt 3g problems". It will be the first result.

Here is the entire article to give proper credit.
QUOTED FROM ANDROID CENTRAL:
"We'd hoped to give Verizon's network a couple more days to settle before breaking this one on you, but these are drastic times, folks. See, more than a few of you have had issues with getting 3G data on the HTC ThunderBolt when you're in a non-4G area. Nope, doesn't make much sense. But landle in the Android Central Forums has done a nice job explaining how the TB uses the eHPRD 3G network to speed the handoff between 3G and 4G data. Problem is, it ain't working for a lot of people. Good news is there's a fix --no hard resets (which until now had been the recommended fix), human sacrifice or other unpleasantness. Here's what you need to do:
Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." You want "Edit Mode."
You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A." Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications." That's it. You're done.
The phone will reboot (don't worry, you're not losing any data here), and things should, you know, actually work. As landale points out, you'll want to change this setting back once Verizon gets its network sorted out. But in the meantime, enjoy your, erm, new 3G! [Android Central Forums] Thanks, landale!"

Thanks. I saw this article before, but if I do this my phone won't switch to 4G when I go into a 4G area right?
I still don't get why my phone does this an my fiances doesn't. It is 99% likely that we are on the same tower too.
EDIT: Just tried the fix from the article posted above and still having the same problem.
I am sorry to have gotten your hopes up. I should have read closer, I took it that you both had the issue. Plain as day on a reread though.
Had it worked I think your 4G would have been busted.
I added some more details to my issue when I reposted in another thread. Next time you lose 3g try checking for software updates to see if it pulls the 3g back on.

Is the *228 radio update method still valid for the Tbolt? I'm assuming if you were on the phone with Verizon they would have had you do that if it is. But just throwing this out there in case we are just overlooking the obvious.
Also added my question to the post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15256013#post15256013
@sabbotage
If you are on stock rom & radio, then you either have a bad sim card or a defective phone. Go to verizon & swap sim cards. If you still have problems, exchange the phone.

nope it isn't, Verizon pushed a new PRL to my phone because I was having 4G issues (that was their solution?). didn't fix anything. and my 3G icon disappears once a day for a few seconds.
I'm risking starting up another signal strength thread, but I figured this info was useful for anyone looking to return their Evo 3D or any other phone in Massachusetts.
I finally decided I had better try swapping out my Evo 3D at Best Buy in case there was something wrong with the radio. Reception in Eastern Massachusetts has been horrible with it. Far worse than my Moment or my wife's Epic.
When I tried to swap the phone out, they told me I owed $22 in taxes. Turns out that July 1st, Massachusetts taxes you on the full $699 and not the price you pay. So if you bought on the 24th and replace in store after July 1st, there is nothing Best Buy can do to avoid the tax.
I decided to switch back to the original phone because after loading a signal dbm widget onto both phones and the reps' personal evo 3d, they all had similarly crappy signals.
A few questions though:
1) It doesn't seem like signal is always bad. Just much more prone to dropping out. Anyone else experienced this?
2) Is it possible that the case is killing the signal? I have the platinum series case from best buy which looks slick but if it's killing the signal I'll get rid of it.
3) I noticed that bluetooth seems to have a significant negative effect on the dbm of the phone signal. Is this normal for a phone, bad design, bad luck or chance?
4) I struggle to get 4G to stay connected in Boston. It loses the connection then goes into 4G! mode and refuses to connect for more than a few seconds. Is this normal?
5) To what extent can HTC improve signal performance by software updates? Samsung was able to do this for the Moment, but they were starting with a lemon of a phone to begin with...
Anyway, bad signal or not, if you are messing around with phones in Massachusetts, be sure to sneak over the border to New Hampshire before returning it or you'll piss away $20+.
I'm having signal issues too gets really annoying esp with 4g hope its just a bug that can be fixed
I am in the worcester area and my signal is terrible everywhere I go. With my 4g it was fine, 3d absolutely sucks. I am on my second phone now and both have been horrible. I have been in the city where I used to have great signal but get nothing now. I also had no signal on the mass pike in auburn and was roaming.

I noticed today, after changing the roaming mode from automatic to sprint only, that I was dropping in and out of service every few minutes. This had never happened previously as I always have a consistent signal in this area both with the Evo3D as well as the Evo4G. I am hoping a radio update will fix this...
I'll try it this week when I am in New York City and see if it improves. Maybe it just isn't using all the towers in this area or something.
I had the same exact problem with mine but then i loaded a custom prl (00001) and now it's rock solid signal and i haven't roamed yet. Highly recommend by me.

My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
I live Cape Cod, and drive all over MA and RI, and my signal and 3G is horrible. I exchanged mine for a new one and no change in service. My old Evo 4G got 120 to 140 kbs and this one gets 22 to 70, occasionally 94... Something is wrong with the phone, not the service... I may just buy another Evo 4G from eBay since I gave mine to my nephew, and keep this phone until they find a fix...

Framingham
I'm in Framingham right now, getting 2 bars on the 4g meter. Speedtest shows 7617 down and 1435 up.
3G sucks for me too. It's not quite 'deal breaker' material, but combined with some other pet peeves of mine I'm leaning towards bringing it back and waiting for the SGS2....cuz if I'm going to have a **** radio I might as well have an unlocked bootloader and CM8 guaranteed.
Well here in Wisconsin I've been getting pretty consistent signals and 3g. But about 2 hours ago everything failed. Haven't had 3g since and I either have 0 bars or I'm roaming, usually with still only a bar or two. Can somebody think of a cause for this because I'm out of ideas.

Have been having issues here in NE MA with horrible 3g, GPS dropping too often and a bad phone signal to the point of not being able to make or receive calls in areas that are marginal...but areas where my EVO always showed 2 bars and worked fine.
In what I would call "strong" signal areas, still had GPS and 3G issues no matter what. What I found with the phone signal is that in these areas, mit works fine, although it fluctuates every few seconds from a full set of bars, to 2 or 0 and then jumps back up again....constantly.
In the "marginal signal" areas where my EVO 4G worked fine and always showed 2 bars, the 3D shows none and won't make or receive a call. What is most perplexing is that even though it is set to "automatic" on the networks, it is not roaming to Verizon...and my buddy taking the ride with me had a full boat signal on his Verizon phone.
I was totally unable to get on the internet in these areas, although I could still send a text.
I don't get it???
Sprint re-provisioned the phone twice, and today a service center wiped and reloaded everything and also claims to have installed a "fifth update" which my phone never got.
My tests were done post upgrade and it did NOTHING to fix these issues.
With your fifth update did you check to see if you had S-OFF? lol
I just sent a reply back to HTC regarding Bluetooth and Roaming data issues and GPS issues... I await their response... However, I may be returning it and going to some other device.
I've found my old Evo3D, and the exchanged one to show 0 bars in places the Evo4G showed 2-3 bars. For the first time in my life, thanks to the Evo3D, I've had a dropped call, and it was in a place the Evo4G gets 2 bars and perfect voice.
Yeah, today at work I missed 3 calls and couldn't read XDA in the bathroom. That was the final straw. I reactivated my 4G, did some tests...and...well...the 3D has gone back home. Perhaps just for now. The 3G radio on that thing sucks. Maybe a radio update will fix it, but I'm not so sure.
Since I'm impatient and have kinda decided to go the Nexus rout from now on I stopped by the sprint store afterwards and did some signal tests with the NexusS4G--which has known 3G reception issues. Well, it had identical bars...that was a good sign, so I dug in a little deeper and it had nearly identical reception as my E4G.
The .3" of screen size will be missed, and it'll be hard to get used to the light weight...but I think tomorrow I'm gunna buy it. Sure, no SD slot, but, 16gb should be pretty damned good...I never did replace my 8gb card, though I did bump the limit a lot. I'm also sure the camera is way better...
...or I'll just wait for the SGS2. I'm not so antsy to get a new phone now after anticipating one so hard and being mostly disappointed. It's funny, the one thing I was the most critical of beforehand ended up being the only thing I'll really miss...the 3D. Lol to that.
Unfortunately I did a stupid thing and traded my EVO 4G in when I "upgraded" to the 3D.
I tried to get Sprint to do a swap....take back the 3D, take away the $150 trade in credit and give me a new or used EVO 4G for the time being and they absolutely refuse to do it without using up my upgrade to get back what I traded in.
Looks like will deal with this phone and return it on day 29, activate my BB Tour (YUCK) and live with that till something reliable comes out hopefully at the end of July or more likely in August.
This sucks.
I am having nearly similar issues. I am dropping calls in area's that have 4-5 bars. I look and when it reconnects it will be down to 0 signal and then back up 4-6 bars. Really odd.
Sad thing is I am coming from ATT and I only have till early next week to decide to stay with sprint or not.
Ohh decisions... not fun and not a good sprint evaluation.
Yeah, I really hope this is something that they can tweak with a radio update. My old Hero got a lot better reception than my Evo 3D.

I can assure you it is not Sprint...it's the phone. I had the same/similar with my 3D...but never with the 4G.
Download Open Signal Maps. It will show you what tower you're connected to. I noticed something similar with my phone (the signal bars fluctuating). I checked Open Signal and lo-and-behold, my phone was tower jumping between 5 different towers in my area... I didn't even know I had 5 different towers in my area.
Ideally, your phone should lock on to the strongest signal in your area and not jump from strong signal to weak signal to slightly-less-weak signal, to strong again... Also, check out this thread:
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/361044-official-solution-3g-issues-3d.html
This problem doesn't affect everybody. For instance, my brother got a 3d the same day I did, and he's consistently getting 500-700 kbs d/l in the same places I'm getting 11 kbs d/l.

Do ##786# (or 768, not sure). Then click menu key and due a reset. This will also factory reset your device unfortunately. But I was having eh same problems, getting horrid 3gs speeds of around 50 kps. Once I did this my evo3d is constantly getting better 3g speeds than the 4 other evos in my family.
For some reason a lot of the evo 3d did not get the data set up right on one end or another. This seems to fix it.
Looking at that link now. Yes I've had open signal maps installed and I too have noticed that I am jumping between towers "a lot" say every 10-15 seconds or so. And that can be just sitting still in a parking lot and dropping calls :-( Will take a look and glad to hear that it is more with the phone than the actual network. I may have to downgrade to the 4G or NS4G.

Anybody confirm that this works? My girlfriend's 3D gets a lot worse signal than mine. I'd definitely try this but only if it might actually work. She really doesn't like the factory resets because she has to redo all of her preferences.
Her's is so much more worse than mine that we've been thinking about getting it replaced.

##786# will do a factory reset on your phone. ##72786# will do a "Data Only" reset (i.e. you don't lose any installed apps). I would try that before ##786#. You will need your MSL for both. I have done both. Unfortunately, in my case, the 3g improved for only a couple of hours and then it went back to tower jumping both times. I now have an appointment with the sprint store to replace my 3d later this evening.

#786## worked to fix my 3G speeds. I was consistently getting under 100 Kbps up and down before walking through this procedure with Sprint a week ago. Since then, latency has gone down and speeds have improved significantly.
It did not fix persistent problems with GPS not locking and having poor signal reception compared to the 4G. Between these issues, overheating and the locked bootloader, I am pretty close to returning this phone (although I like most other aspects of it).
Looks as though the Photon 4G cleared the FCC today.
I think I will live with the 3d a bit longer just in case they come out with some miraculous software fix, otherwise return it, activate the BB until the Photon comes out.
Hopefully, for where I live and work at least it will have much better reception.
That's strange that a few of you guys have had every issue that was reported in some of those awful reviews. I've actually found my 3D has the exact same signal as the 4G sitting right next to it. It also recognizes changes in signal faster than the 4G. I must have been lucky to get one with no issues.

I don't believe that there is anything wrong with the phone itself, however I do believe that there was a bad batch of radios installed on some of the 3vo's. Like I said, my brother's 3vo is working just fine while mine seems to be a lemon.
Just curious how reception is for others. As you can see in the pic, I'm in a good area, but it drops constantly. It will show, 6 bars, then drop to none, then 2, then none, then 6 and so on. Even sitting next to my airwaves it does this. A friend of mine has the same issues on his s3. Either we have 2 defective phones or sprint sucks. This phone is great but not sure what's up with my reception. It goes into roaming in town near my sprint store.
I'm on sprint running a un-rooted stock rom.
Note this is at the same location for this pic and notice how it goes from green to brown to none. Fluctuates way to much for me being at work in the same spot

Does call quality or data speed drop too? I read somewhere that the S3 bar indicator scales differently and can not be compared side by side with a different model phone.
Yes really hope you do not have a defective phone and maybe this is a T-Mobile issue.. I live in a very rural area and my Verizon tower is 20 miles away, let's hope this is not the tip of the iceberg on reception for the G3.
So no one has bad reception with this phone? Guess I'll be getting rid of this phone

Is it dropping calls, or data, or are you just overreacting to a few miscolored bars? I mean, certain spots are going to go into roaming; Sprint isn't everywhere. Does another phone go into roaming at the same spot?
Mine seems to lose signal pretty often. It'll go from full strength or a few bars to the no signal circle with a line through it. Haven't been able to pinpoint why yet.
I will say this signal is not as strong as my iPhone 4s (ATT). I was downtown last night in a Bar. I normally text while I am in there, I could not text last night on my SIII, I get no signal inside. On my iPhone i always could text. Sucks when I'm trying to have girls meet me...
That looks like every Sprint phone I've ever had, to be honest. Mine always do that and I have no idea why. lol
It will roam at the sprint store. Sprint reps can't explain it and I get the "we have never seen this issue before" speech. But I'm going to swap it out. The screen is yellow anyways.
I also roam at home with an airwave. Never had that issue with my evo 3d or photon.
The antenna on this phone can't be that bad can they? I know Sammy has a reputation for horrible reception.
And it does drop calls and texts will have to be resent

I manage to roam at least 5 times a day. On my moment (SPH M900) Ive barely ever roamed. Also texts seem to fail at sending quite a bit.

My ATT S3 connects just fine! Some buildings it doesn't like but thats pretty normal. Over all its MUCH better than my old Sprint service. 5-7meg down with HSPA+!
Just got my phone today (att) and signal levels seem low when I look a the status bar. for both wifi and 4g. How do you display that screen from OP? I can't seem to find it.

It'd under battery setting. Then tap on the graph at the top. It will bring up that screen

mine is also horrible , just wait for sprints 4g lte
Same thing happens for me, the phone will drop the signal even when I'm on WiFi, never had this problem with the lte.

to look at your reception status, simply go to "battery" and then hit the "cell standby" bar in the list of battery usage
with Time on of 8h 37m 26s, time without signal is 26%
Mine is about 3-4 dbm lower than my Thunderbolt I have for work, but it displays 1 or 2 less "bars".
Sprint no-charge roaming
This won't fix your connectivity issues, but
In conversation with a Corporate Sprint Rep today, billing dept, I was informed that Sprint doesn't charge for roaming
in the domestic US. I didn't know this.
If phone goes into roaming, perhaps this lightens the impact?
I think this may have something to do with the antenna being on the bottom of the phone where your palm rests. Atleast thats how it is on my Tmo. If I hold the phone just on the top half or not holding it at all then I get more bars and more consistent. Soon as I hold it in particular with my left hand is when I lose signal bars. This only happens in an area where I'm only getting 2 bars.
I also had a sprint s3 (not active now) but never really checked the signal bar since I never lost connection.
