Hey guys! I am planning to install the CM7 ROM on my Droid X2. I want to back up my Applications and the application data and any other stuff so that I can restore those apps on CM7. But I heard some people are having trouble using Titanium Backup on CM7.
Are others having this issue too? And if this is indeed a big problem, what other application can I use to back up my apps and app data and restore them on CM7?
Thanks for you help in advance.
I recommend none

Then how do you backup and restore app data?
In the BSR recovery, you can do a Nandroid backup. Then, when you are ready to install those apps, you can get a couple of different apps to read from the nandroid backup:
Titanium Backup - But, if you have this, then just use it to backup your apps and data. But, it can restore nandroided programs and settings.
Yaffs Explorer - You can go into the nandroid backup and retrieve programs, settings and files from this and it's free.
I myself use Titanium Backup Pro to backup my programs and settings via the normal backup operations. But, I have used it to restore applications from a nandroid backup when I forgot to backup my settings via Titanium Backup before flashing. That's why I ALWAYS nandroid backup before I flash or SBF.
Titanium Backup, been using it for some time, never had an issue with it.

+1 to this...as long as you do NOT restore system data (ringtones, bluetooth pairings, remembered wifi networks, etc...) . User applications and application data has never caused me a problem going between ROMs.
Nandroid from recovery is the best and most accurate, in my opinion its way better than titanium because it actually makes a complete image of your current system and its free, never had any problems with it and it has saved me so many times...

Agreed for recovering from a mistake or installing something that didn't work. The OP was looking to be able to move to a different ROM without having to reinstall every app by hand. Nandroid won't help with that...

But, you can use various apps, like Titanium Backup and others, to reinstall the apps from a nandroid backup. Titanium Backup is really good.

I use Titanium Backup and have never had a problem with restoring my apps and app data on CM7 or MIUI. I think the people who have problems with it are using it to backup and restore their system data, which is not good when changing a ROM since the system data can be a little different from ROM to ROM. Use it for apps and app data only.
I agree with all that say Titanium Backup. I did have a problem with it freezing when it was in between reinstalling an app and switching to another when I ran the batch. However, this might have been me being impatient and trying to enjoy CM7 too soon. lol. Also you can restore from the nandroid backup with the paid version of Titanium Backup.
Rom toolbox automatically backs up apks for root users, no data though.
Titanium backup might be ur best bet
MIUI X2
I have had the freezing problem also but it has only done it with cm7. Reboot usually fixed it. With cm7 i find myself rebooting allot anyway for little glitches. Kinda like windows really just doesn't seem to want to run continuous for long periods of time.

With CM7, there are many small issues and annoyances for me.
I am going back to stock and maybe over to Eclipse.
Titanium: Frequent crashes, need data wipe to get it going for couple of my apps, (I NEVER restore system stuffs, just my apps).
Games: Some of them have random pauses, some of them have random crashes, 1 game won't work (Siegecraft) etc.
Apps: Sygic Navigation app does not work, Navigon works though, Gallery app re-starts all the time.
Phone calls: I am suspecting some calls are NOT coming through for me, my wife tells me that she has to call me 2-5 times to get through sometimes. I see some missed calls and get notifications, but I could SWEAR that the phone never rang.
Yes, this was my daily driver for couple of weeks, but I would not recommend it.
These issues (other than the phone calls) are minor and annoyance only, but when added all up, It doesn't contribute to good overall experience.
Once it gets few iterations of bug fixes, I will probably get back to it.

I use TiBu to backup my apps and data. However, don't use TiBu to restore system apps or data. That just causes problems. I create a "restore" group and put most of my apps in there and restore both the app and data. I also create a group for "apps only" and this just restores the app and not the data. Apps like Groupon I have had to go back and wiped their data to get them to work. If you don't have a bunch of apps (unlike me with 307 apps) I would recommend going through each app on it's own.
Ciao!
My Backup Pro has been very good to me. You can make data and app backsups that can me stored online aswell as on your phone's SD card.
Its also dummy-proof; you'll figure it out in ~15 minutes.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but search gives too many results to find what I'm looking for, and it seems that the procedure is phone- specific.
I've been a long time CleanROM user, finally decided to upgrade to ICS based ROM.
I did upgrade without wiping data and Sense didn't work at all. After wiping and reinstall everything worked, but of course all m data was gone. I restored "all system data" from backup, and it killed Sense again.
So, what subset of the system data can I safely restore? I need things like SMS and call logs, bluetooth and wifi pairings, user account info entered in apps and so on.

Restoring SMS, call logs, bluetooth and wifi pairings are all fine. I have found, as you did, when you restore all data it really buggers things up.
I use SMS Backup&Restore from the Play store. Works great the several years I have been flashing ROM's.
I'm looking at the pre-upgrade backup- it has 1164 files. Which ones should I include or exclude from restoring?
I think I found SMSes in com.htc.messagescs, but I can't search in each archive file.
Yea you shouldn't do an "all data restore" when switching roms, especially when going from GB to ICS. You should ONLY restore data from apps, never restore system/settings data. Since roms are made differently (again, especially when going from GB to ICS) restoring settings/system data will mess up the rom. So just restore data from the apps you want, backup/restore SMS with SMS Backup and Restore, and then just manually change your settings and set-up your home screens the way you want. It takes an extra few minutes, but it will save you the hassle of things not working how they should.
SMS and MMS are stored in [SMS/MMS/APN]Dialer Storage.

User account info within apps can usually be restored with restoring user data apps only. You will hardly ever restore "system apps". They are usually unique to the individual ROM, in my experience.

So, why do I need Titanium Backup, if I have to use a separate app to restore SMS? What do I do about the call logs? Are they part of the system or user app dataset?

The only thing I use TB for is to backup/restore apps and their data.
Call logs are located in "[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage". Not sure if it is system data or user data set.
Also, here is a good How-to on backing up SMS/MMS and Call logs. Have not had the chance to try it out myself. LINK

You CAN use it to restore sms, however that usually will also restore call history etc, which again, can cause you problems, especially when going from GB to ICS.
Thanks everyone.
I restored GB from nandroid and made 2 backups in different directories. One for user apps+ data, another one for system data. Wiped, installed an ICS ROM. Restored apps+data from the first backup. The results were mixed. Some apps restored with their settings intact, other ones lost all customization and account info.
Next I switched to the system backup and restored only data files (green in TB). Not all of them, only ones with the names that made sense. It gave me SMS and call logs, BT pairings, FB account. The list of WiFI APs was restored, but yheir keys passwords were not. None of the widgets came back. I had pretty time consuming setups with Beautiful Widgets and Circle Launcher and was hoping to continue using it.
It seems that there is no easy way to switch ROMs without some butt hurt.

Strange, it looks like some people here change ROMs on a daily basis, and I thought that the whole process of transferring the maximum possible amount of settings has been well researched and documented by now.

Not necessarily better I just prefer the ui more. Each has their own pros and cons. Tommytomatoe turned me onto it back in the OG days and I've never looked back. (that guy is a genius) I got MBP on sale for 2.99 and I think it's well worth it. I still use TB, just not as much...

I like to play around with ROMs and since the S3 is my shiny new toy, I like to explore all the different approaches to cooking ROMs. Currently I use Criskelo, but I find the Paranoid ROMs extremelyinteresting in the hybrid modes. However, with a nandroid backup and restore of /data my device is stuck in a boot loop. This is common, obviously, since more or less all ROMs recommend a full wipe.
As a Linux user I am used to installing different distributions on various partitions in a multi boot setup. I never touch my /home and I have never had any problems, due to the strict separation between /home and root partition.
What can I do to simulate the same behaviour an android, i.e. what backup programs can help me to keep all my user data intact, including SMS, phone call history, passwords etc.
Nanroid makes a backup as tar.gz, but I feel overwhelmed by the number of files contained in it and wouldn't know which ones to restore and which ones not. Why is it that something contained in /data affects anything outside user land space, that is /system and /boot?
Has anyone found a solution to the dilemma?

Titanium does the lot, just don't restore system data between different ROMs and be careful with app data as it can cause issues.

But that exactly was the question. How can I know which data actually makes the device boot loop? The resulting problems are the same, if a full backup of /data is made, no matter whether I do it via nandroid or TBP.

I tend to find a 2 step approach to restoring apps and data is required.
Assumng you`ve done a full wipe, (the holy trinity of Data/Cache/Dalvik) and you`ve flashed your ROM, and have made it to the desktop, and installed Titanium
1. Using the batch function,Do a mass restore of everything, but make sure the "app only" button is pressed.
2. Go back and do the same again, but this time deselect all, and select "data only" and go down the list and check only the vital apps who`s data you want restoring, stuff like call history, SMS logs, email, etc.The slimmer you keep this list, the less chance you will have of any issues..

Hm. Does this mean all users of the PA ROMs discard all their personal data and use their phone as a playstation? It doesn't delete any /data only app data. and PA doesn't like restoring app data from other roms.
Is there a way to backup and restore phone setting like wallpaper, passcode, etc and also is there a way to backup and restore email, gmail, Samsung, dropbox accounts so we dont have to always sign into everything after full wipe?
It might not be there... YET~~~~
what i've learnt after a lot of reading at the xda one can restore user apps + data but not system app should not be restored like in my case i flashed rr rom and mistskenly restored system apps of phone with data+ app option and it posed issues.
TBP as such will give warning that restoring system app+ data might pose issues so you have to avoid it simple
This may be a dumb question, but when/how would you use titanium backup? I've been reading threads, looking for a good first ROM, and I am surprised to see several of them (CM, AOKP, others) say NOT to restore data from a Titanium backup after installing their ROM.
Well... then... whats the point of Titanium Backup? If you cant restore the info, how/when would you use it?
Thanks for clarifying,
UB
I believe it's for when you have to do a sudden wipe or restore on your phone due to a technical issue with it. Changing out the roms I would imagine would have negative impacts on your phone.

Sent from the best phone ever. Yes, the Galaxy Note 2 | Beans 7 |
Most devs I have seen on threads will say it is ok for apps from the google store. Like angry birds, stuff like that.
It is the system apps, etc that cause issues.
I use it religiously to restore my purchased apps, etc.
yea i have been using titanium backup since the OG droid i only do market apps like the post above says. and i never let google restor anything when flashing a new rom. i would recommend if your new to TB just to do a batch backup before you go to flash a new rom thats what i do i used to do a schedual but stopped that.
on a side note i do back up my bluetooth pairings, wifi connections, and sms messages (but you have to be careful with sms if your going from one android version to another example : backing up 4.1.2 and restoring it on 4.2.1 may have ill effects)
It's best just to restore data for user apps, not the app and not system apps. By doing this you should never run into problems. Most of the times user apps won't cause problems if you restore the app on the same device with similar rom (touchwiz to touchwiz or AOSP to AOSP). When on the same device but different rom base (touchwiz to AOSP, AOSP to touchwiz) you'll see issues with some apps but not others. When going to a different phone there's a very high chance restoring any app will cause problems (data only is fine though). So the easiest way to avoid problems is to allow Google to restore your apps then go in and restore data. One system setting I haven't had problems with restoring (data only) is wifi, avoid restoring any other system apps or data. Also you should know that text messages backed up from touchwiz restore fine on other touchwiz roms, but may not have correct date and times, and vice versa. Also check out app extractor, it allows you to restore from your nandroid (free only allows 5 apps at a time, whereas titanium is one by one in the free version)
I appreciate the replies. Question on backing up just the data for my apps but not the apps themselves. I don't see an option for this in Titanium Backup. It seems to be giving me the option of user apps or user apps plus system apps. I don't see a user data only option. Am I missing something?

I usually do titanium backup for apps (all the white letter ones), and settings, bookmark, sms, call logs, widgets (selected green letter ones)....but no system apks (red letters). When you make these backups, you must remove all old backups.
I see lots of people restoring data or app backups after a clean ROM flash. Do you think this adds of the instability problems so many people have, while others have very few problems?
I have done it on five phones, countless ROMs and have never ever once had a single issue.
I could never ever NOT restore data.
It's like losing everything I ever did on the app [whether it be countless hours of Ski Safari, Angry Birds, etc]. However on apps like Facebook, twitter, and stuff like that, I could live without the data, but it's nice because I don't have to relogin.
I bounce around on several ROMs from time to time checking out whether I want to run one or another as a daily. Been jumping over to AOSP and AOKP recently to try to get things going, but haven't gotten things quite to my liking.
The ability to reload my entire ICS Sense 3.6 system with a quick Nandroid restore has been invaluable and made that possible. I even store older Nandroids on my PC, and keep an extra one on my sdcard (well, it is 64g) in case I want to roll back a few versions to experiment.
For instance, when Amon Ra 3.16 came out with the fix for rooting in the dev options, I restored my original Global RUU install that I couldn't root with 3.15, rooted it, then backed it up for legacy purposes.
Same thing with my tablet; have played with several ROMs for my tablet, emboldened by the fact that I can always roll back a Nandroid.

You misunderstand the premise of the question, we're not talking about nandroids. We're referring to changing ROMs and then restoring data and apps from the old ROM to the new ROM. I see people doing this all the time, then they litter the threads complaining of things not working. I don't doubt it's possible to do this on a select and intelligent basis, but in the general population I don't think it works well.

Apologies. There are many kinds of backups. As to those kind of backups, before preparing to switch ROMs, I run App2zip backing up all my apps and data to a flashable zip file. Once the new ROM is settled in, I will flash that back. Some apps are routinely not well-behaved on restore, e.g. Swiftkey, PowerAmp, and those I'll simply uninstall then restore a Titanium backup.
I have had very little problems restoring app data this way. The one thing I do NOT do is restore the actual \data partition itself in between ROM flashes, and I don't just batch restore from Titanium or from Rerware's MyBackupPro. Those are for piecemeal restores when data in a particular app becomes problematic.
I agree that you can't just "run a restore" and expect good results; but if you're deliberate and careful about it, you can minimize disruption between ROM flashes.
As often as I flash, I'd never have a working phone if I didn't do restores. I restore apps and selectively restore app data...mainly games, and apps that are a pain to set up.
Titanium baby.
When I use adb to backup I only make it backup apps/there apk never do system or shared, things like media and personal files I take off of the phone and put on pc before adb. There's several ways to backup your contacts to current places so you don't have to type them in again
