ROM advice (too many) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone...
I'm looking for a ROM that is clean, fast, stable, enables 14 toggle in the pulldown menu and overclocking would be nice. I like the look of the stock UI and everything so not into huge custom themes. What do you folks recommend?
Also, I'm a little confused on one aspect. I know I have to be rooted but do I have to have a custom kernel (like hellcats?)

I have been using check rom since i got my sgs 2 its good , close to stock (with removed useless apps from sammy), comes with options to install different kernel,themes,dialers... etc.
For better Battery backup i suggest use 4 seasons rom but its a themed rom not close to stock.
For first time rooting you need to have CF-root kernel.

I've used SensatioN ROM, MIUI & CyanogenMod.
MIUI should fit you just fine, though you'll have to get an overclocking app.
MIUI 1.12.9 has given me the best battery backup & benchmarks till now.
Visit miuiandroid website for ROM download!

MIUI has at least 12 toggles in pulldown menu, I'm not sure, but It's also heavily themed

Simple & Clean 2.4.3
Hi! You might also want to check simple and clean - it offers multiple toggles in the pull down menu, and is fast, stable and bloat-free - many stock apks have been removed and the whole experience is streamlined and close to stock.

Aura's Theme & The DarkSide' ROM?

I like the theme of the Aura very much, but I like the features of the DarkSide.
Does anysome can take the theme from Aura ROM, and flash it on DarkSide ROM???
Aura and darkside are pretty much identical ROMs with exception of darkside getting an update recently.
Just use aura in that case.

As long as there isn't anything specific in either ox the Rims depending on the following files, just use adb to backup the originals and put the m in the proper place.
LatinIME.api
SystemUI.api
framework-res.api
blur-res.api
moto-res.apk
And any other system apps that were themed
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
they are both identical, DarkSide uses Auras ROM but highly customized.
Actually guys, the Darkside ROM has the landscape HDMI mod baked into the ROM so there is one feature that isn't present in Aura yet.
Actually there is the reason
I think you can just install Darside and a blue artic theme or another theme here...

So much ROMs, which one should I use?

hey there!
My TFP is rooted for a long time now and I'm really happy with it. unfortunately sometimes its very slow and the browser crashes and so on.
I feel like I could use a bit more power - or better software.
I decided to use a custom rom, but there are so many and I never used a rom before.
I'm looking for something thats:
- stable
- fast
- (almost) stock ICS
Please help me choose the right thing, I dont wanna screw up here
For a stable, almost stock experience, you'll need to use either AndroWook or Virtuous. I personally prefer AndroWook, but Virtuous is easier to install for most people.
~Azrael's Kiss~
Virtuous is the most popular stock ROM... Androwook being the most popular overall but with heavy tweaks.
I personally use Androwook, but I always found Virtuous to be slightly more stable.

How is the AOKP M6.1?
In terms of stability how does it compare with the androwook or Virtuous rom?

There are options during the Aroma install of AndroWook 2.1 that would allow an almost stock experience (stock kernel, all the bloat, etc...) and it was just as stable as Virtuous when I tried it. The only problem with AndroWook, the additional install options makes it more complicated to install and provide more opportunites for something to go wrong.

Samsung JB rom without Touchwiz look

Hello every1
I have been a fan of CM roms since I can remember having an Android phone, always loved the feeling of a clean Android Software.
Too bad samsung always packs touchwiz on its software, I hate its launcher, the icons, the settings menu, notification bar... Everything on it!
The problem I ham having is that going with CM based roms nowadays implies having to leave most of the amazing features of this phone behind, like its amazing camera, CM camera works, but not 100%, keeps giving me trouble and the picture quality cant be compated to Samsung roms.
Does any1 know a Samsung rom with the 100% looks of JB Android ?
Best regards
You could always grab the apex launcher....

Just for you I will make a Stock SGS3 ROM that looks like stock Android. Will it be completely AOSP looking? No, but it will be much better for you.

That's GREAT. But is it possible to have the Jelly Bean SMS app instead of Samsung's (and same thing for Contacts app) ? The Google SMS app is much better (better looks, silent delivery reports,...), and if you can add Samsung features on it (direct call especially) you are a GOD
Looking forward to it.

Try using the Rom foxhound 1.3. I'm also a big fan of the aosp look. But I dint want to miss out the wonderful features in the latest iteration of touchwiz, after a lot of search, now in this. Just sharing my experience. Anyways roms are always individual preference!!

You can try Romow N4 ROM. It is a Sammy based ROM with NOVA launcher pre-installed, without any bloatwares, dioxidized and rooted to the likes of many. The only reason in my case where I find this particular ROM great is that there are many features included in it such as in-built call-recorder(stalker app I know) 2 camera apps(Original Sammy and a Nexus's I believe?) , no touchwheeze and bloatwares, no lag on keyboard operations(usually found in many custom jelly bean ROMS) just to name a few. I was on CM10 before but found this a tad better especially for the fact that my OEM(China made RED cables) MHL adaptor works fine with this ROM unlike the latter. So you can give this one a try, it has been my daily driver for about a few days now.

Do you mean DEODEXED ?
You know that performance-wise, deodexing a ROM is a huge step backwards, right?
I found absolutely no advantages in the ROM mentioned (Romow N4), and everything it provides can either be installed from the Play Store or uninstalled using Titanium Backup. Besides, it probably is MUCH, MUCH SLOWER than a stock, odexed ROM.
The only advantage of deodexing a ROM is to allow for theming the ROM by changing the resources some apps use (like the framework itself).

True and if you are peformance driven, then after you are done themeing it then you will odex it back.

Also true, but that's not something the regular user (which I believe is the case here) will do, or even know how to do. Therefore, my general advice for those who don't know the difference, is to simply avoid deodexed ROMs.
Just use foxhound with an theme

you can simply freeze touchwiz home and use nova or apex or any other launcher out there and still enjoy the other goodies from samsung.
Everyone talks about Apex and Nova launchers but Holo is the best of them all in my opinion it's just not as widely known as the others, check it out from the market (quite similar to Apex actually but better IMO)

What's difference?

Is there anyone who can tell me difference between oxygen and cm7
There are many Rom but I really don't know what they are different from
Sorry for my poor English .......
Sent from my LG-LU6200 using xda
well, afaik the gb version is deodexed and that makes it faster or something, also, it doesn't have a lot of options present on the cyanogenmod roms
Oxygen is a very stripped down rom, while cyanogenmod 7 has a lot of features. Some people prefer oxygen others prefer cm7, it all depends on what you want. Which one is faster and which one gives the best battery life is debatable. I personally prefer cm7, but they're both great roms and I'd recommend you give both roms a try.
I think cm7 and oxygen roms both are based on cyanogenmod.
Both are great roms try both and choose best suits for you.
There is no theme Chooser in oxygen rom but it is there in cm7.
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
Both are AOSP roms. Oxygen is highly optimized for speed and being light and minimal as CM7 is for added features.

You mentioned AOSP, which make me remember another ROM, AOKP (maybe bad spelling!!!)
Is AOKP the rom which has an unicorn as its mark? I've flashed that rom to enjoy 4.0
I like the ROM most
Can anyone tell what its feafures are?
Thx for all your helping
Sent from my LG-LU6200
AOSP is the standard "made by Google" Android project. EVERY rom derives from this. Even the stock roms.
Both CyanogenMod and Oxygen are modifications/branches from the standard AOSP source trees. Both attempt to fix or enhance what Google achieved with Android. The main difference here are features.
Oxygen is more true to AOSP, with a few additions. Lean, clean and pretty fast. When you start adding apps to make up for missing features like I do since I miss some CM features, it does start to slow down a bit.
CyanogenMod (CM7/9/10) adds a whole bunch or neat features you would usually use other apps for to get the same functionality.
AOPK like CM adds a whole bunch of features that are not available in CM and also shares quite a few, Theme Chooser for instance.
Like previously stated, its all about personal preference. Android is about choice, you get to choose what you want your device to do. The best way to find out, is choose the features you need. Test them all and decide for yourself. Each rom brings its pros and cons, which for the most part balances out. Personally I like CM roms because I like the features and they give me a device more capable than the stock rom.

Stock based vs CM7.2 based custom roms :)

Guys i've started this thread to discuss about stock and cm based custom roms
1)which is better in what way
2)battery life
3)gaming performance
4)tweaks available for each
i felt that there is no thread related to this that's why started one
for battery, stock is the best
Stock FTW
Better battery, stable, camera, dialer, music and mms are very good.
Personally I miss tw goodies like integrated task manager button, camera and music player in CM7 so Stock is better for me
Yeah stock is stable, but so is cm7.
However, you miss out on the newer features offered in the cm9/ cm10 /aokp/ paranoid android roms.
I'm using PAC by nims11.
The main reason I personally prefer cm7 over stock is multitasking. On stock if I am using one application and switch to another, then switch back, my place is lost and often the first app has been killed and has to restart. That might be why cm7 supposedly uses more battery (I don't notice a difference personally, but I use my phone a lot)
I'm also not a fan of touchwiz and prefer the customization of cm7.
I love trying new roms no matter what the android version; 2.3.6, 2.3.7, 4.0 or 4.1
Kudos to all the Dev's working hard to make my old crappy ace awesome!

CM7 is best..
A little bit battery drain than stock but has more costomization for daily use..also has no bugs.. all the things is working and stable..
Actually our opinions always have a touch of personal experience. Some people use the stock based just the way they are & some people tweak it more. I've seen that the sgs II v10.1 has a great multi tasking capability ( atleast for me...) . Kranti.ace has really brought out a revolution as his name says. His rom is pretty smooth & he's promising further improvisation. What else to expect? Just the devs to bring out the better of what's already best...
I used to have beautiful life before. Now I'm in engineering...!
Completely correct.
