I rooted a coworkers phone a couple weeks back and now he's telling me he did the ota update. I'm not sure how all updates were disabled when I left but he showed me and its 2.1.
That being said, does a rooted phone that received an update maintain root and how do you tell. I feel comfortable going through the rooting process but if its a lost cause I'd rather not mess with it and mess up someone else's phone.
Thanks guys.
Well he wanted me to try it anyway and everything went just like the first 3 times I rooted. Had a memory error but after a couple reboots I tried again and no problem....I think anyway. After we the recovery screen I had to run so I'm don't know if he flashed anything with success yet or not.
The OTA-2.1 update would never run on a phone that already had 2.1 running on it. It patches files from 1.17.605.1 and has version checks in it that prevent it from running otherwise.
That suggests one of two things:
(a) You are mistaken in your belief that you rooted his phone, or
(b) Your friend has acquired some mad skilz; sufficiently advanced that he would no longer need your help. (That is, he rolled back his rooted phone to 1.5, and then took the OTA after that.)
If he had a 1.5 phone that received the OTA-2.1 update, it is highly likely that it can be rooted - for the first time or the second.

I'm not real sure what happened. Said he tried to go into recovery and ended up with hboot update. After all that he was at 2.1and couldn't get recovery, it gave him the android and the exclamation point.
I got it and used the 1.5 to 2.1 to get recovery back and besides some memory errors everything was gravy.
I know he was rooted, I flashed aloysius 6 for him when I first rooted it.
Well, perhaps your friend is confused about what he did.
The OTA-2.1 update will not run on a 2.1 phone, and it certainly won't install a new bootloader either.
Sounds more like he re-flashed either the root ROM or the Leak-V1 rom - both of them use the same image (Android in lower right hand corner, yellow exclamation point inside a white triangle in the upper left hand corner) for the recovery boot "splash screen".
He can find out what his options are if he checks his bootloader version; they're all good for re-rooting except for the 1.49.0000 S-ON (aka "Leak") bootloader.
From the way you describe it, it sounds like he had the ROOT PB00IMG.ZIP file sitting on his SD card still, and probably just re-rooted his phone (which would give him 1.49.2000 S-OFF).

Up until today, I've been rooted. Used the SuperOneClick program. It was a piece of cake.
Today, I decide to check for new software updates..Two new ones.
I updated them and now I'm running 2.2.2 and ed05. Well I'm assuming that's the problem.
Because I've been going through the process today of backing up my ROM and stuff, to flash MIUI for the first time. Well, nothing seemed to work.
I tried to backup my current ROM, but nothing happened. (Should've rebooted and come back on, like normal after 'backup current ROM' was selected and a name was entered for it; Didn't happen. )
So I figured that the new software updates unrooted my phone.
So I go back into SOC and root my phone again, but during the process, it tells me that I'm already rooted. Finishes the process and I reboot my phone, etc.
Well the Superuser app is in my list now, but none of the root-required apps are working. They all tell me that I'm not rooted. I even used Root Check to see the status. It tells me as well, that I'm not rooted.
I go back to the SOC program and UNroot. Well that was successful. I reboot, etc.
No Superuser app. So far so good. So I go BACK again and root, everything went well, except when it said an 'su' command was sent to my phone, I never got one, but I still got the Superuser app. And still, the apps tell me I'm not rooted.
Any kind of help is great. I really appreciate all the time, spent reading this.
Sorry if I went on and on, but it's bugging me now and I really need some answers to what the problem might be. Thanks, guys. ;(
superoneclick does not work on ed05
you need to odin cwm recovery
then reboot into recovery using three finger method
install root.zip file
then reboot
directions for rooting with odin is here:

SOC does work with ED05.. I've used it several times, different phones.
Really? I thought quite a few folks were having trouble with soc after the ota ed05 update? If thats the case, then thanks for the clarification... although odin is still another option for the op since soc is not working.

I read most of the first page on that thread, mostly just read the latest replies about that method. I'll read the full directional tutorial once I'm clarified of questions.
I think I read a couple of users saying this does root your phone, but it will wipe all data as well? I'm not quite sure. I want my phone rooted, no matter if I install MIUI or not. I don't want a factory reset though.
Thanks droidstyle, I'm back to being rooted!
Now onward to flashing MIUI! Wish me luck.
:^)
I was wondering if some people can help me out.
I want to unroot my phone, however, i accepted the update earlier this week. With that said, can i still run the sbf that Yah for Juggs released in the developement section?
Furthermore, will it erase / factory restore the phone as well?
The issues im having is that the gps isn't locking and i cant attach apps to the homescreens, both of which were working fine before i rooted.
Sent from my Pho-o-o-ton!
The OTA update earlier this week unrooted the phone so unless you rerooted after the OTA update
Also a simple factory restore unroots the phone
With the issue you say you have (and after an update) I would start with a simple factory restore and just let phote sort itself out in it first bootup (ie just let it sit and do it thing for 5-10 min in it's first bootup)
Computer are stupit little beast and can be very fickle, don't fight with them, don't push then or distract them when their thinking as they first boot up, they get confused very very easy
hey,
so my mum just bought a desire 601. Before, I had given her my old rooted phone with all my customizations that she has now grown accustomed to, so she wants me to root her new phone and make it look exactly the same.
When she gave it to me to root earlier today, it was brand new. I unlocked the bootloader, and flashed the custom recovery (I went with Philz), but I can't seem to get root. I flashed the latest 2.40 from chainfire's site, but I keep getting the "No binary installed" error. The zip always flashes successfully. Root checker says I have no root.
I just want to keep the ROM stock since its my mom's phone. I showed her insertcoin running on my M7, but she likes sense 5.5, and insertcoin only provides sense 6. So I just want to root the stock ROM and move on.
EDIT: hey, is there an RUU anywhere for this phone? because I can't seem to backup with either philz or twrp, just says cant mount cache and system partitions... wanna be extra careful not to mess anything up
EDIT: Been messing with this all day, no response from anyone here on XDA, went ahead and installed insertcoin. Failed. tried again. success. no idea why. STILL don't have root. Tried superSU and superUser with full wipes. WTF. help?
EDIT: well, thanks for your help XDA, but I managed to finally get it. found some obscure program for windows called Kingo root, and it worked first run. I never looked at windows utilities, always just rooted manually, but whatever, its done now.
I've had my VZ S4 since sometime around Dec of 2013. Previously was on a DroidX, I've really honestly never had any problems rooting or installing custom rom's on my phones (A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU HERE that made that possible) so I'm not a noob...but I'm not an expert either. I usually wait and read a lot of threads, follow the instructions and I've always been good to go. My S4 started at MK2, (took the OTA right out of the box, now I now better ) and with the help of K1mu's post on rooting the S4 with Saferoot everything went off with out a hitch (thank you!!). After successfully rooting the phone, I installed Safestrap, backed up the stock rom slot, created a custom rom slot and installed Hyperdrive 11...everything is working flawlessly.
So fast forward a year to KitKat I returned to XDA...read and read and read and followed the Dev's instructions and was good to go again. I know it involved Safestrap-I545-3.75-KitKat-A03.apk, TowelRoot, Odin and ALL_VZW_I545VRUFNC5_I545VZWFNC5_1151670_REV06_user_low_ship_Multi_Cert_Tar.md5. Definitely was one of muniz_ri post. Any way I basically used Odin...flashed back to factory stock followed muniz_ri post and was good to go again with KitKat(Thank You!!)
So now to the present, about a week or so ago I had an OTA screen pop asking to update, it actually showed 2 updates available (don't know if there is a log in the S4 that keeps track of the updates). So I came back here of course and started reading and reading and reading...and I was ready to begin the process in this thread by muniz_ri: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i545oc1-5-0-1-keeproot-t3096558 which again I am sure would have went flawlessly. Then I had an accident...I had been dismissing the update (it popped up a lot ) when the unthinkable happened...I pressed yes, the phone went thru the update process and I don't know what update it was but it wasn't Lolllipop...so I was like phewwww, clicked on my RootCheck (JRummy) and it said Rooted 4.4.2 KitKat (NK4), SuperSu 2.46 so I figured everything was ok. Not so, I don't know what the upgrade was but I no longer have root or access to safestrap, SuperSu or any apps that require root...and this is where I need guidance from the masters. I have a TWRP/Safestrap back up (stock-2014-12-08--19-33-37 KOT49H.I545VRUFNK1) from right after rooting for KitKat, nothing else...just root I'm pretty sure of that. So what would be the best way to fix? Is there a way to re-root the phone in it's present condition? Can I use the TWRP back up some how with out SafeStrap? How far back can I down grade with Odin using a VWZ factory image? Any idea what happened with the update prior to Lollipop? Sorry if this was long winded, just trying to figure out the best way moving forward. I don't really care about the data on the phone. Before going forward I'll do A Keis back up of the stuff I want to save. I appreciate any help/answers/suggestions...Jinx
