[Q] Need: HomeScreen Widget/Bookmark/Shortcut to LAN Share - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I gave my daughter a Nook Color Tablet for her birthday. After rooting, installing ADW Launcher, HomeCatcher and several apps, I have it just about where I want it.
Our family has about 1.8 tb of video on a Buffalo NAS. Using ES Explorer, I can find it and using MX Player, I can play any of it on the Nook. So far so good.
Problem: I can't find a way to get ES Explorer to create a shortcut (to the NAS video folder) that I can place on the home screen of the Nook. Astro can create shortcuts/bookmarks, but I can't get Astro to access the NAS video folder (even though I think Astro is supposed to be able to do this). Oh... and MX Player freaks out and quits if you try to start it normally, instead of just passing a file to it via ES Explorer. It freaks out and quits with a message that there's "no SD card" present. But if you pass it the file from ES Explorer, it's brilliant.
Question: What is the easiest way to put a shortcut/bookmark/widget on the homescreen that when clicked it opens a file explorer (ES Explorer, Astro or something else) to a folder on my NAS?

Don't know if the app anycut can but I'd say that it probably can more than anything else

Hi, I have the same problem. Did you find a solution?

How do you set this in android? I have tried google, but it seems to be devs making apps...i just want to link certain extensions to apps
for example; i want to be able to open astro file explorer open a video file which in turns opens rock. at the moment, videos open with the default player.
this is also the same when using orb, it wants to use its own crappy player.
thanks in advance

[Q] Streaming .avi over LAN. Can I choose player?

Running VEGAn 5.1.1 and these .avi's begin to play in what must be the default player. After a few seconds they stop and spawn the following message:
"Caching. This media does not support streaming, player will be started after transferring completely."
I'd love to try RockPlayer or some others to see if that helps but I'm accessing these files through ES File Explorer and long pressing the file doesn't give me an option of media player. Nor can I open RockPlayer first and navigate to the .avi as I can't get RP to see any but locally stored media.
Anyone point me in the right direction? Any tips at ALL about streaming over LAN? Thanks loads.
astro and es explorer support wan/lan.
what codec do you have on your avi. i tend to stick with mp4. as those work best.
try remount your sd card and restarting tab
Use CIFSmanager to mount the shared files, then stream away

File Manager - Does something like this exist

I am pretty new to the NC and android experience but I find the file manager loaded with gaaps awkward and seem buggy on my NC running CM7.0.0 from SD card and get quite a few force closes. Maybe with time I would become more proficient.
Is their any app out their that runs as a file manager and also will allow movement of files from PC like Samba.
It would be great if you could just run a file manager and give a password to connect with home PC and grab or place files.
If not what is considered the best "file manager" for normal use? Free first but would consider paid if it did what I want.
es file explorer works well for me. I am able to go onto my computer shares and grab files or put files from my nook onto my computer. You can use it to browse sd card/internal, do buletooth trensfers, lan and ftp
root explorer or bust.
if you only buy one app, get this one.
File Expert - free on market.
I log into my NAS using SAMBA and can copy files directly off the NAS. File Expert installs apps and can also stream media to the nook. Able to watch streaming video directly off the NAS using Rockplayer. Streaming audio off the NAS also works using the stock music player.

Thanks I am giving it a try.
Tried to connect with my LAN using menu / new / scan but it just scans and doesn't find anything. I wonder if it needs some ok in router settings.
For local on the NC it looks great
Astro File Manager. Free on the Market. Great App!
ES or Astro are the two most popular.
ES is really your best bet. Here's why:
It's free
It has root explorer capabilities on CM7
It will connect to Samba shares (connect manually, don't scan - scan is slow and buggy)
It works well and is really stable
It lets you install apps, and has built in music and picture viewers so you don't have to play stuff from your library
It's free
Nothing does everything ES does and is also free.

I use Astro but find ES works fine as well. For Astro, make sure you download the extra Astro SMB module (in market).
I bought root explorer back when I first had my g1 and have used it since. Best one out there imo.

I just DLed ES File Explorer, and it's insane how easily it connected to my PC. I have Root Explorer--does it have this functionality?
Try WiFi explorer, it has some neat options using WiFi only. Not a total replacement for root explorer or file expert, but has its use.
You can work the opposite way with Swiftp, which is free on the marketplace:
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.swiftp
This allows you to ftp into your Nook from your computer.
I've been really satisfied with ES. It's the best file explorer, best remote access, and oddly enough the best video player on my NC.
Has anyone tried to install File Station Tablet? It looks great, but only available for Honeycomb. Was wondering if anyone had installed the APK on CM7. App is free, so redistributing the APK should not be an issue.

[Q] streaming with subtitles possible

i have a question with respect to streaming of subtitles to my tab.
At the moment i am running standard touchwise i am not intending to root it.
Here is my problem, i downloaded several episodes from a series and i am streaming them to my galaxy tab 10.1 on the following ways:
way 1: tversity on pc --> skifta on tab --> using rockplayer to play the movie
way 2: plexmediaserver on pc --> plex on tablet
I have no problems playing movies with incorporated subs (of course) but i have not found a way to play a avi in combination with a .srt file. (of course srt has same name as movie, and it is working in windows).
Is there a way to get this working??? am i doing something wrong?
EDIT: sorry for the bad english... i am from the netherlands
is there nobody who could help me out? or just tell me it is not possible.... i guess i am not the only one having this problem, right?
I know DicePlayer on the market supports .srt subs. You will need to transfer the .srt file(s) to your tablet.

hmm, so that means i stream the .avi to my tablet and subsequently it opens automaticly the .srt file that i will have on my tablet? will this work with for instance skifta?
I use ES File Explorer and have added my laptop as a server over my home network (I'm not sure how you'd go about doing it otherwise).
These are my exact steps:
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Navigate to .srt file
3. Copy .srt from laptop to tablet sdcard
4. Navigate to .avi
5. Tap .avi file > Complete action using: DICE Player --(movie should start playing)
6. Tap "Select a subtitle" on top right of screen
7. Navigate to your .srt file on tablet
Done.
I've never used Skifta, but (presuming Skifta operates as a file explorer which you use to browse your PC files) as long as the .srt is on your tablet, it should work.
can i add my computer as server without filling in a pasword? i am on windows 7 with only 1 user and dont want to change that.....
As far as I know, you need a password set up. However, I think you can set Windows to auto-login so you don't have to bother with entering it every time... Google should help in that reagard...
thanx everybody. i have es file explorer working.... so that is perfect
just downloaded the trial version of diceplayer and this player is streaming also subtitles... so that is also perfect.
unfortunately i have not found another free player that could do this . So, somebody knows of a player that also stream subtitlels or where i could select the subtitles which i have on my tab?
Just want to close this thread with at this moment i think is the only solution:
- I have installed es file explorer
- Put on a new user account on windows with a name/pass
- (optionally --> set in windows 7 to automatic startup without asking for pass)
- Bought diceplayer in the market to play series
Diceplayer is also streaming the subs from my computer, so you dont have to place the srt files on your tablet.
thanx for all help varelawarfare, much appreciated.

[Q] ES explorer

someThing has changed and i'm wondering what it is.
I use ES explorer all the time so i can stream videos from my comp to my phone.
to view .flv files i'll use MX player or vPlayer. both being fantastic apps.
i can watch .flv files from the internal storage on the device, but when i try stream .flv files from my comp it gives me 'sorry, no application available'. this just started happening not too long ago. use to work great, internal or from my comp. also happening on my rooted nook tablet. anyBody know what's up?
nobody having the same issue?
