Honestly and seriously ...I've been with the nexus one for almost 2 years and looking into an upgrade.

I was initially looking to get the galaxy nexus, after all the delays and needing a new phone as the old one died, went for the galaxy note and am loving it even though it's still on gingerbread. Rooted it, loaded a lite rom, speedier kernel, got rid of most of the Samsung crap and just sitting and waiting for an ics build to pop up.

The phone has only been out for a month. It takes a bit to get some momentum, but honestly, I'm loving the RAZR with a simple root, and some small tweeks.
I'm looking forward to ICS, but am more than happy with the phone as is, and could be pleased for a few months while the development catches up.
The lack of perceived development is due to two things IMO...
1. Locked boot-loader
2. Another great phone (SGN) being released at the same time.
Motorola really messed up by locking this boot-loader while another very "open" phone was being released around the same time and by looking at the forums it's quite obvious. Considering the above though, the development here has been pretty decent thanks to a bunch of dedicated pro's.

According to what I've read, the Nexus, while on Verizon, the contract is actually under Google's control. Hence, the unlocked bootloader. It was Google's requirement that the phone come to the market open.
Motorola, on the other hand, is restricted like HTC & other Samsung devices on Verizon's network. HTC originally stated they would release a tool, but then Verizon forbade it, and the Rezound was fully locked as well.
Samsung's phones are almost always locked down, it just so happens they're easier to hack, but they don't support development very well, so even with it unlocked, you end up with very poor support.
HTC never releases their source code (at least from what I've read) so it's hard to get a working custom rom that's 100% on their phone.
I've owned 3 Motorola Droid phones, and the last two have been great for development. My mom also owns another one in the Droid X, and it too was easy to flash, and had plenty of support from the community due to the source codes being available.
If I can teach my mom how to flash a custom ROM on her phone, it can't be THAT hard to do, and the support I get when she has an issue, is better than Verizon offers in store.
As for Motorola messing up, maybe it's on timing, but really it's not their fault the phone came locked down. They actually were pushing for open devices first, by offering the OG Droid, and then offering the Xoom with an unlocked bootloader, and announcing it wanted to unlock bootloaders in late 2011.....it's just Verizon shoved it back in their face.
So if anything blame Verizon for this.
hmm, my problem is that i really don't want a Samsung phone. The SG2 is will become outdated and most ppl have that (i want to be different).
I've thought of the Note, i like big, but found it unpractical.

I'm a keyboard guy myself, so I'm getting ready for the Droid 4 which should be coming out any day now, and am probably going to give my RAZR to my wife, as she likes the screen, and her OG droid is getting really long in the tooth.
After that, there's a new HTC "Zeta" was rumored recently as well as the "ville".
Really, you kind of have to wait till CES for more phones after Christmas. CES is Jan 10-14th, and there will be quite a few new phones that are announced there.
I am also coming from a N1, been using it for 2 years. No big problems except the lack of internal memory (even thought I'm using S2E, but still...) and couldn't play much games on the phone...
The Razr looks very nice! The CPU is the same one as the GN, but with much better designs and build. So I also seriously consider this phone too. But as a top of the line phone the graphic seems a little weak, even compare to SGS2(which is out almost half year now). So I'm a llittle worry about this....Maybe we will have to keep using our trusty N1 at least till the end of CES in Jan.
I agree with garlick2. The first thing I did was to root this phone. However, this is the first Android phone that I have had that I have been happy with right out of the box. I have made a few minor customizations, but nothing major.

I'm returning my Atrix and I was wondering how I keep the apps I bought from the Market? Do I have to back them up with Titanium or will the market remember that I bought the apps and just let me reinstall them on a different phone as long as I sign in to the market as the same user?
Market will remember as long as you use the same credentials to set up your new phone.
Appbrain.com is the computer version of the Android Market. You can sync your device to the website and vise versa. You can backup and save the apps that you have downloaded and bought and then quickly download them again.
https://market.android.com/ is the computer version of the market, appbrain.com is a 3rd party site.

Returning it because the bootloader is locked with no crack in sight, and at&t screwed us on hsupa. Motorola's new update removes root and devs are leaving the Atrix so that should throw red flags up. I don't want to be stuck with this locked Atrix for 2 years and only get updates when motorola gets around to it and then having to hope I can root after every little update. I'm not happy with them locking me out of it so I'm not supporting motorola. Botched recalled updates etc. I'm getting the inspire 4G to replace it and I will be able to Tinker with roms all I want! Hardware wise I love the Atrix. I'll miss tegra games and the high res screen but that's it. Moto and at&t crippled it. Sad. Such Huge potential.

This is my first Android phone but I feel like I'm missing out on some of the best aspects of the XDA community and features of Android, in general. I like the Atrix, but not enough to keep it for two years on contract with most likely very meager updating by Motorola in the future. I also have some gripes about the hardware.
I consider this my introductory Android experience and absolutely love the OS. I love it so much, that I want to be able to experience more of it!
I agree with everything you said, except for the Inspire. Since I sold my iPhone 4 (for a nice profit!), I will be using an old school Razr until something of interest comes along. The Inspire does not seem to warrant the use of my upgrade eligibility.
Also debating jumping ship altogether from AT&T. This whole HSPA thing, while not a deal breaker, certainly left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I have recently found AT&T store reps to be uninformed and fairly rude, especially on the phone. I have been a loyal customer since 2000.
I hope that the current locking trend we've seen from HTC and Motorola is not a sure sign of the future of Android. One of the main reasons I left my iPhone behind was because I enjoy tinkering with my phone a lot, and the Android OS is so well suited for it!
It seems like developer support is a key factor in ensuring the longevity of a device, far after the hardware company has moved on. I don't like to buy phones continuously off contract and I would like to ensure that my phone stays developmentally relevant for the duration off my contract.
This may not be the proper forum for this response, but I just felt the need to vent and am interested in hearing what you guys have to say. Not trying to bad-mouth the Atrix for those who like it, it's just not quite the Android experience I hoped for.

You know, as we veer rapidly off topic, I have to say that while I've been disheartened by the shackles put onto this "open" OS of Android by Motorola and while I too am waiting with baited breath for someone to hack open the bootloader, not a day goes by that I'm not happy I switched away from the iPhone to move to an Atrix. While I agree that while the "4G" is still nowhere to be seen and that the locked bootloader is a pain, this is still twice the device my iPhone 4 ever was, especially as the Android OS doesn't treat all its users like they're half brain-dead and completely lacking any technical knowledge. I'm happy to say I'll be keeping my Atrix.
I'm unsure if I'm keeping my Atrix. I'm still within the 30 days - I love the phone, but some of the things I tend to do are things I can not do without access to the bootloader.

People are saying that kholk is working on unlocking the bootloader. Last I heard of Da_G, he was working on it too.
Something you guys might find interesting is the white nexus s that has access to the AT&T 3G bands.
Anyways, on topic: Backup your apps using TiBu to your external sd-card. Then plop the new card into your phone, and restore.

read above a 5th grade level for one (some can do this without an unlocked bootloader)

I'll cut to the chase cause i have a tendency to drag out the tiniest detail for ages, and i just wanna ask this XD
Basically, i have a Galaxy S II, and i love it, i started hacking it around august after owning it since the UK launch. I like to see myself as fairly competant when it comes to NOT permabricking it, however i still am hesitant to flash new roms, kernels cause of lingering fears.
So! What i came here to ask, is i am planning to purchase a second phone just for this reason, and have been looking at the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and original Galaxy S. Sadly i dont know much about the hacking scene of every other phone, so i dont really know what other choices there are.
Basically, what phone would you reccomend, even if i havent mentioned it, to buy purely for the community behind it?

The HTC Vision (aka the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) has a great community of developers, cookers, and users. I was hesitant to start flashing custom ROMs initially after rooting as well. So I went back and hacked my old Motorola Cliq to test things out. I promise you if you can read and follow directions you'll have no problems flashing ROMs... there's a great variety of ROMs for the Vision and I expect in the not too distant future we'll also see Ice Cream Sandwich.

i would choose motorola droid(fav one) and nexus.I know droid is not in your list...
Never go for HTC... my experience after being a HTC user.

I would beg to differ on the previous HTC comment. I have an Evo. It's getting up in age, but I love it. There are tons of roms available for it, and even though development has slowed, you'd still be surprised at the amount of development happening. If you're looking for a phone solely for playing with, you'd have plenty of options with the Evo. You can get one fairly cheap, especially if you opt for one with a bad ESN - which you might as well since you won't be activating it.
It's nearly impossible to brick - the only way you could would be to pull the battery during a radio update.
Of course which phone you get depends on your wants and needs. Check out the development subforums for the devices you have in mind.

Nexus one and evo is different. Doesn't like HTC due to not giving out updates that they promised. Eg: HTC flyer is still in GB. If you wanted a true unbrickable phone, get a developers' phone. Instant update and super extremely easy to unlock. And it is fit for every update to give you full user experience.

The HD2 is an option too. Getting seriously old (but that much as dual core has still to be really used by the OS) but it sill has a lot of development going on, kernel and ROM wise...MIUI, CM7, Sense, WP7 and WinMo etc.
So, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, so feel free to yell at me if it's not. I currently have a DX2, but will probably be getting a new phone today. I'm kind of (barely) torn between a Rezound and a Razr. I mainly want to get rid of my DX2 because it seems that we'll be locked in the bootloader section for a while, and it doesn't seem to be worth it anymore. Would this be the better device to get? Anyone regretting their purchase of the Rezound? Also, does it appear the Rezound will be completely unlocked soon?
There is nothing to not like about this phone. It feels so good in your hand, runs smoothly, and will have great dev support once rooted. By far the best phone on the market

The ubiquitous "they" (whoever that is) are working on s-off, meaning that at some undetermined point in the future, we may have an unlocked bootloader. No guarantees, but I would put the odds pretty good in our favor that we'll have it within a few months. Fortunately, the phone works pretty well with the stock ROM (yes, even with the bloatware.) And if you really can't stand the bloatware, there are methods using temp root to de-bloat your phone until a permanent solution is discovered.
As far as the hardware, it's solid, large but not overly cumbersome; I did not feel like I went from a 3.7" screen to a 4.3" screen just by the feel in my hand, but my eyes certainly notice the difference. Also, it's fast: like I said, even without de-bloating there are no hiccups or interface lag whatsoever.
And you can wear overpriced, over-hyped red earbuds, to show everyone you bought the newest, shiniest phone.
No regrets getting this phone whatsoever. Just anxiously waiting for root ... but to be honest, it wouldn't be the end of the world if root is never achieved. I'm completely satisfied with the phone. *fingers crossed*
I came from the X2, you will think you never owned a smartphone before, lol. You may even throw your X2 at the wall.
I started my smartphone journey with HTC, had a couple Moto devices in between (including the Droid X). Let me tell ya, it feels great to be back with HTC. I'll never buy Motorola again!

funny you say that because when i goto the verizon store i disregard all motorola lol
Im stuck on what to do. I cant decide if I should hold out for a nexus or just buckle and get a razr. I've held the razr in hand and I do love it.
The reason I wanted a nexus was the "pure" google experience. Basically I just dont like a bunch of crap installed on my phone and I dont really like "blur" or senseui.
Here are my concerns.
- Development support. The razr seems pretty popular so I would say its safe to assume this phone will have attention, am I wrong?
- Is the 720 screen that much nicer on the nexus than the qhd screen on the razr...I've look at the rezound and the razr seems to have a more vibrant screen. I know their two different screens but I feel the rezound has washed out colors compared to the razr
- I could care less about nfc, doesnt seem to be taking off anytime soon
Is the nexus just over hyped? Considering its not THAT much better true spec wise than the razr and its being released over a month after it...my only real draw to it is the fact I can unlock the bootloader with one command and do what I want. Im assuming the razr will be pretty popular in the dev community once things get unlocked with it as well...
Thoughts? Am I overhyping the nexus and should just get a razr? I should add I'm not the most delicate with phones.
Based on what you've said, you should probably wait till the Galaxy Nexus is available for demo in your local store so you can get a comparison hands-on experience. Why pull the trigger now? The Nexus is almost here. You can wait a few more weeks. If you get the Razr now, you'll just be kicking yourself for the next two years, wondering if the Nexus would have been better or not. Wait a few weeks and then read all the new Nexus users posts to see what they think. Plus, don't you wanna know which has better battery life?
In regards to not being delicate with phones ... many of us are not, there are tons of protective cases to choose from, and there is insurance you can get for your phone. Don't let the Razr's Kevlar or Gorilla glass let you think the Razr is automatically more sturdy than a Nexus or any phone for that matter. That's just advertising flair. If you drop either, they will both get damaged. All phones are susceptible to damage.

Wait I have nothing bad to say about the razr but I love what Ive seen of the galaxy as well hype features aside on both it comes down to what you willing to hold on to for 2 years
If you want one device for the next two years then get the nexus. At least you know the OS will be updated many times along the way. Although the Moto is a very good quality device and will easily last the two years...

I also have the same concerns as the TS. I really love the RAZR but am holding back because I don't know how the dev community will be for it (of course it will never be on par with the Nexus, I know). Also, since I will be purchasing the GSM version, I should have an unlocked bootloader, yes? Please correct me if I am wrong
I am in the same situation as the OP. The only exception is that I have already gotten the Razr as an additional line. I am trying it out to see if I like it. The development for me seems so complicated. I have NEVER owned a Moto Droid so this bootstrap, recovery stuff is all way over my head. I mean I understand what needs to be done to flash things but I don't understand WHY? This might be because I have a thunderbolt and a week after launch day I rooted it and was able to boot into recovery and bootloader without anything additional (the TB was my first android).
I like everything about the Razr except that part I mentioned. The only thing holding me back on the GN is only what I have heard here on XDA. Battery life, instability, file transfers, lack of external memory and others i can't think of off the top of my head.
I wonder if all these things will be address when it is updated? Or will the VZW version not have many of these issues. I guess i will also have to wait until the GN is official to make my final decision. I like the way ICS works and cannot wait for it. I also know that the Razr will be updated to it early next years so i am TORN!

Gn is a good phone but it is nowhere near razr about quality. Specs talk for itself, razr looks better and feels stronger.
Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

It would be a shame if Verizon does this but I would think they would start those corney commercials showing the phone as 99.00 down with 2year agreement or something like that - today is my last day to return I think, so I have a lot to consider

I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

Releasing so late after the other carriers is kind of a stupid move, but honestly if you have vzw and want the one, you're stuck waiting anyways. Or get the gs7 or whatever that Sammy brings out a month after that.

I don't see how its stupid. When the iPhone 4 released on Verizon, they had the fixed bezel around it vs atts 4

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.
