As states above... will we ever achieve this?? We have root/recovery etc.. but no sbf? Why??? And when will this happen? I know there are very talented developers out here, can't tell me that no one has found a way yet. I want to root but w/o an sbf file I refuse to root my baby. Also I want to get rid of the dumb bloat ware Verizon seems to think we have to have and never use. Just my way of sticking it to them too.
Anybody???

It's not the developers, it's gotta be leaked.
2 things that could help..
1) task manager... It will automatically close progz. once the display is off for 2 minutes and it does work.. I let my display turn off while in.task manager for 2 minutes... Turned display back on refreshed... And the progz I set up for auto kill were not running...
2) all you have to do is just root... Perfectly safe... No threat of bricking... And you can run titanium back up and freeze what Ebert you want... Nothing to worry about... And when ics starts getting pushed out unfreeze and you are good to go...
P.s. If you are on cdma (Verizon) safe strap is out.. Lots of info out there... Very easy to do..

I am using the task mngr that came stock, I just want to be sure its not going to cause issues if I start freezing Verizon's crap ware. Don't care about flashing Rome right now. O/C not needed here as well (don't care its plenty fast enough) I just don't want bricking the Razr.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App
Not trying to be a bad influence but the chances of bricking your phone just from obtaining root are pretty slim.
You can then use Titanium to freeze all the bloat. That way if you run into any problems or force close issues you can always just unfreeze. I definitely would advise against deleting anything that isn't removable when you're running stock.
There's a thread in the development section that has a few user lists of safe apps to freeze.
In short....no. You will not see an SBF for the Razr....why....because they moved away from SBF's and now do FXZ's. Will we see an FXZ....yes I believe so.
I'd like to see one for Rogers, gonna have to start networking and find that guy who might not mind having to look for a new job lol.
I always root and freeze bloat on my phones. i did the same on my razr following the list here on this forum. something i froze caused a bootloop. I was able to get into stock recovery and had to do a factory reset to get things working again. I now have a nandroid backup made w the custom recovery apk, but an sbf would still be a nice option.
I've rooted the Razr (very easy and painless to do btw) titanium backup bootstrap/cwm and backed up stock and apps. Froze some of the crap ware that were OK to do. Happy for now no issues at all. Next up ICS ota which I'm in no hurry for(get the bugs out first) Loving this phone!

Ok guys. So I was excited like a school girl waiting for a Justin Bieber concert when the sbf for the latest 2.3.4 OTA was released. I rushed to my wife's windows laptop and started up RSD lite, loaded up the sbf, and plugged my phone while it was on thee RSD Protocol mode. A bit of background info first, I had been running the 2.3.3 stock since I got the phone over a month ago. I had painstakingly removed all the bloat and was very happy with the way my phone was running. I had a DINC before and I was appreciating the bigger higher res screen. Anyways, so I though when you install sbf on your phone, it takes it back to factory stock with the root gone (obviously) and with all the bloatware and crapware back on the phone. So anyways, I use the 2.3.4 sbf and install it on my phone. The phone reboots normally and I am quite happy. But when I unlock the phone, it is exactly as I left it before. With the zeam launcher and all the apps I had. The only thing that was missing was the superuser app. So I knew something had changed but what? So I check the phone specs and what do you know, it has android 2.3.4 on it. I also notice less lag and improved scrolling, also the task manage icon has changed. But I knew the root was gone, so I use Pete's one click method to get the root back. But I am still confused on why did the phone not go back to complete stock despite the fact that I sbfd it to stock. Does anyone have a clue?
You put 2.3.4 on your Droid X2? And its actually working?
EDIT: Would kinda make sense....why else would there be a soak test??? Will be waiting to see if anyone else has any knowledge of this. If it holds true, then you made one heck of a find I think...
Yup. 2.3.4 working and more stable. I should mention that I did not wipe before doing the sbf because i thought sbf would wipe everything.

It is in the dev section.. heres a link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284679
i have attached the screenshot if you need further proof.
You went from stock 2.3.3 to stock 2.3.4 and things look the same but lost root? That's typical...the same happens if you get an ota. It's not like you rolled back a version forcing you to clear data/cache. All you did was updated your already stock to an updated stock. If you want the stock experience then wrote data/cache. Trust me, nothing freaky about this.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Yea, I think you have to wipe first. I don't think it clears \data\ which is the partition that contains the apps.
I'm pretty sure it wipes and overwrites several of the other partitions such as \system\
Yeah. That makes more sense. Because earlier when i tried to run a script on 2.3.3 and messed everything up so i tried to sbf and everything was gone. But it makes sense.

When 2.3.3 was released I sbf'd and installed, having all my stuff stay. Been using it since then, no problems.
Its not an "OTA" he got the leaked SBF in the Dev section. REASON WHY IT CAME BACK TO HOW IT WAS!! when you add your google account, there is a small check box saying backup your apps/data. This is a quick way for you to sorta "nandroid" your phone when you factory reset. As of gingerbread 2.3.3 you could backup that data in the google servers... If you like 99% who don't stop and read lol just saying .. you wont see the box and it automatically has it checked. Just to let you know your not going crazy or anything. btw the leak is amazingly better than 2.3.3 with the blur. Looks the same just about, BUT the performance is over 9000 times better.

An ota and a leak are typically the same thing in my experience. It's just different ways of how you get the update.

Like all of the SBF's we have for this phone, they are system only. Meaning they only carry the system apps inside of it. They will not affect your data/apps. They will have overwritten the apps that are in the system folder only. Yes you have lost root, but you can get it back. It's only a matter of what is contained on the SBF.

Incorrect. You get your data/apps back from your google account upon adding your google account UNLESS!!!! you untick the box in the beginning. This sbf touches more than system.
Reply.. I believe he said after he booted everything was back as was. I think we are smart enough to know if we are redownloading the apps dude.

I've a new Razr Maxx XT912 which I'd like to root strictly for the purposes of removing the bloatware and unwanted applications. After doing a bunch of reading it seems like I should:
1. Root the phone using DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su
2. Use Titanium Backup to remove the unwanted applications.
Could someone validate my thinking? If I'm way off or whatever just point me in the right direction. Very technical person here so I'm just looking for a check on my direction.
Thank you!

I'm a noob myself, and the general consensus seems to be that you should use Titanium Backup to freeze the unwanted applications in the case they're needed in the future...
Hope this helps (and it's not a case of the blind leading the blind)
You should root using Doomlords method. Install clockworkmod recovery and then install a custom rom like Arctic.
Most custom roms don't come with any bloatware on it in the first place. You can find clockworkmod recovery for the Razr somewhere here on xda.

well you both are right.. u can remove the ones that u know won't cause issues (prob a thread around for what's suitable n what's not). i've messed around myself altho i only have the razr not the razr maxx. freeze is good way to c if any giv away errors but dont b fooled thinking some are ok until u reboot phone cause some errors surprise ya then lol
not sure if Arctic rom works on there or not but if so, that idea would be really useful.. cuz u can backup ur phone, have a mess around without worries, get to use diff roms which not only have less bloatware but have tweaks that help speed/benefit your phone.
hope that helps!!

I am done with ROMs. There, I said it. The fact is, that they are usually more buggy than the stock ROM, and they really tend to jack things up when you want to revert.
The last one changed the MainVer and I cannot seem to get the phone back to stock. I followed the instructions for fixing Mainver, doesn't work.
Tried to RUU and also use the PH98IMG.Zip from HBoot, but those don't work because the last ROM changed the Mainver so neither of those methods work any more.
I thought I had it fixed by using Scott's CleanFlash tool to push the stock kernel to the phone and it did work for awhile, but now my phone is stuck in a bootloop and I really need to get this fixed, I need to get it to do a real RUU and completely restore the phone to stock. I can then just root it and debloat it and stop messing with ROMs which frankly are never enough benefit to justify the harm and aggravation they cause.
So can someone please point me in the right direction to find a way to correct Mainver so that I can just restore the phone with the latest OTA version of RUU and then leave my phone alone and stop messing it up? LOL

It's not all that bad bro.... ROM'ing = patience + experimentation + phone insurance.
That sucks you have been having so much trouble man. The whole change to a device with a only an unlocked bootloader along with the newer android version is really throwing Devs and Users for a loop. There is a lot to learn.
I hope all these events don't make you stray from flashing forever!
Sorry you've had such bad luck. My experience with custom roms has been the opposite. I've taken mediocre phones with buggy/laggy stock roms and turned them into solid, stable devices. Some of the features and extras baked into custom roms are so nice. I'm running Scott's Clean GB 1.6 and it has been 100% stable. I haven't had any fc's or reboots, and everything works. And no bloat!

Yeah, it really is weird. In a lot of ways, I prefer the DroidX and Motorola experiences I had. They may have an encrypted bootloader, but you could still install ROMs and it sorta helped keep you from messing up the phone, and SDLite always worked for me.
Part of me wonders what the ROM craze is all about. I mean, I fall into it myself, but then I ask myself, why do I do this? I have yet to see a ROM that runs as well as the stock one, once you root and debloat it. Sure, some of them look nice, but when you see what bugs there are, how many things don't work, and then the issues that can come up when you have to revert... I dunno... I start out all jazzed up and then more frustrated than ever when they just never seem to work properly...

I think some of the issue seems to be how much you need all the parts to work flawlessly for work. As far as my usage and what apps I use, I really can't complain about any of the builds. I just text, surf, browse the internet and play games and music. I never use exchange, blue tooth and those seem to be the biggest flaws with the leaks. So for me the experience is totally different. I think it really all depends on the users needs obviously. To bad you can't get work to spring for one phone for you and then you can have your personal phone to play with
But even the stock ROMs piss me off. I just did an RUU, unlocked it, rooted it, tested to make sure SU is installed and updated, and neither TI pro or ROM Toolbox can freeze my bloat apps. And Scott's CleanTool was never updated to work with the latest OTA, so I am left wondering how the hell I am supposed to disable all this crap.
There are definitely days when the iPhone and "just working" look very appealing... sigh...
I also think that part of the problem is that a lot of the apps and things are disjointed and don't work properly. There is no real checks and balances in the Androiud world, no review process. Any college kid taking a programming course is a "software engineer" and the results are that half the apps and stuff out there are hit or miss at best. It takes forever to weed through all the crap to find the one or two apps that actually work right...
This inability to debloat is driving me nuts.
This is what I am talking about, the plethora of **** apps out there that just don't work. ROM Toolbox, granted root access, go in and grab an app like Blockbuster and tell it to Freeze it.
says it is doing it.
Still says that 10 minutes later. Have to manually FC the app and then go back in and try another app. TIB does the same thing.
How the hell can you freeze apps or just delete them if neither ROM Toolbox nor TIB can do it?

Just buy rootexplorer and mount to r/o in system and go to app and either rename all the bloatware to .bak or just delete the apk's you don't want like blockbuster etc.. thats what I did and I am not sure why people freeze over renaming or deleting personally.
by renaming to .bak then if you like you can just delete the .bak and viola app is restored !

I rooted my droid x2 when i first got it, then i realized im too much of a hax noob to mess with this stuff... or atleast I feel that way... I don't know what roms are worth a ****, and i feel like everything would just be better if i could go back to the start and just get auto updates from verizon. Is there a way to unroot the phone so i can just get autoupdates? Is there an easy way to just get an up to date version of the software onto my phone? I know I am supposed to search and all, but ive searched and I can't find anything that completely answers my questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated, if someone can help me just get the updated stock software version onto my phone i would be forever indebted to you.
Cyanogenmod 7. Dzk.
whoa look at that....
So if i download Cyanogenmod 7 is it going to be all bugged out and mess up all the time and run slow and just be all around ****? Or will I just be able to roll with it?
Okay, so check it out, Since you seem to be kind of stressing out The best thing for you to do is to Use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313103 And go back to a 2.3.5 kernel, Then install the ROM eclipse 2.1 think that's a great ROM to get started on and get comfortable. Just take the time to read all instructions Carefully before you do anything. No matter what happens you can typically bring your phone back to life. Cool?

To address your questions...
ROMS: Right now, the best custom ROMs to flash are Eclipse and CM7. Both are excellent. In my experience, I have found Eclipse to be a bit more stable. CM7 does have some bugs, but not everyone has experienced them. Eclipse will give you HDMI access, whereas CM7 will not. CM7 has "theme chooser" which allows you to theme your phone with great ease, whereas Eclipse themes need to be flashed. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either. They are both solid, fantastic ROMs to run.
Unroot/SBF'ing: Moon Shadow made a phenomenal step-by-step post of how to get back to factory settings. It provides all the directions, and even includes the files you need to download in order to complete the factory reset. Follow that post and you'll be back to factory in no time, if that's what you decide you want. You'll find that thread HERE.
Hope this helps!
alright, thanks this is exactly what i needed, I am flashing back to 2.3.4 and im thinking about trying out the cyanogen7 mod. but now that im flashed back to 2.3.4 (or will be soon) will it be like i never rooted the phone in the first place and i will just be able to get auto updates from verizon or what? I mean Im not a complete noob at doing stuff on a computer, are the mods actually worth the trouble and risk or is it more just an option to take up if you are going to be constantly messing with your phone?
Yes they are worth the trouble. And yes it will be back to factory if you flash back to 2.3.4. If you use a custom ROM for a week then go back to the stock ROM You will want to beat your head against the wall because it's such crap in comparison.

Try cm7 1st as it will only flash to 234 leak. Be sure to nandroid BU your stock after you're rooted and bootstraped. This is the BU you will restore to after you try cm and then want to Upgrade to 235 for eclipse.
Get me? No need to sbf between cm7 and eclipse if you save your stock blur BU.

don't stress brotha
flash any ROM you would like
especially if you aren't worried about wiping data and downloading all
your apps again and such
as long as you stick to what's inn this forum you can always just sbf to get back to stock
(also, just being rooted alone wont stop you from being able to take an OTA update pushed by Verizon, you will only have issues if you removed bloat apps or did tweaks or something)
and don't be afraid to private message me, my inbox is always open to help with any questions (just ask a few users I got on their way recently with roms and tweaks and such)
above all, relax read, have fun happy flashing!
(if you couldn't tell, I recommend eclipse, stable, runs like a champ, has hdmi, if you use hdmi trust me on eclipse )

so as long as you have Droidx2 sbf is the most amazing thing ever, it's great bringing your phone back from the dead
(nandroid is also your best friend, always nandroid backup before doing mods or tweaks, cuz if it's something you don't like, you can restore the backup you made prior to doing such mod/tweaks and BOOM, you are right back to where you were! NANDROID- LEARN IT, LOVE IT LIVE IT

Sorry but that is hilarious to me...

The wife & I got our Maxx's last night. After working with it a bit, I think I want to root them to remove bloatware and the locked web pages. I know that stuff doesn't affect performance, but it's annoying to have to scroll past when I'm looking for something else.
From posts here though, it looks like VZW is pushing out the ICS update. So I'm thinking that it might be best for me to wait & get that before I root..
Thoughts?
My razr maxx was already rooted.
I installed voodoo ota rootkeeper from the market.
After protecting my root, i went and performed the download and update.
Once it was finished, i restored my root using voodoo's restore.
Very simple and i still have root access.
I'm not sure about how good/reliable the methods for rooting ics are, but there are plenty of good ones for gingerbread.
It is just a matter of personal preference.

In ICS you can disable the bloat so you wouldn't need to root (although I do suggest it for further customization)
