I need serious help - HTC Rezound

I am done with ROMs. There, I said it. The fact is, that they are usually more buggy than the stock ROM, and they really tend to jack things up when you want to revert.
The last one changed the MainVer and I cannot seem to get the phone back to stock. I followed the instructions for fixing Mainver, doesn't work.
Tried to RUU and also use the PH98IMG.Zip from HBoot, but those don't work because the last ROM changed the Mainver so neither of those methods work any more.
I thought I had it fixed by using Scott's CleanFlash tool to push the stock kernel to the phone and it did work for awhile, but now my phone is stuck in a bootloop and I really need to get this fixed, I need to get it to do a real RUU and completely restore the phone to stock. I can then just root it and debloat it and stop messing with ROMs which frankly are never enough benefit to justify the harm and aggravation they cause.
So can someone please point me in the right direction to find a way to correct Mainver so that I can just restore the phone with the latest OTA version of RUU and then leave my phone alone and stop messing it up? LOL

I think I may have solved it. I think I finally got the Mainver fixed and RUU appears to be working, finally.
But I am still done with ROM's until an ICS OTA is pushed out. LOL
If anyone sees me installing a ROM before then, feel free to kick me in the neck...

It's not all that bad bro.... ROM'ing = patience + experimentation + phone insurance.

That sucks you have been having so much trouble man. The whole change to a device with a only an unlocked bootloader along with the newer android version is really throwing Devs and Users for a loop. There is a lot to learn.
I hope all these events don't make you stray from flashing forever!

Sorry you've had such bad luck. My experience with custom roms has been the opposite. I've taken mediocre phones with buggy/laggy stock roms and turned them into solid, stable devices. Some of the features and extras baked into custom roms are so nice. I'm running Scott's Clean GB 1.6 and it has been 100% stable. I haven't had any fc's or reboots, and everything works. And no bloat!

Glad you got it fixed and working again Squire, what was your hang up by the way with getting the RUU to run ? I know you were having trouble getting it to see your device what ended up being the issue ?

Yeah, it really is weird. In a lot of ways, I prefer the DroidX and Motorola experiences I had. They may have an encrypted bootloader, but you could still install ROMs and it sorta helped keep you from messing up the phone, and SDLite always worked for me.
Part of me wonders what the ROM craze is all about. I mean, I fall into it myself, but then I ask myself, why do I do this? I have yet to see a ROM that runs as well as the stock one, once you root and debloat it. Sure, some of them look nice, but when you see what bugs there are, how many things don't work, and then the issues that can come up when you have to revert... I dunno... I start out all jazzed up and then more frustrated than ever when they just never seem to work properly...

I think some of the issue seems to be how much you need all the parts to work flawlessly for work. As far as my usage and what apps I use, I really can't complain about any of the builds. I just text, surf, browse the internet and play games and music. I never use exchange, blue tooth and those seem to be the biggest flaws with the leaks. So for me the experience is totally different. I think it really all depends on the users needs obviously. To bad you can't get work to spring for one phone for you and then you can have your personal phone to play with

But even the stock ROMs piss me off. I just did an RUU, unlocked it, rooted it, tested to make sure SU is installed and updated, and neither TI pro or ROM Toolbox can freeze my bloat apps. And Scott's CleanTool was never updated to work with the latest OTA, so I am left wondering how the hell I am supposed to disable all this crap.
There are definitely days when the iPhone and "just working" look very appealing... sigh...

I also think that part of the problem is that a lot of the apps and things are disjointed and don't work properly. There is no real checks and balances in the Androiud world, no review process. Any college kid taking a programming course is a "software engineer" and the results are that half the apps and stuff out there are hit or miss at best. It takes forever to weed through all the crap to find the one or two apps that actually work right...

This inability to debloat is driving me nuts.
This is what I am talking about, the plethora of **** apps out there that just don't work. ROM Toolbox, granted root access, go in and grab an app like Blockbuster and tell it to Freeze it.
says it is doing it.
Still says that 10 minutes later. Have to manually FC the app and then go back in and try another app. TIB does the same thing.
How the hell can you freeze apps or just delete them if neither ROM Toolbox nor TIB can do it?

EDIT: Also, there are other apps that can freeze other apps, I think. Can't remember the name of them, but I think they're out there.

Yeah, well if something can go wrong for me, it will.
I did a straight RUU, fully restored to stock. Unlocked. Rooted. Installed SU and updated it, and I cannot debloat any of the **** apps.
This used to work. It worked on my GF's Rezound last week, same OS, same OTA, same exact process, but when I do it, it just sits there doing nothing.

That sucks. I've had TiBu hang on backups and restores, but never on freezes. That's really strange. I would look for another app. You could try something like this. Just buy it and try for a second and then refund if it doesn't work right away. Just a thought. Hope it gets better for you.

Just buy rootexplorer and mount to r/o in system and go to app and either rename all the bloatware to .bak or just delete the apk's you don't want like blockbuster etc.. thats what I did and I am not sure why people freeze over renaming or deleting personally.
by renaming to .bak then if you like you can just delete the .bak and viola app is restored !

I was trying to picture the screen and was seeing the r/o at the top.. lol have to press that to change to read/ write to alter the actually files.

Tried that and even after renaming and rebooting, most of the apps are still in the app drawer...
The bottom line is that the last ROM I tried really screwed up my phone. I may have to smash it and get a new one under my insurance plan...

Now, that is wierd did you try deleting them or just moving the apk's onto your SD card from the folder if you wanted to keep them ? There is no reason this shouldn't work that I can think of .

I may root my phone just to get froyo, but is it safe?

Ok, I was thinking about maybe using that one click root app I found on the market but i need to know how safe is it? and is there a fully awesomely working version of Froyo out there or even gingerbread I can use and if so how do I install it?
And when the official froyo update comes out will my phone still be able to revive the over the air update?
Using the OCLF/Root was completely safe and easy, for me at least.
No issues at all doing it, it went very smooth with no issues at all.
Yes -- you can still receive OTA updates once you've rooted.
Ian
def no gingerbread out there for you to run
uhmmm i think if you arent even sure how to root, maybe you shouldnt get yourself into a beta rom.

Safe as in what? Secure wise or bricking your device? The Vibrant is easy to root but secure wise you need to be careful since your device will be "open" to any program getting root access.
I see people use the click app to root their phones. Check it out on YouTube that's where I found the info. Personally I am not going to root my cuz I don't want to deal with the headaches. Yes I have root one android phone before & was successful. I enjoy putting different roms but when I flash CM6 one his first updates on that then later on couldn't change the rom. The reason cuz I had a low memory I was told on the phone internally. So I am taking no chances with phone.

Too much work. Easier to add ps.
I be posting this from my wicked awesome vibrant!
Before Rooting....
1) learn how to use the keyboard
2) find out what Froyo and the consequences of installing a beta are
3) No, if you install Froyo probably you won't be able to get the OTA update when available and, you may not be able to roll down if you want to.
I would stay out of it if i was you
not worthy to just root to flash the leaked Froyo... You only get the 'skin' of Froyo.. there is no JIT and GPS is not working
I would not root, because judging by you, you dont know much about android.
Few devices have froyo,
No devices have gingerbread.
If you think gingerbread, or even froyo is out then chances are you dont know how to use root features.
ps. I am not flaming, k?

I understand what your saying, and believe me I know a lot about android and actually a little bit about rooting but I am super paranoid about bricking my phone for two reasons:
I love my phone.
I had to pay full price for it.
What I don't understand that much is about different roms and whatnot. As for the Gingerbread thing I was kidding, but I was serious about the Froyo thing...but after reading this thread i have decided that if I do ever root with the one click root app it will only me to install simple things like lag fix, adfree, etc. Thank you for your help.
To do it again, I would not root mine. It has been less stable since I rooted it. Crashes to a black screen that says "user fault not kernel panic" and "upload mode". This is using a simple one-click root. So I advise against it.
What you'd find, should a problem occur, is that there is no going back. Folks recommend install this patch and that patch, and deeper down the rabbit hole (further away from stock) you go.

Work Phone - Should I Install a Rom?

Well my work just got a bunch of iPhones and the CEO got one of the. He had the Samsung before so I got it as an upgrade over my crackberry.
Now I really want to install a custom rom/kernel on the phone but I am hesitating because its really not my phone and my work owns it.
What do you guys think should I stick with stock or should I root the phone and install a rom?
Stock. There's nothing like explaining to the boss how you f'd up company equipment.
I dont know if one should/should not install custom roms on a work phone, as I don't have one. But I can tell you that if you do decide to root and install one of the custom roms, it's not that hard to unroot and go back to stock later on when you need to return the phone. There are several threads here that will guide you through the process too.

Used my fascinating voodoo powers
I seriously discourage doing anything to it. It's not yours for one, and (no disrespect to the devs ofcourse, their work is amazing) there really isnt anything spectacular for this phone at the moment due to samsung's failure to provide any source code. To be more specific... our kernels suck.
And oh yea this shouldve been in the Q&A section so be ready for ashasaur to move this thread. (hes really good at doing that )
Depends on your comfort level, and of course, your corporate policies.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
I would say root your phone at the most. It's fairly easy to recover from just rooting, but flashing roms/kernels/modems is much more risky. At least with rooting, you could fairly easily freeze the bloat with TiBu and have a more functional phone. Thawing everything and un-rooting would have you a stock phone back fairly quickly, and you could also still receive OTA updates as well.
I say go for it if anything goes wrong all you have to do is odin back to stock it removes everything its as simple as plugging the phone in load the stock file and click start I've done this countless times
We pick our work cell phones specifically because of the potential customization we can do. I hate being stuck with some company's version of what they think will be useful to me in my job. I can Odin this phone back to stock/factory defaults in less than 5 minutes if need be, so customizing this phone and expanding its abilities, and recovering from those customizations quickly, were what attracted me to it.
Android is Android, whether it's Samsung's stock version or one of the dev's version of it. Your phone is still going to perform the same tasks you need it to for your job. As long as you are both competent with the technologies involved and confident in your ability to restore to stock, I don't see why you should hesitate from exploring the options that are out there, especially when Froyo source drops and we see an explosion of dev-created customizations/enhancements.
Really? If your asking for advice on whether to mess with a business owned phone, it makes me wonder are you the ceo's mail clerk?
SuperClean2.9.1vNitroDark
Personally for a work phone, I'd update it for better usage in my work.
Increasing battery life usage duration.
Less irritating buggy glitches.
Removing the idiotic TW/BING/VZW craps. (too many add-on hacks from google default causing reliability and dependability problems)
Adding Backup and Restore nandroid for possible failures and migrations.
I suggest DJ05 + SuperClean + Blaze v2.3.1R2.

AT&T Software Update

Hey, I looked around but couldn't find a thread about this (so please dont kill me if I missed one).
I just did a 'check for update' on my AT&T SGS2, and it apparently found one. It immediately started downloading it, without letting me pause/stop it. I shut down the phone within a few seconds, restarted it, but it started to download it right away again. I tried to find the process and kill it (it's apparently called Device Management), but it completed the download before I could. It then asked me if I want to install the update or postpone it for a few hours. I chose the latter option, since I'm concerned if this update could cause me more problems or if it's actually worth installing.
I have the standard ROM, albeit with some modifications. It's rooted, has the CWM recovery installed, and a custom kernel to allow me to OC it.
Has anyone installed this new software update yet? Does it have anything worthwhile? Will it cause me to lose my root/kernel/CWM? If so, would it lock my device down and prevent me from re-rooting it, etc. again?
Assuming I don't want the update, there doesn't seem to be an 'undo' option. I imagine I can use Titanium to roll the DeviceManager app back to before I chose the update and make it forget I ever asked. I had assumed that when clicking 'check for update' that it would ASK me if I wanted it first. Guess not.
In any case, any suggestions/feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

This has already been covered, it's the 2.3.6 update. Don't do anything other than flash the file uploaded here to your device using Odin.
You really couldn't find anything on this?
If you've rooted your phone and removed any of the bloatware then letting the update continue will result in it not being able to complete. It will leave your phone as it is.

I checked the first few pages and didn't see anything about it. Later last night I found a couple threads that discussed the results in the update (ie: upgrading the OS to 2.3.6, which I didn't know was what this was for).
In any case, after the update downloaded and I postponed it, I wiped the DeviceManagement data (19ish MB), so I assume this will make it forget.

I didn't know if there was an update or what it was for. I had assumed that 'Check for Update' would do just (and only) that - check. Every other software program that had a similar feature would 'check', and if it found something, ask if you wanted to download/install it. Some would also tell you what the update was for or what it was updating. I assumed that would have been the case here.
Based on what I've found, it seems like the 2.3.6 update isn't really worth it, and has caused problems for others, so I'll hold off until ICS comes out.

What's the point of that? If you are running the latest UnNamed ROM then you are already on 2.3.6 there would be no point of updating to the official AT&T version.

My phone is working fine and with the exception of the 'lock screen bug' that I would love to have fixed, i don't see any reason to upgrade.
However I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

Let the jury be absolved. 2.3.6, to make it clear, is very, very, very, very, bad, bad, bad, bad. Breaks HID bluetooth devices, has many issues, and is simply a stopgap between 2.3.4 and 4.0. Why they released such a **** version is beyond me.

[Q] Specific ROM Help

OK, so I haven't posted much in this forum in general because I haven't had a need to really. I find what I need read and move on. But because of that I can't post in the developer section to ask this question before I flash this ROM so I will ask it here. So I'm going to take the plunge and flash Newts NOS m7 ROM. But after reading about 60% of a 949 page thread I do have some confusion. There were some updates and patches I'm going to call them for a lack of better term. I don't need to run any type of beast mode kernel. So what patches or fixes do I need to add in order for everything to work on this ROM? And I'm choosing this one over the alpha Sense 5 ROM based on data working with Verizon and not working with the alpha. At least nothing has been posted that it's working in all aspects now. I appreciate the help and hope that I can be rocking the NOS rom by tonight before I go to bed.
Really? No help out of 60 views?

If you install the full rom, you don't need any of the patches.
Well I have the full app plus a couple of the other downloads that are mentioned to have off the bat. But has the ROM download been updated with the patches that fix stuff? Thank you for your response by the way.

3.0.7 is the only thing you need to have as of today it contains everything, patches are minor small updates and newtoroot usually will tell you what patch you need when they are released.

So you are saying that the kernel patch, the call patch, and the other patch are all included in the 3.0.7 build and I shouldn't worry about them even though people are having issues with the ROM in certain areas such as what the patches fix? I'm asking for clarification because I can't afford to screw up my one and only phone. Besides Viper Rom this Nos 7 Rom seems to be the best out there for what I want until the update comes out. This is me being cautious and doing my research. I don't want to sound like a jerk. Just trying to have everything lined up right.

Again.... just install the full rom. All is included.. Don't see how you could be confused with that statement.

All you really need to worry about if it says full Rom or not. If it is a full Rom flash it after that there is nothing else to do.

Thanks for the help. I should just take the plunge but like I said before I'm just trying to do all the research that I need and to be as well read on it before I just jump into something. I'm not a first time rooter or flasher of ROM's. This one just has me timid because even the latest posts in the thread of the ROM is saying there are data issues. So I hope you can see where my concern is coming from. I'll flash it tomorrow and see what happens from there though.
OK, so I just took the plunge and did the flash. One problem I have right off the bat is that Gmail keeps closing and failing. I can't have that because all of my most important e-mails come in thru that. So is there a fix or do I just have to go back to stock?

Never heard of that issue. I would just re-wipe and re-install the rom.

Did you even wipe data or did you just install the rom and hope that you wouldn't have to do anything about your already installed apps?
Seriously??!! Oh just install the ROM it's totally fine. Yeah well it's not fine. GMAIL is broke and I HAVE TO HAVE IT WORK!! Come on people help me out!!

You won't get any help if you don't tell us what you did..... I have never heard of ANY rom that gmail doesn't work.
and YELLING AT PEOPLE DOESN'T HELP EITHER.
Well, it wasn't meant to come out as yelling. And I didn't do anything but install the ROM just like everyone kept telling me to do. Oh and the weather on the lock screen is broke too. It always says no weather data available.
Well nothing like feeling even more of an ass. I never saw the replies I had already gotten from you guys. I guess my page wouldn't refresh. I'll wipe it and re flash it on I guess. I did all the stuff I needed to do before flashing it so I"m in the clear on that one. I'm not sure as to what all the extra apps that I've never seen before are but I'm ok with that for now. Oh, um isn't there suppose to be a swipe screen to wake feature on this ROM? I can't find it.
So G-mail is back to working now. I reflashed the ROM and did a cache and dalvik cache wipe. I also did the lock screen patch and volume to wake patch. I still don't have weather on the lock screen though. And the little click sounds that are turned on for me for when I unlock or lock the screen....yeah I can't hear them.
So, everything works now. Go figure....well minus those sounds that for some reason I actually really really liked having turned on before I flashed this. Maybe they will just start working again too.

So, in other words, all of your problems were self inflicted.
Do the flashing process properly next time and you won't have these issues.
Nope not self inflicted. I did the flash exactly the way I was suppose to. Not sure why flashing it a second time worked but it did. Now to figure out how my nanddroid back up got deleted.....or if it's just hidden and I don't know where it is. I use TWRP recovery by the way.

Ok so what now?

Ok so I'm fairly new to the whole rooting thing but I have been studying up quite abit. Lots of really good videos on youtube!! So I'm just looking for some direction on what kind of things I can/should do now that I have rooted my phone. Here is the break down so far:
Rooted - Towelroot
Root Browser Installed
BusyBox Installed
Safestrap Installed and backup saved
Titanium Back Up Installed. Most Bloatware has been safely removed with no issues thus far
SuperSu Installed
Terminal Emulator Installed
CPU Tuner installed but have absolutely no clue what I am doing - still researching this
I think that is about it. So any tipps on next direction would greatly be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance

O yes my S4 is NC5 and stock rom
Make phone calls... or browse the internet.
Mine does facebook good.
All the root, customization , ect. is just to make it do what YOU want it to do. If there isn't something your trying to get it to do that it doesn't... There isn't really a what next, be happy.
If there IS something your trying to get it to do that it doesn't... that next.
edit: though if your not using a custom rom you should probably freeze the program that controls OTA updates. Hopefully someone can chime in with what its called... Been awhile and I forget, and just flashed a rom instead of worrying about it last time I updated my phone.
Like you, I've frozen/killed/uninstalled all the crapware I could. Beyond that, all I've done is installed the Google Launcher. My phone is well behaved and pretty responsive, with minimal lag.
All I would really want at this point is an unlocked bootloader so I could install a straight Google ROM.

I'm on NC5 and have been happily running GPE ROM for quite awhile now. Only problem is the Kernel difference so there's no USB transfer.
Thanks for the reply's. Yeah I don't really game or anything. Heck I don't even Facebook lol but I would like to Play around with getting better battery life and maybe a little speed. Not that I really need too, the response is very good and the lag is only noticeable at times. I want to play around with the CPU tuner but I'm nervous about messing something up and I have not installed a new Kernel yet and from what I have read that is a must.

NO! Installing a new kernel on SafeStrap NC5 is not a must! It will brick your phone! You can use TW based ROMS and one or two very special AOSP Roms, no new kernels though!

I use android tuner for my tuning needs. Really expansive options and a really great app. If you want a really light ROM fort SS GPE ROMs are about 400-500MB. Gets rid of clunky touchwiz and solely runs on Google Now Launcher. Only bummer is the loss of the Touchwiz camera app.

HyperDrive is solid and a good ROM for those newer to 'all this' IMO. I am on BlackBox which is stupid fast and has great battery life but is a little buggy. I've had it on my phone for over a week now and have no plans of taking it off anytime soon. But it's up to you now. Just make sure you wipe everything before you flash, always make a backup beforehand and only flash ROM's that are proven on your device and your bootloader and you will be money. Also, read read read the threads before flashing.

it's called SDM in the system portion... and I would get lucky patcher and black mart alpha installed to. these give you access to everything and all the paid apps too.
Add a tethering/hotspot app.
