Nokia Lumia 800 (Black) Review
By XDA member Warren.D
Here’s a review I did for Nokia as they were generous enough to send me a Lumia 800. If I have missed out anything in particular or you have a request/question, inbox me and I’ll do what I can.
Pictures to follow Shortly.
Included in the box:
- Nokia Lumia 800
- Headphones (Without extra buds)
- USB cable
- AC adapter
- Phone Case
- Documentation & Manuals.
Nokia was kind enough to include a rubberised protection case in the box, its rather good quality too, although it can be quite fiddly to fit it on. One downfall I found was that they didn’t include any spare ear buds for the headphones, though I had some spares laying around. The headphones themselves are rather good quality too, they’re sturdy and they sound more than adequate.
Design & Build
Height - 116.5mm
Width – 61.2mm
Thickness – 12.1mm
Weight – 142g
The Apple iPhone now has a serious Rival. The Lumia 800 is truly a beautiful device you can clearly tell that Nokia has put a lot of thought and effort into the design of this phone. It’s resembles the N9 but has a smaller display and touch capacitive buttons. It’s available in 3 colours, Black, Cyan and Magenta.
In no way does the Lumia 800 feel heavy or bulky. It’s made from a single piece of polycarbonate plastic therefore the phone feels very sturdy in the hand, it has sufficient grip (without the case), and has a nice premium feel and Its extremely comfortable to use, even for prolonged periods. The 3.7inch Corning Gorilla Glass display has curved edges making it feel more natural to use, Swiping left to right is an absolute breeze. Nokia included their ‘AMOLED ClearBlack’ technology and the display really is vibrant and crisp. The blacks are truly black, you cannot tell where the display ends when you’ve selected the black WP7 theme. Also unlike my Galaxy S II, the screen does not collect fingerprints!
The 3.5mm headphone jack is located at the top, making it easy to hold and insert into your pocket when listening to music. Next to the jack, we have the Micro-USB/Charging Port which is located under a little door. Although it looks like it is fiddly to use and people have reported that its flimsy, it really isn’t anything to worry about, It helps keep the dust out. Once you have the charging door open you can slide the Micro-SIM slot to the side and it releases, allowing you to insert or change the Micro-SIM. It’s really easy and saves using a battery cover and ruining the ‘seamless’ design of the phone.
Located on the left hand side is the volume rocker, power key and dedicated camera key. The camera key is a welcome addition; you can activate the camera in standby and take a quick snap within seconds, even when using a pass code lock. Though if you do use a pass code it will not allow access to anything other than the camera application, meaning the security of your device isn’t under threat. Located on the bottom we have the loudspeaker and on the back is the 8 Megapixel Carl Zeiss Camera, and a Dual LED flash.
Camera
The Nokia Lumia 800 features an 8 Megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics, 2.2 aperture, Dual LED flash, Auto focus and touch to focus, max resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels, HD video recording up to 720p, Geo-tagging and many more features
I’m no camera expert but the quality of the pictures I have taken so far have all been crystal clear and sharp. The dedicated camera key is brilliant, a feature that I wish my Galaxy S II had. Even when I have viewed the pictures on my laptop they are crystal clear. The HD video recording is brilliant too, and the sound levels are more than adequate. I’m sure the Lumia 800 will do an excellent job capturing all those moments in your life.

Operating system and Applications
The Nokia Lumia 800 runs Windows Phone 7.5 mango, and does a good job of it too, Nokia have really worked their magic. It’s very fluid, snappy and smooth as butter. It really is a smooth experience, I can’t stress that enough. WP7 is still making a name for itself in the fast paced Smartphone economy and I’m sure this device is going to bring the platform a lot of attention. You won’t come across all the apps you’d find in the Android Market or iOS app store but the apps available for WP7 is on the increase as more developers are taking interest. Many of the most popular apps are available in the WP7 marketplace.
Nokia have included three exclusive apps,
Nokia Drive
Turn by turn voice navigation. This app is very useful and has been implemented well. It’s very accurate, and the GPS is spot on and locks with satellites within seconds. You can download the maps free of charge within the application; this saves you from worrying about losing your signal and the maps not loading. There’s a useful toggle in the application to switch between Day/Night modes. Each mode provides a better viewing experience during the day and night. Night mode also decreases the brightness of the display making it less of a distraction whilst trying to keep your eyes on the road!
Nokia Maps
The maps application isn’t much different than the preinstalled bing maps. It offers the option to view local popular places, public transport and search. If you live in Scotland and you’re about to have a weekend break in London, You’re able to tap London into the search option, and then see the nightlife, shopping centres, public attractions in the area, and on top of that you can see reviews and contact details for these places. Pretty awesome!
Nokia Music
This app is really cool! Music fans are going to love it. You can find gigs near your current location, it provide the dates of the gigs, where they’re held at and even provides directions to get to the venue! You can listen to mix radio within the app, and even download mix radio playlists for offline listening, then once you’re connected to Wifi you can refresh the playlist to bring it up to date. You can update using 3G, although it’ll be a data hog and isn’t advised unless you truly have an unlimited data plan. The app will also recommend artists that are similar to your favourites, via the mp3 store that’s built in. You can create your own music profile, which works by collecting data from your downloaded music and pc, to ultimately give you personalised genre mixes.
Apps included in the OS
Internet Explorer is one of the most brilliant mobile browsers I have used. It’s simple, very snappy, and pages load with extremely fast with minimal page rendering. Pinch to zoom is so smooth!
Corporate and business users are going to welcome the addition of Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office in the palm of their hand. My other half tried the Exchange and it fully synced all of the contacts, calendar meetings/appointments and emails. I personally don’t use these two applications, but many users are going to find them extremely useful.
The People Hub is amazing since the mango update; it has everything your social life craves. It keeps all your social network updates in once easy to use place. You’re able to merge several different accounts within the hub, which saves you switching between different applications. The user interface is simplistic yet smart; it updates all your feeds quickly, so there’s not much waiting.
Within the text messaging application, Facebook chat and Windows live messenger have been implemented and it works well. This again, saves you from switching between multiple apps.
Gaming
With integrated XBOX live, the Lumia 800 will suffice all your gaming needs. I did a comparison between the Lumia 800 and my Galaxy S II with the Sims 3 game, the Nokia with a single core processor clocked at 1400 Mhz and half the RAM always loaded the game much quicker. I had the same result loading Angry Birds on both devices. The graphics on the Nokia are very good, as with most Windows Phone 7 devices. If you love to game, you’ll love this phone for sure.
System updates and Battery Life
Nokia has already rolled out updates to iron out bug fixes, and bring improvements.. The latest update Nokia provided vastly improved the battery life, it now lasts more than a day easily. Also after the latest update Audio quality through the earpiece and loudspeaker are louder and clearer. I believe Nokia are planning to roll out another update in early 2012, with bug fixes and with further battery life enhancements.
Summary
Nokia has done an excellent job with Lumia 800. The handset is good looking, and the build quality is outstanding. The hardware really enhances the operating system and the whole experience of Windows Phone 7. The device has loads of potential, and I’m sure it’s going to pull more people across from Android and iOS. It’s has the wow factor and it always catches someone’s eye. Anyone considering buying this device should take the plunge, I’m sure you won’t regret it.
Thank you, I am with sprint but thinking of switching to att so I can use this phone. Love it

Its not finished. I've pictures and videos to add yet. Also Im going to add a section about the audio quality and an in depth section about the display.
If anyone has anything specific they want included in this, then request away.

Boring question, but what's the case like? I too got mine from Nokia, but without it (the cases cardboard sleeve was there, but empty) so have resorted to an eBay gel effort.
Re: Case
The soft black case fits tightly to the contours of the screen, and back camera, so tight that several people thought it was the case for the phone until I slipped it off. There's a hole at the bottom for the speakers and one at the top for the usb port. The 4 holes on the button side are all slightly recessed allowing for even better button access, for those in-jacket volume changes.
Just search for CC-1031 Nokia and you should see some links for Nokia Europe Accessories page with info on these soft cover cases.

As what weetigo said. The case is snug. Try contacing nokia customer service and explain to them you didn't recieve one. They may send one out.

No one in the test group I'm part of got one... maybe I'll ask on the off chance, can't see them mailing one from Helsinki though. The eBay one isn't bad, sounds very similar in fact, very snug, recessed button holes etc. Only thing I don't like is the lack of protection for the top edge, but I don't see what can be done about that due to access needs.
Edit: Googled the official one, only difference seems to be that the SIM tray is blocked by the Nokia one and the eBay one doesn't have a divider between vol+ & -
Is the Galaxy S II worth to be swapped to Lumia 800?
That's like asking us what clothes you should wear today ! Only you know what YOU like, play with the phone yourself and decide and choose what to do

Personally No. I use so many apps that aren't available on WP7 yet. I do love WP7 though. Its personal taste, if the apps were there I'd happily switch between platforms.

I just switched from Galaxy S II to Lumia 800 and yup, it's a downgrade primarily because of the apps. I miss Google Maps a lot. Having said that, Lumia 800 is a very good phone in its own right.
I just moved from a galaxy nexus to a lumia. WP7 os is enough for me and it has the apps I use.
Nice review! Thanks!
I had a LG e900 and now I also have a Lumia 800. There are 3 things that are in my opinion a step back in relation to the lower end and older LG e900:
- Sound quality – Its really bad in my opinion.
- Autonomy (Nokia has stated that an update will be issued beginning next year to address battery issues)
- Screen – AMOLED is great but the pattern of the screen makes small letters harder to read. The LG LCD is better in that respect.
There are 4 things missing from a high-end phone like this:
- HDMI output
- Front facing camera
- More RAM! N9 has 64GB! Lumia only as 16.
- Inner-ear headphones. Going back from those to the ones provided in the box is not a good experience.
Really like the phone but there is room for improvement.
You should remember that Lumia 800 is not a high-end phone. It is only a mid range phone. The high end models are yet to be unveiled.

Well... there are devices on the same price range that have some of the features I mentioned. LG Optimus 2X for instance is being sold in Portugal for about 300 euro and the Lumia at best is over 400. The LG has fullhd recording capabilities, its duo core, tegra 2, and has a front facing camera. Thats what Windows Phone and Nokia are competing with.
I would not trade my Lumia for the LG mind you. But I still believe that the price range for Lumia should at the very least include some more storage and a front facing camera (after all it was one of the updates that Mango had in line to support).
Cheers
Is this the same phone as the Lumia 710 coming out for T-Mobile next month?

Definitely not. The Lumia 710 is the "budget" phone of the family, whereas the Lumia 800 is the midrange.

Optimus 2X is a year old model. When it hit the market the price was over 500 euros.

I'm a first time Android user (I'm a former employee of T-Mobile so I messed around with a lot of phones so I'm not new to the Android game) and I have been a Nokia user my whole life. I bought my Amaze 2 weeks ago for 1 purpose.
My Comcast internet sucks for my Xbox Live so I bought the Amaze to use as my HotSpot. Other than that, there are pros and cons of this phone.
The phones I had previously for the past 6 years are Nokia 6680, Nokia N95, Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 and the Nokia N8. As you can see, I only used Nokia. I realized some major differences from Nokia and HTC.
The Pros:
- Beautiful, clear and vivid 4.3″ screen
- Super fast (Overclocked at 1.73GHz)
- Very durable and strong
- A built in Task Manager
- Running on T-Mobile HSPA+ 42mb network
- Can have the bootloader unlocked so you can root and install a custom ROM (do at your own risk)
The Cons:
- Original battery doesn’t last as long (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The camera is not the greatest. I say it's a POS compared to my Nokia N8
- The sound quality in a phone call is horrible (Compared to my Nokia N8)
- The useless capacitive Search button (Waste of space)
My N8 has a better aluminum casing. It's actually scratch resistant. I never had a scratch mark on it.
I definitely miss Nokia's durability and hardware but I just wish Nokia had caught up with the market.
Now tell me what you like about your Amaze compared to your other phones. This should also help people who are looking to buy an Amaze to get a better idea of it and to hear what people have to say about it.
it is becoming annoying every prospective buyer of the amaze opening a new thread whether or not to buy the phone, what the issues are etcetc. anyways solid built phone, camera is great, screeen is awesome, battery doesnt last too long, sometimes overheats but no worries wont burn your fingers, some complain about the screen bleed but I dont find it a big deal, microphone sucks if u were to record something. thats pretty much it.
I love the qHD resolution. It's beautiful on the 4.3in screen (to be fair I loved it on the Sensation as well, still do ). The build quality is nice. I like the weight of it in my hand. It's fast, (even though I've been too lazy to unlock the bootloader...and spoiled by having true S-off on my Sensation.). I do love the camera. It seems to take brighter pics (with less noise) than my Sensation ....and I'm really happy since TMo released the WiFi calling update recently.
Sent....from the desk of Pipsqueak O.
I bought HTC Amaze instead of HTC Sensation because of these four reasons.
-headset/Speaker loudness
-more storage/ram/cpu
-dust get into battery case through microphone.
-NFC
Right now, all of my family members are using HTC Amaze as their dash cam, Amaze have never reboot during recording even it runs real hot. I never thought this little phone able to record non-stop 1hour 1080p video
The phone was running hot but very clear enough to read license plate of passing cars with the right condition. ( due to my sh*ttty T-mobile OEM car kit )

I would have the Nokia 800 for a try, because i have heard about the beauty of the SAMOLED+ and the Lumia 800 has a 4.3-Inch screen, which is considered as big phone.
But if you want to go for Titan , it is fine too. I have bad experiences with Nokia phones so i don;t really want to use them even i know they are good. Just a personal feeling.
But i think most people would choose the Lumia 800 over Titan, since it has the better design (Higher Eye-Candy level, not sure about Build quality) , for sure a better camera, a better screen with acceptable size.
I just love a massive screen and the 2 -piece of metal design of Titan, that is why i bought it.
The lumia 800 has a 3.7 inch pentile screen. I don't know if the screen in the lumia 900 is a + panel, but the one in the lumia 800 is not.

Personally I think the Titan wins hands down.
I've had the Titan since November time, and love it. I was sceptical as it's such a big phone, and personally I'd go for 4.3 as the perfect screen / portability size, but less than 4.3 is too small, so the Titan was my only option for a gen 2 phone.
I can't fault it - the screen is brilliant, the build quality is top notch, the performance is faultless. I've played around with the Lumia in stores, and it's a nice phone, but the screen's too small, plain and simple, and without a FFC I just don't see why anyone would buy a gen 1 phone when there are several gen 2 readily available.
For me very is fault on Nokia its construction. On many forums is discussed the creaking housing after a few months of use... On Lumia 800 or N9 with the same construction...
And little display size of course, Titan´s bigger display is fantastic
Lumia 800 has a non-user-replaceable battery,and that's a big -

Totally agree. I can't speak to the build quality of the 800 having never seen it, and while I KNOW it's superior to the Titan, that is REALLY hard for me to imagine, because the Titan is solid and beautiful to me!
Well, the Titan has just dropped to £383.99 ($592.07) on Handtec.co.uk. If it was Amazon, clove or expansys i would by now, but I've heard really mixed reviews of Handtec. Some people say its fine, but lots of people say they sent the wrong item or it was damaged or came weeks, sometimes even months late, even after paying for next day delivery. Has anyone here brought their Titan or any other phone on Handtec.co.uk? Cheers.
I own both phones, and have run then each for a month.
I came to the end of my Lumia month a few days ago, and I was grateful to get my hands back on the Titan.
The Lumia is a beautiful phone, sure. And it feels great in the hand. The USB port is just wrong, with its little flap and positioned on the top as it is. Audio on the Lumia is dreadful - there is no bottom end at all, either thru the speaker or headphones. Its all mid-hi range with no depth to any music.
And although the deep-black pentile screen on the Lumia looks good at a first glance, the reality is that you will notice the pixelation too often, and compared to the Titan there is a noticeable yellow haze across the screen. Whites are horrible in comparison. Sure, the dpi is less on the Titan, but there is no practical drawback in daily usage, and due to the pentile grid on the Lumia, the Titan actually feels better quality.
The camera on the Titan is also much better, with a ton more options than the Lumia. Lumia is OK for a cameraphone, the Titan surprises with its capability.
One area the Lumia has the edge is its power button - I like it on the side. The Titan is a BIG reach for the power button on top, and it is so flush that sometimes its fiddly to actually press it. Not cool. Why oh why can't all WP makers have the windows button wake up the phone, as LG have done on the Optimus?!
Nokia has tried to bring value with its Drive/Music/Maps apps...but can't say I miss them. gMaps pro does it all, and POIs on google seem to be better and more current. If Nokia shared with Bing maps, it would be a powerful rival, I guess...
Nokia Drive is kind of cool, but really, you can't add/edit POIs, you still need a data connection for routing...if this is your reason for buying the Lumia, go with the Titan and buy Turn-by-Turn instead.
Nokia Music is so-so, nothing that MarketPlace doesn't offer except the gig guide and Mix Radio. Gigs can be searched and Mix Radio...well Spotify anyone? Or even SmartDJ and ZunePass. I guess the advantage of Mix Radio is that it's free but its not a deal breaker for me.
I am still waiting for 8107 updates on both devices, so the jury is out on which has better update support at the moment.
I certainly get more comments on the Lumia's beauty as a design, but people are more overwhelmed with the sheer gargantuan impressiveness of the Titan. I then invite people to try it in the pocket and the reaction is always the same..."wow its like its not even there"...the Titan is so slim, its size is irrelevant.
The Titan battery is far superior to the Lumia. Yeah I am still waiting on "battery fix" from Nokia, but the Titan has it for me, no sweat. I can easily manage a whole day with my usage pattern, whereas the Lumia I need a charger by mid-afternoon. I went away for a weekend and didn't use the phone, but it lasted from 4pm Friday to 7pm Sunday with 20% remaining for calls/txts on the way home. That is what a phone should do!
So yeah, my Mum gets the Lumia, I will keep the Titan

Thanks very much for the comprehensive review of both devices. I just went for it and ordered the Titan for £412 from Handtec Hopefully be here tomorrow (Friday) Going to have to download the BA app and use the phone as a boarding pass for my flight to Orlando in a couple of weeks Thanks again. I look forward to being a part of the Titan boards here on XDA.

hope they send you the right phone. I ordered the titan car kit from handtec a few weeks ago. They sent me the docking cradle and were rubbish trying to sort it out. I ended up cancelling the order but at least they didn't want the cradle back after first insisting I return it at my expense!

Good choice mate. Moving over from android to titan and liking it so far but missing the apps. Still got the sensation XL just in case.
Did it arrive!?
It did! And its f***ing awesome. I love it so far. Camera is great, screen is beautiful, no lag at all (which I had quite a bit of on the omnia 7), very good battery life so far. Its on charge atm so using my galaxy nexus and I have to admit the nexus' screen is far superior, but that's the only thing about it that is. It took ages to download my emails, check my twitter/Facebook/forums and send a few texts. Thanks for everyone's opinions !

I've come up with a list of differences between the two devices, could you comment on how significant each of the items in the list are and possibly add to the list.
Nokia Lumia 920:
Super sensitive screen for glove typing
Pure Motion HD+ screen
Less glare and reflection on screen (is that true?)
Deeper blacks (is that true?)
Oleophobic layer on screen (how effective is it?)
2000 mAh battery (how do the battery lives compare?)
Gyroscope
Dolby audio support (is it just a gimmick?)
Nokia apps (how significant of an advantage do they have?)
HTC Windows Phone 8X:
Beats audio (how much better is the audio?)
342ppi screen (how much better does it look?)
Reportedly more comfortable design (is it really?)
Which phone's camera is faster to start up and take the first shot and then consecutive shots?
Which phone is more comfortable to type with one hand?
I'd really really appreciate it if someone could answer my questions. Thanks.

Nokia apps are awesome. Especially Maps/navigation, huge improvement.
The 920 Screen is amazing. Extremely usable in bright sun, the HTC Screen is close to useless in sun light. Personally I find the 920 screen the best I have seen on a mobile device but I am a more of a "vivid/bright/accurate blacks/good in sunlight" guy than "This phone represents the true colors of the world". I can't stand HTC screens.
The 920 is heavier, but feels like a better built phone holding them both in hand.
Ok, i have both of these handsets. I have a black HTC 8x and a white lumia 920.
All i can say is i wont be back on the htc 8x anytime soon, in fact ever. The lumia 920 is just one absolutely incredible phone, the software Nokia has preinstalled such as Nokia maps and music are absolutely fantastic.
The only thing some people might dislike is the weight, which personally i love! The iphone 5 feels like a toy in comparison.
In a nutshell best phone I've ever owned, and I've owned some of the best!
Thanks for your replies. Could you address the questions I left at the end and then maybe if you have time comment on how significant each of the features I listed are.

Both are great phones. You really have hold them both at store to get your own preferences. The real difference is the storage space. 920 comes with 32 GB Iirc while HTC comes with only 8GB for the same price. You have pay way more on HTC for additional storage.
On the software side, Nokia owns its own mapping company. So you get free Navigation software called Nokia Drive. On HTC, it probably will bundle its licensed navigation software that you get to use for free for 30 days then you have to pay like its WP7 phones.

I also like the weight of the phone. Might be cognitive dissonance, but it feels a lot better to have a slightly more weight in the hand when using a slightly bigger phone. The device is resting in the hand, more than for example a Galaxy SIII.
Agree completely. I can see how the weight will bother some people but I like it. Feels solid and sturdy.

Just got an 8X free on top of my Lumia 920 and quite frankly, it's a pretty epic paperweight. I'm exaggerating, it's awesome for an HTC device but it's just not as good. The screen is completely overshadowed by the Lumia's CBD, the Lumia is much louder on the external speakers and via headphones the 8X has a bit of an echo... On Sennheiser headphones that simply shouldn't happen but I guess it's intended for low quality garbage like Beats. The 8X also feels pretty thin and flimsy and if you press hard on the back of the phone you can actually use the touch screen... It's concerning. Overall, my only complaint with the Lumia is the tinny rattle of the vibration motor.
Nokia let other manufacturers use their software like maps so that's on the 8x too.

Maps, true. I think MS licensed the maps from Nokia.
But what about turn by turn navigation? Some thing similar to Google Nav.
Yep Nokia is making an app for all partners including HTC so that will be out soon I imagine.

Read the reviews and make the dicisions yourself. What you listed mostly are marketing bluffs. Nothing important.
Many are of minimal importance, but I would disagree that their aren't some important differences. That is the whole reason I left the store with the 920 after trying them out for a bit.
Primarily with the Nokia you get 32gb for $99, The screen is distinctly better (my opinion, 5-8x better in sun), and I personally think the Nokia felt like a much more quality and well made phone.
Rogers is offering a 8GB version of the 8X for $50 less. I might go for that since I don't really use the space on phones and stuff anyway and the Nokia apps don't seem very useful. I'll go into a store and see though if the audio on the 8X is much better, and if the 920 is as heavy as people say, etc.

So you'd take a 4x hit on memory for $50? I wouldn't especially since, like you listed in your original post:
- Better screen technology (after 320 or so PPI, you really can't make out much of a difference - 342 is negligible difference)
- Better build quality
- SIGNIFICANTLY better rear facing camera + technology (surprised no one really emphasized that yet in this thread).
But I guess it's up to you...

Good review between them.
Lumia 920 sound quality through headphones is very good. There is no background noise like on my Cowson J3. I noticed plenty of noise on the older Lumia 900. It's excellent when you output it through an AUX cable.
I read a lot of reviews and opinions here about the Z5C that are from people that were or still are using a Sony device. The Z5C is usually compared in terms of the Z3C or even the Z1C. Those comparisons are good if you own those devices, but I have no prior contact with Sony. My current device is a Moto G (1st Gen).
So I'd like to know what people who had no prior contact, or at least not in the past years, with Sony say about the phone. How does it feel and how much "crap" is on a Sony phone compared to a Nexus or Motorola phone? How good/bad are the Sony-Apps ? What "oddities" do Sony phones have?
Thanks for your opinions.
I came from a Moto G (2nd Gen) to the Z5C which is my first Sony phone. So a similar path to what you are considering. It comes with way more "crap" on in than the Motorola did. Where my Moto G (2nd Gen) might have had 5 Motorola utilities, the Z5C has maybe 30. Many of them are app/tools that seemingly connect you into the Sony Sphere. PlayStation stuff, Dinosaur images pop up in the camera you can stamp on your photos and super cheesy Japanese schoolgirl emoticons for your text input.
If you like the clean native Google apps such as Gmail, Calendar, Photos messaging and so on you will find yourself having to disable the Sony versions.
One oddity my Z3C has is that is is fussy about which micro USB cable will charge it. So if like me you have a collection of micro USB cables and chargers from previous phone they may not all work. I guess this may be due to tighter tolerances required water proofing the charge port. Not a biggy but worth knowing.
I find the Xperia Keyboard gesture input (aka Swype input) to be a PITA. Miss rate is too high and deleting errors is tedious. Shame becuase it works very well on other phones.
Small size is great. Can easily slip it in a front trouser pocket.
BUT I have yet to feel "vibrate on for calls" when it is my pocket. When someone does call when Z5C in pocket when I am doing somehting noisey like mowing a lawn, I dont feel the vinration alert, it seemingly wakes the phone and thereafter movement leads to random screen presses. So when I eventually retrieve it form my pocket an hour later the screen is still on and it is in some weird screen such as the camera or emerg dialer. Perhpas I am missing something here though. Oh and definitely don't buy it for the camera if you are expecting a point and shoot with a high % of great shots.
That's my thoughts.
Coming from a nexus 5, I love this phone! Never charge it from the mains only from my car every day(1 hour commute each way) and it keeps going strong! Pretty quick and feels good.

This Z5 is very bad...unstable sw, no optimization, really slow...bleah! I think i will never buy again a sony device. Oh...customer care is bad too.
Camera is slow and poor quality, GPS is very inaccurate, BT disconnet and reconnect every 15 secs (i think the problem is trhow but i can't disable it...)
So...i'm not a satisfied user..

I actually never use the original cables since I have set up a "charging station". Which cables does the Z5C not accept? Is there a pattern?
And I'm not buying this for the camera, I have a DSLR for that

Yes, last fw: 32.0.A.6.152
Customer care have reset the phone 4 times. Each trial did not resolve the problem. In the end they told me to bring it to service but they had no idea of the repair time and they not given me any temporary phone.
My phone has only one month and i need it for work...i can't stay weeks without it. For a 600$ phone i think this is unacceptable.
At this time i have the same initial problems...
I hope in Marshmallow ...
Coming from Moto G first Gen (falcon)
Coming from Moto G 1st Gen. This is my first Sony Phone.
I am loving the Z5C.
Few things to note that that will give you an idea between the two phones
1. The flash on the moto g is noticeably brighter and warmer. Idc about cameras, but I find I use the flashlight a lot
2. The chip on the Z5C does feel much faster. Not sure how to describe it other than the UI on the Z5C being more "fluid"
3. The chip on the Z5C does get noticeably warm (but not hot) on the back under certain loads. E.g. running long sessions of RDP or installing lots of apps in quick succession or recording 4K video. Under normal use like browsing the web or watching youtube it does not get warm.
4. The camera is way better than the Moto G
5. The hardware feels really solid. It feels dense. I like it
6. The battery life is significantly better. At my usage, the Moto G will die at about 8pm or 9pm (taking off the charge at 7am). I have yet to kill the Z5C in a single day in my normal use
(my normal use usually has a few hours of music, and at least 4 hours of screen time)
7. The stereo speakers are much nicer, but the stereo effect is small, and they aren't not as loud as the moto g's single speaker
8. The max brightness of the Z5C's screen is about the same as the one on the Moto G. The min brightness is on the Z5C is lower though.
9 The physical dimensions of the Z5C is smaller in width and height. The Z5C does feel thicker because of its more boxy shape though
In terms of bloatware, there is quite a bit. I have a lot of apps disabled from settings or hidden (I use Apex)
There are some features that sony added that are nice though.
1. Built in screen recording
2. "Small Apps" - a bit like floating widgets
3. Nice audio optimizations that make my music experience nicer
4. Being able to customize the quick settings in the notification center
5. Battery percentage in the status bar (this is important to me )
6. The screen colours can be calibrated to your liking
Other things to consider
- The fingerprint sensor is pretty bad, but that could be just my fingers.
- The phone is really slippery compared to the Moto G. A case is highly recommended.
- Stamina mode - I havent tested if this has a positive effect on battery life, but i'm letting the placebo effect take place
- The microsd slot is nice for future proofing, although given that I had a 8GB moto g, and the Z5C comes with 32GB, Im not going to need a microsd in the near future.
- Water proofing
- Of the 32GB, about 10GB is taken up by the android system, and thus we cannot use for our own stuff
- I found the volume button placement on the Z5C wierd until I got used to it in less than a week. Unless you actively need access to it all the time, its not annoying
- I find that everything on screen is too large for my liking, so I have my DPI set to 280, the same as what I had on my Moto G
In response to some of the things said above:
- Bluetooth works fine for me. It has never lost connection to my Microsoft Band when I needed them to be connected
- I've used my Z5C with 3 different usb cables, none of them have a problem.
- Camera does launch slow if Photo Analyser Service is not disabled. The camera launches quite fast now (but admittedly not as fast as say an iPhone 6s)
- The GPS locks quicker than the Moto G, and has yet to be inaccurate for me.
I am really looking forward to Marshmallow
I hope that answers your questions. Sorry for long response lol
I have both nexus 6p and z5 compact. Previously had nexus 6.
I went for the z5c as it had wifi calling, and is a pretty small but powerful phone.
Notables, z5c is under-clocked, could be because heat dissipation on small device yielded unsatisfactory result, could be another one of those battery optimisation things.
It also seems to be on a conservative or power save profile, making it slow to start, but if you launch a game it gets into gear.
It was stuttering even with the OTAs of which i had received two, just a few days ago, even with factory resets it did not go away.
I used the sony PC companion to do a full firmware flash, not an incremental OTA and it became pretty smooth and slick to use again with all 0.5 speed animations and about 20 apps installed. I also disabled all of the original media apps and extra Sony stuff and use my own, poweramp and mxplayer is all i really need.
Pretty good experience to use now. Too bad about it using some sort of powersave profile even with stamina disabled. Good thing i have an nexus 6p to play with too.

Coming from the N5:
Disadvantages:
- Much less free RAM (N5X also has this issue, I think it's related to Android 64 bits).
- Much lower photo quality
Advantages:
- 200% or much more battery life.
- overall quality
- vídeo quality

I am coming from the HTC One M7 which can be considered an old phone now I guess.
Good:
-Battery life finally gets me over the day and sometimes into the second.
-Better camera, but by far not great.
-Better display brightness
Bad:
-Sonys Android design looks like a toy. It lacks the beautiful HTC Sense look and features.
-Even with the latest firmware and fresh format its doesnt feel any fast than the old HTC One. Sense had a nicer flow overall.
-In general, switching between apps is not faster, once in the app, the processor surely shows its power. Antutu gave me 31k on HTC One and 62k on Z5C, so technically twice as fast.
-Having the phone in the front pockets of your jeans just looks stupid with the hard edges. The HTC one with its beautiful round design was basically invisible in your pocket.
The HTC One was far from perfect and had its issues, but my heart is still with that phone and I dont beleive I am gonna buy another Sony phone. I wanted a small powerful phone, but its not easy to like this phone I am afraid.

I'm also coming from a HTC ONE M7 and I'm feeling exactly as you. I have had the phone for 5 days now and I'm seriously considering to sell it and keep using my M7 since I'm seeing the same things than you see.
I have great expectations for this phone but now that I have it, I'm a little bit disappointed...I don't know if it's cause I'm so use to my old phone or cause my old phone is sooo good that I don't see anything new or improved on the z5c...maybe expect for the waterproofing things.
I'll give it another week to see If I can fall in love with it...maybe when the custom roms start showing up I'll start to see the advantages of changing.
I've been used some HTC and got a Z1c and S6. Guys plz give sometime to this phone, my S6 also took a couple of months to improve before got satisfy result. I believe Android 6.0 will give a new life to this phone.
I've only experienced Apple's devices so I came over from an iPhone 3G, iPhone 4S and then an iPhone 6S. I absolutely LOVE this sucker. And I must have gotten very lucky because I haven't seen any of the issues that others have.
Pros:
1. Fascinated by the Android OS. There's just so much you can do with it! So much more freeing than Apple's IOS. They both have a few positive and negative quirks, but I'm not really missing IOS that much. I did miss the Safari left/right swipe browser initially, but found out about the Rbrowser app with built in ad-block and the swipe feature, and couldn't be happier.
2. The device is quick. Compared to my iPhone devices haven't experienced nearly as much lag even under load.
3. I love the camera and video. Takes far better pictures and video than any camera I've ever used before, and with the latest update, the menu selection is so easy to use. I think the side button to open the camera app is a genius. I also never experienced the blur issue that a lot of others complained about.
4. The size and look of the device totally compliments me. I find modern phones like the Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6S way too big and clunky. This device is exactly the right size. Slightly larger than my old 4S, but still comfortable to hold, and type one handed with. I also absolutely love the sharp right angles on the phone. I dig the thickness of the Compact, and I love the bright punky yellow of the case color I selected.
5. The fingerprint scanner is so fun to use. I had one on the 6S that worked maybe slightly better, but that's only because there was more surface area to press, but still having a fingerprint reader makes me feel like a spy a bit.
6. I haven't had any issues with the heat of the phone. It gets warm, but after a month of use, I've never experienced it getting warmer than the 4S or the 6S even while playing graphic intensive games, using the GPS, or recording video. It never gets warm while browsing websites, or doing day to day smartphone things.
7. The device did have a little bit of bloatware, but then, so did Apple's devices. Removing/disabling the bloat was easy to do.
8. So far no unexpected surprises. The alarm works. the phone rings and vibrates as it ought. The apps all open fine. I get all my expected alerts and then some. Messaging works fine. The screen is bright and easy to read and watch. I love the little FM radio app (though I don't use it too much). Haven't had any issues with the GPS. Everything does what it's supposed to do.
Negatives:
1. Coming from devices with only one bottom speaker, I thought that having two front facing stereo speakers would make this device monster loud....it isn't. In fact, it's slightly quieter than the 6S (though louder than the 4S). That said, I do love the stereo effect, and I think having so many audio controls is awesome. I just wish the device was a bit louder. Hopefully when the device becomes rootable I can find a fix for that.
2. The boot up time on this device is pretty slow. From powered off, the 6S starts up in a matter of a couple seconds. It takes like half a minute or longer for the Z5 to start up. Course, this isn't much of an issue most of the time since the device doesn't usually need to be powered off or restarted.
3. The iPhone 6S 3D touch is pretty amazing, and I can see them doing some cool things with it over time. There was nothing about it that was super amazing while I had it. No apps to really take too much of an advantage of it yet, but I can see that it'll be awesome to have some time down the road.
4. The voicemail was a bit odd to set up. I'm used to Apple's easy voicemail integration that just works out of the box. For this device I had to download and setup a "visual voicemail" system that I'm not used to, and that I found a bit annoying.
My first Android phone was a Sony xperia mini. Was worse than Motorola Milestone (gsm droid) that replaced it. I since moved onto Samsung original Galaxy S and then Galaxy Nexus. Then the original Moto X dev edition which is the same size as this Z5C. I love the form factor. Ever since the Nexus 6 which I have one of those, Moto is obsessed with phone size. The Nexus 6 was named Shamu for a reason. I am hoping the just under 5" phones are not s dying breed because this device is the perfect size for me. I also like the subtle tweaks Sony does with their ROM compared to vanilla stock. Its also a fast device and I like the build quality compared to the Samsung devices I have owned. Those are my thoughts anyway.
Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Realme X2 Pro, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Realme X2 Pro is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Wasted opportunity
I have a bug. I put animations to 0 but after a while they come back to 10.. It is so annoying
Another bug, the dark mode deactivate itself and no disturbing mode doesn't work for some reason, I still receive audio notifications. Tha animation speed is not always the same, that means we have a beta software?
All good, worth buying phone.
Fantastic phone 12 gb 256 rom.The best value for money deal.
Hardware is good, but bad software and open source support.
No open source support means this phone will not have roms.
Now the BL still cause the fingerprint broken, that is bad.
I'm pee going from Galaxy note 8 to realme X2 pro second, you make better photos or at least like 8 notes
Require a lot of software work, realme has a very good camera but to make the same software like Samsung or apple... It is milion miles away..
I simply love this phone. I never though that it's that awesome!
I love this phone, i have 8/128 blu eu (paid 369 eur), no problem, very simple to change font (i am mad about Google Sans), good camera, very smooth, charge is simply unbelivable. So, for its price is super.

In stock on ebay Realme Store, i combined Realme coupon with ebay one
Experiences with Realme X2 Pro
I’ve used the X2 Pro now for 1 1/2 weeks (but only parallel to my old Moto G4 Plus, yet) and this are my experiences:
First Impression:
This is a heavy phone! (Not compared to other current similar phones but compared to earlier phones.) I thought 30g or 40g won’t make a difference but indeed they do. I prefer the lighter Moto G4 Plus, especially if I have to hold it for some longer times.
Software appears a bit chaotic/overwhelming. Even if there actually aren’t so many Realme apps, I felt like “So many apps and functions.” “Why does this system setting requires permissions to open it. I want to open settings (especially settings I don’t know about) without granting any permissions. … Oh OK, it’s not a normal setting but an additional app.” “This menu looks a bit clunky, I don’t know why.” But it's not as bad as some people tell.
I don’t like these shiny backside design so much but it looks better than expected.
The charging is really fast (but no surprise as I’ve seen and read many tests and it was one of the main reasons to buy these).
It works like expected. Apparently the development and innovations have slowed down. But the new features (fast charge, multi cam) are nice.
I like:
SuperVOOC fast charging. It’s really useful and stunning.
Internet Connection Control: It’s possible to decline network access (wifi and mobile separate) for apps. So no need for a separate firewall app anymore.
Personal Information Protection: I like to prohibit access to contacts for WhatsApp and other prying apps. It’s useful to comply with GDPR and other data privacy laws.
No thermal throttling experienced. (I only tested it really superficially.)
GPS seems to work really fast and accurate.
I don’t like:
I still don’t like glass backsides.
They are heavy, they are way too fragile. I don’t get why every YouTuber/Tester a few years ago asked for more “high-grade” materials like glass. In the end everyone has to further bulk up these big phones with protective cases/bumpers and don’t even feel the original materials.
Sound quality of the speakers is worse than the sound quality of the much cheaper and older Moto G4 Plus. It’s equally loud but the lower frequencies / bass tones are missing a bit and it sounds a bit “thin”. Really stupid to be stingy on such cheap parts.
Sound quality of microphone sounds a bit tinny and misses bass tones. In video recordings the sound tend’s to be a bit quiet. Even though it was quite loud when tested with a voice recording app.
SIP telephony (Session Initiation Protocol) missing in dialer/caller app & system settings:
It would be nice if SIP telephony would be integrated in the system so that we don't need any separate app. I already found hidden SIP account settings in the system settings. And after I enter my account data and SIP server data, the phone even registers/connects to the server. But unfortunately incoming calls aren't displayed/signaled at all and outgoing calls aren't possible with the stock caller app.
Timer in the Clock App:
Not possible to set more than 2 timers at once.
The timer alarm stops too early. I'd prefer if the timer rings for about 5 minutes or so.
I really don't like the timer sound. And I haven't found any setting to change it, yet.
I really would want to see running timers (at least the one which is going off next) on the lock screen and in the notification center.
Camera produces oversaturated videos and photos. I would prefer a slightly more neutral image.
I had temporal problems with Bluetooth:
I wanted to connect my Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones but it wasn’t possible. I just could not see the headset in the Bluetooth device list. I tried it several times. I even found Bluetooth protocol settings in the developer system settings and tried to change them a bit, but it didn’t help and so I changed it back to default. On the next day without doing anything special I finally saw the HD 4.40BT in the list and was able to connect to them. With my Moto G4+ it was just: turning headphones on, enabling BT on G4+, finding them, connect, done – within seconds. I don’t know what’s the problem here with the X2 Pro, especially since it works now.
Another strange thing I experienced while trying to find my Bluetooth headphones in the list: Almost every Bluetooth device is only displayed with its Bluetooth MAC address instead of its name. I mean, I don’t know all these other devices (I was on the go when I tried it first and it probably were headphones, smartphones, etc. from other people). So maybe a few of these unknown devices just didn’t had any name; But I assume at least a few of them had names. But at the other hand the X2 Pro finds more BT devices than the Moto G4+ so who knows.
Additional whishes:
Internet Connection Control option for each app should be included in App Info (next to permission). Maybe also Personal Information Protection, Game Space Settings and so on could be integrated in App Info.
I’d like to have a wider (higher) on screen navigation button bar. (I prefer buttons over the gestures, but with this large display even the bottom border is a bit uncomfortable to reach.)
Easy & discreet locking (e.g. double tap, long pressed back button,...):
It's a feature I only miss because I had a smartphone with physical fingerprint sensor on the front before, which could also be used to lock the phone (like pressing the power button). It was convenient to lock the phone when it lays on the table with just one slight one finger press, without grabbing the phone, without using gestures, no matter which app or whatever is open. It would be great if Realme could include any solution on system level. The app (icon) to fast lock the phone was a nice little idea but maybe there could be an even better option to achieve this.
Neutral things (decent, but could be better):
Battery capacity is OK:
I easily get through the whole day and night. But in my experience smartphone batteries lose significant capacity over 1 or 2 years and it would be nice to have still enough capacity after 2-3 years.
Display performance in general OK:
Minimum brightness is good. Maximum brightness seems to be good, too. Color accuracy seem to be average.
Display has a greenish tint (easily visible with low brightness, harder to see but still there with high brightness; DC dimming and warm/cold color temperature setting doesn’t make a difference here).
90 Hz actually looks a bit more smooth than 60 Hz and it looks more smooth than Moto 4G+ (60 Hz). But Realme X2 Pro on 60 Hz feels more choppy/laggy/unsmooth than Moto G4+ with its 60 Hz. I just use 90 Hz.
Under consistent heavy load (long time benchmarking) the phone gets really hot. But I haven’t experienced any hot parts during casual gaming or during normal usage.
The caller/dialer app has a blacklist but blocked calls are redirected to the mailbox. I would prefer them to be declined or ignored.
In general the camera is decent.
The app UI is quite self-explanatory.
It's even possible to zoom kind of smoothly in videos if you press and hold the 1x / zoom button. It would be useful if it (only really mild/gentle) snaps to 1x/2x position, because otherwise it's hard to set exactly 1x/2x (native/optical) zoom while zooming smooth.
Picture quality is decent. It’s better than my older & cheaper Moto G4 Plus (less noise, better in dark conditions) so you see the development but it’s not top notch compared to current competitors.
Few tiny translation issues:
Some literal translations; blocked call notification states “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf€ gesperrt” instead of “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf gesperrt” or “Neu gesperrt 2 Anrufe gesperrt”;…. But I think most of the translations are really good.
Double Tap to Wake works decent but not perfect. Sometimes I have to double tap 2 or 3 times before the screen wakes up.
I don’t like the dimensions.
I already mentioned the weight in the first impression. But I would prefer a slightly smaller phone with a more traditional aspect ratio. Unfortunately there are no interesting offers on the market. But with big hands it’s still possible (not comfortable) to use this phone mostly one handed.
All in all I'm undecided how much I like the Realme X2 Pro. On the on hand 429 EUR is a lot money for such few improvements over an cheaper and 3-4 years old smartphone I previously used. On the other hand the price-performance ratio is probably the best on the western market compared to all the other products. I think the X2 Pro is a valuable, good product for most people that search an up-to-date phone.
Let's just hope that Realme delivers frequent and good quality software updates.
i have it only a few hours.
My SIM is still on the old phone. Blazingly fast. But I cannot find full disk encryption anywhere. If it's not supported, it will be sold in the following days.
Only big issue with this phone is the thickness. After mounts I still don't like it... With the case, because a brick. But all the rest is ok. Some bugs here and there... Normal
So far, so good.
Just one piece of information I've been looking for within the specifications of other phones but nobody details: Realme X2 Pro supports LDAC Bluetooth Codec. Maybe this is obvious for other people reading A2DP or LE, but not for me. Having a pair of Sony WH-H910N headphones is good to know I can have the best quality for them.
