I've been on the Gingerbread Alien Rom for a while now and i want to get something new. A Rom close to what ICS would be like.
So Any Suggestions on which Rom i should get?
So far this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382934 is the only Rom that I think seems to have what I want.
Oh and is there anyway to install such a Rom without deleting all the information from my phone?

first nope you have to delete everything. you can back up all your apps with titanium backup your contacts are in your google account so no biggie.to finish yeah that rom or miui theme black ice is supposedly the closest but with those tools go to town try them all i did and i think most people have.

What if I just install a theme over my current theme without changing my Rom, like putting the Darkside theme over my current Alien Rom? Is it even possible, and in this case would I still have to wipe all my data even though i could use Titanium backup to backup everything?

No, replacing theme should be ok without wiping data.... I would still suggest you install the ROM with the theme you want though. Probably need to make sure your using a updated CWM Recovery too, since the last ROM you flashed was Alien.

Ok...so ill just review the steps that i think i need to take in order to do this
1. Backup everything with titanium backup
2. Update to CM7
3. Install new ROM and theme
4. Restore from backup with titanium backup
Am i missing anything?

what do i need to do to best try other roms, or just update to v30?
how do i flash ? - and how do i know when to do a full wipe? - and what does that entail(should i do a backup , and does the back up need to be on my computer,not my phone?)
could flashing other roms make my current one unstable?
and lastly .....will i lose all my apps and contacts and stuff with each flash or full wipe?
any clarification on these matters would be awesome.

This would be better placed in Q&A, but I will be happy to help you. All you need to do to flash another rom is what you did for the first one. To move up from one version of a rom to another, you don't need to wipe unless the instructions specify you to do so. But when in doubt, wipe. That is if you dont mind losing all of your saved data. But when going to a new rom, then wiping is a must. Yes, you will lose all apps and contacts for each wipe. No, your phone will not be unstable because of the flash, though if the rom has bugs then it could be. Hope this helps
I suggest installing titanium backup from the market. It allows you to save your current apps and data to be reinstalled on your new rom.
Before flashing a new rom, create a nandroid of your current rom by holding vol up + power. Scroll to backup/restore and create the nand. If for any reason you dont like the new rom, you can wipe data, dalvik, and ext (if your sd card is partitioned) and restore the nand. Your phone will be exactly like before.
To flash a new rom, save the file to the root of your sd card (not in any folder), do a wipe if your going to a new rom or if you have problems updating the old one, and flash the file you downloaded. If your updating the same rom the developer will tell you if you need to wipe or not.
FYI- Nands are saved on your sd card in the nandroid folder. You dont need to mess with them. When you restore, amon ra will look in that folder for you. Don't rename your recoveries like I did and render them useless.

And your contacts should be resynced when you flash a new rom as long as you're using Gmail and allowing it to backup.

I just had a couple of questions about the whole ROMS and how to install them. I have my Vibrant rooted but I'm still not 100% sure how to root. What I looked up online is the following:
1-Use ROM manager to download recover image.
2-Download ROM and save it on the SD.
3-Boot into recovery (1st question can I boot into recovery through ROM manager or do I have to do it the manual way?)
4-Select option reinstall packages which take you to the ClockWork Recovery
5-Wipe date from phone (2nd question I've heard about NANDROID back ups but what exactly are they and what do they do? If i make a nandroid back up then wipe will I still be able to restore my phone to its previous condition through this back up?
6-install .zip from SD and Voila you have ROM.
So aside from the two obvious questions I just want to know if I have the correct steps?

1) Yes Rom Manager will let you boot directly into clockwork recovery.
2) Yes Nandroid will make a complete backup of your phone software and apps installed, so when you restore a backup it will be the same as when you backed it up.
3) Make your nandroid before wiping anything! Other wise your steps are ok.
Awesome!! And I can make the nandroid back up from clock work right? Also can I move the back up to like a usb or do I have to keep it on the phone?

Yes, you use clockwork to make the nandroid bakup. And if you like you can store the backup on your USB drive. Just copy the folder over and you will be all good. You only have to have the backup on the phone if you intend to restore a backup.
Whats great about Clockwork and Nandroid which works well with Clockwork is I have my stock rom all the way to my current. I just keep making backups and I restore if I want to compare. I have the following on my phone.
Stock
Vibrant4
Vibrant5
Vibrant6
Vibrant7
When I get a Rom just the way I like it I make a backup of it so if/when I have to leave it and possibly come back to it I just flash it. Also I would recommend Titanium Backup so you can backup your apps and reload them even if you go back on a rom. Makes reloading settings easier in your apps too.
Ok, so I just made a back up using rom mangers back up rom feature, am I supposed to specifically look for something that says "nandroid"?

You will only see "nandroid" if you boot your phone into clockwork recovery.
And, no, you don't specifically need to look for it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't you want to keep your backup somewhere NOT on the phone? Because if you brick your phone, or corrupt it or something, wouldn't you have a tough time restoring with your backup file? I don't really get it.
Well I've done it I tried out Eugenes Vibrant Hybrid ROM and it was nice but I'll just wait for something else later on. my only question is once you install a ROM i would have had to DL all my apps again which is gay...
anyway i used Rom manager to create my back up of my stock build after playing with Eugene's ROM for a bit I restored my back up like a G.

Yeah, I loaded Eugene's ROM and played around with out a bit, then I downloaded rom manager from the market and restored the back up I saved on my sd. It was quick and painless.

2. Copy the entire backup directory to your PC for "just in case" scenarios.
3. Make a backup of your user installed apps using Titanium backup, and copy it over to your PC.
4. Download the ROM (i.e. Eugene's Vibrant9.zip) to your internal SD card.
5. Boot into clockworkrecovery (I use ROM Manager for that)
6. Install ROM.zip from SD card
7. Reboot into normal boot.
8. Verify the basic functionality of the phone, and make sure your satisfaction level goes a notch up.
9. Download Titanium backup from the market and install it.
10. Restore Titanium backup.
11. Crack a beer, enjoy your accomplishments, and DO NOT ask when CM6 comes rolling around

In regards to titanium backup... do you need the DONATE version to restore the apps properly. OR will they restore with all our data, but just not link the market? Thanks in advance!
Any way to get into clockwork recovery without rom manager or if the phone isn't booting up at all? I guess I could always leave an update.zip of clockwork mod on the phone. Is that what everyone else does?

I have a paid version, I don't think you would need the full version to properly restore the backup. I used it once to flash a different ROM, and I didn't have to re-purchase Titanium Backup again, I don't believe so.
Well every one tells me that the paid version of titanium is better because it updates your apps straight from the market or something like that. I just downloaded the paid version so I'll let you know how that works out.

You can also pack the backed up user apps into update.zip and re-install the packages from the recovery, so no need to re-download the Titanium Backup, it should be there once you re-install packages from the recovery after booting into your new ROM.
I'm currently using xtrSense and I've had it on my phone for a long time now. I love it and it's been such an improvement over stock. But I'm interested in switching things up and trying something new just for a change. I'm liking the looks of the new ADW EX so I think I might try a froyo ROM and give the new launcher a shot.
1. Which froyo ROM should I use? Looking for speed and stability
2. I want to be able to completely backup my current ROM, apps and all, so that I can make a full transition back if needed. I understand I need to make a nandroid backup and backup my SD Card. But how do I backup my apps and settings and everything? I suppose I need Titanium Backup. Do I need Pro?
Am I missing anything?

when your in recovery mode theres an option for backup/restore, you want to click on it and choose nand backup, let it perform its task...once done you wipe data and dalvik cache... your now safe to flash your new rom, and if you realize you dont like it and wanna go back to your old setup, you just wipe data and dalvik cache then choose nand restore this will revert what you backed up previously...hope that helps...

I use TB free and can backup and restore apps data and settings, but when you restore, to get it to really stick you may need to run the batch a second time choosing data only. Each Froyo ROM has its own pros, I prefer Froyolicious overall, cleanest fastest most stable in my opinion, but after a few days I miss my camera. As far as the Cyanogen set, I think CELB is the cleanest. I recommend just flashing the **** out of your phone, you'll be more comfortable and confident with the process, and you can choose your daily for yourself.

seems to be a sense thing ive neveer had that on a cm rom....
I'd like to add that you can use WidgetLocker on the market (one of the few apps I've bought) and configure your lock screen exactly the way you like. You may need to use third-party apps to add text message previews to WidgetLocker, but I know they're out there. I also configure the unlock slider to have three options: unlock, camera, and video camera, so I have quick access to my camera app, but it takes up less room than the stock Sense unlock slider.
Hey guys. Recently rooted my DX2 that was on the latest 2.3.5 update and flashed Eclipse. I love it and its amazing but I want to try other ROMs that have much more custom options, etc. However, I was wondering what the best way to go about this is. I know how to make nandroid backups and have one with eclipse as well as one from right after i rooted.
what's the best way to switch between these without losing data etc?
Ok well the nandroid is good but all the other ROMs for the X2 are based on 2.3.4. You will need to sbf down and unfortunately there is no way around this. If you ever wanna come back to eclipse though just take the 2.3.5 ota, root and restore your backup. The same process can be done for the ROM's on 2.3.4. Install one, make a backup so if you ever want to come back to it you can just restore the nandroid. Use Titanium Backup to backup apps so you can just restore them on the other ROMs. Don't back up system data though because it will screw up other ROMs.
if i have a backup of stock rooted i can just boot into recovery and restore using the backup? also, is there an up to date guide on how to rename them.
as for the 2.3.4 ROM backups, i'd have to be on 2.3.4 in order to restore them?
Yea you can restore the stock rooted if you want. To rename them just use a file explorer or something similar and rename to whatever you want. Don't add spaces though or it will screw it up.
And yea you don't wan't to restore a backup of a different version of android. I don't know definitively that it will not work, but it's just a bad idea in general.
What gets erased when I apply an update? My backups are on my external sd card so they'll overwrite the internal correct?
Ive had my internal reserved for mostly just mp3s (and recently photography books and vids), and it still hasnt been erased through months of data wipes and sbfs.. App data can be backed up with titanium backup pro and batch restored. Google backs up contacts, wifi settings, wallpaper sometimes. If using a non stock launcher, your home screen setup and setting can be transfered btw roms. Its just system data and customizations that you need to do for the new rom and thats the fun part. I skipped some details of course but Android is a really efficient system.

thanks for the reply. it looks like the /system and /data folder are the ones that get overwritten so everything else stays untouched from what i can tell.
i tried restoring an old backup i made and got stuck at checkin_mot.db file.. pulled the battery, factory reset, restored latest eclipse backup. not sure what went wrong or if i just wasn't patient enough lol.
I had trouble with a cm7 backup freezing at the same spot..had to delete it. The cm9 backup i tried afterwards restored fine and pretty fast.

The biggest issue when coming from Eclipse, is the kernel. You cannot use a nandroid backup to switch between a 2.3.4 and a 2.3.5 rom. The nandroid cannot backup the kernel due to our ****ty locked bootloader.
So the only way you can go to another rom is to SBF back to 2.3.4 then root, and flash a new one. And even then a nandroid of Eclipse is worthless without it's kernel.
So no, there is no easier way. Other than to avoid eclipse like the plague, and stick with 2.3.4 roms.
Please let me know if I'm a complete retard here, but this has been my experience for the last year and a half.
Well before JB CM10 came out I'd say Eclipse was the most stable and best DD... Lol "avoiding it like the plague" is a bit overboard. But otherwise you are correct. To go to any other ROM it's time to SBF.
I definitely love the skin and feel of eclipse but I would like some more flexibility in terms of options, without overloading the overall device and making it sluggish again like stock.
Are any of the CM versions entirely stable and does everything work? Or they all have force close/non working parts?
Cm7 is pretty stable. The ones with the most bugs would be the CM9 based roms. CM10 JB is incredibly stable for the most part. You would never know it is an alpha. It runs very smoothly. There are problems installing some apps from gplay until alpha 2 is released but if you have titanium backups of your apps you can restore most if not all of them. It's only a work around but its good for now. I'm using CM10 as my daily driver (came from Eclipse.)

that sounds promising. is it specific to the x2 in regards to the soft buttons? (as we already have hard buttons and the baked in ones dont really make sense)
Hey guys, I am brand new to Android and I am trying to flash CleanROM 1.3, but I suppose this question applies towards any ROM.
If I make a complete backup on Titanium, Will this put my original settings and apps and their data back on the new ROM?
Also, to go a step further, will this put back on any bloat that was removed from these ROMS?
Is there a better way to go about this or is it pretty much when I flash a new ROM for this first time, I should just re-setup everything?

Just backup your app data on apps you need. Everything else just redownload. That's what I do.
