Hello! I'm new to the rooting thing and finally rooted my Vibrant last night. I'm really eager to get a new rom running and wanted to know what the best one out there is? I'm so over Eclair.
this is gonna be funnnnn
me smell troll?
Huh? I'm not a troll.
"best" is all in the eye of the beholder, i myself am not a big fan of TW roms, while others will swear by them 24/7
so as a first time flasher, go with something easy try out a 2.2.1 rom, Bionix or Trigger. once you get more comfortable try something a little more complicated MIUI/CM7 (personally i'll swear by Miui any day of the week, best rom in all categories in my opinion)
if you wanna jump on the 4.0 band wagon grab Neo's ICS 4.0 passion. very clean stable and shiny. only downside atm is no video recording.
just make sure you read all the OP's and flash accordingly bricking your phone is near impossible but it's always a hassle to have to odin back to jfd and start over.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
For a 2.2.1 rom I would do Bi-Winning over Bionix Frost. But for 2.2 I would definitely start with Bionix 1.3.1 or Nextgen.
Miui only lasted a week on my phone before Google framework started its Marathon of FC's. It is pretty, but I like a app drawer more.

You definitely want a Toxic ROM. Nothing comes close to the batterylife. Try Toxics D9, there is a RC3 version out right now, you wont regret it, its easy to flash and ridiculously stable.

I am still running Toxic 8 (waiting for d9 final) and it hasn't let me down. Though D9 is pretty much flash worthy. Easy flash, stupendous battery life, and awesome dev. If you want to check out Toxic 8 click on my sig. You can check out D9 here

I like ICS Passion, but since it's still in beta I would not recomment this rom for a first timer. (That's the reason why I don't currently use it).
I like MIUI, because it's really easy to change the theme of the rom.
Be warned that you won't get the battery life you are used to. With that said you can flash a 2.2 rom (bionix, bi winning, etc) and pretty much get a batterylife that will last you the whole day, untill you go to sleep. Hope that helped

My 2 cents... I've tried a bunch of ROMs and by far the most stable, easiest to update, most customizable, most fun to tinker with has got to be MIUI. It honestly wins on all counts for me. Their launcher gives you the ability to customize all parts of the UI. you will have a ton of fun!

I'd say Bionix 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 http://sourceforge.net/projects/bionix-v/files/,
Zendroid 2.1.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079517
or Team Toxic D9rc3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360502,all of which are 2.2 Froyo roms and very solid.
That isn't to dismiss any of the many roms available, but just my picks for starters.
We Vibrant owners are very lucky to have the tremendous community of developers, that gives us the opportunity to mod and customize are phones and I'm really grateful to all.

I dont know why it always happened. I would format system, data, datadata, cache, dalvik, factory reset and then flash. I would restore my apps via MIUI Backup, it would last 5 days about and then force close constantly. I have no clue why it always happened.
I'm about done with Gingerbread anyway, these ICS roms are looking better and better by the day. Too bad CM quit Vibrant, 911 works on ICS. Wish they'd give it a second chance.
About time you rooted. I always liked the bionix stuff from team whiskey. CM never really agreed with my vibrant as well as my older phones. But these posters are right, start with some of the easier stuff and get familiar with Odin. ICS passion is very nice IMO. Enjoy as your old phone is going to become brand new for you.

I've tried lots of different ROMS and bounced between them. I would have to agree with others that MIUI is the most customizable and in my opinion is very sleek. Cyanogen is always solid. Right now I'm running ICS Passion v8 and have been hooked since v4 due to the fun ICS tweaks. Just a matter of taste.

I'm wanting to flash either Bi-Winning or GCR3? What are everyone's thoughts on each?
I'm sure GCR3 is probably great, but I have not tested it myself. I don't think you can go wrong with Bi-winning. Everything seems to work great on this rom. The minor issue I have with it is that when you receive a voice message using visual voicemail you also receive a text message letting you know you have a voicemail. All else seems flawless, not to mention great support from EDT.
if i were to choose between the two, i'd flash gcr3 first.
I just flashed BiWinning last night and holy balls... this thing is smoother than (insert really smooth thing here). My issue with AOSPish roms is that I actually like SOME TouchWiz apps, like the MMS and the music player. I just throw launcherPro on top of it, and I'm set.
I used the bionix frost mms.apk to remedy that problem on simply honey. You can also flash android stock mms.

I'm loving Bi-Winning Beta 3. But of course I'm a fan of Eugene's work and will have to give it a try.
both B-winning and GCR3 were both on my "to try" list but after flashing a few roms, simply galaxy 2.7.2, trigger 2.9.2 and Darky 9.5, I stopped my search. I am running Darky's 9.5 and it is excellent. That's not to say that GCR3 and bi-winning would not be excellent either, but after flashing a few roms during a week I felt Darky was good enough for me to stop looking for a better rom.
I'm not trying to flame anyone here, Trigger and Simply Galaxy have great teams of devs behind them. Trigger was always my goto benchmark rom, and the EDT guys are great. I ran eugene's roms from the early days of Hybrid and Macnut roms
EDIT:
just tried Bi-winning, it is excellent as well.

Does the Xperia Arc Theme work on Beta 3? It says at the bottom of the post "Beta 3 coming soon" so I didn't think it did. If the theme works I might go for Bi-Winning.

I actually tried Darkys 9.5, but it had some bugs, one of which was a game killer for me (Phone Force Close every time you end a call). I believe a fix for this was posted, but by then I'd moved on.
I decided to go with Bi-Winning a yesterday and it's been awesome so far. No issues and super smooth.
I'll probably try Darkys 9.5 again on the next release. In my opinion it looked better than Bi-Winning, the theme was just really clean.
I've been using Bionix-v 1.3.1 for a while but since simbionix has been on hiatus I decided to switch and try a 2.2.1 rom.
I ended up going with Bi-winning because I read very good reviews and also, this is not a knock on eugene, I've been a fan of his from the beginning. The only thing that turned me off about GCR3 is his volatility. Who knows what will piss him off next and stop support for the rom or pull it from xda (I thought he got rid of his vibrant). I know, weak excuse, but I don't want to flash something that will possibly not be supported down the road. Seems like team EDT is very active in updating and coming out with great stuff so I'll stick with them for now.
On the other hand, I'll probably be going back to TW as soon as they come out with whatever they've been working all this time.
Edit: Apparently he's gone back to the vibrant until he gets his defy fixed.
i flashed both bi-winning and GCR3, i would recommend bi-winning. GCR3 is buggy compared to bi-winning.
I would also recommend bi-winning. I have been using it as a daily driver since friday. No fc's, everthing works. Smooth and fast. I also had fc's on GCR3

What is the best Rooted GB rom on the site that still has Sense?
Im looking for the most stable sense based ROM that is GB.

My opinion is its not on XDA. I think there's only 1 on XDA that even uses the new base; synergy. But I never recommend nightlies to a noob.

Know too that all have issues so please do yourself a favor and read the OP, and read through the forums. Don't pick a ROM like you pick your girlfriends. Use the other head.

I almost feel like I would be happiest with a plain full GB release from verizon with root access so I can remove the Crap Ware.
But that does not seem to be coming any time soon.

But so far AOK.

Cybiks works the other does not. mrinehart is in school and has not had a chance to work on in awhile.
Awesome thanks. Ill restore my back of it today and get messaging working.

OP,
Yes, CM7 is worth it IMO. if you have ran CM7 in another phone, youll be even more impressed with it on the photon. It almost responds faster then my brain does when. milliseconds to open PDf files and apps.
Battery life, yes i do see a GREAT improvement. Joker just released a kernel work for CM7 and will be making further tweaks for Uv that should make it even better! even when i ran it on my EVO, battery life jumped. Yes the photon is already amazing batt life, but CM7 cleans up alota stuff that is really crap in your phone. Im not afraid to travel wo a charger running CM7. on the evo, i would leave for the weekend wo a plug, and this last weekend i did the same thing with running CM7 on my photon.
least try it if you are ok without 4G and share your experience. CM7 is a streamline platform that is PACKED full of goodies. It cleans up your phone and will make it smooth and snappy. It will be a whole new BEAST!
Im glad cybik is with the photon community. his CM7 build is what i have been dreaming for since the day i threw my EVO to the grown.
Honestly, i could careless about ICS with now having CM7. Once team CM builds CM9, if that is ported over then sure as hell ill flash it, but im not a kid waiting for santa now. CM7 has me HAPPY!
disregard post please
^.^ won't work.
CM7 with the new joker kernel works great! It's fast with good battery life. I have no 4G near me (even thought I live in the most densely populated state in the country) so I don't miss it due to unlocking.
do you know if mms and youtube are fixed? and what about being able to use the ext-sd without having to go into CM settings?

Welcome to a new kind of CM7.
I have always loved the simplicity and lightweight feel of CM7. It takes the Android experience and makes it an easy, solid, manageable OS. So what happens when CM7 and the animation filled and lightweight Xperia S launcher collide?
Known Bug List-4G Wimax
Features-Solid CyanogenMOD 7.2 Base-Xperia S Launcher-Xperia Theme for CM7-Some Xperia 3D Widgets-572 MB Free of 816 MB Very lightweight and easy on battery
InstallationBackup your stuff, No need for a disclaimer here you know what you're involved in.Wipe everything as usual. Data, Cache, System, Dalvik
For Barebones CM7 with Xperia Launcher - No theming -Download here:http://d-h.st/Izi and flash as usual
+*For themed version with widgets and wallpapers*+Download this file: http://d-h.st/Ugw And place it in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ -or- sdcard/twrp/backups/ Just put it in your recovery backup folder. Now right click it and unrar it right there in that folder. Should put a folder in /Backup like this 2012-07-25.06.42.20Boot into recovery and go into Backup/RestoreRestore the file and Voila!
Gapps are here, you will need them for either file. Just flash in recovery after you flash/recover rom. http://cmw.22aaf3.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
I will post an Updated .Zip for the themed version once I finish it completely. Still more widgets and changes to bring over from Xperia S Files.
Themed version will more than likely put you on Red-Photon-Recovery V3 if you're not already on it. Just Fyi Don't forget to THANK if you like it!Thank you, AdA
Ill take this one.
Why not one more for the road.
So to use the themed version I just download the backup and restore it on my phone?
I'll give it a go!

Downloaded and restored using CWM... Working great.. Its fast and a good option on CM-7...
Was using CM-7 from Cybik earlier..
Looks purdy, will have to give it a try over the weekend!
Could you tell what tweaks you made to the ROM?
Thanks!
Thanks everyone for the support and I am working on an update now.
Bugs I have found,
When you flash gapps it takes away my 4x4 music widget I have installed, not really a bug but it is different will fix in V2
I cant get my battery meter to go above half charge but my system says its 100% charged. Most likely a theme issue, will fix in V2
Also im coming up with a flashable .zip for the themed version just wanted to get it in your guy's hands quickly and that was the only backdoor to make it happen.
Also my tweaks didn't make it in the rom I have a different kernel im testing but it currently breaks wifi so I didnt release it and I have an MIUI lockscreen that will be in V2.
Thanks for flashing!,

Hi AdA
Just want you to do something
Can u add a search contacts shortcut to this beautiful rom?

Flashed in the morning and have been playing with it since. I lasted 2 hours on only 1% battery, lol. I thought that was cool.
I also noticed the LED doesn't flash when under 10% battery. Apart from that, awesome!

I would love to incorporate a new feature into the rom. But I am having trouble pinpointing exactly what you are requesting?
Maybe try to be a little more detailed?
Thanks,
AdA
Not to take away from the CM7.2 Goodness I let out last night, But updates might be a tab slow on this because of a new project that just dropped in my lap...
If you like jellybean then you will love what is to come, Im taking my Photonbeans build in another direction and this is a teaser from the device it is currently running on.
NO ETA and it may not even see life on the Photon without tons of work but I am making it my sole project outside of Xperia CM7. :highfive:
Looks like a hell of a project. Good luck.
Nice looking rom. So you're working on implementing a sort of tablet mode for Jelly Bean? That would be awesome. The only other one I know of is Paranoid, and that has it's own issues, so an alternative would be nice.

It is Jellybean 4.1, and it is also a tablet rom, It is based off of the kindle Fire and since I have one it is a project im willing to take on. Been running this rom on my kindle fire and it is lifechanging, I need it on my phone...lol:good:
Sweet, I'll def try it out when you release it. Paranoid gives me signal issues on domestic gsm for some reason, but after trying a tablet-based ui on the Photon, it's hard to go back to a regular phone ui.
aa... noob question.. how to use it with twrp??
have anyone tried it??
coz my backup files didnt same with urs..(+o+)
