[Q][ROM] Known Issues of Custom Roms? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, Thanks to the community I've become somewhat comfortable with flashing kernels and roms but I'm afraid I still have some questions and requests
Does anyone know of any list that outlines known issues of various custom roms?
For example I found out that Cyanogenmod7 has issues with the camera, for example in my case when i start recording a video, its zoomed in and cant zoom out, etc

Check the development thread relating to the particular rom or kernel ? There's no "easy way" to find this stuff out. It either takes reading/research on your part, or trying the rom/kernel out for yourself & learning that way.

I just did cm7 and find that apps that i dont even use are turning on randomly. Even if i close all running apps right away they will start to come back on again.

Are you recording in 1080p?
It will be like that on all ROMs, it's to do with the way the camera handles 1080p recording.
It's been explained better elsewhere on the forum, but basically it takes a full size image from the sensor and crops it down to 1920x1080 to reduce the processing it has to do.
This won't be as prominent in 720p if you try it, that's handled differently although I can't remember how exactly.

Custom roms all have issues often posted on front page other issues are found as users try the phone and report back .
As said CM7 front page post one .
Upon review of user feedback and bugs that have been discovered with what was released as 7.1.0 stable, we no longer feel the 'stable' tag is appropriate for this rom.
The download is still available, however it is now being treated as a Release Candidate, rather than a proper stable release.
Sorry for all the confusion, and any issues you may experience. We will release a 7.1+ once we feel the ROM has matured to a truly stable status.

Checkrom 3 got rid of my notification bar, sd card, and a few other things, had 2 format my internal sd card and flash a new rom.

Thanks guys yeh i realise that they post the issues but they aren't as specific as id hoped thats all.. I really love custom roms, but i just hope there's one with out errors with camera and one with a music app that enables the 5.1 surround on my phone

Best Custom Rom Suited for Individual Needs

I could have sworn i saw a post on here asking "What's your fave Rom/ What Rom are you using" but i cant seem to find it anywhere. Regaurdless, if i get yelled at, i get yelled at.
Wanted to know your all's opinions on latest roms available. Maybe you can help me out for the best choice. This post is not to discriminate but rather to pick the best choice for my needs for the moment.
I use wifi alot
I stream movies alot
I am a FB addict
I take lots of vids and pics
I text and make lots of calls
I change widgets frequently
I use the browser alot
and yes i LOVE S VOICE!!
So with those things said, i am currently running the latest Team Perfection Rom and the only complaint i have is the freeze ups. Once it even froze while i was trying to call someone back. The Contacts froze. I like this rom alot and i am no stranger to the flashing/modding community, just a bit rusty. Which Rom would you all refer to me to get less lag (prefer none at all) or which changes should i make the the Team Perfection rom? Any responses would be amazing! Thank you in advance!:cyclops:
If you use the s-apps, and pen a lot, I would get a mostly stock rom, such as this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766933
If not, getting the cm9 nighties will give a pretty unmatched experience.
howdy there, well the function of the s pen for me has become a need...just like the fact that I can snap shot and just draw/write on it...very cool, and all the stock ROM have this, but there are few of the custom ROMs that still keep the ics trend going, since the darkness I like within the theming, Black Star has this, and I use as my DD, there are the Official ICS, Pure & Odexed & Stock Rooted, Zipaligned, Deodexed...so on these are great stable and lag free imho. But most all the Custom ROMs are...so like you mentioned it will be your call.
those requirements you listed...are must like mine...but not FB...
I have a thread put together with all the goodies around our threads, see if anything you see grabs you:

if you have questions...I am not an expert, but just holler, there are lots of good, knowledgable peps around here....kk

Help me educate myself on the differences between ROMs.

Good morning or evening to all,
this is my first post on the forum, so please by patient. I am new to the world of custom ROMs and I tried to educate myself by reading the noob guides. However, my questions become more and more widespread, and I am not sure where to try to find the answers.
To be clear: I am NOT asking about 'what ROM is best' and such. I would like to know more about the following:
1) There are CM7 ROMs (Netrino for example), CM9 and CM10 ROMs. As I understand it, because there have been stock files from MOTO, CM& ROMs can have stable kernels, hardware acceleration etc etc. However, if there is no hardware acceleration, how can CM9 ROMs be smoother?
2) In the same vain, how can CM9 and 10 ROMs have kernels? Where they written from scratch? And how can they be faster than stock?
3) Due to my SOD problems, I flashed several ROMs and currently have a CM9 one, which is stable so far. If I go back to a CM7 one, such as Netrino 2.9, what differences would I see? Will the latter be faster or more efficient? Smoother? Or should I just leave it alone, since it works?
4) And to reverse the question, how can a CM10 ROM be smoother, if it does not have hardware acceleration and drivers?
I am sorry about the bombardment. I do not want to waste anybody's time, but some pointers would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
to give you a shorter answer for better understanding:the stock roms are mostly based on android 2.3.6 which is the newest firmware.the roms only differ from the regions and mostly have battery tweaks or connection tweaks etc...
lets go to cm 9 and 10.cm9 is basically android4.0 and cm10 android 4.1.these are faster because they do not have many unnecessary apps like stock roms do.
i hope this explains a bit...

Thanks for the answer, peddarson.
Can it be that the only difference between roms is the absence of apps? Then, netrino should be the fastest of them all. And where does the absence of hardware acceleration and drivers factor in?
A few of your questions could be easily answered just by flashing the roms and seeing for yourself. Or Googling.
For example, you keep asking about hardware acceleration without knowing what it does or what it means. If you did, you'd know it plays a much bigger role with how apps function than the UI. The "smoothness" described in CM10 is with the UI and not the apps themselves (hint), while certain programs like the camera app, Chrome, etc. have a tendency to be unstable (hint.) You might be able to piece together that the UI isn't as ha-dependent as you thought. Maybe the visual experience has more to do with the actual software than hardware.
The answer to a few other of your questions is that these ROMs play off an original source and then tweaked to be optimized to the author's liking. Kernels can be overclocked, memory management can be altered, etc. If you want to know specifics, look into what each specific ROM does. It's right there in black and white.

The thing is that, as I said, I do not want to flash the ROMs (again) and see. I am not interested in learning the specific merits or disadvantages of each. I just want some pointers on what hardware acceleration does, how it synergizes with the UI, how different ROMs come about with or withoit drivers etc. And because I don't know, I ask (hint). Your post, for example, clarified some of these things, sarcasm aside. It would clarify even more if you could provide some links for me to pursue.
Haha. Welcome to XDA. People are quite unforgiving and harsh with noobs, I appologize on their behalf. I am still pretty new myself but for the past 4 months, I have read and learned quite a lot and have flashed many roms.
My first love was actually neutrino. I always seem to crawl back to neutrino rom because it is ridiculously smooth and stable for me. I've seen many people have issues here and there but I really have no complaints about neutrino. I have tried CNA, which is a port by Bill based off of CM10. I was quite impressed with how nicely it ran. The battery life wasn't as good as I'd like and I require a camera so I flashed back to neutrino.
There are two new cm7 based roms that have surfaced recently, Atrix MRom and TopSmarts. I tried MRom and it is quite a nice rom. I wasn't a fan of the Holo Launcher that it uses so now I'm on TopSmarts. This rom has been great for me. Like I said, I always end up back with neutrino but this is quite the contender. It's pretty new and only the first version so it will most likely be updated often.
I'd give a couple cm7 roms a go, if I were you. Just make sure you make a Nandroid backup of your current rom so you can always restore. I feel that Cm7 roms have much better battery life and tend to be more stable. The only issue I have with cm7 is there's no webtop option. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with TopSmarts or Neutrino. Both of the devs are also really friendly and quite helpful.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions, you're welcome to PM me.

Wait, what? Then what's this?
"If I go back to a CM7 one, such as Netrino 2.9, what differences would I see? Will the latter be faster or more efficient? Smoother?"
Come on, guy.
Google hardware acceleration and you might find out that, like I suggested with my previous post, it doesn't necessarily have to do with the UI. Sorry, but I'm not spoon-feeding you links that you could have found in less time than making this post.
I've already explained the different ROMs are based on current software and then ported/tweaked. If you looked at the bugs with each ROM, you'd figure out the holes that drivers would fix.
nw21st (Alphabet district, amirite?) had a great suggestion which was that cm7 roms were easily the most stable. Why? Atrix has drivers up to 2.3.6 so nothing's missing. If you're wondering what differences you'll see in cm7 vs cm9 then you aren't using your phone enough, eg, camcorder. That's fine. Loads of people are on cm9/10 and accept the bugs and limitations. But hands down, cm7 ROMs will remain the most stable.

1) Optimization, mainly
2) Motorola released the sources of each Atrix kernel (International, EMEA, ATT etc...). Devs can use it to make tweaked, optimized versions
3) By flashing a CM7, you will go back on Gingerbread (GB). CM9 = ICS and CM10 = Jelly Bean (JB). The main differences you can see are the different interfaces (GB looks ugly to me now...) and some apps like Chrome are missing on GB. Also CM7 is super stable, if you want a stable and customizable ROM then you should try it.
4) CM10 had a lot of optimizations all based around apps preloading/compiling (To be verified), also the animations were changed to make it look smoother. Stuffs like scrolling, animations are smoother on ICS/JB than GB because of optimizations too. If you flash CM7 you'd have the same kind of "smooth feeling" because of a high framerate but the apps won't load as fast as with CM9/10.
Personally I use CM10 even if it's not well supported (Not as well as GB) but ICS/JB is coming soon so I'm trying to get used to it for when it officially comes. I consider GB as a legacy OS, there won't be anything really new/innovative on it since Google doesn't develop any new app on it.

Hi welcome to SGS2 forum
Just some advice first, In here we expect some common sense when asking for help and common sense would dictate that you give relevant information like what rom and kernel you're using etc etc.
Have you checked your roms thread for info?
Have you re-flashed?
Tried other kernel?

It happens on stock rom, diaster and slim. I havent tried other roms yet.
You know skype, google+, stock camera so i can take pictures of me making duckface
that is certainly interesting, i have seen a few roms with actually broken camera apps, that give errors, once you activate the silly faces effect on the front facing camera.
also there is a known bug of google+ on several samsung devices including ours, that makes hangouts less than pleasant, i.e. not working at all most of the time.
but given that you experienced it on several roms and in all circumstances actually points to kernel issues, i agree with theatheist. (the rest was just for general information).
when it comes to recommending kernels, it really comes down to what rom you are currently running and personal preference.

[q] stock rom better?

I just had a brand new GS3 and have been playing with it quite a lot these past days
I've done many things such as root it, download free paid apps with it, used different launchers with it, etc.
But the latest thing I did, to see what all the fuss was about was to upgrade my GS3 to Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly
I mean a lot of people are doing it so I thought it was all good, well at least at the beginning it seemed to be
I have to say at first glance it seemed like a great deal for me, having a spanking new lockscreen, notification bar, overall stock phone and messaging applications, and a sleek looking camera
Everything looked fine, until I tried out many of the new stuff out...
First of all the new camera was pretty ok but had one major drawback for me, the HDR mode
You see in the original GS3 ROM the cameras HDR mode was like lightning, you wouldn't notice that it takes separate photos to make the unified, balanced exposure photo
While in the new camera you can notice a time delay of something like .2-.5 seconds between each photograph that the camera takes in order to make you new HDR photo
The result? a badly stitched photo because of shaky hands. And even using "great" paid camera apps produced the same results
Next in the phone application itself, it looked nice and dandy until I noticed that the option for video calling totally disappeared...
And can I say video calling is by far one of my most used things in my GS3 if not the most after the texting and normal calls
I mean hey, I can make a video call anytime anywhere without internet isn't that awesome?!?
Well actually those two are my only real problems... the others could be the disappearance of my stock Samsung apps such as S Note or S Memo but those can be easily replaced with similar apps from the Play Store, and of course what other stock Samsung apps that dissapeared were the Samsung App store, S Voice, etc. which I liked to have been taken out
That said the Cyanogenmod ROM for me looked more like a launcher with added features but nothing else more, it did not have much of it's own "original" apps and that was kind of okay I guess
BUT MY CONCLUDING QUESTION IS
are all custom ROMs like this? will they all overwrite my beautiful video calling and camera capabilities or was it just the Cyanogenmod ROM?
I'm looking up into other ROMs like "Universe S4 ROM" or "Imperium ROM" for my GS3 and just wanted to know before I either invest a good amount of time or just waste it if those ROMs will or will not take out the bad and add mroe good to my GS3 especially the "Universe S4 ROM" since it said that it will add apps that are exclusive to the GS4 like the S Translate.
Thanks in advance for the replies!
CM and camera is a well posted problem .
You have to do some research first then decide if what the custom rom offers outweighs the bugs .
The S4 apps are a work in progress some work 100% some fail others have bugs that developers try and solve .
You would be better to stick with a stock rooted rom or even a bare bones stock custom Samsung rom .

Thank you very much for this!
I'm still wondering if there are custom ROMs that still have the video call and camera the GS3 or are my only options really those bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs? If so where can I look to have an easier time finding those types of ROMs I need?
And is an GS4 ROM one of those stock rooted ROM or bare bones stock custom Samsung ROMs that you're talking about or is it a totally different ROM already that doesn't have the video call and camera that I'm looking for?
Because I see all of these ROMs and their offers but I don't know where to look within the forums to know if they do or do not have the two simple aspects that I'm looking for.

But as with the other reply I still have the same question.
Can I still make standard Samsung/Android video calls with this one and is the S4 camera that comes with this as good (or better) than the S3 camera?
I really do hope it does and I'll give it a shot!

By default, this ROM comes with S3 camera. You can find the S4 camera in Aroma. But the S4 camera is quite buggy, video recording some other functions are not wroking yet. Henry is trying his best to make it work. I would reccomend you to try Glamour S4 ROM. Brilliantly smooth and excellent.
In my opinion, cyanogenmod is the most overrated rom in the android. Just a little speed improvement and lots of missing features and problems.
You should try roms based on samsung roms.

My First Impressions about the LegacyXperia CM10.1 and CM10.2

I currently Using Custom Roms for the past 6 months.... I make my phone (Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i)) as the tester for every ROMs. I also use it for personal. Well... Im not hating the Stock rom from sony, but sometimes im really desperate about those latest ROMs like Android 4.1 - 4.3 (and Even ANDROID 4.4 KITKAT). So, I try to make my phone's bootloader unlock, by using the official method. the DRMs are lost but it's ok, because i dont buy any musics online.
After I unlocked the Bootloader, I try the other roms... Im always want to see every post in every thread about those roms, until I saw this LegayXperia which is kinda cool.
So... here is my Very First Impressions about the CM10.1 and CM10.2 by LegacyXperia.... The System UI is much similar to the stock google ROMs, but this is the best roms that i can get, because of some reasons:
1. I like the Stock UI (not the sony UI from ICS).
2. I want the Rom that has good memory management, no more no less.
3. And lastly, It updates constantly such as builds and realeases.
There are the Few bugs, but The developers really tried their best as much as they could do, as long as the Roms got the best performance, I expreimented the tweaks and bandwidths and stuff. I try to fix the issues of my phone such as overheat, the top part of the screen isnt responding, and the battery draining issues. I applied the tweaks from different thread and it works flawlessly, no battery drain issues (governor tweak), no touchscreen issues (touch screen fix), and the bandwidth is much stable(change bandwidth). I cant remember those links, but you have to try check it out on the other threads or seach at google, it might be help.
NOTE: im not judging other roms. I just sharing my thoughts about these ROMs.
You should post this kinda of stuff in the dedicated ROMs thread in the android development section. And please read:
