Monitor mobile network data consumption - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi,
it seems to me that my Razr uses a lot of mobile data.
I have already enabled data saver, however it's been using slightly below 60mb in the last week or so. As my contract limits my bandwith after 200mb, this really sucks. I used to have an HTC Desire and with comperable usage, I never ran into trouble with the 200mb limit.
Is there any way to monitor which app uses how much wireless data?? The weird thing is: I am using Call Meter 3g as Data Monitor, it shows 58mb, using the built-in app in Settings -> Data Manager it says 10.43mb - which one can I trust?? Anybody know any other freeware data monitor app or experiencing any comperable problems?
Thanks in advance,
val

Are you on the Verizon network? If so, the My Verizon app has a data monitor widget.

I would definitely suggest adding some data hungry apps to auto end in the task manager. Facebook, G+, RSS feed readers, even browsers can pull data in the background.

I recommend Onavo. Give it a try. It is free on Market.

If you want that, download System Panel
the only really effective way, I think anyway, to ensure you don't go over is to check your account info on your providers website (or call them to find out your usage)
Also its extra but get smartlimits, where it txt u if yur close, and lets u set it to say 80 mb u get a msg. Depends on carrier

log into market and download the app perfect system monitor. it has settings to show upload and download on home screen as well as temp sd storage, internal and cpu speed. workes like a charm
id say phone usage is the best, u can also set bill roll over dates has alerts too.
only the donate version allows widgets though.
3G Watchdog
Free from market here: https://market.android.com/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog&feature=search_result
Peace
Dodol phone usage is the best I've found and covers calls/texts and free billing numbers and inclusive minutes/texts.
Traffic Counter, free app from the market, works great for managing limited calling plans, text messaging plans, and data plans.
It allows you to set up alarms, create limits, view up to date usage, and review historical data to help you choose the best plans to meet your needs.
Also, I suggest also using APNdroid, free app from the Market, that allows you to add a widget to your home screen to quickly on/off toggle your data, but still allows sms/mms. I leave my data off at all times, except when I need it. This also saves battery.

[Q] Axtrix Data Hog

Hey, I am new to Android, with the Atrix being my first android device. I am 11 days into a new month on my contract and have already used up a bit over 1GB of my 2GB data plan. I came from using an HTC Tilt 2, and putting the Tilt 2 threw about the same amount of use would only use about 500MB a month. To check whether it was my internet use I checked my data usage, then did not use any internet for 12 hours. When I checked my data usage again my Atrix had used about 60MB of data without me running a single application. I was wondering if this is something common to Android devices I will have to deal with, or should I contact AT&T about this? Thanks for any help in advance.

do you have any apps that are syncing periodically?
The only data services I am aware of are my Email sync and a weather sync, which I do not think should be anywhere near enough data traffic to account for all the data use.
install 3g watchdog or something similar. There's a monitoring app that monitors how much data a specific app is using (paid version). There's been a few posts here with Atrix owners with runaway data hogs, I haven't seen any definitive explanation yet though .
Did you sync dropbox, download one of the mp3/ringtone programs, and are streaming pandora or something?
Also settings > data delivery > social applications > check to sync over wifi only.

i just got notice i am being charged $10 more per 1GB used over my 2GB plan. doesnt matter to me, my company pays the bill and i am the IT guy and it isnt an issue.
i asked out AT&T rep what other options are out there.. he says 2GB for 40 or the 4gb for 60. the tethering plan is "not yet available"
this being said, i think we need to just watch our usage until there is the tethering options. of course, i applied the little trick i found here and only have the 2gb plan. EASILY went over that though. . .

Yeah, after realizing how much data is being used I have installed a data watching app last night. And thanks for the link to the other thread, maybe there is a problem with a few select handsets that over use data.

I have been streaming music from a grooveshark app, but according to AT&T's data calculator it would take about an hours of streaming a day everyday for a month to reach how much data I have used and I have only streamed for maybe 30-40 minutes a day over 5 or 6 days so far. And I will do that in my options, thanks for the advice.

Just a thought, did you leave the facebook app open for awhile? I only ask as I just realized leaving the app open for an hour drained my battery by 20%.
Hate to see if any data was used

Wow, well that sucks; as others suggested you should definitely get an applications that tracks your data usage.
I have been using Data Usage Widget for a while now and love it; shows both cell and wifi data.
Be wary of what you use whsb surfing the web and set the flash download to "on demand"; by doing this, pages load faster and you can click and then watch flash content by discressiom, rather than it downloading all links from a page.

for data usage apps i recommend consume.. its amazing in all ways and shows local phone data usage in widget form (in optional widget form)
I've read posts where some state that AT&T's data usage figures include data pulled/pushed while on WiFi and cellular, instead of cellular only data. Some kind of bug I'd bet. But I have no personal knowledge of this, still it does make one wonder.
Let's just all be greatful its not like a WP7 device. I had one and in 1 month it racked up 3GB of data on its own and I wasn't surfing or downloading.

Best app to monitor app-by-app data usage

Whats the best application to use to monitor data usage that breaks down usage app-by-app?
I'm currently using 3g Watchdog Pro, but was wondering if there's something better?
I'm using Onavo. It shows you a breakdown of all your apps that use data and the respective amounts as well. It also plots your usage patterns etc. Handy app for tracking data usage on the fly.
I use "My Data Free"
It lives in the notification bar so its always available even if you dont use the widget....still has cool widget though. Breaks down data usage by app and you can even get a pie chart if thats your thing. tracks WiFi, regular data AND roaming data....its the BEST!

I use Onavo too, very handy, lets you set your data cycle start/end date, and seems to be pretty accurate.
Trafiic monitor is a good that breaks down what your apps are using.
+1 for Onavo. In addition to the usage breakdown by app, it gives you a heads up on potential data hogs when you first install them.

yeh thats the killer question
but most people judge what uses battery by what keeps phone awake, or how much time the app uses the CPU,but ive never actually seen any app that tells simply how much battery an app uses

exactly where in there does it actually show "battery" usage???
It's not a simple app, you have to define a start point (default is since it was last charged i think), and you can look at which apps are using up all your battery and why. Use 'Process' to see apps.
The developers is an XDA member, I can't remember his name but i'm sure you can find him using google or forum search.

I'm pretty sure he means the one you found, "My Data Manager free". It's a nice free app, does a good job of breaking down data usage by wifi and mobile by app. You can set your data limits, when your billing period starts, etc. and it will make the pretty bar and pie charts for you. More importantly than the aesthetics, it does a good job of pointing out what apps are using up your data. For instance, I noticed that Google Currents was pulling down over 20 meg a night, which is all fine and dandy when on wifi, but if not, that's 600 Meg a month for something I barely used.

Very High Data Consumption by "Android OS + others" on XT910

Hi, I have a non-rooted RAZR XT910 (OTA Updated just a few days back to 65.1.40.XT910.AsiaRetail.en.03).
I absolutely love this phone and am eagerly waiting for some functional ICS goodness but I have been facing some issues with high consumption of data.
I have Onavo installed to monitor data usage (Installed it a little too late, relying on my service provider's text notifications).
The two most data hungry applications in the "App Watch" section are "Android OS + others" & the official Facebook application.
Three days in to my billing cycle, "Android OS + others" has already hit 51.7 MB and Facebook is up to 19.4 MB. I haven't opened the Facebook application even once in the last week, so whatever data it has pulled is background data. My OTA updates are allowed only over WiFi. And I have also disabled the "Back up my data" option, under Privacy > Settings but that doesn't seem to have helped much, if at all. Neither did the OTA update.
Before Onavo reset the data usage meter for the new billing cycle, "Android OS + others" had used about 150 MB of data in a week and Facebook about 40 MB.
Can anyone help me out here? I need to reduce this phantom data usage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have that too. I'm running rooted 167.19. first I suspected the gallery app with its motocast service so I freezed this app for one day, but it didn't helped. every now and then these few app processes (which are sadly only listed in one package so I don't exactly know which one causes the traffic) upload about 2mb somewhere. sometimes they also upload 2x 2mb, pause for some time and then there is an other upload of 2mb a few hours later. i'm monitoring traffic with droidstats and checking my consumed traffic online from my providers website.
I installed driodwall for blocking android-os service and these others from up- and downloading via 3g, just allowing wifi. this was also before the update with 651.73.30. full wipe already done - does not help ... still testing if blocking helps
This sucks but good to know I'm not the only one facing this problem with the RAZR.
I did start looking at other forums and seems like the problem is not only with the RAZR. There are other handsets which face a similar issue. Let us hope we get some insight into this problem.
i read about that defy users experience this high consumption too.
since I blocked android-OS (and all of these other processes in this package) from 3G network my traffic for today for corporate mail + 2x imap idle accounts + weather update is about 800KB. yesterday I had about 15MB for doing the same - nothing.
that helps for now but I still don't know which process exactly uploads so much stuff ... and why..
Just an update. Things still the same. VERY heavy data usage. Facebook is upto a 100MB even though I barely ever open the application now. Android OS + Others is around 200 Megs too. 300MB of my monthly 500MB data allowed is gone. Just like that. Any suggestions anyone?
That could be traffic originating from outside. Try connecting to another network and see if you see the same behavior.
With my Android, when I connect to my home WiFi network, "OS Services" take up about 2kb an hour while idle. But, when I connect to my work WiFi network, it takes up about 2mb every hour while idle. I am pretty sure my work network is doing a lot of snooping (in the name of security).
Facebook is understandable though don't ya think? It syncs all your contacts and birthdays and thongs of that nature.

Solutions?
No solutions or updates so far? Same problem here: Sony Xperia S, Android 2.3.7 (Build .75), 500MB dataplan and the OS takes 300 of that! I already took some precautions like turning of the backup, I've logged out of Facebook and removed my Hotmail app. And I installed JuiceDefender Plus which handles my connections, but no results whatsoever: Android OS still uses 5-10MB/day...
Any help would be very, very welcome.
Find the option for "Sync over wifi only" inside of settings, that should save a bunch. I've never had that problem, infact I have the opposite issue. I use maybe 100MB of my 500MB plan. Sometimes I even TRY to use up my data for the month and fail. I use the Facebook app maybe 10 times a month, most of my data goes towards sports scores, twitter, and reddit. As for the Android OS, the bloatware included on the phone are considered part of the "Android OS" so it's not really the OS using all the data. Open up the task manager and set all the bloatware to auto-end, might help a bit
Just posted in another thread about this. I some how used 25 megabytes on the way to and from work today with the phone in my pocket. 15 minutes each way.
Also accumulated about 280 "free" minutes this weekend between my wife and I. I thought weekends were free. Well I know they are supposed to.
Back to sprint and slow unlimited data as apposed to fast data that's going to break the bank. Just as I was starting to like the phone.
Call them tonight to tell them I was switching. Glad I'm withiny fourteen days.
Hey, didn't notice the replies till now. But do you have any task managers auto ending apps?
That was what caused high data consumption in my case. A self starting task when killed, may restart itself and it's data consumption process from 0.
Once I disabled that, data consumption fell to normal ranges. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Background Data Restricted

Hello i seem to be having battery life problems because of mobile data, it sis constantly on because of the apps that use the internet while in the background. Therefore my phone is constantly using 3G and wastes heaps of battery.
So I'm asking, does anyone know how to restrict background data so no apps will be using the mobile data?
Ans don't tell me to use task killer because task killers constantly use data as well and if u kill an app, it just comes back.
Thanks.

Go into the market, search for 'onavo' and it should pull up an app that says 'onavo count'. Download it, set it up, and then search for the app that's hogging data within the onavo app. Click on it and tell onavo to restrict it to wifi only. Then, the app you restricted will be killed if it tries to use background data.
Onavo does not require root access
You can also use 'DroidWall' from the market if you're rooted. You can choose what apps have access to the Internet through mobile data aswell as Wifi. I only let apps I actually use have access to the Internet and all others have no connection even if I myself try to use it, unless I add them to the whitelist.
