I mean honestly why couldn't they have left the volume button off and put another port or speaker or something! Honestly they could have integrated the volume nicely into their quick settings bar!
Or better yet made the a piece of the bezel with capacitive volume buttons...
I think they volume buttons where a waste of time on asus's part!
I know they are nice to have but common be different!
Also does this have a orientation lock switch?
A side note I really live ICS's spell check and copy and paste its so much nicer than gingerbread! Except its not the same through out like Gmail for example is different the the browser which bugs me! Lol

Come on now SMH. Of course it's needed. It don't need another speaker grill as most that actually have device in possession said the sound is great. .

You don't turn the volume up and down while the device is off lol

Let's hope it is better than your PC36100
I was disappointed at first about the single speaker, however I've remedied this with some Logitech bluetooth speakers. The lack of a volume button is one of my only gripes with my Kindle Fire, so yes I think it is absolutely necessary to have a button.
I'd be willing to bet, that if they added an extra speaker, and left off the volume control, that I'd be reading a thread titled "Is there a reason for the extra speaker"... blah blah blah they could have put a volume button in its place, and other nonsense.
because otherwise every single app would need to add some way of adjusting volume in the app?
waste of time and space? I doubt having a volume rocker wastes much of either.
Also, volume rocker needed to boot into that fast boot mode or whatever. If device is soft bricked, it needs hardware button combination of volume and power to bring it into that mode to fix the issue or hard reset to take back to factory defaults/rom.

what dock bar? When you are playing shadowgun on your prime you expect there to be a dock bar so you can adjust the volume? It doesn't work like that and would look really bad if it did
Your point is interesting. Amazon chose not to put hardware volume on the Kindle Fire and that is one of the points that they are getting skewered on. So I am guessing that the software only volume control is in the minority. At least on Android devices.

But either way, its a solution for a non existent problem.

Still I do not see why android needs any physical buttons...
Everything would looks so nice without them!
I see the need like you said to get to the restore and such as I use that often! All I see android needing is 1 power button but even that could be just like slide over like the back of the PS Vita!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I don't use the volume button much, I wish there would be an orientation lock which I use much more frequently than volume adjustment.
Also I don't quite like the HC/ICS way of copy/paste, you have to move far away from the text you just selected to press the copy button. I think it look cool but not intuitive.
I used to think the volume button wasn't important on a tablet, then I got shot in the knee with an arrow.

I think the volume rocker is needed. I find it very inconvenient if one needs to click the menu and adjust the volume every single time. I think its one of the reason why there are short cuts on you laptops that allows you to adjust the volume. For example if you are playing a first play shooter game and you want to adjust the volume, having to go into menu, change the volume will very likely get you killed.
And also, I think the reason Asus choose the single speaker instead two speaker is due to the size of the speaker. Instead of using two smaller mediocre speaker they chose to include one really good speaker which is bigger in size. Simply removing the volume rocker there wouldn't be enough space to add that second speaker. And also there's problem with the cost.

Well, for me, the only thing that made my droidx2 not perfect, was the home row of buttons. I always figured, why ruin the touchscreen experience with a clicking button thats basically a small slit. Now dont get me wrong, i dont mind buttons like on the charge, which were huge and pretty nice to press. But the ones on the dx2 and X1 were kind of a let down. So, i searched around and got hold of an app called SoftKeys, and i feel like even though it might be an extra click to bring up the buttons, i dont have to shift my hands to firmly press the buttons anymore, giving me much more fluid use of my phone. Hope this comes of use to anyone else sick of their buttons!
I attached some pics of them running on my phone, so you can see that it persists as a little button to press on, that you call in the home row.
This is pretty sweet. I will have to download and try it out. The softkeys are the worst on these phone. I much prefer to have them as a touch screen extension. Plus, when you are laying in bed at night surfing XDA on your DX2 and your spouse in sleeping so soundly next to you, the CLICK sound that the back button makes after you are done reading a post could easily disrupt the ZZZ's. Just me? lol
I'll come back and let you know how I like it.
PS: What is that battery widget on your homescreen. I NEED IT!
The battery meter im using is called battery monitor widget ver 2.0.6. and my gf is a light sleeper so i am in that boat lol.
Thanks! I've been using one but I'd rather have a widget than have it hanging out in my notification bar.
I use Button Savior. The developer has kept up development on it and it is really pretty nice. It now does all the main hardware buttons, volume control, phone button, etc. It's pretty nice. Just my $0.02, adjusted for inflation, of course.

I have to agree this button savior seems very nice. My back button is starting to sink in. So this is nice to have I did not care for soft keys that much.
Man the more I use this the better I like it. Wish I knew about this app before. I tried the soft keys but missed moon shadows post about this app.
Hi folks,
Have you heard if ICS implementation includes plan to get rid of Touch key (capacitive button) on Galaxy Note I717?
I'm so tired of constantly pressing buttons by accident. (It's most likely the way I hold my phone but still that's the way I feel most comfortable)
What are your thoughts folks? Should these buttons be something I should be embracing instead? Should I go back to iphone? (just kidding!)
Seriously, does anyone know if they are going to remove these buttons?
Quick answer is no. You might be able to disable them and use icons.

What he said^^
While some wish to not have them period, many still make use of them everyday and to be honest, on screen only buttons arn't 100% reliable. I have only a home button on my Nook Color and rely on OnScreen buttons and sometimes you'll be tapping them with no response, but tapping the hom button works. If given the option to disable in lieu of Button Savior i would certainly try it out, but I would never want the buttons disabled completely with no option to enable.
Right I meant option to disable! I wonder if ROM developers will consider this option for my model
I know that when ics alpha came out on the Astrix it had the ics icon buttons even though the Astrix uses capacitive buttons. Later the touch buttons were removed

On my Galaxy Nexus they were as much reliable as capacitive buttons. On screen buttons, in my opinion, is a plus for Android.

I love on screen buttons and use them all the time, I'm just saying I do not want the hardware capability removed, just optional. I preferred Button Savior, if you havn't tried them give it a whirl, they are great.
I really don't mind the buttons. I just got my note last night and didn't think the s-pen not being able to use them would be a big deal. However, it is.....
BUT my biggest problem is the home and menu buttons are flipped compared to my tbolt. It's going to take awhile to adjust to that.
Is that how all samsung phones are?

Love the new EVO. Love. It.
With that said, though, I do have a minor nit to pick. I find myself constantly hitting the volume rockers by accident. I don't know if the larger screen puts my fingers in a different position than when I was holding the old EVO, but I definitely don't recall having this problem before. That, or maybe these buttons are just a lot more sensitive.
Anyone else?
Ive been having the same issue.
I have the issue when I try to take a picture. I end up changing the ringer volume every time. I think it is something I will get used to though. With my Epic, the volume rocker was directly across from the lock/unlock button, so I would change the volume every time I locked the screen. I did get used to it though.
I have the same problem too

I have the same problem but only because on my Nexus they are right where the power button is. I am still hitting them thinking I will turn the screen off.
One thing is I guess since the screen is bigger sometimes inputting my lock screen gesture it reads part of my palm and resets. Slightly annoying

Hello Guys,
I am having the weird issue of the home button making a clicking noise whenever its pressed at the middle of the button, if pressed at the edges it does not make any sound. The button as such look and feel sturdy.
Is this normal or is it a defect and can be replaced in warranty?
Also the sound can only be heard in a relatively quite room..
Kindly move it if it is not the appropriate thread in this section
Home button does clicking sound on every s3 i quess, so i think it's normal.
Thanks for that jnr21, However i was asking this because, some of my friends reported they do not have any sound coming while pressing the home button though i have not verified it first hand from their device.
I have a clicking sound when pressing the middle hard enough. If i press it on the side and dont use very much force, it still registers as a press, but the button itself doesn't make the click sound. I think its pretty normal considering the construction of the button
Exactly the same thing i am also facing However i have also read elsewhere that for some people it does not make any clicking sound and the device can be replaced in such a case. Any idea about this?
I get this as well always thought utilities was normal, not causing any problems so there's no problems for me

This clicking is news to me. I don't hear any clicking from my S3.
There are reports of rattling too from near the top of the phone. I don't hear any rattles either though.
I think I prefer a non-clicking and non-rattling S3, although some other peeps prefer some clicks and rattles.
I dont have a clicking sound, but a do get a click feel when pushing the button.
The first to days I didnt get any click at all and I wasnt sure when the button was actually pressed.
Evey time I would push the button it would squish down. I was sure that the reason was that the button was too "new" and that it needed to be "broken in". I gave it a few days of use and now the button works perfectly. I get the clicking feeling but no sound.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda app-developers app
My first S2 had that issue. Well wouldn't call it an issue, more of an irritant.
The following S2s I've owned after that didn't have the clicking sound. As long as the button works and doesn't get stuck I wouldn't call it a defect.
Well did ur first s2's button went bad after some use?
It's just that I wud have more peace of mind if it dint make any sound....

My home button works wonderfully. Its flush with the phone. Like someone else said, if pressed soft it doesn't make a clicking sound, but if pressed quickly, it will. I don't think every GSIII has exactly the same home button. I also don't think its worth it to return one because it clicks. I mean if its not working thats another story. When mine does make a clicking sound, its noticeable, yet 100% in working order as it should.
Love it !! :good:
I think they are brilliant, never in the way when using phone, perfect position when needed. I would like a shutter button though, or at least they move the buttons closer to top of screen in camera app. When doing video, the stop button is hard to reach.
