Buying this for my wife for Christmas. - Motorola Photon 4G

I decided to buy this phone for my wife. She will be coming from a rooted HTC Evo. I've scanned the forums and this seems like a amazing phone. Are there any issues that I should know about?
She loves her Evo and I'm sure going to motto blur will take her some use to get the hang of, since (no pun intended) she's only owned HTC phones. I just don't want any major issues to make her want to go back to her Evo.
I've heard great things about the reception, wi fi, 3g signal/speeds. Only knock I have read is the camera and the screen is iffy for some people.
Thanks in advance for any posts.

Having had the Evo for over a year, I can certainly attest for this phone. As much as I loved my Evo, I love my Photon just as much. The only issue I've seen at all is the camera quality can occasionally take a dip for reasons I've yet to figure out, and HTC definately had the better camera drivers. However, that right there is really the only issue I've had with it. Got it about 3 months ago I believe, and after the first few updates, I've had nothing but great times with it. And as an employee for Sprint in a Service and Repair location, I can also say that I RARELY see the MoPho come back with problems. Initially, there was a problem where after making a call in roaming, the earpiece would stop working until the phone was rebooted. However, Motorola made quick work of that with a few quick maitinence updates.
Biggest plus about the Photon IMO is definitley its antennae. The service I get with this thing is absolutely INCREDIBLE. In the store I work at, my coworkers have various other phones, and they all get 2 or maybe 3 bars on a good day. However, I have a constant 4 in the same exact location. Never had a dropped call with it either that was the fault of my end. So yes, Motoblur takes a little getting used to, but they really did a good job with tweaking it for this phone, and after about a week or so, it feels incredibly smooth.
tl;dr
Good call. She'll love it.

I so agree with the signal strength. I had the photon then traded for the galaxy 2 (big mistake) went back as quick as I could. Signal is so much better.

I think that you are making a good purchase for your wife. She will enjoy it.

Just switched my wife from the Evo to the Photon this weekend. I don't think she is gonna look back ...
+ 1 for the Photon.

Thanks for the replies. I think she will enjoy it. I will activate it and put all her apps on there, so on Christmas, she can just play with it, and not have to worry about updating a bunch of apps. I will wrap it, and then just call it, she will be surprised.
Thanks for the comments.

It came today, resisting the urge to activate it and play around with it and give to her today, but, I know how she is, she would probably prefer to wait.

I actually started to do this. Lol But, her Evo was making her mad, and she had a really bad day at work, so I had her open it last night. She was happy and she loves it! I bought her 4 or 5 cases I'm saving for Christmas, she wanted one last night, I told her wait for this weekend we can go look at some. She will be surprised.
From playing around with it last night, it seems like a amazing phone, very fast, responsive, and I get a strong 3g signal in my house, something my S2 doesn't get.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!

After 1 day of use my wife just loves this phone. I do admit I love it myself, I almost bought one before Sprint announced the S2.
When my wife calls me on her MoPho, she uses speaker phone while driving and I couldn't even tell. It literally sounded like she was right beside me, I'm sure the 3 speakers make a world of difference especially when one is for noise cancellation.
She is getting excellent battery life, she didn't have to charge it one time at work, and we just plugged it in now before bed, not because it was needed, but because we always charge our phones at night.
So much better than the Evo which was great when it first came out.
Only knock I have is the screen is a little washed out, especially compared to my S2, but on par with other phones in the market.
I'm shocked I don't hate Motto Blur like I thought I would, and it would be nice to have some quick settings in the pull down notifications and other small things. I highly recommend this phone. I also bought her a nice case at the mall she is in love with, she will be even happier on Christmas when she sees the other 4 cases I got her.

glad she likes it. any learning curve issues for her? it is a good phone!

Sweet! this is a nice xmas story before xmas lol..
Congrats!

I did the same thing for my wife... I rooted, unlocked, and put a custom rom on it first... but she loves the phone... she had a motorola cliq 2 before and actually loved that one, but we switched to sprint.

No. She has adjusted well. I played with the phone for several hours while she went to sleep and went over all the things that were a little different than her Evo. She still loves it, especially hiw fast the apps d/l and how smooth it runs.

she'll probably miss sense...ive used the og evo and evo 3d now the photon...the pros of the photon is the call quality...the earpiece is so much better than the 3vo...another thing is the speaker...ringtones and notifications are nice and loud...don't pay too much attention to the signal bars cause each manufacturer is different...what you wanna do is check the db reading of the signal...i am getting almost the same db reading as my 3vo but seems like the photon holds onto the signal better...

Fellow photon users need an honest opinion....please

So im currently useing the phonton... an i love it, but the truth is im bored with it. I appreaciate all the work the devs do out there an by nomeans am i tryin to rush them. Im 2 days away from my 30 day return window an im gettin antsy an kinda thinkin of swappin for a nexus.... whata you guys think. Should i suck it up an wait for the photon to become a beast or swap for the nexus an flash away.... honest opinions would be great an appreaciated. Thanks
Sent from my PhonyDroid
I wouldn't recommend exchanging it the nexus has a single core no sd card less and slower ram no international capabilities not as hi res screen just to list a couple of reasonto stay
I own a Nexus S too. And I'd say that it's a better device overall even with its single core. What keeps me away from it is exactly your reason of moving away from your Photon - boredom. Have had it for over 6 months. It's old generation hardware already. Wouldn't you rather wait for the Nexus Prime?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
If you trade in at least swap for a newer device that is closer in specs. Have you considered the EVO 3D or Epic Touch 4G? You could easily swap for another 30 days and then again if you wanted the Photon back or another phone. This would give you a month or so to play around.
It boil down to what you want
if your a flash o holic and want to really go to town...why not get a used unlocked GSM development phone put in a prepay sim as a 2nt phone
I would go with the evo 3d if anything. The nexus has been plagued with radio issues. Or just get your upgrade back and wait it out. I used to be a flash a holic as well but I have slowed down a bunch over the years and find myself sticking to roms that are snappy and well build like cm7 or synergy.
Do what you like, I personally would have probably stayed with the evo 3d if the reception and call quality wasn't so poor. No point in a super phone if I roam all the time and drop calls.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the opinions. Im stayin with the photon. Biggest reason ill be stayin is no sd card on the nexus. Thanks guys

IMO, I would stay away from Samsung. My last Samsung phone was total crap.
I tend to prefer HTC and LG phones. In my past and more recently, HTC and LG have had great support for their phones when I contacted the corporate office.
I am loving my photon and I loved my Motorola flip phone back in the old days (the one with one line display that was red and the phone was very bulky).
I am also not the type of person to root my phone. I place more importance on a working reliable phone then my ability to root and flash new roms. From my understanding, Samsung allows rooting and custom roms more so then Motorola does. I also do not root because I do not want to void my warranty ... I'm too busy with work and school to try and resuscitate my bricked phone. I also do not have $600 laying around to replace my photon if it's dead. I'm happy with changing my wallpaper when I'm in the mood. Also, the photon is the best android phone I've had (had the HTC Eris, craptacular Samsung moment, HTC evo shift, and now the Motorola photon).
Having said all that, I find the photon meets my needs but you will have to figure out what is more important to you.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I am a flashaholic as well but my main reasons for flashing were to find optimal battery life, and an overall snappy phone. Once I installed decks rom on my EVO I never flashes another rom. The photon has everything I was trying to achieve in the EVO....so I've really had no urge to flash but I know once we get some good roms going, we will be flashaholics again...lol
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
same here. i found myself flashin daily to try everything on my evo. reason i did it is bc i wanted a fast and amazing phone. with the flashing, i got tired of always building up the phone again and such. i told myself that the next phone ill get, ill just root it and stick with stock other then maybe the kernel.
been using the mopho and havent had the urge to flash yet. sure undervolting would be nice, but i used setcpu the other day and had the screen off setting at 216/312 and when it was too low to keep pandora from not skippin when screen off. so i dont think id need any more under volting.
i use just juice defender and i get about 16 hours of medium/heavy use till she beeps at me (phone calls, lots of texting, and web browser)
i think this phone has excellent audio and sound. and i havent had the mute phone calls other then day 1. on performance mode and latest updates work well for me. I normally reboot my phone after 3 to 4 days just bc electronics tend to like it. did the same with my evo.
honestly, i dont see any other phone out there that could offer more. a world wide phone like this one. use a phone for what its built for, to stay connected to the world.
if you have the urge to flash, id buy one seperate just for the heck of it to flash and pimp out. im super happy with the mopho so far. love having the best signal around the office compared to everyone else.
Ditto to lroy's statement above.

Wait for the Photon to become a beast? Really? How? It is what it is and will be. As for the Nexus, why would you take a step backwards? Just because you can? There is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch coming out in two weeks. You could take the Photon back, use an old phone for 2 weeks and get the Sammy. Then after a couple of weeks you can take that back and get the iPhone5.
If you are looking for enough people to say "yea do it" go ahead.

[Q] Taking it back??

Who's taking the Photon back when the GSII comes in a week? Im taking it back because there are too many dumb things happening with this phone, the reboots and such. Plus there isn't too much going on with the Dev side either.
Why do people keep spamming the board with threads that already exist... I just don't understand.
And for the record, i've had my Mopho rooted and unlocked since the first week with yayrom installed (ive owned it for a little over a month). I havn't had any problems... The same can be said for countless other. The dev community is fine. You dont need countless bugged roms, just a few quality ones from quality developers. We have that. Adopt patience, it's a virtue. And well, if you dont have any, have fun with your sg2. We could use less user spam anyway.

Mines never rebooted once in the week I've had it. Today we have a further 2 roms available in development, things seem to be picking up. Besides I cannot take mine back as it would be a hefy price from the UK to the States, not that I want to anyways, love this phone

I was thinking about it but after taking a look at the Samsung infuse at an att store I changed my mind. 800 x 460 screen resolution on a 4.54 inch screen is fail.
I agree with i made a video discussing the build quality samsung makes all there phone plastic that feels really cheap. I had the infuse and charge and it feels real cheap motorola just on build quality is amazing prime example test out the epic 4g and then a droid 3 its a major difference. The photon is a beast and people just go along with reviews from people like phonedog that test out phones and there not actual using them as there personal phone. The epic touch is basically a infuse with a few changes the photon is so different and i agree i would rather have a couple stable roms then a bunch of unstable ones my take it from me because i would listen to those people and go out and buy phone after phone listen to them talking about this is the best when it wasnt. Now i know whats good and whats garbage. On the photon really all u need is it rooted changed to launcher pro and setcpu and its amazing

The CDMA radio in the Photon is reason enough to hang on to it, i can make phone calls in places i never could before with my Evo 4G and my Evo Shift.
The other day my phone was sitting side by side with a Verizon Thunderbolt, the T-bolt didn't have service and my Photon was roaming on Verizon with 3 bars.
I also get full service at work (on sprints network) where i only had one to two bars with my Evo.
Wanna hear something funny. The radios on this device rock for me. I was in a hospital waiting room the other day while a family member was having surgery and I had to provide a wifi hotspot for my brother and my uncle who were using T-Mobile and AT&T. Ain't that the ****!

That's kinda funny.

Epic Touch vs. Photon

Last night my wife got an Epic Touch. Nice phone. But I can confirm what people have been saying about the radios. The reception on the Photon was consistently 6 to 8 dB stronger on the Photon. I downloaded the same app with both and the Photon 40 percent faster. Both phones were in the same place. Also, there are a couple of "no Sprint zones " where I'd always drop calls with my old Epic. The Photon always holds the call in that area. I know people have claimed many times that the Photon radios are better and here is a real world test that proves it. Im glad I stayed with the Photon.

you gotta love it when you can use a phone as a phone and make and hold calls.
I was very seriously considering swapping my photon for the ET4G... i mean REALLY considering it.. I loved the Epic.. it would only stand to reason that it successor would be just as bad ass right ??
Then i remember the GPS problems, the bluetooth headaches, the lack of support/updates (from samsung/sprint).. it took lots of modding and just the right ROM to make the phone a pleasure to use.. IThen I grabbed my photon and realized how good I really have it.
This thing just works. I installed SPB shell 3D, rooted it and am loving the experience. Can't wait for CM7.. that'll make the experience w/ the photon INCREDIBLE..

I own both phones and love both of them. =] The epic touch for its screen (way better then I thought it was gonna be), light weight, still pic cam, and no lag. The photon for its radio, build quality, and speakers. Both phones are great and you can't go wrong with which ever one you pick. ^^ Sprint to me is the top dog right now with high end 4g phones. Lets just hope they improve their network this coming October.

I enjoy my Photon way more than my Epic, I just think Motorola's framework is a lot more cleaner than Samsung's. One of the things that annoyed me the most about the Epic is I couldnt disable the sound of when their is a network drop/reconnect. So I would constantly hear it while listening to music going in and out of subways. With the Photon, it's just silent and there is audio interruption going on.
Also, the little things like the orientation animation is nice. Samsung's screens are of course great, but I'm glad I have a higher res screen on the Photon. The icons on the Epic Touch look huge with the lower res, but that of course is a personal preference thing. Also not having my phone be a useless brick that can only use wifi when traveling internationally is great, the world phone option is a huge plus for me.

Even though Samsung doesn't push updates much, the development section is so active that most issues will be cleared out. Also cuz international version has been out a while, most issues must've been ironed out by now

Have had both and like the Epic Touch way better. For one thing I can hear someone when a call comes in. While the Photon had very strong signals and great sound, even with the MR it still suffered from software issues. I know everyone said to keep exchanging until you get one that works but that is not too appealing to me. I just want to get a phone and go. With the ET it has worked great from day one with no issues at all.
To be honest there are some faults that only a tech geek would nit pick about. Most people I know never seem troubled by some of the issues that posters rant and rave about. People complained about the Photon screen, really? I had to go into our tech department and use their electron microscope to see what they were talking about.
I would have to say that both phones are about equal. You can't go wrong with either one. It all comes down to which one you prefer. If you are happy with the one you purchased then that's all that really matters.
The name is kind of catchy also "MOPHO". I thought about getting the Epic Touch too, but I think there are too many things that the MOPHO has the the touch does not.. Kickstand and webtop mostly.. I just wish there was more developer interest.
i agree with the comment about having a grudge with samsung. after owning a moment i'll never own a sammy phone again. just got my photon last night and the sales person was trying to push a samsung on me. i was take your sammy and shove it lady give me the photon!

Is it too late to join the 3d party?

Hey guys, I know people usually hate these kinds of threads, but I've been a NS4G user for a while, and an Evo 4g user before that. My family is joining my Sprint plan and I'm thinking of giving my NS4G to the sister and getting a new phone. I like the idea of getting the 3d, but i am worried that it might be getting close to being outdated seeing as how it was released in June. That is pushing me towards the E4GT, but I would much rather have HTC's build quality and Sense over Touchwiz any day. So what do you guys think? Is it too late to get an Evo 3d on contract? Would you guys buy an Evo 3d again today if given the opportunity?

I love my 3D but it has been a very buggy phone. This is my 3rd E3D and if they would let me switch phones I would. I need to take this one back aswell it keeps freezing even with stock. I have to keep hitting my power button to turn the screen off then it works again some times for 5mins and some times 2weeks.

I love my evo 3d. Never had a problem and rooted it the very first day I got it. It's the best phone i've owned to date. Future phones will probably improve battery life, screen, and be lte compatible. I don't think you need more than dual cores, I think this phone will be competitive for quite a while. This just my personal opinion of course....

Haven't really had any issues with my 3D besides a really small dead pixel. You really shouldn't go off of what people tell you though because everyone has their own preferences. Take a look through the Dev. forum and check out the roms that the 3D has right now. It is a little behind on the dev side given we don't have CM yet but it all depends on what types of roms you like to run or if you are planning to root.
I was tempted to jump to the ET4G like many others but after seeing some make the jump then coming back to the 3D I decided against it. Just remember Samsung has a history of delaying software updates.

This has been my experience.
The only suggestion I have is what I've been telling everyone who asks. Since everyone is going to LTE, only get a LTE phone. Since Sprint's LTE has not started yet, amd will be rolled out starting late next year into 2013 and they are not dropping WiMax, I don't anticipate needing a Sprint LTE phone till Mid-late 2013. Meaning if you get a EVO 3D (the best Sprint Android phone IMO) through this summer, you will not be missing out on any speed things. Phone tech always is changing, but EVO 3D should get ICS sometime next year and be current enough for 1-1 1/2 years more.

I moved from AMOLED (Legend) to SLCD Evo 3D and I don't regret. Black is not so black as it was on amoled, but all other colors are better.
The only problem I've had was a busted antenna, but swapped that phone out and it's been all good since
The EVO 3D is a superb phone. Build quality is unmatched, as you're well aware as a longtime HTC owner. The only thing i wish they'd done differently is put an AMOLED screen on it, because the screen on this phone drains the battery faster than an AMOLED screen would.
GOT IT!
I picked it up today and I have been very pleased so far. Thanks guys for all of your input. I can't wait to get this thing unlocked and rooted(preferably not through HTC's unlocker(hboot 1.50)) in the next few days to see what this baby can do!
I got mine yesterday or the day before (nightshift messes up my brain!)
Anyway, I got it as a replacement for the Epic 4G..
I worked for Sprint in the past & have had nearly every Android that is worth having..
But most recently, I've had the EVO 4G & the Epic 4G, I usually have one for a few months and then want to go back to the other. I had this lated Epic off of a Craiglist trade (traded my white EVO 4G, straight trade... my last 3-4 of them have been Craigslist).
Anyway, like I said, this was a replacement, but this EVO 3D came from Sprint.. I took my Craigslist Epic into the store the other day because I was having data & GPS issues (since the 2.3 update) like the Galaxy series is known for & wanted to have another Epic (refurb or not). This was my first time going to the Sprint store for repairs (not any store that knows I used to work for Sprint, since it's in TX & I'm from FL), and they offered me a replacement right away.. EVO 4G, EVO 3D, EVO Shift, Galaxy Nexus (had that one the day it came out so I had the slow downloads, but don't like non-expandable storage).. I was blown away the system offered me a EVO 3D, so yeah, I jumped on that.......
I love my EVO 3D. I had been whining recently about needing a dual core, even wanted to go to the next iPhone whenever it hits sprint (4G or LTE compatible), but now I'll be sticking with this phone because the dual core really is superb. I mean ya, maybe I'd like a Galaxy S II better since it has better optics for the camera, but I've already had too much fun with the 3D novelty.
Plus, it's an EVO with a camera button, I LOOOOVE that. It's also the nicest build quality of any phone I've had. Oh, and it has Gorilla Glass... I hate screen protectors.
I'm also satisfied that I don't need to use APP 2 SD for a while since it has plenty of space compared to the Epic.
Not sure about the battery life yet, but this is the one phone I'll finally buy a Seidio battery for if need be, since it's worth it.
It actually doesn't have Gorilla Glass (the corning one). It only has HTC's Gorilla glass equivalent, so god knows how good it actually is.
Wow, good to know... I swear it says Gorilla Glass somewhere official though. Of course it's been out so long I know it's already been discussed LOL
Here's the most official I can find for now, straight from Corning

I've grown into my 3D. I received it as a replacement for my Evo 4G, which was having GPS reboot issues. At first, I didn't like it. It felt laggy, and didn't seem like much of an upgrade to the 4G. Now, when I use my wife's Evo 4G, that phone feels "held back", for lack of a better term. Although, I do not use the HTC sense launcher. It has nice eye candy, but the software isn't optimized, so it doesn't run very well. I like the sense apps, just not their launcher. I do prefer the size ratio of the 4G, compared to the 3D. And the 3D runs games like a champ, compared to the choppiness you will see on the 4G.
I'd still prefer the Epic Touch 4G, as that screen trumps the 3D's screen any day of the week.
I had been using LauncherPro, but every few hours I would get hit with the "use Sense or LauncherPro" defaults question... like ?! I already answered this question (it wasn't going back home from somewhere I hadn't set the answer to yet), so I went back to Sense, oh well. I'm happy with a folder instead of more icons I suppose.

This phone is a beast...definity meets my needs!

I know that there are probably other threads just like mine but I just had to get this off my chest.....for everyone that's disrespecting this phone and saying its a slouch, slow etc.
Some of you may know me from selling/trading phones over in the marketplace. I've had every high end phone on Sprint, some phones I've owned twice or even three times. Nevertheless, I got rid of them because I just didn't like the phone or wanted something else.
Well, I got me another Photon and I come to find that I really like this phone. True it has some issues that's in my opinion is very minor. Those issues consist of the small amount of laginess when unlocking the phone and for some reason when ever I'm typing the vibration of the key press just stops. Then it starts back after I stop typing again...I don't know what's up with that...but those are the only two issues I have with this phone.
Now as far as the good, the reception is out of this world. I get excellent service and bars where I got no or little service on both my NS4G and E4GT. The only phone that came close is my iP4s. I went to the mall here where I live and while the wife and kids were doing some shopping, I decided to pull out the Photon and surf the web. I was expecting that the data would be slow to non existence. But to my surprise, data was working and fast too. Again, this wouldn't have never happened on my NS4G or ET4G. The speaker on the photon is a beast as well. It definitely blows the NS4G out of the water. The E4GT has a good speaker too but begins to crackle at a certain volume.
Not to mention all the accessories that's available for the photo. I'm currently in the market for lap dock
If I'm just blabbing, I apologize. I'm just giving this device some love. I'm already talking my co-worker into getting an Electrify on US Cellular.

I have my gripes with the touch screen, but this is the best PHONE on Sprint. Best reception and sound quality that money can buy.

On a side not, I just tried Google Hangout with my cousin. And wow.. what a nice thing to use.
I'm glad I switched back to Android from the iPoop.

Yeah you're definitely all over the marketplace thats for sure lol. I never thought you'd be back to the photon. I too have used all of sprint's phones except the iPhone and Photon imo is the best Android device they've had so far. Honestly, I believe EVERY problem with device lies within the software I.e blur etc. Hardware is flawless ...

I agree on all counts as well. The phone is awesome. And also agree that if Moto unlocked the bootloader without losing 4G then we can get rid of the blur stuff and really have a outstanding phone.
I'm loving my accessories.
TS
