[Q] ICS Passion v7 - "Media" process killing battery - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The android.media.process is taking a large chunk of my battery. I haven't seen this process on any of the previous ICS passion roms. Can anybody tell me why this is constantly running?
Here's a couple screen shots. I would ask the dev but I'm a couple posts away from being able to do so. Hopefully he'll read this and explain why it would be different than the previous versions..

Try clearing data for all those services mentioned.
It's weird, I've seen this problem a lot in the thread, but I don't have it.
What are you syncing, by the way? Which do you have enabled?

Only thing synced is my gmail. I make sure to go through all of the settings and uncheck anything that would run in the background. I'll update after I clear out my cache.

Alright, hm.. could be a faulty app, too.
Let me know how it goes.

Cleared cache from recovery, set permissions.. etc. Its still running. It must be something different with this rom... I may just return to 6.5. I had no problems with it and I have gotten used to no GPS.

I'm having this issue with V7 too. I read online that it could be a corrupt media file causing it. Apparently, you need to move your media off you SD card to see if it helps.
Haven't tried it yet

You can figure out what media it is scanning and then in that file open it up and put a .nomedia file in it and when your media scanner is engaged, it will skip over that particular file.
Be careful with .nomedia files b/c if you put them in say DCIM or you album art, take a wild guess what you'll see in your media player or your gallery.
.nomedias work as long as your make sure you know where they go. Wouldn't make sense to put on right in the root of your SD now would it? But find the file it keeps scanning and put one in there.

In my experience just let media process run until it eventually stops 10-15 min.. then reboot. Should stop excessive CPU usage after a couple reboots and data built.
I also .nomedia titanium backup and CWM.
Otherwise you may have a corrupt file causing this. I thought so at 1st but maybe its something with this ROM. I formatted my SDcard and media process still loose at boot. So just give time for it to settle and it usually goes away.

.nomedia file

.nomedia keeps generating itself in the root of my SD card .. out of nowhere . It wipes out all my music and pics and stuff .. i delete , reboot , and its cool for a while , but then it pops back up inevitably .
this just recently started . Anyone know of a fix?
That's odd ... that is the purpose of the .nomedia file ... to tell the OS not to look for photos etc there. My guess is that some app is generating it. Can you detect a pattern to when it appears?
I have exactly the same problem. Did you install cover art downloader or PowerAmp? I think that the problem may be for one of this applications or a service of them, and if you have one of this app, It would be suspicious.
PD: sorry about my english, i'm spanish and this is the only post that I found with the same problem. I would like to find a solution for both.
Thanks.
I used to have cover art downloader but not anymore . And I have never used poweramp .. so I dunno , a strange problem

This broke my theory. But this morning I did something... (I don't know what), and the file and will not come back.
if tomorrow, if the file is still missing, I will tell you everything I did, step by step.
Sometimes the file appears, one minute after remove it, and other takes hours.
The problem is more important than it seems (at least for me) because if the file exists, the phone don't sounds when somebody call me, or the alarm either.
Yeah my pictures get permanently wiped . My music always comes back

Something similar happens to me, and:
- Copy the entire sdcard to pc (include hidden files and folders)
- Fomat the sdcard
- Copy the data back to the sdcard
- Run the app "rescan media" or "scanmedia", which are free in market.
This not solve the problem with the .nomedia, but maybe solve the problem with the videos and other stuff.
This is insane. . I just Odined and its still happening, which makes me believe its an sd card problem. Ill inspect that tomorrow

i Odined again ... and formatted my sd card ... and the problem continued .. until i realized when i signed in with my Google account , there were two or three apps that were getting restored .... i deleted those apps that were automatically getting restored . then rebooted several times , then snapped several pictures and rebooted some more ... so far the .nomedia file has not reappeared , Im about to put some apps and my music back on my sd card and see what happens .
Interesting ... what apps were restored already?
Some animated weather app. Msnbc .. and I forgot the others

Well, I'm glad you figured it out.

I don't know what I did, but the file is missing since sunday morning.
If I did something, it makes no sense. I did what I explained in my previous post, but didn't work, then uninstalled an application of wallpapers (I forget the name ).... also install "ES Task Manager", "ES Security Manager" (Both from the developer EStrongs Inc.) and .... the file disappeared.
I do not know what happened, but I think it was anything I did. The file is alive.. elsewhere.
The trouble is that we will not know it was.

Losing Apps At Restart

Has anyone experienced apps that become uninstalled because you restarted the phone? It has happened twice and both times the phone had been running for several days. If I restart it right away to try and duplicate it, it does not seem to happen. Doesn't seem to be related to apps that get installed into phone memory versus internal. Last time it happened there were about 20-30 apps that were uninstalled. They still have shortcuts on the desktop but would just pop up this app is not installed when I would go to use it. Very annoying to have to re-install that many apps! Thanks for any help!
I haven't noticed that but did notice some apps i freeze in titanium seem to unfreeze on reboot. Maybe the issues are related to the stock ROM somehow.
Random Uninstalled apps would be a lot more annoying though.
Thanks for the reply! It is very annoying. Would fast boot have anything to do with it?
I've also noticed a few apps uninstalling themselves.

Did it happen right after a restart?
Well, I think it is fixed but not sure which change fixed it. I uninstalled appBrain, app2SD and turned off fast boot. None of these were issues with the OG EVO. I wonder if app2SD was causing issues now that there is phone storage and external SD?
Well, it did it again. This is getting old fast. No one else has this issue? Guess it's time for a factory reset.
I've had this issue with the 3D and hope not to have it with this phone. Another restart usually fixed it.

I had that issue all the time with my Samsung Galaxy E4GT. I haven't seen that going on with my Evo 4G LTE.. Hope I don't start having it..
OK, so it will definitely fix itself if I reboot again. It's almost like if you try to use something too soon after a reboot it gets hosed. I have no idea what that is, but if I try to use the phone too soon after reboot it seems to have the issue. And the issue stays even if I wait a long time so it's not that it hasn't had enough time to read everything. Very annoying! Original EVO did not have this issue for me.
Well, this time restarting did not fix it. I restarted many times and shutdown. All the apps this is happening to are now shown as com.appname.xxxxx So com.pandora.android or com.google.earth as examples. So the system still has them in the apps downloaded under settings but if you run them it says they are not installed. Will try hard reset and if that doesn't work, back to the Sprint store it will go.
Did you try turning off fast boot? The speed of the fast boot, even during reboot, makes me think that its not a full cold reboot. The way that fast boot works is that it puts the phone in to a low power sleep mode, which some apps have problems with.
Are you sure the app is completely gone? What happens if you go in to the app management menu when the app appears to be missing from the app drawer? I have a problem like this occasionally where stuff disappears from the app drawer for ADW EX, and a restart of the launcher did the trick, which is why a reboot helps for sense, because that does force the launcher to rescan for apps present to repopulate the app drawer.

Are that apps that are disappearing happened to be moved to Phone Storage instead of Internal Storage?
You have to have the card GET formatted by the phone & move the apps using the built-in method .vs Apps2SD.
I think it's more of an ICS thing, I had the same thing happen to music & photos until I did the above.

Yes, fast boot is off. App still appears in the apps under settings as downloaded buy now either has a com. in front or an org. and then the app name etc... I can uninstall it at that point. The shortcut on the desktop just doesn't work and it is missing from the app area of the phone.

Yes, I believe all the apps this is happening with are in phone storage but it does not happen to all apps in phone storage. Many of them are fine.

I did try using only the built-in method the last two times and thought it had fixed the issue. Obviously it did not. I will try formatting the card with the phone before I do the hard reset. The apps are not stored on the card right? Only in internal or phone storage? Or can apps install themselves to the external? I don't see a way to move them. I am not having any issues with photos, music, etc.. on the external.
Can I just copy everything off the card, format it, and then copy it back on? Or should I only copy music, photos, etc.. and not system folders?
Thanks to all you guys for all the help!

OK, now I have erased all data on the card using the phone itself but I do not see anything to format it. Is erasing and preparing all I need to do?

copied files to sd card and phone apps are hanging

Hi folks,
has any of you seen this?
I have the atrix 4g, I have a 16GB sd card, I copied some files (like 2GB in mp3) to the sd card, I safely removed the device from my computer, then from the atrix status bar I changed the usb mode to none and it mounted the card just fine, but now when I try to open apps like gallery, music player, files, or even winamp, they will just hang and I have to force close application.
Also, it drying out the battery very quickly, is like is hanging in trying to read the files.
What can I do? I don't want to have to reset the phone.
Any ideas?
Hi, ok I found the process taking all the cpu, is android.process.media, I dont know what is trying to do, how can I tell why is hanging?
I cant stop it either, is it important?
Thanks

I've had this problem twice. I think that the Atrix's software cant handle so much new media at one time. The first time it happened I ended up preforming a factory reset, which fixed everything (Make sure to back up first!) The second time was when I was adding lots of music again, and since I'm doing this constantly, I ended up unlocking and flashing to CM7.
hmmm yes this ain't my first time with this problem either and i had to reset as well. but that's too much work, i have a mod for the lapdock and having to reinstall is a real pain. but anyway I've manage to kill the media process with the kill -9 command using the terminal emulator as root and t this released everything else, gallery and music are working fine. i still don't know what will affect if i don't let the process start again, i might look for an app that would help me prevent it from starting , but if it causes any pain i will try maybe another flash like you said .
thanks
ok, I might have found another solution, may be too prompt but wanted to share.
I kept searching on google and found more options, since killing the media process wasnt very useful, eventually it would start again and hang everything. Basically, go to Settings, Applications, manage applications, all, tab on media storage and then Clear Data, go back tab media share and clear data, then reboot the phone.
After reboot the media process will start again and will scan all drives, I can see it taking something between 20 and 40%, the common at 25%, is way below the 60% that it was using before, so I gave it a second chance and let it running for a while.
Indeed, after some minutes it finished the rescan and cpu went back to 0% on the media process and I was able to open gallery, music, etc.
So, I kept all my files in the sd card, didnt have to factiry reset and the media process went back to normal.
Hope this is permanent, and hope it works to anyone else with the same.
cheers

[Q] mediaserver battery drain

Hi all,
I'm having some trouble with battery drainage. Main cause is mediaserver, I have searched, and (for other devices) they suggested moving my pictures and videos off the sdcard. I have no additional media files since before this mediaserver issue began so I don't know what the problem is.
As you can see from the image, battery drains normally, then the sudden drop.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Are there any other people with the same issue?
One thing I did was flashing latest firmware from sammobile. Was fine for the first few days but suddenly this happened..
I used to have this problem. I think it might have been caused by a corrupt media file, which made the media scanner get "stuck" on that file. I deleted everything in my /sdcard/ folder which solved the issue. I'm not 100% sure, that this was the solution though, since I did a few factory resets at the same time, but the problem is gone and so is the excessive battery drain.

when you say deleted everything, literally the entire contents of the sd card? on my nexus there is no external one so that means deleting all the notification/gallery/system files too??
yep wanna ask the same thing. I haven't actually had any media I've added myself, which probably means it may be a file from one of the apps.
Will I have to go through all of them and delete? The mediaserver seem okay now but I'm worried about when it might go off again..

Had the same problem yesterday.. no new apps or anything. Looks like I solved it by emptying my photo roll. Suspecting it could be a video I recently filmed. The thumbnail was all black, so guessing that was the culprit.
Edit: And just after typing this I noticed Media was up at 20% usage again.
The problem started happening again. It's really hard to pinpoint this problem. For me, it only happens charging, but not when the phone is unplugged. I hope this is a rom issue which gets resolved in the next version.

Are u using viber or something similar? I never saw mediaserver in battery hog list unless i started using viber
I've never even heard of Viber. I might have a different issue though since I don't have a constant wake lock. Whenever my phone started acting up, I found a lot of repeating logcat messages related to the media scanner. It might be something completely different though.

maybe a fix
i had the same problem after wipe clean and fresh install of JB.
I dont know exactly what solved it but here is what i did:
1. disable media store
2. clear media store data
2.5 executed playerpro application while media store is disabled
3. deleted all .nomedia files i could find
4. deleted the Player Pro album art directory content.
5. deleted all image caches of all applications i could find
6. enabled media store
Google doesn't really care?

[Q] "Media" app draining my battery?

Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been going between 2 ROMs recently (Tron 2.1 and PAC-Man 23.0). For both of them, it is showing that the "Media" app is using a larger percentage of my battery (around 18%). I'm just not sure what this app is, or how to disable or remove it.
When I click on the app from the Battery details, "Force Stop" and "Report" are disabled buttons. Down below, it shows the included packages being "Downloads", "Media Storage", "Download Manager", "DRM Protected Content". I haven't been downloading anything, nor adding songs or movies, so I'm not sure what this "app" is spending its cycles doing.
Thanks!
I guess that it would be a better idea to report this incident to the ROM developer..
I have the same problem sometimes. After a google search I found that basically, your phone is searching for all the media on your internal and external storage. What causes the wake lock is that it is searching for or has found a file that is corrupt. It basically gets stuck on that file for awhile.
I had the wake lock for a couple days then it just went away.

That is really interesting! Using a previous ROM, I do have a few corrupted images from a camera-app-gone-haywire. I'll have to clean those out (which I should have done anyway), and see if that helps.
Great idea!
No problem! I should go through and clean my SD card out, but I am too lazy and don't have the time to spend on it. I just deal with it because I usually have a charger nearby most of the time.

Check to make sure the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM folder isnt overloaded with 2GB of images. Dont use the stock camera app regardless what ROM you are on. It accesses the stock Gallery app which in turns eventually creates thousands and thousands of "thumbnail" images. More like small pics at about 400x300 resolution. It JAMS up android.process.media .. hell.. it would make my phone hot because sometimes it ran straight for 24 minutes killing cpu.. deleted all the files in there and stopped using the stock app, no more problem.

So what do we do when we have been using the stock gallery and camera app? Can I delete the .thumbnails folder? What kind of camera and gallery app do you recommend? I have both stock samsung and stock android camera that I use everyday...
I have been using my phone (unrooted stock) for quite some time now and only recently did the media act up on me and killing the battery. I have rooted and install custom rom and reformatted my sdcard.
It'll now i kinda check the battery more frequently.

Just following up (I asked the original question). What I've found is that between various ROMs, I have two images folders on my sdcard. Mostly, I just went through and deleted a few invalid images (I think my Tron 2.0 ROM used to take corrupt images, but no longer). I cleaned out many many images I no longer needed as well.
Also, not sure if this is related: I uninstalled and reinstalled Google+ (which has an image auto-backup feature). I had been restoring it from a backup, and I think it got corrupted along the way. It was no longer automatically backing up images, for example.
Since then, I've been in much better shape, and I haven't noticed the Media process taking as much battery.
