Root: PC or Mac - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Just got my Tablet. Want to root but PC is down, I have a Mac..is the procedure using Mac as easy or as good as the PC version? Any difference?
Can someone point me to the Mac instructions? Thanks.

It's all straightforward and laid out. Take a look at the Android Development forum to see what else you may enjoy?

Any difference if use Mac vs PC method?

Ok just did it with Mac. I see something called SU Binary Updater, do I need to update that, is it related to root or something unsafe?

That's an update to the SuperUser "app." Go ahead and update it.

I think both are very similar.

Dunno if they are different, but the Mac-version worked without hiccups for me

Will the Mac technique of rooting prevent the 1.41 update?

I currently don't have access to the internet, is there any other way I can root my hero?
Not really, though by posting, surely you could get Internet access to download the needed files for universal root of the 2.1 adb method?
No I'm using my mobile

OK. I wonder if you could get universal androot apk, and run that.
But tbh I think it's safer to be able to use a PC when rooting, as if anything goes wrong, you would be stuffed

[Q] Upgrade to 2.1 from linux

I wonder how I can upgrade my x10 mini pro to android 2.1 from my linux pc. I don't have any windows box at all. I'm looking for somthing like htc-flasher, but for x10.

Can you elaborate on how you did this? Because it wasn't possbile for me in VirtualBox, due to the fact that it didn't keep the USB connection.
I’m guessing he is using the non-free version of virualbox with usb support. I don't have a windows cd, so that’s no option.
Maybe the java tool posted in this thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826455 can be used on linux after some modifications?
Yes, that was a must.
To keep the USB connection you have to add it as a filter in the settings tab:
Without starting the virtual machine, connect the phone and go to settings > usb, select to add a filter and select the phone. I think that should work for PC Companion. If you plan to update with seus the usb device is a different one, so you should put the phone in flash mode and add the filter for the corresponding device. After the update, the name of the devices will change again, so you need to add new filters again.
Btw, I wasn't able to root through Virtualbox using Superoneclickroot but I think it was because I didn't stop PC Companion properly...

Yes, you also need usb support.
If you don't have any windows at all maybe you could try flashtools in wine...

I think it has some very primitive support, but certainly I wouldn't go that way...

This morning I had acces to a computer with windows, and I tried to root using Superoneclickroot and I ended up having the same problem as with Virtualbox (the program was running but it was stuck at a loop), but this time I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del > Manage tasks > Finish PcComapnion, and it automatically rooted. I think If I had done the same before It would have worked...
rooting the phone with linux works like a charm... you need the sdk from h t t p : / / developer.android.com/sdk/index.html (sorry i can't post correct links)... i haven't tried flashing it yet because i'm waiting for the official update in switzerland

exactly... as soon as i have 2.1 i'll post what method i used
This is driving me crazy. I am also trying to install the 2.1 update with virtual box (non-free 3.2.10) on Mini Pro.
I am unable to get a proper USB connection to the device although it shows in the filters settings when I boot the VM it remains greyed out.
Can anybody else report success?
Sony Ericsson deserve a big slap for this.
Update: Sorry to solve my own problem, but isn't this so often the way after you ask for help:
I had to add my user to the vboxusers group, after which the usb connection worked fine.

adb works great in Linux, both for 1.6 and 2.1, but the problem is there are no flashing tools available to update.
As for rooting the phone, the program I used in 2.1 (superoneclick) seems to be a gui for some batch process in adb, hence maybe reproducing all this steps in adbshell (pushing the necesasary files, running rageagaintshecage, getting the mountpath...) one could root the phone the same way...
It looks like the superoneclick author will add linux support in the next release.

to bad the USBFlash.dll is from sony ericsson. we'll never know what the library does.
but i just played through the game of updating using a virtualbox windows machine... works like a charm. wrote down the simple steps to get it done here: h t t p : / / munz.li/?p=110

Good, I hadn't seen that before. And well, looks like it's already supported. I just installed it,
you have to run the .exe file through mono. I tried and looks like working correctly, it detects the phone... but mine is already rooted so I'm not sure...

Snowball Mod/Root Issue

So I have been trying to install the snowball mod on my root. The problem is that no matter what I do each computer I plug the nook into it automatically installs the drivers so I cannot load the usbdrivers. I have tried on 3 different computers. 2 win 7 (64bit) and one Vista (32bit). One of the 7's was a fresh install with no updates. Do I need to use a specific version of windows or something? Is there any way to do this under Linux?
Have you read the sticky by lavero.burgos on NT Tips and Tricks? It got a FAQ and step by step guide link there to make things work under driver issue.

Snowball-mod comes with all the scripts also available in BASH for easy use in Linux and other GNU operating systems.
You just have to get the drivers to work, but after that it's just "sh ./snowball.sh" instead of "snowball.bat".
this may be the answer I'm looking for
I simply run snowball.sh instead of .bat if I already have a working, rooted NT, is that correct?
It simply adds/fixes all the stuff zergy doesn't, correct?

Is there any way to root xt910 without PC?

My Razr USB connector malfunctioned
it can charge the battery only
is there any way to root without a pc?
NO! Else you have enough skill to give the commands diretcly from terminal emulator and also execute the exploit from the internal/external storage. But it's definately not sure that this will work.
Give your device to repair if you are sure that you connector doesn't work. Otherwise you could try another cable, maybe your cable is broken. Or your PC isn*t configured right. Check these things and try again.

i use the same cable to flash the razr from arctic 3.0 bk to 2.3.6 eu .
it works fine...
Maybe there is something wrong with the used drivers on your PC. Uninstall all of them then reinstall Moto-helper and try again to root your device.

[Q] Where is android_winusb.inf?

Hi
I'm feeling like a complete idiot here but I cannot find the android drivers, specifically; android_winusb.inf which I need to modify to root my tablet.
I get to here 'C:\Program Files\Android\Android Studio' and there's no SDK tools folder, no extras folder, nothing; just 'bin', 'gradle', 'lib', 'licence' and 'plugins'. I can run SDK via Android Studio and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the USB driver but I've no idea where it is.
Am I running a newer version of Studio? Has implementation of SDK changed? This is on Win8 64 bit.
Any help much appreciated
@Badmiker,
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.
On my PC, android_winusb.inf is here:
Code:
[path]\android-sdk-windows\sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
...[path] being the folder on my hard drive in which I've placed my android-sdk-windows folder.
Thanks
I eventually found it down in Users\Blah\Appdata\Local\Android...
I've modified the USB driver to include the devices codes but it's not showing up in 'Fastboot devices' though it is in 'adb devices'
Can I root from here?

Z4root works, just don't mess with the CPU. I did and it's been buggy. I'm trying to figure it out. I'm also looking for a recovery/ROM that works but no luck on that. When you root it, download superSU and busybox if you can get the pro versions.

Here's the Z4Root thread.
Thanks for the help.
I've run z4, without any success, and pushed via adb. All proceed fine but 'root checker' and Titanium say that neither tablet is rooted...
Very frustrating!
Any suggestions on what else I can do would be great....
