I am curious about this, do I need the HD Station, or can I just connect the phone directly to the TV with the HDMI cable?
Directly

You can connect directly. Sadly I ruined mine, got the mud out but don't get any display. Dropped it in the mud at a funeral, what a ****ed up day. ..

You can connect directly, and it will mirror, but it won't do webtop unless you root and do the webtop over HDMI hack. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199443
But you don't need to do that if you just want to mirror your phones display.

Yeah, just to mirror the display. I'd buy the HD Station or Webtop if I wanted to do more.

I have a Standard HDMI to Mini/Micro HDMI (which ever version it is, it fits the Photon 4G Perfectly) and I was hoping that when I connected it up, I'd have the option to go into Webtop mode.
Unfortunately this was not the case. The only options were Gallery, Music and Screen Sharing.
So my question is... Does anyone know how we can force the Photon 4G to allow Webtop over a standard cable or are we forced into paying Motorola for one of their accessories to open up this functionality?

there is a thread in the dev section explaining how to do it. i'll link you once i edit this post.
edit:
Here you go follow these instructions I can verify it works.
Ok so I've got my Photon plugged into my TV via an HDMI cable and I want to know how I can make the phone think that it's plugged into a Dock and open the Webtop app so I can use it. I've been without a laptop for almost 2 weeks now and it's killing me! LOL!
SO.........does anybody know how to do this or if it's even possible?
If the "Firefox Browser" App is actually built into the Dock itself then I guess I'm screwed unless someone has an answer.
Thank you all in advance for any help. I greatly appreciate it!

Exactly what he^^ said.

Hello, i wish to enable promiscuous mode in my atrix 4g, but found out the chipset does not allow it.
The idea is to be able to crack easy WEP networks on the road.
Alternatively i was thinking on getting a cheap netbook and hook up a more powerfull USB wifi adapter like the 2 watt alfa AWUS036NH , that supports upgradable antennas as well, and was tested working in monitor / injection mode over linux.
but got me thinking, why spend money on a netbook if maybe i can hook up the wifi usb adapter into the atrix 4g hd multimedia dock, and then use aircrack with that wifi usb tested device, instead of the onboard wifi.
In know is possible to compile aircrack into android, but the problem always relies in incompatible monitor mode onboard wifi addapters.
With this USB addapter this issue would be solved.
Another issue is power, this 2w adapter needs it. I'm pretty sure the hd dock has a powered USB hub, so that would not be an issue. I would later hock up the dock into the car battery, or maybe use like a 12v 10a/h external battery for portability.
Does anyone has done anything like this before?
i already have a rooted phone and a debian img installed.
thanks
I'm also interested in it...
Seems that some tablet (like the flytouch 3) have a native support to some tipe you USB WiFi adapters
By the way this tablet have a similar "integrated USB WiFi adapter" (RT3070 or RTL8191SU) so it have the drivers already installed and this Is the reason why it support the adapter, I think...
Different usage scenario
Does anybody know if establishing wifi/lan using usb / multimedia dock is possible?
I'm not asking for aircrack or anything like that. I use an atrix in a multimedia dock (hooked up to stereo system) as my alarm clock, tuned to an internet radio station. My wifi on this atrix has recently burned out and I'd like to get a data connection again (external wifi/lan whatever) without needing to get a data plan (or activated sim at all).
Anybody ever try this or get it working somehow? A lot of atrixes get retired due to bad wifi, but if a cheap wifi dongle and bring it back to life, it can still serve many uses!!
Thanks!

The op poses the same question as I do. It does not answer the question. Over a year has past with people's WiFi going out, new approaches or insight may have been gained in the community since then.
Since there was never an answer, a bump isn't exactly inappropriate on something that may have evolved.

Hi guys!
Is there a way to force the RAZR to lapdock mode without the lapdock?
My screen is broken and i need to get some data from my device before i send it to service, because they always do total wipe of the devices, its policy..
If i use the HDMI-cable from the RAZR to a screen i only get the Motorola logo. My tought was that it is possible to emulate a lapdock via the USB port when i have it plugged in my computer.
Is that possible?

That would only work if my phone is rooted, and if i can access the phone. Right?
The main problem here is that i dont have a screen. So i can not install an use nebtop unless i can force the phone into HDMI-duplicated screen-mode with som nice usb-hack.
Any other suggestions, of is it something with nebtop i have missed?
Regards
Which Android version is installed? The .211 ICS doesn't require any special adapters or docks to go into webtop mode. I got the cheapest thing for Gingerbread, the "travel adapter" that looks like a big usb/hdmi passthrough. Want one cheap?
You could always just find a store with a demo unit and bring a USB stick to save files to.

My suggestion would be to dump the webtop idea and use ADB. Either enter a shell and copy the entire contents of the flash to a memory card, or use adb to pull it to your computer over usb. If you really must use webtop mode, go plug it into a lapdock in a verizon store that has one on display, and copy everything to a flash drive.
You can use the webtop mode with just hdmi, but you have to be able to tap on the webtop mode popup i believe.
There's probably a more sophisticated way of doing this, but i'm not entirely sure what that might be, good luck with it.

Beartard is right. If you have ICS, all you need is a HDMI cable. Connect the cable to your miniHDMI port and then to a monitor/tv. You should get a nice tabletUI webtop.
On a side note, your best bet to get your info back would be to use a lapdock100 or 500. Go to your verizon store and ask to test one. The reason being, if your screen is completely busted, you won't be able to use your phone as the input device it needs to navigate webtop.
A) does our phone have to ability to be a usb host?
B) If not, is it because of hardware limitations or software?
C) if software, how can we fix it?
I'd like to use a usb mic with my phone, but I'm not sure it will work/how to get it to work, so I thought I might ask the geniuses here
Thanks in advance
Probably works for storage devices if you use a powered hub and CM9 Rom, but I doubt it will work for audio.
Why in the world would you use a USB mic anyway?

my laptop webcam is horrible and before spending money on an hd webcam I'd try just using my phone

USB host won't allow you to use your phone as a webcam.
