I have a Standard HDMI to Mini/Micro HDMI (which ever version it is, it fits the Photon 4G Perfectly) and I was hoping that when I connected it up, I'd have the option to go into Webtop mode.
Unfortunately this was not the case. The only options were Gallery, Music and Screen Sharing.
So my question is... Does anyone know how we can force the Photon 4G to allow Webtop over a standard cable or are we forced into paying Motorola for one of their accessories to open up this functionality?

there is a thread in the dev section explaining how to do it. i'll link you once i edit this post.
edit:
Here you go follow these instructions I can verify it works.

I was just thinking, all that the lapdock is to the phone is an HDMI output and a USB input, so why does it trigger webtop, and could I trigger webtop the same way?
My initial thought is, it triggers it by something sent into the USB, is there any way anyone could identify what in particular so it might be mimicked?
I realize people have come up with software webtop without lapdock solutions, but I'd really rather just leave the software alone (harmless as the change may be..), I rather like it as it is (with launcher pro instead of default that is..)
So, what is the lapdock doing to key the atrix to go into webtop?
I did search for this, sorry if there's already a thread about it, I didn't find one..
Although I am not a hardware person and have limited experience with Linux, I am also interested in the answer to this question. I would have to assume that the Atrix recognizes the connection and sends a command to launch the appropriate software.
Once again...I am not really in any position to contribute much relevant information.
Just to throw out some other ideas that rattled around in my head for someone more familiar with this device...
There is a communication that comes from displays where they identify themselves and their modes for whatever device that connects to them- some pieces of this information could be key.
Beyond that, any particular piece of information the USB device identifies itself with similarly- a model or serial number the internal usb hub claims itself to be to the system, I know these are standard passive details these devices share with anything connecting to them.
In the identification side, I wonder if the files modified by the software webtop hack might lend details about what is precisely telling them to go into webtop..
If it's keyed off of some particular serial number or model information from the USB, I figure I could buy a cheap configurable USB diag board and flash it to mimic that info..
I sincerely doubt there's anything superbly intelligent in the lapdock where it does some non-standard communication as a handshake, I would think it has to be based on the standard passive device information every USB hub or HDMI connection shares..
edit:
Unless there's an extra device on the USB hub internally like a smartcard or flash chip with a key the atrix checks for..
I have webtop enabled without a dock, and webtop pops up when I plug just the HDMI cable in. I imagine it is just detecting the external display, and doesn't have anything to do with USB.
It should not be complicated as you you think. It's rather trigerred by some specific resistor on the pins 4&5 of micro USB connector

You arent running stock software then. It detects it yes depending on what software you are running but the docks sends a signal to the atrix to turn on webtop on stock.
Not sure that it uses resistors, because when software hack was not available, bunch of people tried to do it with resistors however nobody got it to work. The best way would be to take apart multimedia dock and look at circuitry . Most likely it has a microchip sending some kind of ID. The problem is you need a special device to sniff usb communication between devices. If somebody has a device like that it should not be that hard to sniff it and program separate microchip to send it to usb.

Sorry, I can never tell the difference, when things are technical and require some development understanding which place to put it. If a mod could move this post I would appreciate it then.

Its sensing an external diplay. The hdmi cable does a handshake upon connection of the cable. At that point, the software handles what happens. Webtop senses usb as well (like the car dock does), but the hack removes that check. Thats how hdmi triggers webtop.

About two and a half minutes in to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5vgYiF3Udw.
He is specifically talking about the desk dock there but seems to imply they use "whisper technology" to communicate for all docks.
That's not from Motorola and that guy made that up....
At least that's my take....

There's no rfid ... the devs would have figured that out by now. Its most likely just by device id. Same reason the cable shouldn't be plugged into a computer. The device id is not in the standards compliance for usb. (E.g. not flash drove, hard disk, human interface device)

Hi all,
So I'm curious is there is a program that will work as a webtop for my Atrix. I have a Windows 7 PC and don't want to spring for the webtop hardware, but would love to be able to plug my phone into my laptop and use it like the webtop. Does such a thing exist? I've been through the webtop search results and haven't seen anything like it.
Thanks!
The webtop hardware is just a keyboard and monitor that you plug into your phone to make it look like a laptop. It runs Firefox off your phone so you can get the "full" web experience without lugging around a full sized laptop. So no, its not a software thing you can do. And why would you? if you have a laptop right there use that to browse the web.

True, but the phone features on the computer are kind of handy. It may not be the most practical thing to have, but if its out there, that would be nifty!
+1 for first response though

the entire webtop OS is contained within your phone. the only way to enable it is to connect an external HDMI display to it, and no, your laptop is not an external HDMI display. you MUST use a monitor, TV or other device made to display HDMI input signals.

Awesome, thank you!
Ok so I've got my Photon plugged into my TV via an HDMI cable and I want to know how I can make the phone think that it's plugged into a Dock and open the Webtop app so I can use it. I've been without a laptop for almost 2 weeks now and it's killing me! LOL!
SO.........does anybody know how to do this or if it's even possible?
If the "Firefox Browser" App is actually built into the Dock itself then I guess I'm screwed unless someone has an answer.
Thank you all in advance for any help. I greatly appreciate it!

Hi guys!
Is there a way to force the RAZR to lapdock mode without the lapdock?
My screen is broken and i need to get some data from my device before i send it to service, because they always do total wipe of the devices, its policy..
If i use the HDMI-cable from the RAZR to a screen i only get the Motorola logo. My tought was that it is possible to emulate a lapdock via the USB port when i have it plugged in my computer.
Is that possible?

That would only work if my phone is rooted, and if i can access the phone. Right?
The main problem here is that i dont have a screen. So i can not install an use nebtop unless i can force the phone into HDMI-duplicated screen-mode with som nice usb-hack.
Any other suggestions, of is it something with nebtop i have missed?
Regards
Which Android version is installed? The .211 ICS doesn't require any special adapters or docks to go into webtop mode. I got the cheapest thing for Gingerbread, the "travel adapter" that looks like a big usb/hdmi passthrough. Want one cheap?
You could always just find a store with a demo unit and bring a USB stick to save files to.
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk
My suggestion would be to dump the webtop idea and use ADB. Either enter a shell and copy the entire contents of the flash to a memory card, or use adb to pull it to your computer over usb. If you really must use webtop mode, go plug it into a lapdock in a verizon store that has one on display, and copy everything to a flash drive.
You can use the webtop mode with just hdmi, but you have to be able to tap on the webtop mode popup i believe.
There's probably a more sophisticated way of doing this, but i'm not entirely sure what that might be, good luck with it.

Beartard is right. If you have ICS, all you need is a HDMI cable. Connect the cable to your miniHDMI port and then to a monitor/tv. You should get a nice tabletUI webtop.
On a side note, your best bet to get your info back would be to use a lapdock100 or 500. Go to your verizon store and ask to test one. The reason being, if your screen is completely busted, you won't be able to use your phone as the input device it needs to navigate webtop.
Hey, recently bought a Motorola laptop-dock (originally for the atrix, but works with photon).
1.) I am on a US cellular Electrify and was wondering if I can use this: this with the laptop dock.
2.) What's a decent blur'd rom to use with unbuntop? Can I use a de-blur'd rom and just install a webtop apk or something...?
3.) Can I use cm9 at all with the tegra 2 ubuntop?
Big thanks to anyone that can answer some questions

I'm using the atrix dock with my photon 4g. I assume you know you have to flip the connectors. Guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223032
tip: no need to unroute all the wires like the OP of that post did, you can flip the micro usb as is, the micro hdmi can be flipped to but doesnt line up with the usb. For that just widen the hdmi opening towards the top with a knife till both line up. Also make sure to put a little bit of folded tissue between the two connectors and the retaining clip to make sure they dont get pushed back whil plugging the phone in.
As for rom, you need to use a blur'd rom. I suggest peetr's its the best in terms of compatibility with the atrix dock IMO.
Flash ubuntop as per loki's instructions.
Note: please do take care to see if electrify has some special instructions.

Kurt,
I've been looking for quick concise reply like this lately myself. Just tried peetr's rom on my Electrify, and it's great with the hdmi dock. Thanks for your post, even though it wasn't aimed at me.
Glad I could help. The real thanks goes to the awesome dev who worked on ubuntop.. Loki
Thank you very much kurt.
So just to make sure - Peetr's rom + Tegra 2 Ubuntop + Motorola lapdock SHOULD work properly correct?
Any huge bugs when plugged into the laptop dock?

Nope, that should do it.. Dont forget you have to reverse the connectors on the dock for it to work.
The only big bug which i face is that sometimes when it connects to the dock, it doesnt sense the dock keyboard and instead the phone goes to touchpad mode. I have a feeling its because the contact between the connectors and the phones is improper sometimes.

Do you personally have it setup? Wanna take me some personal close ups? The ones on the guide thread aren't the best :/

Aah well I'm not sure that would help because last night I tried to modify the dock so I can attach the phone when it's in its case (Otterbox commuter). The results aren't pretty but it worked.
Anyway pics are attached if you still wanna have a look..
I don't the if you can make it out but the micro isb was just taken out and flipped as is. For the micro hdmi, I widened the opening towards the top so it lines up with the use and stuffed some tissue below it to keep it stable
