Hey, recently bought a Motorola laptop-dock (originally for the atrix, but works with photon).
1.) I am on a US cellular Electrify and was wondering if I can use this: this with the laptop dock.
2.) What's a decent blur'd rom to use with unbuntop? Can I use a de-blur'd rom and just install a webtop apk or something...?
3.) Can I use cm9 at all with the tegra 2 ubuntop?
Big thanks to anyone that can answer some questions

I'm using the atrix dock with my photon 4g. I assume you know you have to flip the connectors. Guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223032
tip: no need to unroute all the wires like the OP of that post did, you can flip the micro usb as is, the micro hdmi can be flipped to but doesnt line up with the usb. For that just widen the hdmi opening towards the top with a knife till both line up. Also make sure to put a little bit of folded tissue between the two connectors and the retaining clip to make sure they dont get pushed back whil plugging the phone in.
As for rom, you need to use a blur'd rom. I suggest peetr's its the best in terms of compatibility with the atrix dock IMO.
Flash ubuntop as per loki's instructions.
Note: please do take care to see if electrify has some special instructions.

only moto blur roms work with webtop. so you cannot use any other roms if you want webtop.

Kurt,
I've been looking for quick concise reply like this lately myself. Just tried peetr's rom on my Electrify, and it's great with the hdmi dock. Thanks for your post, even though it wasn't aimed at me.
Glad I could help. The real thanks goes to the awesome dev who worked on ubuntop.. Loki
Thank you very much kurt.
So just to make sure - Peetr's rom + Tegra 2 Ubuntop + Motorola lapdock SHOULD work properly correct?
Any huge bugs when plugged into the laptop dock?

Nope, that should do it.. Dont forget you have to reverse the connectors on the dock for it to work.
The only big bug which i face is that sometimes when it connects to the dock, it doesnt sense the dock keyboard and instead the phone goes to touchpad mode. I have a feeling its because the contact between the connectors and the phones is improper sometimes.

Do you personally have it setup? Wanna take me some personal close ups? The ones on the guide thread aren't the best :/

Aah well I'm not sure that would help because last night I tried to modify the dock so I can attach the phone when it's in its case (Otterbox commuter). The results aren't pretty but it worked.
Anyway pics are attached if you still wanna have a look..
I don't the if you can make it out but the micro isb was just taken out and flipped as is. For the micro hdmi, I widened the opening towards the top so it lines up with the use and stuffed some tissue below it to keep it stable

on another phone especially the galaxy sII? wondering it would on another device.
It has a proprietary connector so no.
the mhl dongle? it can be had, but i don't it is available commercially in the us. happen to know if any non motorola phones with hdmi out has tried webtop?
http://motorola-global-eng.custhelp.com/rnt/rnw/img/enduser/oly_supdock_front_m.jpg
You have to connect both connectors at the same time. And if I read correctly, one of the two is a proprietary connector by Motorola.
no. i have the atrix. it's just micro hdmi and micro usb. the galaxy has mhl connection which can be used for hdmi out i believe. it's just hard getting mhl because hardly anything is using it right now.
Samsung provides an microUSB to HDMI cable. But then again, you can't connect both at the same time.
And I think the Atrix has some specific drivers (and a lot of modified Android OS files) too. While they can be dumped, you'd need to adapt them on a GSII ROM. And since it's quite useless, nobody will dive into this huge reverse engineering work.
Definately a no-go.
well some of the atrix webtop files have been pulled and that is part of what i was wondering if anybody has tried to do a quick zip with them and seen what happens. i'm pretty sure it isn't that simple because as you've said, probably custom files from motorola. to some peeps it might be worth it to be able to use webttop/lapdock but who knows how deep you gotta dig in. i don't have the skills for it and am not requesting it either. some phones have been able to boot into other os'es and such so this task isn't unsurmountable.
While it isn't surmontable, it would be pretty hard (not only there's some files related to the webtop (libs and such), but there's also a completely changed Android framework). So it would be a pain in the ass to adapt this with Samsung files.
And since there maximum 5 guys in the world who have both a motorola webtop and a Galaxy S II, there's not a lot of chances to have it working.
And again, there are not the right connectors. Even if the software is adapted, there's still the hardware issue.
Well thanks for all the answers. I was more curious about if other android users were curious about webtop and galaxy sii was a good forum to ask because it's a powerful phone and popular. I got the lapdock and it's pretty good for light duty utilization. And easier on the eyes. Thanks for your answers again.
I voided my warranty.
I have a Standard HDMI to Mini/Micro HDMI (which ever version it is, it fits the Photon 4G Perfectly) and I was hoping that when I connected it up, I'd have the option to go into Webtop mode.
Unfortunately this was not the case. The only options were Gallery, Music and Screen Sharing.
So my question is... Does anyone know how we can force the Photon 4G to allow Webtop over a standard cable or are we forced into paying Motorola for one of their accessories to open up this functionality?

there is a thread in the dev section explaining how to do it. i'll link you once i edit this post.
edit:
Here you go follow these instructions I can verify it works.
Ok so I've got my Photon plugged into my TV via an HDMI cable and I want to know how I can make the phone think that it's plugged into a Dock and open the Webtop app so I can use it. I've been without a laptop for almost 2 weeks now and it's killing me! LOL!
SO.........does anybody know how to do this or if it's even possible?
If the "Firefox Browser" App is actually built into the Dock itself then I guess I'm screwed unless someone has an answer.
Thank you all in advance for any help. I greatly appreciate it!

I've just read that i can use Ubuntu on the Atrix (I'm running turls v8), but I am a little confused as to how I need to connect the phone to the laptop. Whats the minimum type of dock can I get away with?

Thanks. I forgot to clarify. II bought the phone on ebay and I font have any type of dock at all. Thanks.
The phone doesn't come with it, you buy the lapdock separately.
CM7 and CM9 do not support webtop though. So the best you'll get on that rom right now is HDMI landscape mirroring of the phone display on the screen.

Thansk. maybe I need to clarify more.
I only have an Atrix...no DOCK of any sort. I'm not worried about Webtop because i use CM9.
However, I knwo i can use the phone with ubuntu and i want to play around with that.
I know there are a few different types of Docks out there (Standard, HD, Laptop etc), so i need to know which one I can get away with without spending more than i need to! I don't want to have to fork out for the Lapdock if the standrd one will do.
So, whats the cheapest Dock I can get away with?

they all serve different purposes.
it seems you think all the docks are interchangeable.
and you can only run Ubuntu on the atrix/lapdock combination, I believe.
You can run Ubuntu (or webtop in this context, which is Ubutnu 9.10) with the lapdock and the HD Multimedia dock. You can also run webtop simply with the supplied HDMI cable (which I'm guessing you didn't get either) without any dock but your ROM must support webtop over HDMI. Webtop is only available with Blur roms, not CM7/9
If you are talking about the recent Canonical announcement about Ubuntu on Android, that is simply and updated webtop and made to run on any Android, not just Moto. It is not available to the general public.
There is a another way to run Ubuntu that I've heard works with CM7/9, but it is the type that uses VNC as a viewer and on the phone, not using one of the docks mentioned. I know nothing else about that setup.
Hi guys!
Is there a way to force the RAZR to lapdock mode without the lapdock?
My screen is broken and i need to get some data from my device before i send it to service, because they always do total wipe of the devices, its policy..
If i use the HDMI-cable from the RAZR to a screen i only get the Motorola logo. My tought was that it is possible to emulate a lapdock via the USB port when i have it plugged in my computer.
Is that possible?

That would only work if my phone is rooted, and if i can access the phone. Right?
The main problem here is that i dont have a screen. So i can not install an use nebtop unless i can force the phone into HDMI-duplicated screen-mode with som nice usb-hack.
Any other suggestions, of is it something with nebtop i have missed?
Regards
Which Android version is installed? The .211 ICS doesn't require any special adapters or docks to go into webtop mode. I got the cheapest thing for Gingerbread, the "travel adapter" that looks like a big usb/hdmi passthrough. Want one cheap?
You could always just find a store with a demo unit and bring a USB stick to save files to.

My suggestion would be to dump the webtop idea and use ADB. Either enter a shell and copy the entire contents of the flash to a memory card, or use adb to pull it to your computer over usb. If you really must use webtop mode, go plug it into a lapdock in a verizon store that has one on display, and copy everything to a flash drive.
You can use the webtop mode with just hdmi, but you have to be able to tap on the webtop mode popup i believe.
There's probably a more sophisticated way of doing this, but i'm not entirely sure what that might be, good luck with it.

Beartard is right. If you have ICS, all you need is a HDMI cable. Connect the cable to your miniHDMI port and then to a monitor/tv. You should get a nice tabletUI webtop.
On a side note, your best bet to get your info back would be to use a lapdock100 or 500. Go to your verizon store and ask to test one. The reason being, if your screen is completely busted, you won't be able to use your phone as the input device it needs to navigate webtop.
