Addfree Android - Nook Color Themes and Apps

Would anyone recommend this app? Reviews complain about continuous updates, maybe malware, anybody tried it before?
-XDA Premium on CM7 Nook Color

It updates alot be cause the host file is always adding more blocked websites. I use it on all my devices. Reboot after you do it. No more ads.

This app is one of the reasons to root your phone. Not malware

I use it on every one of my devices. The updates are to stay on top of the ever growing list of ad servers.

Yeah you can rest assured, this thing is top, not flop.

Thanks all!

Well after installing, updating, and rebooting I tested angry birds and there is still adds... is it supposed to work for everything or just certain things?
-XDA Premium on CM7 Nook Color

Another good option is Adaway. I like it because it has a few more options compared to the last time I was using adfree..
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.adaway

I use AdAway because it blOcks more ads it seems.

As it turns out... I forgot about it for a while and then just checked it out again, and its working fine, definitely a recomended app I'd say. Thanks again for the insight!

This is an essential app for me, I update it manually and have had no problems. Just ad free apps.

Does this just get rid of ads in browsers/game banners, or will it get rid of the Words with Friends ad after each move, and the like?

They get rid of most ads. It depends on what ad server the app uses. It just blocks them using the host file, like you can do on a desktop computer.

Yep it a good app,its so good I have added it to my rom plus Airblocker,it stops push adds.

XDA App not working on Nook

I spent some time looking through forums, if I missed the answer to my question you can throw me in the fire.
Running nightlie #95 and dal oc [email protected] 1200 mhz. 7.03 stable all the way up to this nightlie I haven't been able to run the XDA on the nook. It loads up and I can make a few selections than it fc's.
Is this because I changed my build.prop for netflix? Any ideas?

NOT TRUE!
The XDA app (free version) looks for an IMEI number which the Nook does not have. DizzyDen has put together an app to patch your framework.jar file to give your Nook a fake IMEI based off your Serial number so apps like the XDA app, Swype, HBO GO, and the Xfinity app which look for IMEI numbers will work.
Is using Tapatalk just the easier idea?
Guys i hate to break it to all of you but the XDA APP has work on cm7 since day 1. No mods no tapatalk pro no nothing. install it from the market and run what ya brung. i have never had a problem with it once.
EDIT: This is without any hacking of the IMEI at all.
I will have to try out the imei file. Sick of seeing "process com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity"
Thanks for the ideas

In my experience the XDA never worked right. On both NookieFroyo and on CM7 I could use it to browse but once I tried to login it would force close. Works great on my Eris though!
I wonder what is the advantage of the app is anyway? I just use Opera and go to the website. I'm doing it right now.
again i beg to differ I have never once had an issue with the XDA app from the day i got my nook. Never hacked anything. It has always worked perfectly every single time. Not to say other people my not have issues, but both my Nook and My Wife's nook has never had an issue.
edit: Question or clarification perhaps. Are you guys getting errors just trying to load the app or when making a reply?
The error it's typically upon logging in.

When you say it worked from day one, which version of the app and CM7 are you referring to? And what are you on now?
I have a recent SD install CM7/n87 and a fresh download of the XDA free app, and it FCs everytime when you try to do anything relating to log in. Can you confirm what you're running, may have done special to get it to work?

fuul, what you describe is exactly the problem I am having
I owe this thread an apology. I had never actually tried to login on the XDA app. I just browsed forums.
Note However: Now that i have logged into the app. I can still browse fine, the only time i'm getting a FC is when i try to reply to a thread.
Again i apologize for not testing further before spouting off at the mouth. Yes there is in fact a problem, i just don't experience "as bad" of a problem as some of the rest of you.
I gotta say that its kind of rediculous this app has problems running on the nook correctly since xda seems to be the center of Nook Color hacking universe.
Then again the app is pointless when I can just use my browser. In fact I'm now getting rid of any and all apps that can be replaced with my browser. What's the point?
just get the xda premium app, that does not require an imei number or do the framework hack.

Anytime I can use an app made for a particular forum I use that over the browser anyday. Having multiple bookmarks saved for each forum thread and for each forum starts to clutter up the rest of my non forum bookmarks. An app like XDA lets you save favorites within the app itself, therefor freeing up adding 20 some odd extra bookmarks of threads I like to keep up on.
The site provides that same functionality. You can subscribe to threads eliminating the need to fill your browser with extra bookmarks.
When I open my browser and click on my xda bookmark I'm automatically signed in and ready to pickup on all the threads I have participated in or have interest in. I just don't see the need for a xda app. There has to be a reason for the app. There must be something it does for the user the website will not. WHY!?!?!?!? LOL

Lower bandwidth for one? Noticed that with the stock browser and dolphin HD, there are times when browsing the XDA site directly it has issues rendering certain pages. Could be luck of the draw and a misbehaving ad banner for all I know, or a bad internet connection from my side, no idea. But overall the XDA app feels like it's lower bandwidth.
Since I haven't been able to get the logged in version of the free XDA app to work, I couldn't tell you beyond just this if it's worthwhile.

Try rebooting and taking a look at your /system/etc/hosts file, you should be able to see if adfree has modified it or not. Some apps have started getting ads from their own servers so there's no easy way to block them
Just hit download and install hosts. Installing it doesn't do anything, you have to refresh the hosts.

I've had an issue keeping ads away as well. I do think the deevelopers are getting a bit smarter about how they serve the ads.
Here is an old thread on the subject
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664532
It hasn't been updated in quite some time but it might help.
im just absolutely lost how/what is causing the notification popup add that i get which is for "win an ipad2..."
Itll randomly happen and not with a program up and running less its in the background. Its not a txt msg one but actual notification that sends me to a website. I scaned with lookout and all is fine. Also read up on the notification adds and thought it might be the airpush crap but the airpush defender app didn't find any apps using it when i installed it so im at a complete loss now as to why this is happening.

I've never seen the ad you're talking about but I wonder if Sprint is sending it to you. I used to get a bunch of text ads from Sprint until I called them up and told them not to send me anything anymore. You might just be able to call them and have them stop it.
You can never really tell what apps to trust and what not to, I guess.
Take Dolphin for instance, love the browser, but take a look at this.

Not directly "ad" related, but you get what I'm saying.

Ad free

This thing has never actually worked for me, every app I use still has ads even after I registered and updated my ad free. I reboot and super user grants ad free on the boot up but ads are still on all my apps.
Does this thing actually work or just blowing smoke

Used to work but not much anymore. The individual apps are using their own ad servers now. I find that Ad Away works a little better, give it a shot
It used to work awesomely but recently it blocks online ads only
Yeah i tried both but no luck LOL was trying to get ubersocial without ads but looks like they making you pay now

Try "adaway" it seems to work better in the US than the ol' adfree. (At least for me.)
I just noticed someone else posted this already above me; don't use both as that can cause neither to work (for whatever reason). Also, you CAN edit your hosts file manually and that -DOES- work. You can even look up custom mobile ad-free host files that you can work in there. Best of luck.

I'm still using an older version of what used to be ubersocial. Either I always was using a ROM w/ and ad list built in or had been running ad free and I have yet to see any ads. The one I'm currently running is Twitroid 6.03. I stuck with this free version off the market bc I was reading a lot of the reviews about the new updates and I just never bothered with the update. It still works fine and I use it daily...
If interested, I posted up the apk.

Honeycomb plagued by ads in notification

I'm losing my mind trying to track down the process causing repetitive ads in my notification tray. Things for new improved market and other randomness. Has any one had this issue and what is causing it? Only started after I updated to HC. Watched running process to monitor but no suspicious activity. Running stock non root.
Sent from my PG41200 using XDA App
Never heard of that before, but any app can post notifications. My guess is you have a bad ad supported application installed. Carefully check your apps. Uninstall any suspicious apps and check your results. When you find the culprit, give it a terrible review in the market and write the developer a nasty gram.
Is there a way to ID the process utilizing the notification tray?

I don't know of anyway that you can monitor which apps are sending notifications other that using the PC development environment which would be far more trouble to set up than just uninstalling apps one by one.

I remember reading somewhere else there are several apps known for such notification spam. "Music Junk" is one of them, don't remember the rest. I also remember reading that there is an app that lets you control all the permissions (including sending notifications) of most apps. Don't remember the name of that program though.
I would suggest removing most of the extra stuff that you have loaded, and then reinstalling them one by one allowing some time in between to check if you get spammed.
Let us know if you track it down, any info will helps others.
Lol congrats on having airpush infecting your system. try doing a
Code:
pskill | grep airpush
and see if anything comes up. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot. Not sure if busybox has pskill though...hmm, we shall find out!
I hat the same problem with a mp3 download app!Uninstalled it and it was gone.Nothing to do with the HC upgrade i think.

No, you're right. This has nothing to do with Honeycomb. It's an app that the OP installed as several posters have mentioned.
Yes, as Indirect said: this is called airpush.
Try this app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.brosmike.airpushdetector
OP, do you have screenshots? Maybe someone has the same app, and gets the same notifications that can help?
I hate random notifications too, especially the Glu games letting me know there are sales on crap I don't want.

The app that you're thinking of is called "Permissions" available in the Android market. I can't remember the app that checks just for the air stuff but I believe the logging test app (developed here at XDA) will find that. If you like it you can buy a license on the Android market to support the developer, full details in the thread just search XDA for it.

Are you rooted? If so download and install Adaway from the play store. What you are getting are called "push notifications", many free apps will start pushing them to your phone. Adaway will block those and in app ads as well. Just make sure to check it every so often for an update in app. Hope that helps.

Ad Away will get rid of banners in apps. Not too sure about the notifications. If it does, then cool. But also, you may want to try AirPush Detector. It will show you exactly which apps are giving you those apps if you want to delete the app that is causing them. If Ad Away doesnt work for those type of ads and you want to keep the apps that are doing it, you can also try Airblocker - Airpush Block. I have never tried it but it seems to do what you want.
