Assuming I had a factory Android ROM (never modified) and I wanted to root the phone, uninstall some of the bundled apps I don't want, then unroot the phone, will I still be able to perform normal factory over-the-air upgrades or will that fail because I have modified the original system a bit?
yeah u will have no prob unless u remove some system apps and i presume u want to remove some carrier bloatware, if so then u should have no problems.
Hit the thanks button if I have helped!!!

I want to do a factory reset/wipe since Ive been having issues since the update, plus it will allow me to get rid of a bunch of apps I dont use anymore.
I know Google backs up mail and contacts. What about phone settings? Apps would have to be redownloaded/installed from the market, which is no big deal. What about SMS? I also want to format my internal memory, so that stuff will get backed up manually by me. Is there an option to format this drive or should I just do it in Windows?
the best way to reset, is flash a new Stock rom to the phone. that is Called FRESH!! beside that, ordinary reset from phone menu only wipes the data, not the updates. updates stays!!
you say u want to avoid the updates, that is what I am guessing from your post.
so best to apply Stock Rom with Odin...read the bible got all the info you ever need!!
Nope, I want the update (why wouldnt I ?)
Think of it like wiping your hard drive and reinstalling Windows with all the updates.
Hi ... first time android user with a vibrant here. Been reading on rooting and stuff.. not really interested in flashing custom roms. I just want to remove the bloatware that came with my phone. My question is... When rooted... If i make a backup of the bloatware on my sd card and delete the ones located in the system app folder ... Would i still be able to recieve OTA updates or updates from the mini kies if I move them back to the system folder when the time comes for the update? Ive read that you need the bloatware in order for it to update .. which is stupid haha. If anyone can answer I would highly appreciate it. Thanks!
Just delete them, you don't even need to save them...
a OTA?
So far, there's a 2% chance of there being a official update from 2.2 to 2.3 from Samsung themselves for us, so... OTA is out of the question.
Flash a rom, get it over with and you'll make your self and your phone alot happier.
Removing the bloat won't stop an OTA or a Kies update.
You won't need to replace them - new versions will come with the newer ROM. Thus, you'll have to remove them again.

Root and install Bloater and add/remove whatever you want. No need to back anything up. OTA doesn't look for the apps on your phone.

Are you sure? I read on various forums from people who removed the bloat and updated to JI6, but resulted in a bricked phone. Would this happen for the future updates? To be on the safe side, should i reinstall the bloat with titanium
backup and unroot?
(Sorry if these are stupid questions but im kinda new to androids)
I want to remove a couple of system apps from the stock P7500 ROM (Samsung HUB and HUB widget) as they are constantly causing force closes.
I will root the device and remove the apps via Titanium Backup, but what is the best way to then unroot the device? Flashing the stock rom is not an option, as it would just replace the apps.
Would removing the superuser .apk and SU binary remove root?
I think it will work, but I also want confirmation. I have deleted su first and then superuser.apk, rebooted and the root was gone. But I don't know what happens if I factory reset it. Will the device be rooted again? Kind of stupid question, I know, but I'd like confirmation
Sent from the 10.1th galaxy...
I'm going to give it a go tonight when I get home from work.
Factory reset after removing the files shouldn't be a problem - If you have removed the root the apps won't come back after resetting.
So did removing the files definitely remove root?
un rooting current ROM
I actually had the same question for our Devs. I was wondering if it would be possible to create a update script to unroot any SGT ROM after you get it to just the way you like it.
I already have the update script to root any ROM from CWM so I'm guessing all I would need is one script that does to opposite. The primary reason being that there are a number of apps that do not work if your tab is rooted. So to get around this I wouldnt mind unrooting and then rooting again when I need to.
Ill take a look at this some more but I thought I would get some info on this before I started wasting time on it.
Hi all
I have had my Galaxy S II for about a year now, and i am thinking about rooting it and installing Cyanogenmod on it, but i need some info about the proccess: First of all: What happens when you root your phone? Is you data/apps deleted or is it safe?
Second: What about when i flash Cyanogenmod? Is my data/apps safe there or do i need to redownload the apps and backup my stuff?
Third: If i root my phone and do not flash a new ROM, will it be just as hard for me to update the firmware as on a jailbroken iOS device?
And lastly: I have heard about Titanium Backup, what does it backup? The OS, the apps and/or the data? These are the questions i need answered before starting the rooting proccess
Thanks in advance

The process is a little different depending on the device but basicly a super user binary and SU app are installed on your device, this will not (in most cases) effect your data or apps.
When you flash a new ROM like cyanogenmod you will loss your data and apps yes so you will need to redownload/reinstall them backing up using a app like titanium backup is recommended.
In most cases if you root your phone it will not be any harder to update the firmware however after the update you will loss root, and often the hacks used to install SU and a custom recovery get fixed in newer updates, so its normally recommend not to update through the official process but to flash a modified version of the update normally found in the XDA forum for the device, these modified versions will have super user etc preinstalled so they cant be lost during the update.
Titanium Backup backs up your apps and there data (so when you reinstalled them with Titanium Backup it will be just how you left it)

if your upgrading the same ROM to a newer version for example if you where on CM9 version 1.0 and updated to 1.1 you will likely not have to no, however the developer will post if the update requires a wipe, as some large updates do need a clean install.
If your going from one ROM to another than you will need to wipe yes

Hi
I am new to the Android operating system and therefore my question may be a stupid one.
I wanted to know if it's possible to create a custom ROM from an existing ROM, for example I rooted my phone and uninstalled a few system apps, now I wanna make it into a ROM so then i can flash it to the phone and even when someone will factory reset the phone it will still be without the system apps I uninstalled cause the ROM does not have these apps.
Thanks
