I struggled to install Android XRON version and TWRP unless I scour xda and YouTube. Anyway, I put it all together here. I hope it will help those who are starting up myself.

| Touchpad XRON Android CM7 Install for Newbies
| Install with the latest TWRP 2.0 Recovery!
| v2.0 by TopQuark 12/23/2011
+-------------------------------------------------------+
BACKGROUND:
-----------
XRON CM7 has its own tweaks so it is the best CM7 install right now. It includes some
bloatware though but those can be uninstalled later through Titanium Backup.
TWRP 2.0 is the latest Recovery Project with customizable touchscreen GUI! I will be
replacing ClockWork Recovery (CWM) with TWRP 2.0 during the install process.
INSTALL PREWARE:
----------------
Preware is akin to "Jailbreak" or "Unroot" and it is needed to sideload and install webOS
apps. But we'll need Preware to clean some of the files during the CM7 install after
CM7 installation.
1. Download webOS Quick Install:
http://www.filesonic.com/file/1411099974 or...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2774158/WebOSQuickInstall-4.3.1.jar
2. Store it in any folder you assign. You will get the file: WebOSQuickInstall-4.3.1.jar
3. In your Touchpad (or TP), go to "Just type..." in the main screen and type the following:
webos20090606
4. A prompt will ask you if you to switch on developer mode. Switch it on.
5. A developer mode passwork will be asked. Leave it blank and press 'continue'.
6. Plug-in USB cable. Do not click "USB Drive". Just click 'Close' when the Connected
prompt comes out.
7. Double click the file in your PC you downloaded "WebOSQuickInstall-4.3.1.jar".
8. Click the 'world' symbol on the right.
9. Under 'Applications' tab, look for the file named 'Preware'. Click on it, then click
'Install'. This will <10 secons to install.
10. Exit WebOS Quick Install.
11. Go you TP, under the Launcher -> Downloads, you will see the Penguin Icon named
'Preware'. That's it!
DOWNLOAD ACME INSTALLER AND CLOCKWORK RECOVERY:
-----------------------------------------------
The ACME installer is to install Clockwork Recovery. The Clockwork Recovery is to allow
installation of zip files that includes the ROM of your choice, updates, and TWRP that I
will explain later.
From rootzwiki.com website:
- ACME Installer - http://goo-inside.me/roms/cmtouchpad/alpha2/ACMEInstaller.zip
- Clockwork Recovery - http://mirror.dal.tdrevolution.net/kmobs/update-cwm_tenderloin-1012.zip
...or from here - http://goo-inside.me/roms/cmtouchpad/alpha1/update-cwm_tenderloin-1012.zip
DOWNLOAD MOBOOT:
----------------
Moboot is the ingenius program that allows multiple boot among webOS, Android CM7,
and Clockwork Recovery or TWRP.
- Moboot files are located here- http://code.google.com/p/moboot/downloads/list.
Download the latest. The latest file is 'moboot_0.3.5.zip' as of this writing.
DOWNLOAD XRON CM7:
------------------
As mentioned earlier, XRON CM7 is the tweaked version of CM7 Alpha. Download the latest
version from here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/Touchpad_Developers/Team_Xron/CM7base_XRONified/
Disregard 'ACMEInstallerMethod.zip' and files starting with "CM_7.1_XRONified...'. Those
are redundant. The latest file is 'XRONified_vB2.7_odexed.zip' as of this writing. It
contains less bloatware. File size is a lot smaller than previous versions! Good thing
about XRON is the google apps (gapps) are already included unlike in the raw CM7 install.
DOWNLOAD THE HP webOS SDK:
--------------------------
These files are needed to communicate with webOS during the install process. Go to this
site:
In item#4 of the website under 'Install the HP webOS SDK for Windows', download the file
corresponding to your PC - either 64 or 32 bit.
PREPARE THE DOWNLOADED FILES FOR TRANSFER:
------------------------------------------
1. Go to your TP and connect the USB connector. Tap on the "USB Drive" to connect
to the USB drive. At this point, you will see the familiar USB logo on screen.
2. Create 2 folders on your desktop PC named 'android' and 'cminstall' all in lowercase.
3. Extract the contents of the zipped files from ACMEInstaller.zip into the 'android'
folder. DO NOT transfer the zip files!
4. Transfer the following zipped files to the 'cminstall' folder (yes, leave these as .zip):
a. ClockWork Recovery (file is like 'update-cwm_tenderloin-1012.zip')
b. Moboot (file is like 'moboot_0.3.5.zip')
c. XRON CM7 - Rename the XRON file from 'XRONified_vB2.7_odexed.zip' to
'update-cm_xron.zip'.
Remember to keep the above 3 files intact with .zip extension.
5. Double click on the 'HP webOS SDK' program. The filename is similar to
'Palm_webOS_SDK-Win-2.1.0-519-x64.exe'. Run it -> click 'Next' -> 'Accept Terms of
License Agreement' -> click 'Next' -> select 'Custom' -> click 'Next' -> click 'Change'
button -> select the directory where you kept your 'android' folder. This can
typically be found in 'C:\Users\YourName\Desktop\android'. Then click 'Ok' -> click
'Next' -> click 'Install' -> click 'Finish'.
6. There is an extra folder created named 'Palm webOS SDK'. You can delete this. It is
not important.
7. Open the 'android' folder. Drag the 'ACMEInstaller' file to the 'bin' directory.
INSTALLING THE FILES TO YOUR HP TOUCHPAD:
-----------------------------------------
1. Open file explorer and go to 'HP TOUCHPAD' storage device. Double click it.
2. From your desktop, drag the 'cminstall' folder into the 'HP TOUCHPAD' storage device
at the root directory.
3. Once 'cminstall' folder was copied, eject the 'HP TOUCHPAD' storage, then shutdown
the TP by long pressing the power button and clicking 'Shutdown'.
4. Power-up your TP by pressing 'Power Button' and 'Volume Up' button at the same
time. A USB symbol will show in the screen.
5. Double click on the 'android' folder in your desktop, then, double click 'bin' folder.
6. While pressing the 'Shift' key, press the right mouse button then click on 'Open
command window here'.
7. In the command (cme.exe) window, type the following:
novacom boot mem:// <ACMEInstaller
8. A series of commands will show in your TP with a pair of penguins staring how
wonderful Linux is. This will take few minutes.
9. Your TP will reboot after that and it will ask you to select which OS to boot! Note
that you only have 5 seconds to select or it will run CyanogenMod. Press the 'volume
up' or 'volume down' buttons to make a selection, then 'center' button next to the USB
port to execute it.
10. That's it! Congratulations! You now have Android in your TP!
INSTALLING TEAM WIN RECOVERY PROJECT RECOVERY (also known as TWRP 2.0):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. After wondering around Android in your TP, download the following file from
http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/75:
update-twrp-tenderloin-2.0.0RC0-signed.zip
2. Copy this file inside the 'cminstall' folder of your TP. You can do this while
inside CM7 by pressing the dropdown curtain, select 'USB connected', then 'Turn on
USB storage' then 'Ok', while your USB plug is connected.
3. Go to 'HP TOUCHPAD' storage in your TP and double click 'cminstall' folder. At
this point you will notice that this directory is now empty.
4. Drag the file you downloaded above 'update-twrp-tenderloin-2.0.0RC0-signed.zip'
inside the 'cminstall' folder. There is no need to rename it.
5. Eject the 'HP TOUCHPAD' drive, then reboot by pressing the power button for few
seconds and select 'reboot'.
6. As soon as TP booted up, be quick to move the volume button (you have 5 seconds)
and select 'boot ClockworkMod'. Press center button to run the recovery.
7. Move the volume buttons to select 'install zip from sdcard'.
8. Select 'choose zip from sdcard'. Go to 'cminstall' and install the xxx.zip TWRP file
from there.
9. Select 'Go Back', then reboot system now. That's it! You now have TWRP and the
nice touch GUI interface. Well, it is not that nice yet but it is customizable so you
know what others will do with it.
REMOVING 'boot ClockworkMod' in the BOOT MENU:
----------------------------------------------
Since ClockwokMod is no longer needed, remove it from the boot menu. Here are the steps:
1. Reboot the TP. As soon as system reboots, be quick to select 'boot webOS'.
2. Go to 'Downloads' in TP Launcher and click 'Preware'.
3. If you have not run Preware before, it will ask you to read the change history and
just keep on clicking ok until you get to the program.
4. On the top right search button, type 'internalz' without the quotes.
5. Click 'Internalz Pro', then 'Install', then 'Install/Update Them'.
6. Click 'Ok' for Java Restart is Required, then 'Launch', then 'Continue' without having
to click on any sliders to off.
7. At this point the file and folder directory will show in your screen. Click the
'Internalz Pro' at the very top left of the screen, then click 'Preferences'.
8. Browse all the way to the bottom, then slide the 'Master mode' button to 'On'. Click
'Yes' to enable Master Mode.
9. Click the 'Internalz Pro' button again at the very top left of the screen, then 'Close'.
10. Go up the directory by clicking '..', then do it again. Click on directory 'boot'.
11. Look for the file that says 'uImage.ClockworkMod'. Click it. A menu will show, then
select 'Delete'. Click 'Yes' to confirm delete.
12. That's it! Reboot TP and you will no longer see 'boot ClockworkMod' again.
LOADING A NEW ROM IN TWRP:
--------------------------
The question is, if a new XRON ROM came out, how will I update to the new ROM? The safest
way to do this is to wipe everything out in TWRP - data factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe
Dalvik cache - then install the new ROM. Before doing that, though, make sure to backup all
user apps and data so you can restore them easily after a clean wipe. This can be done using
Titanium Backup that can be downloaded free from the Market.
After a new ROM is installed, an error 'E:Cannot load volume /misc!' will show up in TWRP.
Disregard the message. It is harmless and it pertains to a partition that TWRP checks and
does not exist. Just reboot after that and everything should be fine.

How do I resolve "insufficient space" error when installing apps, xron-ified 2.2.
I did a search to no avail. I also tried to move apps to SD card but that kills the SD card mount point!

Hey guys
So I've been a quiet member for ages but now, I have problems with my Hero (Android 1.5) and need some help. I've read online but I don't seem to see anyone else that has this problem - when I go into recovery mode, I can't do the USB-MS thing, nor can I backup like point 3).
I just did something different (really not sure what), but my phone now won't go into recovery when its plugged into the computer and Win7 says the device driver was not successfully installed.
"2. Make sure your phone is in recovery mode (Home + Power)
Plug your phone into your computer and select "USB-MS toggle" in recovery
Place the Custom ROM on your SD card in the main directory and press Home when it has finished copying over
3. Select Backup/Restore > Nand backup > confirm with Home > Wait
(or Nand + Ext if you have A2SD setup)
4. Press back then select Wipe from the main menu, then select:
Wipe data/factory reset > Home
Wipe cache > Home
Wipe Dalvik-cache > Home
Wipe SD:ext partition > Home
Press back button
Select Flash Zip from SD Card
Select the file
Press Home to confirm"
I have already done the recovery ROM thing and I'm trying to install VillainROM (not quite there yet, but just mentioning it). Can someone please help me before I lose my mind Thanks guys!
OK, can you get into recovery when the phone is NOT plugged into the computer? It's not necessary to be plugged into USB to do from step 3 onwards.

Hi,
Can you post which guide you're using. I think you need to install a patched recovery like AmonRA though.
There is a "rooting" guide which I think you will need to follow first.
Ok, this wasn't the exact one but they're very similar
Oh, got this error, so please excuse the following:
villainrom co uk/vBwiki/index.php/Installing_Custom_ROMs
I compared a lot of different ones and I'm not sure which one I posted...
I can get into recovery without it being plugged in, but the computer doesn't pick the phone up if I plug it in after its in recovery mode.
@pulser_g2: I've done all of this stuff:
•Install HTC Sync from here
•Download Universal Androot
•Download AmonRA Recovery v1.7.0.1.img – easier if you rename this “recovery.img” when it is on your sdcard
Place both downloaded files on your SD Card
Root & Recovery
•Download and install Astro File Manager from the Market
•Open Astro and find and install Universal Androot from your sdcard:
Select UniversalAndroot.apk > Open App Manager > Install > Settings> [tick] Unknown Sources > OK > Back > Select UniversalAndroot.apk > Open App Manager > Install > Install > Open
•In the app and choose the correct version from the dropdown box:
•Superuser for Android 2.0~2.2 – if you have updated your phone recently
•Superuser for Android 1.5~1.6 – if you have refused updates recently or your country/provider hasn’t released one yet
Then choose: “Root ”
Wait until it says “Woot ! Your device is rooted !” and exit the program.
•Download and install Android Terminal Emulator from the Market
•Run “Terminal Emulator” the program and type in the following:
su [enter]
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img [enter]
reboot recovery [enter]
•Your phone should now restart and place you in recovery mode. You can also do this manually by turning off your phone and press Home + Power to turn it back on.
Do I still need AmonRA? Is that from MarketPlace?
I have put down the simplest (can you say simplest?) instructions for installing Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread on the Xperia X10.
Some may say that dummies should not use Alpha ROMs, however, in this particular case I would disagree. I have been testing this ROM for 3-4 days now and I find that it is ready for daily use if you can give up features such as camera, GPS, and some other stuff.
This ROM is made by Jerpelea, all creds to him. Donate and buy him a beer (or orange juice depending on what he prefers).
Use these instruction with precaution. With this said, if any problems occur and your phone is in any kind of way damaged, I will not be held responsible.
For more info and updates on ROM read the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911364
According to Jerpelea, you shall install it in this order.
MULTITOUCH INSTALLATION ON (ANY?) 2.x ROM
1. Download MT ENABLER by Bin4ry.
2. Create a folder called "MT Enabler" and move the file that you just downloaded (MT_enabler.rar) into it.
3. Extract the file (MT_enabler.rar) with Winrar or Winzip.
4. Now you will have 2 important files and they're both called "X10flash". One installs the Multitouch via cmd and the other one via X10Flashtool. Double click ONE of them If you choose the one that installs via flashtool you will have to press the button "Flash" that is shown in the program
5. Follow the instructions given and if you are asked to "connect Xperia in flash mode" do so by:
5.1 Turn X10 off
5.2 Disconnect from computer
5.3 Hold down BACK button WHILE inserting the USB cable (be sure that the other end is connected to your computer)
5.4 When the LED LIGHT TURNS GREEN, your X10 is in "flash mode"
6. When it is done remove the USB cable and reboot your X10.
7. Enable Unknown Sources (1) and USB debugging (2)
(1) MENU button -> Preferences -> Applications
(2) MENU button -> Preferences -> Applications -> Development
8. Houston, we have multitouch!
OBSERVE! If you do not have multitouch in your browser or in Google Maps please follow THIS simple guide to enable it! However, I believe you will have it enabled in every app
ROM INSTALLATION
1. If you haven't put in xRecovery in your X10 do so by following the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571&highlight=xrecovery
(read the requirements as well)
2. Download the ROM from here: http://hotfile.com/dl/99887488/c3452ec/gb_beta_0008.rar.html
3. Extract the file (with winrar or winzip) and you will have a folder called "gb_alpha_0008".
4. Inside this folder you will have three folders, of which two are .Zip files. Copy the one called "gapps-hdpi-20101226" and "signed_008" to your phone. Don't copy them to a specific folder, just to the main folder also called the root folder of your SD card. (Of course, to do this you will have to connect your X10 to your computer and mount the SD card).
3. Now unmount your SD card, reboot your phone and enter xRecovery by pressing the BACK button repeatedly when the white "Sony Ericsson" text comes up during the boot up.
4. Inside xRecovery you can navigate up and down by pressing the VOLUME buttons, choosing an option by pressing the HOME button and going back by pressing the BACK button. Now choose...
4.1 "Install custom zip"
4.2 "Choose custom zip from sdcard"
4.3 Find and choose "signed_008.zip"
4.4 Let it work...
4.5 "Choose custom zip from sdcard"
4.6 Find and choose "gapps-hdpi-20101226"
4.7 Let it work...
4.8 Go back and choose "Reboot phone".
Now you have the ROM installed..
However, we're not done here...
Your phone will freeze on the "Sony Ericsson" text thingy.. Now do this:
1. Connect your X10 to your computer
2. Download the Android SDK from here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
3. Put the SDK folder that you just downloaded in C:\
4. Open cmd.exe (search for it in your PC) and write the following text without citation marks "" or brackets () :
"cd C:\(the name of the SDK folder that you downloaded)\android\tools" and press ENTER
5. Now write the following, without citation marks "", and press ENTER between each one:
"adb shell"
"busybox killall5"
6. Wait approximately 10 seconds, take out the battery from your X10, put it back in, start your phone..
BACKUP BEFORE INSTALLATION OF NEW ROM VERSION
If you are about to install a new version of this ROM, I am glad to present you a little backup tips from cobrato
If you have installed a previous GB release, do a backup under xRecovery. For subsequent release, after step 4.7: You can do the following:
Backup & Restore --> Advance Restore --> Select your backup --> Restore Data --> Reboot --> Voila

We should login to the market once BEFORE installing the googole apps ZIP, right? Or is that requred BEFORE installing any hotfixes?
gread guide, posted link on my site if you dont mind http://bitsnacker.com/index.php/201...talling-2-3-1-android-gingerbread-on-your-x10
@javagreen It was not necessary for me, the beauty of it is that you can do it the way you mentioned if your market does not work
@go3asy great idea!
Cheers!
Sent from my X10 with 2.3.1
thanks for this!

Guys please i need an advice .... do i wait until this release become stable or jump into Z's 2.2 freeX10 .. is it going to take to long to fix it ? . why they work on HTC and 2.2 if they have 2.3.1 alpha ? i'm confused i don't want to keep losing my apps and settings . i mean i don't wanna keep switching between roms too much. BTW thanks for the Awesome tutorial and i would thank J for spending his time trying to apply 2.3.1 for us

"cd C:\(the name of the SDK folder that you downloaded)\android\tools" and press ENTER , so try tyou write this: C:\(the name of the SDK folder that you downloaded)\android\platform-tools" and press ENTER
Sorry for bad english.
Any guide
Possibly using linux machine
I think you should be able to perform all the steps done in adb using a linux machine. If you don't have a linux machine go to http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php and download the 32-bit DVD. You can burn it to a DVD and boot your PC to the DVD. I can get you more instructions if you need them.
I'm going to try this out this weekend. (Hopefully, Friday night.) I'll let you know if it works, and get you a step-by-step.
I have ubuntu
11.04
waiting for the instructions
thanks
Working on it now.
Downloading bt5.tar.bz2 now. It'll be a bit. 667MB... about an hour remaining.
The basic idea is to format the sdcard to ext3 using Gparted. (That WILL wipe all of your data!)
Then copy the files listed in bt5 post in the development forum by slimm609, and follow his instructions from that point on.
It should be simple.... (Please realize this is an over simplified summary, not instructions.)
I'm still going to try it out myself, and post a step-by-step as an alternate means for the command line phobic.
OK. Just booted to BackTrack
OK. It worked. It'll take me a few minutes to type up the step-by-step.
BT5 Setup - the GUI method (Ubuntu)
First of you will need a micro SDcard Reader for your Ubuntu machine, a recovery kernel, (like clockwork mod) and a application called Gparted (Graphical Partition Editor) on the Ubuntu machine. If you don't have it installed it is available in the repos.
1. Download the necessary .zip files from the original thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075054
(This would also be a good time to back up your data from the Tablet to another storage medium just in case.)
2. Mount the micro SDcard to your Ubuntu Machine. Copy anything from the SDcard you wish to keep. You WILL lose the data on this card when it is formatted.
3. Open Gparted. In the upper right hand corner select the micro SDcard device name. (Typically /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc, please be certain before proceeding.)
4. The partitions on the device should appear in the lower window. Right click on the partition you want to format, (usually /sdb1) and select "unmount".
I cannot stress enough that the following step will erase the data off of what ever device you have chosen! Choose wisely.
Right click the same partition and select "Format to" > ext3.
Select "Edit" from the menu up top, and "Apply all Operations"
5. Remount the SDcard. Copy the bt5.tar.bz2 file to the SDcard. This will take a minute or two. Once it is finished copying. Right click on the bt5.tar.bz2 icon, and select "open as administrator" This should open Archive manager as root. (It should ask for a password.)
It will take it a minute or two to read the archive and present the contents. (It's Large.)
6. Click the "Extract" button up top. In the window that pops up double check that you are pointed to the micro SDcard. (Usually /media/Random-Characters) Click the "Extract" button at the bottom right. You should get a progress bar and see folders begin to populate the File manager's window. This will take several minutes. Get a cup of coffee...
7. Once this is finished, delete the bt5.tar.bz2 file.
8. On your Gtablet, download the three (3) kernel .zip files listed in the original thread.
Move them to a folder you can easily find. (I did AA_kernels, so it's first in the list and easy to remember.)
9. Reboot the G-tab. Enter recovery mode, by pressing the volume up (+) key while pressing the power button. In the recovery mode flash the droid-kern_backup.zip to backup your current android kernel. This will allow you to switch back to the android install you have now.
For Clockwork Mod (CWM) its "install zip from sdcard" > "choose zip from sdcard" > folder you named earlier > droid-kern_backup.zip.
10. After it is finished, selec the bt5kern-01-20110525.zip . This will set the tablet to boot to the BT5 load. Press the back button until you see the option to "reboot system now" and select it.
Once you reboot you should boot into BackTrack5. The screen may go dark and/or have a few white blocks, before it pops up some indeterminable text. Don't worry, be patient.
The login screen should say Clemintine and allow you to position the mouse over the "user name" block. Tap to select. In order to type you will need a physical keyboard plugged in, or you should see a man in a circle at the bottom right of the screen. Clicking that Icon will bring up options for assistance which include an on screen keyboard.
Enter "root". (Without quotation marks.) for the user name.
Enter "toor" for the password.
That should have you set to play. To return to the android install, reboot to recovery mode, and select the restore_droid-kern.zip . Another warning! Don't select the backup.zip at this time or you may over write the saved kernel.
I hope this helps. If I seemed to explain things to a painful detail, it's not to insult anyone's intelligence. That is lovely.
How about a dual boot setup? has that been tried?
Dual boot
This is a dual boot solution. To switch between distros, boot into recovery mode, and select the kernel you want.
BT5_kern.zip for BackTrack, or restore_droid-kern.zip to restore the kernel you backed up in the 9th step.
Look at the next to last paragraph.

I have tryed the above directions 15 times. 1st using the whole partition of my external micro SD, 16 gig. Also tryed shrinking the partition and only having 4 gig availble without success. The bootload kernal loads but it sits there the black screen after wiping the birds out. What am I doing wrong.
Edit ( fixed issue ): My Ubuntu machine wouldn't let give me permission to extract the .tar file onto the newly formated micro SD. Ended up creating a app in the task bar to open thing under root user. Fixed and works but they sayed wifi works and it doesn't. Even tryed changing the 2 files that were posted from the creator of the 1.2 boot kernal for BT and still nothing. I guess I am on my own from there. TY.
Stuck
mine gets stuck after it has some txt roll down the screen then the screen go black and it just stays there. any help?
Hey folks,
Just ordered the Droid DNA off of eBay. It's factory condition, so it's not rooted or unlocked or anything.
I want to install the GPE rom on it from Newt. I've been reading as much as I can on how to do this and want to confirm my understanding. Forgive my noobness. These are the high level steps that I think I have to go through:
1) Run Moonshine. This will give me S-Off and an unlocked bootloader. This is all I need to put on a custom recovery.
2) Install Clockwork Mod recovery. This will allow me to flash kernels and put new roms on
3) Use Clockwork Mod to first backup the device and then put the GPE rom on. I don't need to flash a kernel
Am I right here?
Thanks a lot!
You are go for launch. Before flashing GPE, you may also want to get Titanium Backup and backup your apps.

just dont so any type of phone data wipe untill you transfer a rom to it and dont do system wipe ever
you cant reliably transfer roms in recovery so it will cause you some hassle
You got it. I prefer TWRP for recovery myself. But it's all just personal taste.

Can you elaborate on that? Everything I'm reading says it's fine to do a factory days reset on custom roms. Are you referring to something else? Thanks

Disregard that post. You must wipe system when flashing different ROM bases, if you don't you'll have issues if the ROM doesn't wipe on install. Factory reset is perfectly fine and 100% recommended for flashing ROMs. Don't wipe internal storage until after you flash a ROM unless you want to side load or push a ROM to flash, this is what he meant, I think, just provided false information with it.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - Carbon
I compiled a list of instructions on how to do it. This is starting with a brand new phone, all the way to installing the GPE custom rom using TWRP on a Windows PC. If anyone has a few minutes to look it over, I'd love the feedback (like maybe there are better ways to do this). But regardless, I thought this could be helpful to someone else in the future:
Disclaimer: I am not an expert and you should take my advice with a grain of salt. You can brick your phone by doing this and I'm not responsible if you do, even if you followed my instructions exactly. If you do run into a problem I won't be able to help you as again, I am not an expert. You're on your own and doing this at your own freewill and you are accepting responsibility from any good or bad that comes from it. Good Luck
Prerequisite: You must be on Firmware 2.06
1. Download and install HTC Sync Manager (to get drivers for phone) from:
http://www.htc.com/www/software/htc-sync-manager/
2. Now Uninstall HTC Sync Manager (drivers will remain behind)
3. Now install Android MiniSDK to get Fastboot and adb from:
http://androidforums.com/attachment...81-adb-guide-updated-2013-05-21-sdk-tools.zip
4. Right-click My Computer, click Properties, Advanced System Settings, and Environment Variables. Under User Variables, click Path, Edit, and at the end of the line, add a semicolon and the directory to your SDK tools. Do the same for the Path under System Variables and click OK to close the several windows we used to get here.
5. Download Moonshine from:
http://moonshine.io
6. Disable the lock screen, disable fast boot, and enable USB debugging
Settings -> Personalize -> Lock screen style and select No lock screen.
Settings -> Battery -> UNcheck “fast boot”
Settings -> Developer Options, turn them on (the toggle is at the top right), and check the box next to USB debugging.
7. Connect phone to computer using original USB cable (preferably to a USB 2.0 port as 3.0 has some issues)
8. Extract Moonshine Zip file
9. Run distiller.exe from the folder where you extracted Moonshine. Read all the messages and answer Yes to any prompts.
Steps 1-9 at: http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/set-your-htc-one-s-off-using-moonshine-windows-0147992/

Enjoy!
Hi,
I bought this phone from China and I wanted to convert it to an international regular android phone.
This sounds easy, the theory is that, root the phone to get rid of Chinese apps then install Google Play... that would be sufficient for me.
The problem is that in practice that proved to be more complicated especially if one have not done this before.
The Phone
ZTE V5S / Grand Memo 5S
Hardware Platform: MT6589
Cores: Quad Core
CPU: 1.5G Hz
GPU: PowerVR SGX544MP
RAM: 1GB
ROM: 8GB
Display Size: 5.7 inch HD
Screen Resolution: 720×1280
Screen Type: IPS-LCD, Multi-Touch Capcitive Screen
Display Colour: 16 Million Colors
Operating System: Android 4.2
I have read forums in the last couple of days and managed to:
- root the device
- remove china stuff
- installed Google Play
The store is working but the Google apps such as YouTube are giving this error:
"Google Play services, which some of your applications rely on, is not supported by your device. Please contact the manufacturer for assistance."
I understand (from googling) that I have to instal a new ROM which is modified to support this.
I have downloaded couple of ROMs from Chinese sites but following their instructions, I could not install the ZIP files.
Not speaking Chinese, used web translation.
Ideally, I am looking to install a multilingual ROM for my device.
Later edit: I have installed the google play posted here and now youtube works but play is crashing if i try to install anything.
Any help highly appreciated.
Thank you.
[Resolved] Flashing ZTE Grand Memo 5S (aka ZTE Memo V5S)
Managed to resolve my problem... here is the step by step guide.
As usual, I'm not responsible if you brick your pone, is your decision to follow the below steps.
Some advices:
- Use a good quality USB cable which plugs firmly in the phone and PC
- Make sure that eventual power outage does not power off pc (ie use laptop)
- Do not unplug cable (accidentally) from PC/Phone while program running and last message is not: --- task is complete ---
- Try not using PC for other (resource consuming) activities.
- Be patient... some processes take quite long time
- Upload ROM which is designed for Your device!
- If you want to download ROM using SP Flash Tool, you need to dismount the phone as battery is not removable. Make an NANDROID
backup as this will backup absolutely everything... including user data.
1. Download MTK Droid Tools (because this is a MediaTek device)
2. Download SP Flash Tool (not used... just to have it in case you need to flash back a backup)
3. DOwnload a ROM (ZTE_V5S_WCDMA_Google_ROOT_140522.zip)
4. DOwnload a Patch for splash screen in Zip format (optional).
5. Copy to sd card:
- The downloaded ROM, rename to "update.zip". This is important otherwise will might give an error when flasing.
- The splash screen patch if you have it.
- Insert sd card in the phone.
6. Open MTKdroidTools.exe
- in few minutes your phone details should show up on Phone information tab.
7. Connect Phone via USB to PC
8. In USB computer options choose to connect with option "Connect to PC software", this will turn on USB debug
9. Root the phone, follow these steps:
- MTK Droid tools, after phone is read, press Root
- When prompted to create backup of ROM, press Yes (For the subsequent restoration of bla, bla... To make it now?)
- When prompted pack the backed up ROM, press Yes
- When Prompted choose between SuperSU or Superuser, choose SuperSU. SuperSU is still supported by develper, this is why.
- Click on IMEI/NVRAM and press backup... you may need that as well if something goes wrong.
Now you have you phone rooted and the original ROM zipped in the backup folder under MTK Droid Tools folder.
- Reboot the phone. You might have to root again but no need to save anything.
10. MTK Droid tools, after phone is read, go to the other tab: root, backup, recovery
11. If you wish, you can make another backup of your ROM with ROOT privileges this time... Press Backup and wait to complete.
12. Press button "To prepare blocks for Flashtool", select .md5 file from the last backup folder you made.
- Now you have the copy of the original software
13. Position radio buttton on the option: "To use boot from phone"
14. Press button "Recovery and Boot"
- When prompted "To make CWM recovery automatically?", press Yes
- When prompted to upload ony if phone is loaded, press Yes
- When prompted to "Install created recovery to phone?", press Yes
- when prompted "To reload phone in recovery to phone?", press Yes
15. You are now in recovery mode, to navigate up-down use Volume button, to choose/execute an item use power button.
16. Navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" then execute, on the next screen navigate to "Yes - ..." then choose it
17. Navigate to "whipe cache partition" then execute, on the next screen navigate to "Yes - ..." then choose it
18. Navigate to "install zip from sdcard" then execute, on the next screen navigate to "choose zip from sdcard"
19. Now you see content of SD Card, navigate to ROM file (update.zip) then execute, on the next screen navigate to "Yes - ..."
then choose it
20. Once finished GO back then reboot the phone
21. It will take a bit longer to load first time
22. To install the splash screen go to recovery mode again, choose to update from SD then confirm... same steps as for the ROM.
23. Open google play, login, a number of updates will show up, update all Google Play components
To get into recovery mode you have few options, i'll give one:
a. Turn off phone
b. Press and keep pressed Volume Up
c. Press and keep pressed Power button
d. Keep both pressed until splash screen shows up then release both
Now you may want to get rid of chinese stuff. To do so, folow these steps:
1. Power your phone
2. Open MTKdroidTools.exe
3. Connect Phone via USB to PC
4. In USB computer options choose to connect with option "Connect to PC software", this will turn on USB debug
5. After phone is loaded press Root (just to get privileges)
6. When prompted "Receive root privileges bla, bla...", choose yes
7. Press Super User... choose to user SuperSU
8. Press Build.Prop
9. Press Delete china... this will remove the only keyboard as well which is chinese so skip this step.
10. Press reboot
11. Now most of the chinese stuff is gone
12. Download and install:
- More locale or locale 2 if you want interface in a certain language
- Swiftkey to get a decent keyboard (disable chinese one)
- 3D Digital weather
- Anything else yo may want.
13. Use system optimiser to uninstall the rest of the Chinese apps
You are done... I have done this walkghrough while I was mooding my phone. Dont ask questions on errors as I have no idea. These
steps where collected while various forums for ready 3 days.
Hope someone will find useful... good luck.
