[Q] From S to S2.. (trying to Root) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings
I'm a new user of android, as such, I have a lot of question. First of all, I would like to share my background with the S1 and my first attemp for a root. One word FAIL, the device died (no recovery, no download mode, no nothing, just black screen) during odin instalation process. Well, good bye S1, hello S2. The situation is I would like to have root acces for:
1.- Enjoy the power of the phone
2.- Delete all the trash of my phone carrier (Who lives in mexico, will understand what I'm talking about. Yes TELCEL)
3.- And many, many reasons more
Below will find my current data
Model: GT-I9100
Android Version: 2.3.6
Base Band version: I9100UHKD8
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100UMKK1-CL716259 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UMKK1
The Question. Where to start. I already tried on other forums they have to many guides to the same thing. Each one different from another.
I apologize in advance for the long text or for the inconvenience in case (and probably) of repeated post

Good luck!
Ps: I'd get into more details but gotta rush to work

at this time I have root access, and i started to delete some system apps (carrier stuff) but I receive an alert
"The application Social Hub (process com.se.android.socialhub) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again" after that force closure
How bad is it?

Don't delete anything. At least not in the first instance. Freeze one or two apps at a time every couple of days & see if you get results like the FCs you've experienced.
That way you can easily narrow down which app being frozen is forcing the FCs. If you freeze a whole bunch at once, just makes it harder to work out what's caused the problem.
And frankly, I don't delete anything outright. Ever. Not system related stuff/apps that are included with a rom. Freezing has the same effect & if you do have problems, it's easier to unfreeze than restore a backup or having to look around for the apk if you don't have a backup.
In other words, don't be in such a hurry to delete stuff Mr Egan has already advised you the same only a single post before yours, seems you didn't listen, did you ?

it seems that I did not put much attention. I found the problem. mistakenly delete an "application" called badge.provider. the device is functioning "normally" only have the following details
1.-socialhub Alert - Force to closed
2.-No sms (process.com.android.mms) have stopped unexpectedly
sarc on/ Who knew that badge.provider it was important. Help please

Factory reset should revert to flashed firmware .
If you dont know what it is dont remove it .
The search button should find the applications safe to remove post .

it isnt fatal

Question,
1.How did u root it? because CF's kernels dont make a mess anytime if rooted properly
socialhub IMHO u can freeze it, its a sammie bloatware
process.com.android.mms which means no mms and not sms , pretty much like a non responsive servlet call.
Try restoring your original firmware from samfirmware site and re-root , if you wanna just root u can use DoomLord's tool or Superoneclick, thats way easier.
Hope this helps

Samfirmware site is not good for a beginner because of the multiple files and the damn pit file + repartition instruction which will kill the phone.
Best to use Intratech's stock ROM thread since there is only 1 file to flash which includes every part in the package and they don't wipe as well unless mentioned.
ifentanez,
Looking at your original build number, are you with Telcel? If you are, you can get your stock UMKK1 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
Scroll down to Telcel and flash the firmware file which is http://www.multiupload.com/L102CLI3YZ
You don't need to flash the kernel file as it is already included in that firmware file.

No. That's don't work. He have to reflash the entire rom or push the files he wiped.

If I am right you have CWM recovery, so why not flash some of the clean roms that are available? I suggest hyperdroid.

Installing Custom Rom... A noob

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.
thanx guys

Flash & Root Question.

As A Noob here im a small bit confused.
Was going to follow this link Complete Noobs Guide but some of the links in that guide dont work anymore.
So then I came across this Video and seems too easy to do
Is the video the same thing as the noobs guide?
If it is, and I follow the video, what Rom is the best one to use.
Just looking for a stable rom, good looking and saves battery.
Thank you, great website.
Rom is your choice, yes it's so simple it takes literally a couple of mins, it took me longer to dl the files needed than to root
Personally i use the rom in my sig - Neo is the dogs bollocks
Thanks for the help.
Think I have everything sorted, last thing is do I need an SD card for this.
Dont think I do but just want to make sure before start.
Nope you can just use internal memory...
As far as I know you don't need an SD card. I rooted mine last night and was really surprised how easy it is. Literally a 5 minute process (including flashing the sensation ROM). After reading up on here I used this thread and this page which has an easy to follow, summarised guide below the video.
It was a lot easier than I expected but to be far the last device I rooted was a HTC and so didn't know what to expect without it being locked.
If you run into any problems just search for the solution as so many people have rooted I'm pretty sure everything will have been covered.
Make sure you have a insecure kernel>use SuperOneClick to root>flash CWM>put ROM on sd>boot in CWM recovery>wipe data & cache & dalvik cache> install from sd>ROM of choice>do it twice just to be safe! You're done. If you need any additional help browse/search xda forums. If you need any additional help let me know!
Ok successfully rooted and placed a kernel on the phone.
Before I put on a new ROM, I wanted to get rid of the yellow triangle.
I found this page but all the files are on mega upload which is currently down at the minute.
Any ideas how I can get a stock kernels to remove the yellow triangle?
I just seen he has updated all the links. Great news.
Just read on the last comments and im now confused.
Does the link in the previous comment fix the yellow triangle?
yellow triangle indicate that you have not a stock kernel on your phone,
normally flash a stock one and the triangle will go away,
I have not searching deep to get rid of the triangle with any kernel but ways seems to be possible.. posts on dev forum answer this
a usb jig is fine and the simple one I think, but you have to make or buy it..
try the V3RTR3MA 4.6 from the android development forum here
its one of the best roms i've ever flashed
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Why are you even bothered by it? U only see it on boot up
Because its very easy to get rid of.
All I need is a original Kernel.
I downloaded one and the image file is a MD5 file?

You dont have CWM recovery (stock recovery wont flash custom rom zips), go do some more reading before you flash a rom so you understand what you are getting into, FAQ's here.

[Q] T-Mobile UK ICS Rooting Problems

Hello, I'm currently trying to root my T-Mobile (UK) S2 using Odin. It is using ICS 4.0.3
My original kernel is XXBVLPB. I've downloaded the CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5 insecure kernel which is the one I keep trying to use.
All goes well in Odin, and it says pass.
Unfortunately, when the phone reboots, it goes to the first splash screen with the yellow triangle and powers off.
Any attempt to switch it back on produces the same result.
Am I missing something blatantly obvious?
I'm a relative noob, so please go easy on me. I've searched the forums quite thoroughly beforehand but to no avail.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Fred.
Should not be doing that, get the official kernel and flash back using Odinand see If it boots.

That does work fine and takes phone back to normal, unrooted state. I would however love to root if anyone has any info or has done it themselves.

Has anyone here managed to root their (UK) T-Mobile Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 running 'ICS' 4.0.3 with kernel/baseband/build xxBVLPB?

You realise that method explicitly says "Choose apply update from external storage.", right? In other words, you need a microSD card. If you get past that part (stock recovery) and are indeed in CWM recovery, make sure you're using the correct "install zip from x".
I'm not familiar with your particular ROM, but someone mentioned a random Italian ROM had a full /system partition, making rooting not entirely straight forward. This was my response to him: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25479898#post25479898

You seem to have ignored the most important part of the thread I linked, about /system being full (well, that and just flashing an unbranded ROM). Can you check how much free space is in /system? (easiest noob friendly way would be to install Titanium Backup which should function without root to display "System ROM" free space at the bottom of the main screen).

If CF-root is failing to boot, and the other method for rooting isn't showing you any zips on the SD card, make you're sure you've tried both "install zip from" options (yes, there are two, which I mentioned earlier) from the alternative option to root.
If you've exhausted all of those, other options are running adb logcat while booting CF-root to see what's crashing, flashing alternative, rooted ICS kernels, or flashing a different stock ROM.
DONE IT!!

My word....After a long and mainly fruitless couple of days, I've FINALLY ROOTED!!
This is the one that worked for me: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/
So it appears that the insecure kernels I was using were not compatible, even though they were a letter for letter match!.
I'd like to offer many thanks to all those who helped me on here!! Also big thanks to the guys at GalaxyS2root.com
What would be the best place to post this link for all the T-Mobile UK users who might be interested in doing the same?
Link kernel is just a copy of Chainfires kernel from the CFRoot post .

I'd like to offer many thanks to all those who helped me on here!! Also big thanks to the guys at GalaxyS2root.com
What would be the best place to post this link for all the T-Mobile UK users who might be interested in doing the same?

I must add, that if you use this method, the kernel prevents you from accessing apps on the SD card....This has been fixed with THIS: http://download.chainfire.eu/152/[email protected] <span class=

I noticed that dialing a few contacts gives these type of errors. Can you give any solution for this without being reset. If flashing or reset is compulsory then how to backup and reinstall stock rom. Please tell me the steps involved. And one more, where can i get the stock rom?

From 4.0.3 to Kitkat

Hello, i'm from the Netherlands,
I've tried this several times and it didn't work...
What am i supose to do to prepair mine S2 to flash to Kittkat. If i try to flash a custom rom to install (Muiu) the phone starts up but immidiatly turns black and i have to eject the battery to be able to start the S2 again.
I've done the wipe things.
Can someone give me instruction how to install the new Kittkat with (if it's possible) download links
thank you :cyclops:

Um, can you search for this stuff that's easily found ? You've been told pretty much exactly what to do, I think you can manage this small part of it yourself.

if i could, i wouldn't ask...
just want to know if the flasing happens with Odin or within recovery, it isn't very easy found, because several manuals lead to different results...

let me ask it diffently:
I've got : CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100.tar
and to flash: miui_i9100_4.6.6_66a745e760_4.1.zip
everything ok?

If you try to flash the CWM alone via odin, you will not be able to boot. Get a kernel which is in tar format and you will have to flash that via odin. You can search for philz or hirox.
Once you have flashed the kernel, reboot to recovery, flash a KK compatible kernel (search for gustavo's, dorimanx or apolo), reboot to recovery, create a backup, flash your KK Rom (which you must have downloaded from the OP of that Rom), flash gapps and reboot.
In the list of your files, gapps is missing, get that too.
And in reality, if you spend some time searching and reading the manuals/guides then you wont have to ask these questions.

thank you, but i don't get it.. OP? i guess my questions are too stupid and i get a dozen of "search this and search that" so i won't bother anyone again :silly:
Your questions were not stupid. They are the basic questions which come to the newbie's mind. But you could either search for the stuff, go through the guides/manuals and spend your time reading and learning(which will be for your own good) or you could ask for spoonfeeding.
Anyways, if you do not want to invest time and energy in understanding all this then its your wish. But a lot of people here would not like to answer basic questions.

Look i just want a simple an plain answer, thats why i asked in the 1st place.
Some only rever to the search option or manuals... Like i said, it's confusing to me, i don't need to read stuff i don't need.
I got trouble, so this is why this section is called Help and Troubleshooting ....
I think also if you think that way, you can always reply to say people need to search and read manuals, that's just too easy to say
OP - Banjara is trying to help you. There's no point people giving you a bunch of steps you don't understand. If you don't take as much time as you need to in order to actually learn this stuff, you run the risk of ending up like this.
You may not necessarily do something completely daft like pull a cable in the middle of a flash, but modding your phone is not risk free. On the contrary, there are plenty of ways you can break your phone (to the point of you having to pay someone a not insignificant amount of money to fix it) doing this stuff.
Your questions aren't stupid, but you need to understand if you're not already experienced with this stuff, you're not going to somehow magically learn it all in 5 minutes. You have to take the time & put the effort in to learn it. And everything you need to learn is here, and it's easily found, again, with a bit of effort.
But like most people who come here, you're expecting it to be easy & obviously can't be bothered taking your time/are in too much of a rush.
That's fine, but don't whinge in Q&A if you bust your phone at some point.

The only one who have helped me is : Vivek_Neel
Other reactions are pointless, i was aware of the search thing, so i don't need reminders... Also: i rooted my phone several times, and the question were about if i will do it correctly if i take these steps... And i've done my search and i know a little bit more. Show me what you come up with and i give all the credits, because i can't find 1 basic step....... And please don't bother to react if it's on topic
