As A Noob here im a small bit confused.
Was going to follow this link Complete Noobs Guide but some of the links in that guide dont work anymore.
So then I came across this Video and seems too easy to do
Is the video the same thing as the noobs guide?
If it is, and I follow the video, what Rom is the best one to use.
Just looking for a stable rom, good looking and saves battery.
Thank you, great website.
Rom is your choice, yes it's so simple it takes literally a couple of mins, it took me longer to dl the files needed than to root
Personally i use the rom in my sig - Neo is the dogs bollocks
Thanks for the help.
Think I have everything sorted, last thing is do I need an SD card for this.
Dont think I do but just want to make sure before start.
Nope you can just use internal memory...
As far as I know you don't need an SD card. I rooted mine last night and was really surprised how easy it is. Literally a 5 minute process (including flashing the sensation ROM). After reading up on here I used this thread and this page which has an easy to follow, summarised guide below the video.
It was a lot easier than I expected but to be far the last device I rooted was a HTC and so didn't know what to expect without it being locked.
If you run into any problems just search for the solution as so many people have rooted I'm pretty sure everything will have been covered.
Make sure you have a insecure kernel>use SuperOneClick to root>flash CWM>put ROM on sd>boot in CWM recovery>wipe data & cache & dalvik cache> install from sd>ROM of choice>do it twice just to be safe! You're done. If you need any additional help browse/search xda forums. If you need any additional help let me know!
Ok successfully rooted and placed a kernel on the phone.
Before I put on a new ROM, I wanted to get rid of the yellow triangle.
I found this page but all the files are on mega upload which is currently down at the minute.
Any ideas how I can get a stock kernels to remove the yellow triangle?
I just seen he has updated all the links. Great news.
Just read on the last comments and im now confused.
Does the link in the previous comment fix the yellow triangle?
yellow triangle indicate that you have not a stock kernel on your phone,
normally flash a stock one and the triangle will go away,
I have not searching deep to get rid of the triangle with any kernel but ways seems to be possible.. posts on dev forum answer this
a usb jig is fine and the simple one I think, but you have to make or buy it..
try the V3RTR3MA 4.6 from the android development forum here
its one of the best roms i've ever flashed
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Why are you even bothered by it? U only see it on boot up
Because its very easy to get rid of.
All I need is a original Kernel.
I downloaded one and the image file is a MD5 file?
Is that correct?

You dont have CWM recovery (stock recovery wont flash custom rom zips), go do some more reading before you flash a rom so you understand what you are getting into, FAQ's here.

Ok so I rooted my galaxy s2 today and flashed Unnamed onto it without much a problem. I really enjoyed doing it but now I came onto XDA and on the first sticky in this forum it says in big red letters DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER....and of coarse this is what I have been using. What should I be using? And how do I change it.
If someone can please explain and remember I just started doing this stuff I would appreciate it so much!!!
I hope I wrote this correctly and people know what I am talking about. How do I use CWM if I don't use Rom Manager. What do I use beside Rom Manager?
did you flash codeworks kernel from the sticky? how are you using rom manager? to boot in cwm without rom manager, hold vol+, vol-, power till screen turns on and let go
Oh man i don't know what i did...I followed directions i found on the web, of coarse not here. So first things first i should erase Rom Manager? Next is it ok to flash code works kernel even though I'm rooted already?
i am by no means a dev, but heres a link the kernel i was talking about
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823
other than that does everything else work? some much needed help would be nice.
can this guy just odin the cwm kernel, and reflash without any ill effects?
edit
you did flash the right kernel when rooting right? not the i9100 for the euro version?

don't mind the idiot in this thread but here are a bunch of step by step directions from the other day

If you're already rooted there is no need to flash a kernel, all you need is to download and flash
the UnNamed v1.0.4 rom which can be found here: http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
The UnNamed rom already contains the proper kernel in it for our phones.
You don't need to erase or uninstall rom manager, just don't use it until a new version comes out
which is fully compatible with our phones.
If you want an app which is 100% compatible with our phones then check out this
CWM Manager which is a free app and can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/3potjte
This app is very simular to rom manager and easy to use because it's self-explanitory.
Happy Flashing!
Thank you so much this is the info I was looking for. I learn more and more stuff each day. This is much more complicated than jail breaking an iPhone.

They know you can figure it out...if they trusted in the intelligence of the average iPhone user to jailbreak their phones, there would be few jailbroken phones.
Basically, what the others are telling you is that you shouldn't use ROM manager at the moment, but that once you have CWM installed, you're good to go for installing other mods. You place the ROM files in the SDcard folder on your device, and then enter CWM recovery by turning off your phone, then holding down pwr, vol+, and vol- at the same time until the splash screen appears. You can then use CWM to install those files onto the phone.
Its possible you may need to redo your original kernel flash if you used ROM manager and it messed up CWM. If you haven't really done anything in ROM manager you might be ok.
Go easy on me guys I tried looking for the answers for the last 3-4 hours. ;/
I already rooted my phone using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310115
and unlocked the bootloaded as well using the htcdev website.
And I would like to install beastmod. I went through the faq and the whole bit but still have questions and still a tad bit confused. I even went online to google and search the forum.
I know this is the official thread for beast mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313017?referrerid=922386
I have unlocked the boot loader, do I need to flash the kernel still? This is where I am confuse.
I read the
"FAQ for the HTC Amaze 4G. Read Frequently Asked Questions before you post a question!"
and
"HTC AMAZE ROM Bible - Everything you need to know"
I'm coming from a Blackberry which I used for almost 6 years.
I'm just kinda stumped right now as far as steps I need to take if any prior to installing Beastmod. I have never installed a rom before but I figure I ask the questions above before attempting anything.
Forgive me if i'm wrong everyone, but i think the Kernel is already cooked into the ROM. So no need for flashing a kernel after flashing the ROM.
I too am new to the HTC Amaze. I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 and was also running BeastMod v4.0. And God is this a pain in the butt to root. Last HTC phone i had was a HTC TouchPro. WinMo6 ftl
Really? What made you go to the Amaze? I came in T Mobile store thinking I was going to walk out with the S2 but after 3 days I ended up leaving with the Amaze, just seemed like a better phone.
Have you installed beastmod on your phone going?
Oh i still have my SGS2, just got really bored with it dev wise. Too many Roms with pretty much the same things. BeastMod was really the only ROM that stood out. Just got my Amaze last night, so i haven't even been able to try to root it yet. I've been reading alot of tutorials, and it sounds fairly easy....just alot of steps than what i'm used to. But so far, i'm really liking the Amaze over the SGS2. Sense and the camera are a WIN!
As far as I can tell from reading the official BeastMod first post you do need to flash the kernel.
That message below is right in the change log.
"**FULL WIPE REQUIRED FOR v2.2.0 and Kernel Flash**
YES!
You must flash the Kernal with Kernal Flasher
We do not have S-off... Security Off
So Kernals can not be buried in the rom they have to be seperate. We do not anticipate S-off any time soon. Since bootoader is unlocked we can use ADB to push the kernal. VIOLA! for us mere mortals the mighty DEV have created a tool that does it for us!
I just want to help. I find it hard to believe you did not see this in like every Xboarder ROM thread there is! Follow instructions on front page of the ROMs. They are explicit.
Feel free to PM if you have issues though. Amaze is my first Android phone and I cut my teeth with it so I should be a good resource. Cheers
I still do not see that thread, I just looked. I;ve spent a few hours on this but still determined to do it.

Alright so fact, need to flash kernel 1st.
Alright I found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328141
Which I assume its the correct one.
I am confused at number 4,
4. Place the boot.img that you want to be flashed in the Kernel-Here folder.
Which boot.img? The one thats included in beastmod?
and 5
5. Make sure adb is enabled on your phone via settings
adb?
You always flash the ROM first then the Kernel.

I don't know what you mean by that could you be more specific please?
Do you see on the BeastMod thread where you downloaded the ROM?
Underneath it, it says "Kernel for 2.2.0" that is the boot.img download it.
As for ADB under settings this is just referring to "USB debugging" turned on.
Put the boot.img in the "Kernel Here" folder which is in the "Kernal Flash Tool v3".
Then after run the flash.bat (windows) or flash.sh(mac) file in that tool folder.
That should do it.

And where are you still having problems?
That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure that what I needed to do, I was semi sure but I do not want to brick my phone by doing a step I was not suppose to.
ADB is a confusing term debugging makes a lot more sense and that is what I figured but I did not see any reference between adb and debugging mode.
So after following these steps, this will install beastmod?
I saved my contacts, sms, and call logs using a program called supa back up, they were saved on my sd card.
Anything else I need to know?
And thank yo for taking the time to fill in the gaps I really do appreciate and hopefully this thread will help anyone else that was confused as I was.
UPDATE
Does the phone need to be in any specific mode? I have it as Disk Drive and after running the bat I get a msg saying error device not found" and "waiting for device"

The boot.img is the kernel. Flashing it doesn't mean you have BeastMod.
You need to download BeastMod and flash it through recovery to get BeastMod on your phone.
Remember to wipe data, wipe dalvik and wipe cache.
After you flash the ROM then you flash the kernel using the tool.
Sometimes the kernel needs to flashed twice to fix any issues you might have after flashing a ROM and new kernel.
First boot takes longer and after first boot, once the phone settles, reboot again.
Your phone needs to be in "charge only" and not "disk drive" for ADB to recognize it.
do not worry about bricking your phone, you actually cant since there is no s-off yet + htc hasnt released much of the sources so pretty much ur phone is locked and cant brick it.
OK I did the flash.bat, phone restarted.
So in order to install the beastmod, do I copy the beastmod file I downloaded into the sdcard? Then reboot and install it through recover?
How do I wipe the data?

Yes. Copy the zip you downloaded on to your sdcard then reboot into recovery.
Volume down + power.
Once in recovery you should have options.
First do a backup.
Then look for the options to wipe data/factory reset.
Then usually wipe cache and wipe dalvik are under the "advanced" option.
I do believe you have a custom recovery so your options might be different.
Navigate around to find the options to wipe all your data.
After you wipe then you navigate to "apply update from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard" select BeastMod and flash it.
You should be ready to go.
Sorry my instructions aren't specific as I haven't rooted my Amaze or flashed a custom ROM.
So I don't know what your recovery looks like.
I am going off my experience with 7 MT4Gs and 2 Sensations.
The steps should be pretty basic when flashing a ROM anyway.
I understand that for someone who is new at this reading the instructions might seem complicated at times.
I'm just trying my best to reword those instructions for you and put it steps you can understand.
Alright, final question, do I need to make a folder for the files that in the zip folder or do I just copy them to the sdcard2 directory as the way its shown when you un zip the beastmod.zip file?

Don't unzip it. Just place the entire thing on your sdcard.
If you're flashing the ROM through recovery you should not need to unzip it.
It's just placing it on your SDcard and flashing it.
ooooh
I will try it right now then.
OK
Off topic question, Cynogen is a mod like Beastmod correct?
UPDATE
Alright its been flashed yay it works lol. Do I need to flash the kernel again? I did it before, do i have to do it afterwards as well, you mention that earlier.
Boy it looks so different...... so the Sense theme is still there but just hidden in some sort of way? Will they ever disable the security on this phone or is that permanent?
Dude if the admin are smart they will PIN this thread. I am a computer guy I fix them for a living mod the etc and damm this was a pain in the ass. The information is there but its missing certain details and its scattered, I searched around and sort of has the jist of it but honestly they should make a faq on how to more or less how its detailed in this thread, would save a lot of time and effort.

This is going to need some getting use to....
Any advice on what to do next? lol Like I said this is the 1st time I've own a phone that is not a blackberry...
Hello, I'm currently trying to root my T-Mobile (UK) S2 using Odin. It is using ICS 4.0.3
My original kernel is XXBVLPB. I've downloaded the CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5 insecure kernel which is the one I keep trying to use.
All goes well in Odin, and it says pass.
Unfortunately, when the phone reboots, it goes to the first splash screen with the yellow triangle and powers off.
Any attempt to switch it back on produces the same result.
Am I missing something blatantly obvious?
I'm a relative noob, so please go easy on me. I've searched the forums quite thoroughly beforehand but to no avail.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Fred.

Has anyone here managed to root their (UK) T-Mobile Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 running 'ICS' 4.0.3 with kernel/baseband/build xxBVLPB?
If, so, how did you go about it and which software did you use?

You realise that method explicitly says "Choose apply update from external storage.", right? In other words, you need a microSD card. If you get past that part (stock recovery) and are indeed in CWM recovery, make sure you're using the correct "install zip from x".
I'm not familiar with your particular ROM, but someone mentioned a random Italian ROM had a full /system partition, making rooting not entirely straight forward. This was my response to him: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25479898#post25479898

You seem to have ignored the most important part of the thread I linked, about /system being full (well, that and just flashing an unbranded ROM). Can you check how much free space is in /system? (easiest noob friendly way would be to install Titanium Backup which should function without root to display "System ROM" free space at the bottom of the main screen).

If CF-root is failing to boot, and the other method for rooting isn't showing you any zips on the SD card, make you're sure you've tried both "install zip from" options (yes, there are two, which I mentioned earlier) from the alternative option to root.
If you've exhausted all of those, other options are running adb logcat while booting CF-root to see what's crashing, flashing alternative, rooted ICS kernels, or flashing a different stock ROM.

Hello all
I have searched all over but have not found any similar problems.
I rooted my phone and installed CWM and would like to install a custom rom that exists for Gingerbread 2.3.6 (I flashed back to stock OS), I have found the rom that I seem to like a lot (Atomic rom) however when I put the .zip file into my external sd and use rom manager to install the rom it turns off, then the phone boots back up... Any ideas about what is happening? Maybe I do not have everything rom manager needs?
I am definitely not ready to flash the new rom using odin, unless you put the .zip file into PDA section and hit "Start" when the phone is in download mode... from the forums I read it is not as easy as installing the stock OS
Thanks in advance!

you leave so many questions unanswered here. you have provided some information here, but not the vital info and the last part is very confusing.
im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................
are you in the right forum for the right phone? this is for the Note1
I only ask this because I cant even find any GB ROMS for this phone. the Note 1 has been updated to official JB. I would and I am sure you would hate to flash wrong files to wrong phone and wind up with a BRICK.
I am not trying to make it sound as if you don't even know what phone you have, but you would not be the first to flash wrong and kill your phone.
may I suggest you read up in the "Super Everything Thread", which is in the General Forum. you will find exactly that, EVERYTHING, there. Odin is no big deal and super easy to use. also most don't even use CWM or ROM MANAGER anymore. TWRP is now the RECOVERY of choice and much more user friendly.
there are also many YOUTUBE tutorals that can walk you through. but first, lets make sure you are in the right place.
your phone is a ???????? NOTE 1
you carrier is ?????? att, tmo, ver, sprint
it is presently running ??????? GB, ICS, JB

you leave so many questions unanswered here. you have provided some information here, but not the vital info and the last part is very confusing.
im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................
are you in the right forum for the right phone? this is for the Note1
GB, ICS, JB
good luck and let us know if we help

Sorry about that... I have the Samsung Galaxy Note i717 for AT&T and I am running Gingerbread 2.3.6
I thought that if a rom could run on GB it could run on any phone that has GB but your response has lead me to know that it also depends on what phone I'm running, so thanks!
I'll go and double check to see if the rom I tried to install was for the note... I guess I'm lucky I didn't brick my phone when I tried flashing the other 2 rome xD... Gonna count my blessings tonight lol

don't need to apologize to me for anything. the more information the better. not only are there so many phones out there, there are variations of those phones that have gotten people in trouble.
you have the North American version
International version
Korean version
different internals and wont all take same ROM. just be careful my friend.

I am looking into this rom, looks pretty interesting. Flashing the "AT&T fix" though, do I put that on my SD card also?
Update: For some reason I can not install rome
I am not sure what I am doing wrong because I have Rom manager do everything when I put the .zip file on my SD card and the phone restarts like normal, I even tried doing it manually in cwm recovery. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. And this rom I know for sure is meant for GB and the i717.
Any suggestions? Thanks again
You mean it's a gb rom meant for the i717 galaxy note....... I think you may be a little mixed up on what a rom is and what your actually doing...... Explain in detail what exact steps your doing when your flashing the rom so someone can help you.

I appreciate your patience
Step 1: I put the downloaded .zip rom (saurom) into my external sd card in a special folder I named Roms
Step 2: I fire up Rom manager and go to "Install ROM from SD Card"
Step 3: Go to folder containing the Saurom .zip file and select it
Step 4: Make sure "Backup Existing Rom" and "Wipe Data and Cache" are selected
Step 5: Hit "Reboot And Install"
The phone will then turn off and restart like normal, I check but the rom did not install. I honestly have no idea how I'm screwing up lol
Do you have a custom recovery installed....

You have to understand this as well, the ROMS do not install in conjunction or within the current Stock ROM. They replace them. So as stated above you have to make sure you have CWM or TWRP installed and boot directly to the custom recovery. Then wipe your data/system/cache/dalvik and after all of that install the ROM of choice.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525341
The very first thing listed in this topic is how to install Saurom. No where does it say to try and do it through ROM Manager.
Maybe that is where your hiccup is coming from?
No further instructions needed good luck and happy flashing

Alright so I forgot that I had to wipe the data/system / cache / dalvik
But even when I tried that just now and went into installing the .zip file it said that the installation failed, is it because cwm was removed when I wiped the device?
Update your recovery to twrp 2.6

What would updating the recovery do?
Gets rid of status 7 error that makes it unable to flash.

haha, only problem is that the rom hit an error anyways so I'm still lost at what I am doing wrong...
Another question, when I reset all of the settings and stuff before I flash the rom, wouldn't that get rid of titanium back up? then how would I restore my apps and data?
Yes you are right... But first stick your phone in the freezer for 2hrs...then microwave it for 3 mins... It will cause your recovery to reconstruct and see your internal storage enabling developer options to be on... Then hit the rom installer button.

Um, can you search for this stuff that's easily found ? You've been told pretty much exactly what to do, I think you can manage this small part of it yourself.

if i could, i wouldn't ask...
just want to know if the flasing happens with Odin or within recovery, it isn't very easy found, because several manuals lead to different results...

and to flash: miui_i9100_4.6.6_66a745e760_4.1.zip
everything ok?

If you try to flash the CWM alone via odin, you will not be able to boot. Get a kernel which is in tar format and you will have to flash that via odin. You can search for philz or hirox.
Once you have flashed the kernel, reboot to recovery, flash a KK compatible kernel (search for gustavo's, dorimanx or apolo), reboot to recovery, create a backup, flash your KK Rom (which you must have downloaded from the OP of that Rom), flash gapps and reboot.
In the list of your files, gapps is missing, get that too.
And in reality, if you spend some time searching and reading the manuals/guides then you wont have to ask these questions.

thank you, but i don't get it.. OP? i guess my questions are too stupid and i get a dozen of "search this and search that" so i won't bother anyone again :silly:
Your questions were not stupid. They are the basic questions which come to the newbie's mind. But you could either search for the stuff, go through the guides/manuals and spend your time reading and learning(which will be for your own good) or you could ask for spoonfeeding.
Anyways, if you do not want to invest time and energy in understanding all this then its your wish. But a lot of people here would not like to answer basic questions.

Look i just want a simple an plain answer, thats why i asked in the 1st place.
Some only rever to the search option or manuals... Like i said, it's confusing to me, i don't need to read stuff i don't need.
I got trouble, so this is why this section is called Help and Troubleshooting ....
I think also if you think that way, you can always reply to say people need to search and read manuals, that's just too easy to say
OP - Banjara is trying to help you. There's no point people giving you a bunch of steps you don't understand. If you don't take as much time as you need to in order to actually learn this stuff, you run the risk of ending up like this.
You may not necessarily do something completely daft like pull a cable in the middle of a flash, but modding your phone is not risk free. On the contrary, there are plenty of ways you can break your phone (to the point of you having to pay someone a not insignificant amount of money to fix it) doing this stuff.
Your questions aren't stupid, but you need to understand if you're not already experienced with this stuff, you're not going to somehow magically learn it all in 5 minutes. You have to take the time & put the effort in to learn it. And everything you need to learn is here, and it's easily found, again, with a bit of effort.
But like most people who come here, you're expecting it to be easy & obviously can't be bothered taking your time/are in too much of a rush.
That's fine, but don't whinge in Q&A if you bust your phone at some point.

The only one who have helped me is : Vivek_Neel
Other reactions are pointless, i was aware of the search thing, so i don't need reminders... Also: i rooted my phone several times, and the question were about if i will do it correctly if i take these steps... And i've done my search and i know a little bit more. Show me what you come up with and i give all the credits, because i can't find 1 basic step....... And please don't bother to react if it's on topic
