Please help new to rooting!! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Ok so I rooted my galaxy s2 today and flashed Unnamed onto it without much a problem. I really enjoyed doing it but now I came onto XDA and on the first sticky in this forum it says in big red letters DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER....and of coarse this is what I have been using. What should I be using? And how do I change it.
If someone can please explain and remember I just started doing this stuff I would appreciate it so much!!!

I hope I wrote this correctly and people know what I am talking about. How do I use CWM if I don't use Rom Manager. What do I use beside Rom Manager?

did you flash codeworks kernel from the sticky? how are you using rom manager? to boot in cwm without rom manager, hold vol+, vol-, power till screen turns on and let go

Oh man i don't know what i did...I followed directions i found on the web, of coarse not here. So first things first i should erase Rom Manager? Next is it ok to flash code works kernel even though I'm rooted already?

i am by no means a dev, but heres a link the kernel i was talking about
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285823
other than that does everything else work? some much needed help would be nice.
can this guy just odin the cwm kernel, and reflash without any ill effects?
edit
you did flash the right kernel when rooting right? not the i9100 for the euro version?
edit 2
don't mind the idiot in this thread but here are a bunch of step by step directions from the other day

If you're already rooted there is no need to flash a kernel, all you need is to download and flash
the UnNamed v1.0.4 rom which can be found here: http://www.multiupload.com/9UTPJDVDZQ
The UnNamed rom already contains the proper kernel in it for our phones.
You don't need to erase or uninstall rom manager, just don't use it until a new version comes out
which is fully compatible with our phones.
If you want an app which is 100% compatible with our phones then check out this
CWM Manager which is a free app and can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/3potjte
This app is very simular to rom manager and easy to use because it's self-explanitory.
Happy Flashing!

Thank you so much this is the info I was looking for. I learn more and more stuff each day. This is much more complicated than jail breaking an iPhone.

They know you can figure it out...if they trusted in the intelligence of the average iPhone user to jailbreak their phones, there would be few jailbroken phones.
Basically, what the others are telling you is that you shouldn't use ROM manager at the moment, but that once you have CWM installed, you're good to go for installing other mods. You place the ROM files in the SDcard folder on your device, and then enter CWM recovery by turning off your phone, then holding down pwr, vol+, and vol- at the same time until the splash screen appears. You can then use CWM to install those files onto the phone.
Its possible you may need to redo your original kernel flash if you used ROM manager and it messed up CWM. If you haven't really done anything in ROM manager you might be ok.

Installing Custom Rom... A noob

Dear all,
I recently bought an LGP500 and im lovin it..!!!! Came across this forum and found that there are heaps of developments thats taking place in this platform! Really wanna thank each and everyone for their time and effort in trying to improvise on the OS.
I came across [UNOFFICIAL][ROM][stable:6.5.5,testing:6.6] CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.4) and i really want to install it (or in that case, and good GB OS) over my froyo. I have been through a lot of threads on flashing and rooting, but im still very unclear about the whole process. Im not a computer geek, and all these jargon kinda make me feel like a bozo .
As a last resort, im trying out this thread. Would really appreciate if someone could spare some time and provide a simple walkthrough from - (a) backing up the original OS, (b) on through flashing and rooting, (c) to installing this custom ROM and (d) finally restoring it if needed for warranty purposes. Im pretty sure there are a lot of people like me who has difficulty in understanding all these processes and missing out some great developments.
I hope everyone understands this and wont consider this as one of those spam/duplicate threads, where the same Qs are repeated again and again...!
Thanks a lot for any support
Yes, the same Q's are repeated yet again. But I'm in a good mood today and I'll try not to give you much flak for it.
1. Root your phone, use z4root if android v2.2, use gingerbreak (both are apps) if on v2.2.1/2.2.2.
2. Install a custom recovery, of two kinds: AmonRa or ClockworkMod. Search for these threads.
3. Boot into recovery mode for backing up your current rom and installing a new one.
I hope this is a good summary. Before asking any further questions, check out the FAQ link in my signature.
Also read some stickies to enhance your knowledge. The_error has made a very good introduction thread on technical stuff.
In android, for using custom roms, first thing is to root. Then one has to install a recovery. Then make a nandroid backup from recovery. Then wipe everything from recovery and then flash your desired rom.
I suggest you do this:
1. Instal z4root app from market and Root your phone via it.
2. Install rom manager from market.
3. Install clockwork mod recovery via it.
Now you can go to recovery via rom manager or swith off and press and hold for about 15-30 seconds home+volume down+ power button.
Once you are in recovery, you are free to fly.
so which will be the most stable rom (no over clocking) for smooth usage, simple ui, internet and good video playback support. I herd there is problem with some roms not being able to play divx files.
I say rjtchn`s cm7 has the best battery I've had
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA App
I can't find either z4root or Gingerbreak in the market. Searching XDA Developers I see several versions of z4root floating around, but since my Optimus V is 2.2.1, I gather I should be using Gingerbreak anyway? Pointers to the correct APK appreciated. Otherwise if I should be going the ADB route, pointers to a thread that has working drivers for the O V linked would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
OK, to answer my own Question, latest version (that I have tested works) of Gingerbreak is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Now to figure out which kernel or rom to go with...

hey i am a noob and can't understand what to do with those softwares which are mentioned above, is there any step by step guide from starting to end??
any help would be highly appreciable
ok..i am a noob too.. so what all guys are saying is that, let me simplify:
There are basically 3 steps,
first, install a "gingerbreak" app, which is a apk (u can copy it ur mem.card and using file manager (its default in your stock android), u can install it from ur android after copying
secondly, install ROM Manager Free from Market and Install ClockworkMod Recovery from that app(dont fret about technical names..just do it), its easy as click and download
thirdly, download the Custom ROM like Mik's CM7 6.5.6 or something that pleases you and copy the necessary files posted in the Custom ROM'S page, all will be zip files...and restart the phone , By pressing vol.up+home+power button..u Will get to a different screen(that is recovery) , and make a nandroid backup as everyone says(all options are seen in the recovery) ...then clear cache..clean anything and everything..then install zip file from sd card...choose the Custom ROM and Restart (and lastly , forgot to tell you ,navigate by presssing volume keys and menu key as ok button)
..ok...maybe its not simple as it looks,,once you try..it will be easy as taking candy from a baby, thanks to all the guides and developers and all the ppl that supports it.
There are further step by step tutorials , if u search for it.. i was confused as hell too.. dont worry, U Will get the hang of it Noobz

you should really follow the instructions on the rom of your choice, but ill just give you the general scope of things:
1. root phone using one of the methods found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
2. after rooting, flash custom recovery:
http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/221388-custom-recovery-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html
3. download rom of your choice from the link in #1 and move it to the root of your sdcard (which is directory /sdcard)
(3.5 you can use titanium backup to backup your apps. the sdcard should stay untouched while you flash your phone but im pretty sure that your internal memory will be erased. i didnt do this and i lost all of my apps so i dont really know where this step should go but i think it belongs here. there should be a folder on your phone with those backed up apps. move that folder to your computer. i didnt do this so im not sure if this is how it goes, sorry. btw this is optional.)
4. boot into recovery (with your phone off, hold home+vol down+power)
5. make a nandroid backup
6. wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache (follow the instructions on the rom that you chose)
7. flash (your rom name).zip
8. reboot phone (might take a while, thats normal)
the following is if you backed up your apps earlier:
9. move the folder with your apps backed up back to your phone in the exact same directory it was
10. restore it with titanium backup
someone please confirm this.

Flash & Root Question.

As A Noob here im a small bit confused.
Was going to follow this link Complete Noobs Guide but some of the links in that guide dont work anymore.
So then I came across this Video and seems too easy to do
Is the video the same thing as the noobs guide?
If it is, and I follow the video, what Rom is the best one to use.
Just looking for a stable rom, good looking and saves battery.
Thank you, great website.
Rom is your choice, yes it's so simple it takes literally a couple of mins, it took me longer to dl the files needed than to root
Personally i use the rom in my sig - Neo is the dogs bollocks
Thanks for the help.
Think I have everything sorted, last thing is do I need an SD card for this.
Dont think I do but just want to make sure before start.
Nope you can just use internal memory...
As far as I know you don't need an SD card. I rooted mine last night and was really surprised how easy it is. Literally a 5 minute process (including flashing the sensation ROM). After reading up on here I used this thread and this page which has an easy to follow, summarised guide below the video.
It was a lot easier than I expected but to be far the last device I rooted was a HTC and so didn't know what to expect without it being locked.
If you run into any problems just search for the solution as so many people have rooted I'm pretty sure everything will have been covered.
Make sure you have a insecure kernel>use SuperOneClick to root>flash CWM>put ROM on sd>boot in CWM recovery>wipe data & cache & dalvik cache> install from sd>ROM of choice>do it twice just to be safe! You're done. If you need any additional help browse/search xda forums. If you need any additional help let me know!
Ok successfully rooted and placed a kernel on the phone.
Before I put on a new ROM, I wanted to get rid of the yellow triangle.
I found this page but all the files are on mega upload which is currently down at the minute.
Any ideas how I can get a stock kernels to remove the yellow triangle?
I just seen he has updated all the links. Great news.
Just read on the last comments and im now confused.
Does the link in the previous comment fix the yellow triangle?
yellow triangle indicate that you have not a stock kernel on your phone,
normally flash a stock one and the triangle will go away,
I have not searching deep to get rid of the triangle with any kernel but ways seems to be possible.. posts on dev forum answer this
a usb jig is fine and the simple one I think, but you have to make or buy it..
try the V3RTR3MA 4.6 from the android development forum here
its one of the best roms i've ever flashed

You dont have CWM recovery (stock recovery wont flash custom rom zips), go do some more reading before you flash a rom so you understand what you are getting into, FAQ's here.

[Q] rom manager?

I'm so gosh darn proud of all you developers! Without you guys I'd so be up a creek I just got the one and only AT&T I717 NOTE and now currently running the one and only sourom (much thanks indeed given to those part , and there fine works of art- willing to let us flashahaulics deal with our addiction the safest way possible!) Quick question regarding rom manager...... When flashing clockwork recovery from rom manager...What system do you choose? I had my infuse prior to this beast and the galaxy i9ooo was the one to use...... help with choice so I can become a recovering addict instead of fixing issues all the time! Thanx a $);# ton. Fillercrackin77
Coming from an EVO, I used ROM Manager quite a bit to flash ROMs. But if you already have the latest clockworkmod, you don't need to use that feature. Just throw whatever you want to flash on the sdcard and use ROM Manager to boot into recovery or you could use Titanium Backup to boot into recovery. Either way, you get to recovery without holding the buttons. Unless there is something I'm missing built into the ROM...which I haven't found in the Unofficial ROM.
Hope this helps...

Yup you did. The toggles in the drop down, one of them is reboot, clicking on that will bring up another prompt asking if you want to simply reboot, or reboot into recovery.
Thanks for chiming in...I knew there had to be a multi-stage reboot with Unofficial...deleting ROM Manager.

A few developers have warned against using ROM Manager to any capacity on the Note. Some people have run into errors when flashing roms just from booting into recovery via rom manager. i would avoid it at all costs. just use the vol down+vol up+power combo...its the safest bet for now....
If you must have an app... Flappjaxxx, a fellow collective member, has an app called power tool on the market with power options, such as reboot recovery, reboot download, ect...
Quickboot also does the same thing, but power tool is prettier, and it was written by a note owner/developer

Rooting / roms questions?

Da_G Has an odin root available in the DEV section for the stock GB. As far as I know there are only 2 types of recovery for the Note Braway's CWM and the TWRP 2.1.2 ( I use CWM.) As far as the UCL*** those are all ICS leak builds. UCLE2 being the most recent. Personally I have pretty much stuck with Team Perfections builds but depending on what you want another ROM may suite your needs. If you install one of the new roms they keep root access and install either SU or superuser and are all flashable via CWM, however I assume you need to be rooted prior to installing which is where Da_G root comes in.

So I guess 4ext doesnt work on the note? Also, its easy to brick this device?
I didn't see any flash able zips for it in the dev section so I don't think its supported. Rom manager for the most part is unsupported also except for fixing permissions after flashing new stuff. This is my first experience with android (iPhone convert haha) I haven't had any bad experiences flashing yet but general rule of thumb is read and re read instructions for specific roms and make sure its specifically for the i717 not n7000 or anything else because that will hard brick. Also use only approved ics kernel because of the super brick bug out there

Nope, you can just flash cwm with Odin and then flash a ROM without rooting first. The ROM is rooted.
The only reason to root first is if you want to run titanium backup to nip any apps you may have installed prior to deciding to ROM.
Also that "super brick bug" is only on exynos processor equipped phones, I717 has a Qualcomm. So if you stick to just kernels MADE FOR THIS DEVICE then you can't ever encounter it.
Ah was never 100% clear on that cuz I rooted prior to running saurom rom. As for the kernel thing that's what I meant about not using the n7000 stuff prolly should of been more specific didn't want ya to make a mistake on that.

Yup.
And now that you've made the glorious switch to Android, when you upgrade to the next beast that catches your eye, you can take the titanium backup folder from your note, drop it in the sdcard of your new phone, install cwm, flash a ROM, then restore your backed up apps.
Easy peasy
So I need to verify, I can completely install a rom that gets rid of touchwiz? Also would this same rom improve battery charging time?
If I could just flash cm7 on this baby I'd be fine with that.
Cm7 is not supported on this device
There are a couple aosp roms floating around, but they are still in early development, alpha stage.

Exactly. No need to root stock ROM if your going to flash a rooted ROM anyway. Make sure you do a backup of your stocker before doing anything else. The only reason to root your stock ROM would be to backup all your apps and data. If you don't do that, you have to start from scratch. What's the issue you're having with the superuser zip?

[Q] Custom Rom Problems?

Hello all
I have searched all over but have not found any similar problems.
I rooted my phone and installed CWM and would like to install a custom rom that exists for Gingerbread 2.3.6 (I flashed back to stock OS), I have found the rom that I seem to like a lot (Atomic rom) however when I put the .zip file into my external sd and use rom manager to install the rom it turns off, then the phone boots back up... Any ideas about what is happening? Maybe I do not have everything rom manager needs?
I am definitely not ready to flash the new rom using odin, unless you put the .zip file into PDA section and hit "Start" when the phone is in download mode... from the forums I read it is not as easy as installing the stock OS
Thanks in advance!

you leave so many questions unanswered here. you have provided some information here, but not the vital info and the last part is very confusing.
im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................
are you in the right forum for the right phone? this is for the Note1
I only ask this because I cant even find any GB ROMS for this phone. the Note 1 has been updated to official JB. I would and I am sure you would hate to flash wrong files to wrong phone and wind up with a BRICK.
I am not trying to make it sound as if you don't even know what phone you have, but you would not be the first to flash wrong and kill your phone.
may I suggest you read up in the "Super Everything Thread", which is in the General Forum. you will find exactly that, EVERYTHING, there. Odin is no big deal and super easy to use. also most don't even use CWM or ROM MANAGER anymore. TWRP is now the RECOVERY of choice and much more user friendly.
there are also many YOUTUBE tutorals that can walk you through. but first, lets make sure you are in the right place.
your phone is a ???????? NOTE 1
you carrier is ?????? att, tmo, ver, sprint
it is presently running ??????? GB, ICS, JB
good luck and let us know if we help

you leave so many questions unanswered here. you have provided some information here, but not the vital info and the last part is very confusing.
im sorry, I know you are new here, but you lead me to ask some very generic questions....................

Sorry about that... I have the Samsung Galaxy Note i717 for AT&T and I am running Gingerbread 2.3.6
I thought that if a rom could run on GB it could run on any phone that has GB but your response has lead me to know that it also depends on what phone I'm running, so thanks!
I'll go and double check to see if the rom I tried to install was for the note... I guess I'm lucky I didn't brick my phone when I tried flashing the other 2 rome xD... Gonna count my blessings tonight lol

don't need to apologize to me for anything. the more information the better. not only are there so many phones out there, there are variations of those phones that have gotten people in trouble.
you have the North American version
International version
Korean version
different internals and wont all take same ROM. just be careful my friend.

I am looking into this rom, looks pretty interesting. Flashing the "AT&T fix" though, do I put that on my SD card also?
Update: For some reason I can not install rome
I am not sure what I am doing wrong because I have Rom manager do everything when I put the .zip file on my SD card and the phone restarts like normal, I even tried doing it manually in cwm recovery. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. And this rom I know for sure is meant for GB and the i717.
Any suggestions? Thanks again
You mean it's a gb rom meant for the i717 galaxy note....... I think you may be a little mixed up on what a rom is and what your actually doing...... Explain in detail what exact steps your doing when your flashing the rom so someone can help you.

I appreciate your patience
Step 1: I put the downloaded .zip rom (saurom) into my external sd card in a special folder I named Roms
Step 2: I fire up Rom manager and go to "Install ROM from SD Card"
Step 3: Go to folder containing the Saurom .zip file and select it
Step 4: Make sure "Backup Existing Rom" and "Wipe Data and Cache" are selected
Step 5: Hit "Reboot And Install"
The phone will then turn off and restart like normal, I check but the rom did not install. I honestly have no idea how I'm screwing up lol
Do you have a custom recovery installed....

You have to understand this as well, the ROMS do not install in conjunction or within the current Stock ROM. They replace them. So as stated above you have to make sure you have CWM or TWRP installed and boot directly to the custom recovery. Then wipe your data/system/cache/dalvik and after all of that install the ROM of choice.

The very first thing listed in this topic is how to install Saurom. No where does it say to try and do it through ROM Manager.
Maybe that is where your hiccup is coming from?
No further instructions needed good luck and happy flashing

Alright so I forgot that I had to wipe the data/system / cache / dalvik
But even when I tried that just now and went into installing the .zip file it said that the installation failed, is it because cwm was removed when I wiped the device?
Update your recovery to twrp 2.6

What would updating the recovery do?
Gets rid of status 7 error that makes it unable to flash.

haha, only problem is that the rom hit an error anyways so I'm still lost at what I am doing wrong...
Another question, when I reset all of the settings and stuff before I flash the rom, wouldn't that get rid of titanium back up? then how would I restore my apps and data?
Yes you are right... But first stick your phone in the freezer for 2hrs...then microwave it for 3 mins... It will cause your recovery to reconstruct and see your internal storage enabling developer options to be on... Then hit the rom installer button.
