ICS On Samsung Galaxy S2? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a fair few good deals on the S2 now that the Nexus is out with Android ICS, but how good is the ICS port over to the S2? Any bugs or flaws?
I am contemplating getting this phone for my girlfriend who isn't very tech savvy hence ICS would need to work flawlessly on the device .

Ics is not ready yet for this device there only at the alpha stage try again in 4months for a stable one or use the ics theme from the market

Samsung has said "official" ICS firmware for SGS2 will be released "some time in Q1 2012". So far as other roms go, you should start seeing ICS ports over the next few weeks.
So far as functionality goes, I'd be surprised if these don't go thru the normal "teething problems" roms & kernels tend to go thru, and given your girlfriend isn't "tech savvy" and the device would need to work "flawlessly", I'd recommend you wait until Samsung releases official firmware rather than use a custom ICS port.
Unless you want to spend a lot of time playing tech support ?

If it's a phone for your non-tech girl I would not worry about Gingerbread or ICS, I would worry about Touchwiz, Sense or whatever skin is out there and select your phone accordingly.
Getting into buggy beta ICS or non compatible apps or widgets that act weird is the killer, it just has to work and look nice. Gingerbread is good for that.

Samsung is working on it, thus there have been a couple leaks. They are still marketing the galaxy s2 so the benefit to a quick update being available would be that they can continue to sell their flagship phone.

i am resurecting this thread as i literally just ordered the S2 for my wife(i have the S3 for me), so im wondering if the phones are actually coming now with the ICS already preinstalled, or will i have to connect it to kies to do it once we get it for the first time?
thanks

No one will be able to answer this with any certainty, as it depends on what lot the phone was manufactured in and gotten ready for sale. If it came to the retailer with GB preinstalled, it will get sold with GB installed. If it came with ICS preinstalled, it will get sold with ICS installed.
It's not like retailers open up boxes they already have and upgrade the handset to ICS.

Are there any phones being sold at the moment with anything less than ics?

Android 3.0 for Vibrant?

I hate to ask this right now because Android 2.2 hasn't come out officially on the Vibrant yet, but I was wondering will the Vibrant get Android 3.0 update in the future?
no its skipping 3.0 to get 4.58876 codename ICECREAM
Wouldn't it be awesome if samsung surprised everyone and released android 3.0 for the galaxy s? Yeah.pipe dream.

The hardware is compliant with 3.0.
If Samsung doesn't upgrade to 3.0, it will piss off a lot of people. I know I'd never buy another Samsung.
Seriously, why do you think Gingerbread is "all that". We haven't even seen a working version of it?
Why even bother talking about 3.0? Lets worry about 2.2 first.

I wouldn't go that far. The original Omnia and its successor were one of the nicer WinMo phones before the HD2 came out. Last time I check, the Omnia II is still getting updates even though it's been out for nearly a year. Shame on Samsung for not keeping their promise of getting the Behold II to Eclair, but they're not screwing over all of their phones.
I highly doubt Samsung will ditch the Galaxy S, there's way too much of these phones out there. If they dare to do so, they'll pretty much commit suicide in the mobile phone market.

Amazed at the traffic neobuddy's ICS passion gets

I have never scene a forum in development get so many hits as neobuddys has. His ICS passion has almost 1 million views nearly surpassing cm7 forum that has been on here for ages. I also noticed he has only been on XDA since march, this is amazing to me. What are your thoughts on why his rom is so popular and receives so much traffic?
??? It's ICS for a 2+ year old phone...even the gs2 doesn't have ics...not to mention all the other phones that have come out since...not that shocking...
Yes it is true. ICS passion is amazing. I got my phone to passion V 10.6 version and it is amazing. Hats off to neobuddy and team.
This team is a class apart.

All I have to say is that it gave my Vibrant new life. Its an amazing ROM. I was planning to buy the S2 but this will do fine until my contract expires! I'm a happy camper, so much so that I'm gonna do the FFC mod, maybe I'll just give it to my bro when I do upgrade.
Neo's done a great job with ICS Passion. Where our Vibrants have usually been the ugly red headed stepchild of the SGS family, only getting hand-me downs from the I9000, Neo and Nelson have given us arguably that best ICS to date.
I'm running ICS Passion v11, so far it's smooth and lag free, great rom

It's developers like the ones we have here that make me even happier that I chose a Vibrant over a myTouch 3G... Boy, that would have been one big fat mistake had I chose the myTouch...
ICS
I too was ready to ditch my Vibrant for the SGS 2. Then I flashed this ROM thinking it would be pretty buggy, and to my amazement it is FLAWLESS! No need for the SGS2, it is still on 2.3! LOL! I will probably wait until the SGS3 gets released.
Oh, I ave to share this story. I was at our local mall yesterday and popped into the T MO store to look for a window mount for my car. Struck up a conversation with a rep, and the subject of how poorly the Vibrant performed when it was released came up, She said she had never heard so many complaints from customers, then I pulled out my Vibrant, showed her it was running ICS and her eyes got real big!
Neobuddy is the man! Thank him by sending him kind donations!

Why is this surprising? There are many talented devs all around the world.
its popular because it's ****ing amazing. it's absolutely insane how much progress they made with ics compared to how long it took to get a good gingerbread rom out when it was released.
I find it surprising that out of ALL the SGS, we the vibrant community who was left behind by samsung and weren't even meant to recieve official FROYO got the most stable ICS rom running on our phones haha.
ironic no?

My thoughts as of late as well!
I agree... that ROM rocks. I'm so bummed because I'm having a hardware issue with the USB on my Vibrant and have to get a replacement.
This ROM is slick and so smooth and I felt like I had a new phone using it! I have a feeling whatever Asurian sends me - they promised a Vibrant but we'll see - won't be able to get running as good as my current one running ICS..

Where have all the Devs gone?

Take a walk outside for some fresh air.
Messages like these will not motivate any dev in getting 'cracking'.
what do you mean, it is doing just fine.....they have been plugging away at getting CWM working....which without leaves most users at a disadvantage cuz some people just seem to have issues with oden and ADB. now that they have an alpha of CWM roms will be coming next. and i also think that since ICS is coming up the future that devs are waiting for that. why keep dropping ginger roms? and i see them working on ICS roms as well. we have a stable ginger rom in TPC's/da g's kernel mix. i still see the same devs working and plugging away and we have more now than we did 2 weeks ago...
they are working, and like you said.... they are working on there own time and for FREE.
we should all be greatful. when they stop working be worried.
I think ICS is in the works. The DEV just wants to clean up some of the other issues he is working on. Yes this is vague but I do not want to over step my bounds.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
I too am eager however the one and only rom we have is stable. I can wait for ICS as long as it takes. We have an overclock kernel as well. With other devices I have seen dozens of roms and dozens of kernels with only one or two having full functionality. We have been very fortunate. With that said there seems to be less than the usual amount of Development on this device but remember this is brand new. It takes a while... with the streak we only had a few devs and even then at one point really only one dev. Give it a few weeks. If not do like I am and imerse yourself in reading on how to make roms. I develop android apps and have a few in the market, now that does not qualify me to make roms it does mean that I have the ability to learn like many others could do if they were motivated to do so.

I THOUGHT I made it clear that was not my intention at all. Thanks for the other responses they actually answered my question. There are many people like me who are fairly new to this. I am coming from the inspire and when I first got it there were tons of roms available, but I got it 4 months after launch. Then I realized I could have been using the desire HD roms. NO. You will brick your device if you try to flash international ROMs, as they have a different processor as well as other various differences that essentially make them completely different beasts with the same form factor.
Reading a bit more would inform you as to why development is slow right now and why you can't flash international ROMs.
To give you the sparknotes version of what's going on however:
As others have said, we only have an alpha version of CWM, so devs are working on getting that polished up.
Second, devs are working on a way to get around the flash counter, so that you do not have any problems with a warranty exchange in the future. If you don't care about your warranty or want to risk a return with a triggered flash counter, go for it. Other phones have had their flash counter bypassed, so I'm sure our talented devs will come up with a solution fairly soon.
Also, as others have mentioned, we have one stable ROM already, and a great kernel, so that should solve most problems with using the stock ROM until more development occurs.
Lastly, with ICS on the horizon, there is not really a good reason to produce a ton of GB ROMs, so be patient and use the stable one we have already until ICS drops in a few months or so.
The longest anybody has had this device is 11 days right now, and we already have a stable ROM and OC/UV capable kernel. In my opinion, that's a damn good start, and I have a feeling that development will eventually be huge on this device. Give it a few months. =]

Nobody here referenced the international release of official ICS. I think most people here know that it doesn't mean anything for our devices. However, it will be here eventually, and devs are most likely already working on porting over an unofficial version.

I feel the same way. ATT and Samsung know they need to do something to pull ahead of android competition; they've done it with quality android hardware, now they need to do it with consumer peace-of-mind on the software upgrade front. Nowhere has Samsung said that ICS for "international note" is coming in Q1 2012. They merely say it is coming to the "note", period. I think ICS will come for the US variant sooner rather than later. I know when I got my Atrix, people whined and hollared that it would never get GB. ATT delivered GB very soon, to the scorn of the red-faced naysayers. I know the Atrix was Motorola, but its still an example of a carrier pushing a fast update. Samsung is an excellent company, especially with their Android devices. If any company leads the way for quicker full-product-line android upgrades, I'd expect it to be them.
Pure speculation and I'm maybe totally wrong, but I think the US Note will see ICS very soon.

thank you guys and gals
This is the downside of getting a newly launched device. I went thru it with the asus transformer 101. That was a little painful in the beginning, but the brilliant minds solved all the problems. It took about a month to really get rolling.
I picked up the Infuse about a year after launch and it was humming within 3 days cause all the hard work had already been done by those great minds in their forum.
The advantage with the Note is it's really great as a stock phone out of the box.
The smart guys and gals here want to advance just as much as we want them to succeed in making this Note the best it can be. So, Patience, and let them work. When they have something good they will be shouting it as loud as can be.
Support and good words go along way. We appreciate you guys more than you know! Thank you for all your efforts, and time away from your work, family, friends and hobbies to devote to this great piece of hardware.
this forum has gotten more action in the past week then the atrix did in the first 2 months. lol.
Damn you guys that are coming from other forums are spoiled!!! I remember waiting foreeevveer just to flash something on the atrix.. and then when CWM came out i was like "wtf is a CWM?" (atrix was my first android).
Stock rom on this phone is doing pretty well for me .Froze all the bloat, not using touchwiz -- and its like i dont even have anything from Samsung on there (besides the SPEN).
I can do without a rom until ICS comes out.. and that is going to do wonders for this device. ICS on the ATRIX is like a breath of fresh air, cant wait to see it on this beast.
Your right, I guess I was kinda spoiled coming from the inspire/desire HD forums. I never realized how long it takes to get things up and running. I apologize if I came off as being impatient. Again that was NOT my intention. I love these forums and appreciate the Devs hard work immensely.
On another "Note" (I know,I know, sorry) I was at best buy mobile last night where I know a couple sales reps and they mentioned that they hoped someone ported over Ics soon as the Samsung rep they spoke with at their store said Ics won't be coming our way for a good while. I myself take that with a grain of salt though. Do you think that a Samsung sales rep would even really know the Ics release schedule?

I guess I never looked too far into the flash counter. I had read a few threads about it, and people seemed to be convinced that AT&T would get fussy about it. I suppose it doesn't really mean much if you end up putting your phone back to stock and unrooting before returning it. If it wasn't for rooting and such, developers couldn't make apps and flash stuff to the phone, so I guess it doesn't really make sense at all why they would care if the device has been flashed with something else, especially if it is returned to a stock state for a return.

Agree. There's already a thousand threads about what's new with ICS (and OPs that didn't do their own research).

I'm waiting ICS beacause it will bring native support to VPN connections with Group Authentication, that now is impossible to use with Honeycomb..

Well, to be honest, I haven't found any major, or noticeable, bugs on stock. Could you tell me some you have run into?
And no major fc issues either. Some of the apps indeed force close, but that is an app issue and is usually rectified with an update from play. No hc blame there.
Of course every new android version is (supposedly) better than the previous. Gingerbread was way better from froyo, it had more features, but the lack of those features in froyo doesn't make it buggy. Hope you understand what I mean.

Of course every new android version is (supposedly) better than the previous. Gingerbread was way better from froyo, it had more features, but the lack of those features in froyo doesn't make it buggy. Hope you understand what I mean.

don't get me wrong. I brought a galaxy tab 10.1 on the day it was released in nyc, and am presently a happy owner of a tab 8.9
Just HC had a lot of bugs and fcs in its initial release, though the most current Touchwiz based on HC 3.2 is definately more stable. But of course, by now, I've blissfully moved on to aokp ICS custom rom, and naturally feel no urge to return to HC. I m sure when you upgrade to ICS after sammy releases the official version this month, you'll not want to return either.

Only cuz its a way better OS.. Best Google's work so far and it's really awesome.. Now if you want to stay with hc no1 is forcing you to do so..
It's just a dumb question IMHO.. If you have a 4 cylinders engine Chevy and out of nowhere Chevy calls you and tells to you that they want to replace your old engine for a brand new 8 cylinders engine FOR FREE, will you stay with the old 4 cylinders (that works ok but some times need oil) or will you be HAPPY and go get your new engine??
Again it's up to you to stay with your old engine or go get the new 1.. But consider yourself a dork If you don't change because you are okay with the old.

[Q] Jellybean on Galaxy S2

I was wondering if our beloved Galaxy S2 will receive Android 4.1 Jellybean officially? I'm pretty sure it will be available through Cyanogenmod or whoever, but will it also be a Kies update, and if so, is it gonna take all the carriers ages to implement it? Personally I'm always on one of the neweste CM Nightly builds and I've no complaints, it just works, which is kindof what I want the phone to do. I saw a youtube video of ICS vs Jellybean in terms of laggines, "Project Butter" aims to make the whole Android experience smoother and faster. What I'd like to know is if our now aging Exynos SOC supports all the things their putting into the OS, for example their doing Vsync and tripple buffering. All I know about those is that I enable them in games, no real idea what they actually do. Is it as simple as a software upgrade or must the hardware first support is?
Ask Samsung.
Yes it might come next year! But frankly I think 4.04 will be last.
No, no 4.0.4 neither

Can't we get Jellybean for our Galaxy S2 this year?

I don't see a point in Vsync. I've yet to see a game uncorrectly display an image.
Since triple-buffering is new, I guess our phone has double. I would like triple, and have it as smooth and as fast as the iPhone, but I don't want to lower my battery life on it. Plus I'd expect overheating since it takes two pieces of hardware to process am image.

Soon
Just wait for the next CM-rom, then we will get the great taste of jellybean!
FYI, there is a discussion thread about JB that has been open in the General section since yesterday here. (making this thread superfluous)
I'm pretty sure we will get 4.1 because if Galaxy Nexus S will get this.. Why shouldn't we get this? :victory:
i think we may get 4.0.4 but i verry much doubt that we will get jb

I wouldn't say this thread is entirely superfluous; here the discussion is focused solely on whether or not the Galaxy S2 will get JB, while the other thread also includes comments on the features of it.
If you came looking to find out if/when we were getting it, where do you think you would find the answer more quickly?
