[Q] Swype Battery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys,
i've searched the forum but cant find a whole lot regarding this topic. Its really more of a "whats your opinion" question rather than a "whats the answer to this" type of question. Anyways, I just started using Swype, thought it was pretty cool but did notice it in the battery usage at a very low percent. Just curious to who uses it and if anyone experiences drain because of it. Thanks guys!

i haven't used swype in a while but i dont recall there being much of a battery drain, unless the latest update causes this.

I am using it and I like it a lot. I am actually using a beta so I have the latest updates. I don't type all day on my phone but I don't feel like it's a battery hog. What drained my battery was the common culprits like my email client checking all the time and so forth. There are treads on battery hogs. Surprisingly, I found that PowerAmp had a nasty habit of doing something even if it was off. Also, programs that you (or at least I) would never think of, like Officesuite, kept doing stuff on their own even though I had only installed them and never used them. I found that a good way of identifying these bad guys is by checking wakelocks in betterbatterystats. cheers.

You're totally right, there is no topic at all regarding battery issue on SGS2 ...
Who is useless ?
Battery drain its a question of reading the varying fixes and or reasons why and trying them out .
The post regarding Android OS battery drain may help or not .

Yes, this phone has horrific battery drain. I recommend you take it out to the nearest field, strap it to a rocket, and shoot it into the stars as soon as possible.
Or, you can consider using the search button or follow the MANY links the nice gentleman posted above for you.

Lol maybe the battery will drain less in an area with very little gravity.
On a more serious note does anyone know of a list with apps that are safe
To freeze or even remove? I've been looking through the above posts for about an hour and can't find
Squat.
Edit : holy crap I need to open my eyes, its stickied at the top of the general section.

Yea I saw. See my edit. Feel silly now lol.
Just do a factory reset fixed all my problems and my phone came with KE7 installed I didn't upgrade to it.
Battery life went from 10 hours to a day and a half
after lot of tests, i discover that was the calendar sync. In idle mode my phone drain 5-7% per hours without 1% per hour.
After I uninstalled all the useless battery draining system apps, my system doesn't use alot.. like 2-5% , but my screen is getting 50-60% everytime!
I allready tryd different settings, but still, it attacks.
Do someone here have a friend with a SGS2 with good battery life !?
Try to change the battery for 1-2 days and see if its better or not, so we can know if its the battery thats need to be changed!!! report pls !

I doubt EVERYBODY that posts in these forums have a faulty battery. It MUST be software related. So many "faulty batteries" would be a great cause for concern.
from my understanding its 50% user and 50% the version of gingerbread were running.
Im coming from an atrix which has great battery life. A little bit of optimization which the great devs are doing is definitely helping.

CM7 Q&A

Since we have Q&A stickies in the Inspire and Captivate forums (as well as a few other fora around here), I thought we need a general CM7 Q&A here for the Atrix.
BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS IN THE FORUMS, ASK YOURSELF:
Has this question probably come up so often that there is an FAQ that includes it?
OFFICIAL CM7 FAQ FROM THE ATRIX-DEV TEAM
Phalanx7621 said:
I know how much people LOVE to post questions in here as if it's the CM7 ROM and get all pissy about how things dont' work, but keep in mind that if that were true and a bunch of stuff didn't work it would NOT have been made part of the nightly CM7 releases. Also, it wouldn't have been released if that were the case. The devs work very hard to make sure most major problems are taken care of before every release, but if yer flashing A NIGHTLY, keep in mind it comes with NO promises of functionality and it is STATED in the OP that it shouldn't be used as a daily driver. So if you have a stable version, such as the lastest stable version found on the development page OP, then post a question or comment here after searching for the answer with search feature here and google. Otherwise, there's a Nightly post section as well in the Development side if you wanna look there and that's what yer using. Most of the time if there is a major issue and you can't find it on the bug tracker than it's yer phone, or something you have installed that is messing with the functionality of the ROM. Lastly remember folks, it's the developers job to make their product work with the ROM, not the other way around. Have fun, happy flashing!

You know what ? Its a damned good idea. Too many people are cluttering the development thread. Now since no one else has posted a question related to CM7, I have one:
Can someone help me figure out what is eating my battery on standby ?? I don't have that power hungry facebook app and I did some tweaks found ( via SetCPU ) that I found in the development thread, but it made very little difference. The thing is, I just have no idea how to monitor what is using all the power. How did they figure out that facebook was causing a big drain ?
Do you use google latitude?
A very good thing is use BetterBatteryStats to really understand where the CPU is being keept awake. The embed battery stats for example only showed me Android OS as a culprit, but gave me no further details..
my 2 cents
i have heard CPU Spy is great for figuring out whats using up your resources. dont know as i tend to get pretty good battery life (16+ hours with exchange push enabled)
Thanks for the tips. Yes, I do/have used latitude. I'll put an end to that and give those apps a try. Will report back!

Had anyone else had trouble getting the hbogo app to work on CM7? I can login and try to play a video but get audio with no video. The hbogo splash screen plays perfectly when playing a video for the first time.
Edit: Just found a bug report for this exact issue. (issue 163, sorry, I can't post links.)

When I receive a call, my phone goes to a lock screen, I have to swipe the lock screen to answer. On stock, when I got a call, the screen woke up in the dialer app and all I had to do was press the answer button. For the life of me I can't seem to find a setting to change this, any input appreciated.

Do you by chance have Tango installed? I had it for all of 2 days and noticed my battery died about twice as fast as it normally would. I usually get a good 16+ hours easy with moderate use but was only getting about 9 with the same usage. Did a quick google search and verified tango was the culprit. Uninstalled and back to normal. I don't know if this applies to any other video call apps but might be worth looking into.

Think I already read something about it, but cannot find right now... What's the deal with /mnt/emmc and /sdcard in cm7 ? Is it possible to get it back like the stock rom ?
I am having problems using Titanium and taking screenshots, think it is something related...
Thanks in advance!
Wifi connectivity drives me nuts on cm7. Had to turn it off and on in order to connect. Someone mentioned to edit propbuild. Idk what that means.

You need to go into Setting/CyanogenMod settings/Application, check "Use internal storage" then reboot your phone and it should be back to how it was before.
Betterbatterystats seems to have found some interesting things. Phone on for 1hr and ten minutes.
Under partial wakelocks:
Lightflow: 1hr10m3s
AlarmManager: 58m13s
JuiceDefender:55m44s
There is more ( I can provide screenshot if required ), but those are the top three.
I do find this a little odd. Juice defender was just installed the other day and I can't see how it would cause any problems. Battery was a bit crappy before and didn't get any better/worse. I froze lightflow the other day and battery drain was about the same.
filthyfnj24: Nope no Tango.
I can provide a list of apps if would help as well.

EDIT: upon further investigation I have narrowed down AlarmManager as causing a lot of partial wake locks, but I dont have any alarms set and have not synced my calendar and have the Calendar alerts turned off. However Suspend is showing as a problem as well.
I'm using BetterBatteryStats, SpareParts, and the stock battery manager to try and track this down.
Well, after eliminating Lightflow and turning off Beautiful Widgets small weather, things are improving. Instead of losing 5% per hour on standby, it is now down to about 3%. Juice defender and Alarm manager are still at the top of the list, In 2hrs and 18min I have:
Alarm manager 33m12s
Juice defender 27m56s
So, Juice Defender is next on the list. The funny part is I know that CM7 is causing this. Battery used to last near forever on standby.
Great idea... Stickied. You may also want to check out the atrix-dev-team FAQ and consider suggesting Q/A posts from this thread or links to other posts in other threads, for updates to that FAQ.
Ever since I upgraded from pre-beta 4 to Beta, my phone has had two horizontal deadzone lines on the touchscreen. This persists from ROM to ROM, and is getting to be annoying. I have no warranty, as I bought the phone from a guy who won it in a contest, unlocked it and brought it to another carrier.
Is there any chance that this is a software issue, and can be repaired?
I got it !!!!
Alarm Manager is no longer a problem. Phone now sleeping correctly. I disabled background date, topped off the battery and verified via Betterbatterystats. Now if we could disable background data while it sleeps and re-enable it when you wake it up then we'd be set.

MIUI Issue

I tend to try to answer my own questions by reading all the threads around here, but I have actually got an issue that I don't know if anyone else has really run into yet on MIUI on the x2.
Haven't had any problems and have had good battery life so far on MIUI. Today, though, I had the battery fully charged this morning and it was nearly empty by the end of the day (I usually get 2 days on a charge using my phone sparingly). I didn't think much of it and didn't use my phone for a couple hours then went back to it and it was dead.
Now, the phone will not boot past the Motorola dual core screen. I am likely going to simply SBF then go back to either MIUI or CM7 but I was curious if anyone had any ideas on what this might be related to so I can avoid it again later on.
Thanks
Edit: Realized after posting this it might be better suited in the Q&A, my bad!
What does battery usage say? Anything out if the ordinary?
Have you gotten it to boot yet?

Ash has stated that this is a wake-lock issue from some app or service. I explained this in another thread, probably the MIUI thread in the development forum. But, it is a known issue.
He's currently working on fixing a lot of other issues. Per his twitter, he's ran into a road block concerning audio flinger.

it shows the Android OS as taking up over 90% of the battery in there. I haven't ever really gotten too into the battery monitoring business. I've gotten good battery life out of the phone doing what I've been doing so this is uncharacteristic at this point.
I was able to SBF without an issue. So I am back up and running.

I am using the stock ROM and not having any issues with the battery lasting less than a day. I had to make a few changes to the settings, but once tweaked I am really happy with it.
Normal for me... a day and a half of light to moderate use. Plenty of syncing every hour, lots of Wifi and GPS, never switch any radios off, lots of FM Radio, auto brightness.... blah blah.
KL1 + LPR baseband, stock rooted, bloat removed. No silly apps, no silly task killers, no battery defenders/benders/superchargers/tweaks or other nefarious idiocy

You're phone is active most the time, rarely sleeps. If you compare with mine above, you notice that the activity is in short infrequent bursts. The screen being on takes a huge amount of power - it's a big screen. And OLED.
I would say considering the sheer amount of use you give it, it's doing rather well... NO comparable smartphone (except the Razr Maxx) will give you much different. It can't.
By the way. not sure why the battery falls off a cliff from around 30% in your pic - scary!
1st, the post was apparently originally posted in a different location, then got moved to the Q&A section by a moderator.
2nd, your screenshot has what looks like a LOT of screen on time. What are your display stats for screen on time? (hh:mm:ss) From my estimation just looking at the bar graph, it looks like you have over half, and nearly 2/3, if not 3/4 of your overall battery time with the screen on, and the phone being "awake". With your overall battery time being 7:16:39, from your screenshot, that's about 3.5 to 4 hours of screen on time? If you are constantly using the phone, or keeping the screen on, it logically follows that the battery will drain.
3rd, JJEgan's point was this: This entire forum is meant for developers. (the name of it is "XDA Developers", after all) Yes, there is a Q&A forum, but more and more, users who are not developers are posting all over the boards stuff like "why is my phone doing blah blah blah" on commonly answered questions, (which is a clear indication that they didn't look or search very hard for the answer, even if they say they did) or, even more offensive in my opinion, "upload XXXX file for me" without so much as a please.
Non-developers are welcome, obviously - heck, anyone can join. But more and more people completely disregard the forum rules, which are plainly posted for everyone to read at the very top of each forum section.
Ahh ok.. Sorry.
I joine the forum as i have a genuine interest in all things phones wise.. Wether that be cooking roms, mods tweaks etc etc.. I dont come on here on the sole basis of asking questions.. Every now and again somethings niggle me about my device so the best place for info surely is xda developers. Though i only use the app at the minuite to view posts i did'nt actually know where the search link was. Though now i do i will use it...
Anyways:
Yea i did notice that big drop on the end of the battery stats.. Thats happened a few times ive noticed.
Dont think ive seen anyone elses screenshots look like that.. Could it be a sign of a dying battery? Or just wrong stats.
Ive read that the battery stats clearing does nothing as the stats it shows is whats using the power n not actual battery level.
My phones only about 5 months old too so everything in it should be in as new condition.
Strange..

[Q] Abnormal battery drain overnight

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my GT-i9300 with stock JB & stock kernel (I9300XXDLJ4), the battery drains too much fast while screen is off, even after all apps closed or cold start (if screen is on, battery drains abnormally fast as well). BBS shows lots of partial wakelocks named NetworkLocationLocator, and of course I have googled this and found an issue in AOSP issues list, but no solution. (sorry can't post links, issue #37348)
The only thing I can do to prevent early battery death is to go to Settings->Location and uncheck 'use wireless networks', but this is really bad for overall user experience. Things like latitude or google now are disabled.
I am attaching lots of screenshots that might help to understand my problem + BBS report and logs.
Thanks everyone in advance...

It seems like I found the problem, at least on my phone. I have disabled SNS (Social Network Service or so, a weird app shipped with the stock rom by samsung) and also uninstalled the facebook app, looks like I don't have the issue since that. Battery has drained much less overnight today, and I don't see any location-related wakelocks in BBS. I'll try to find what exactly causes the problem
Can you please be more specific about this service? Where did you disable and what was the name of the app?
Thanks

It's under Settings->Application Manager. You have to swipe twice to the right in order to open 'All applications' tab there, and find SNS app, and then click 'Disable' button. The app's icon looks like Facebook logo (little f letter on blue background). Please let me know if it was helpful.. and don't forget to freeze/uninstall official facebook app
Thanks. Meanwhile I've remove and disable a lot of services, mainly from Samsung that I don't use and the battery drain is more stable when the device is on standby.

Well, have you noticed anything other than the services and battery drain? Maybe an in-/decrease of performance, or something else?
If you look on the Android *stock* battery stats app, you'll see, as soon as the screen is off, for the night, the data connection goes crazy with different signals and network modes. Have you tried putting the phone somewhere else at night, maybe just to see, whether that makes a difference? I'm guessing, you get fluctuations in your network, at night. That has happened to me, quite a lot, as I had my GS II (Telekom DE fixed it, though).
If that isn't the problem, then you've probably installed other third-party apps, that are causing this battery drainage, maybe they're collecting your user data, or something.
Anyways, hope I could help!
LG familyguy59/Beatsleigher
Yes I've been watching it. In resume:
1) if you activate use networks for location the battery drains even if none app request it.
2) there are a bunch of services mainly from Samsung that drains the battery just because they do.
3) if I leave my Wi-Fi off for the night it will drain 5% against 20% if I leave it on
Probably this one is because of weak Wi-Fi at my bedroom. Yes I've selected only when connected but even so the phone doesn't respect it.
4) if you have selected backup this phone to Google it will drain the battery also
5) I can have really good battery life if I disconnect Wi-Fi and data and connect it once in a while
But my point is why should I need to manage all this stuff? Why do I need to spend more time troubleshooting something instead of having fun with a new phone?
I've used juice defender, battery stats and a bunch of other applications just to conclude that android and Samsung are a piece of **** regarding power management.
And yes, Google now is disconnected and also history location.
If I wipe my phone and do not install anything, battery life is regular, as soon I start to install apps it will start to drain without apparently explication.
I have bought an extra battery and will live with it. I this it's just an os feature.
I've tried some custom rom's but all of them have problems, some because something doesn't work, others because developer didn't implement it, so I know if I want one good enough to suit my desires,I should cook it myself but I do not want to do it, so I came back always to official one.
And I do not have enough patience to undervolt or spend my nights tweaking something that should have work from out of the box.
This is my experience with my first android and I think this is why people always have complains about this system. I'm just going to live with it and accept the fact that this os have lots of defects that should not exist.
One thing is true: it is very frustrating from an user experience point off view.
Just my 2 cents

I completely agree with you here. I don't know what exactly causes the problem, bugs with Samsung's software or bugs in Android itself - I don't care. The user experience is awful with this device.
I really considering getting an iPhone. iOS is built the way when regardless of amount apps installed and their quality the battery life is stable and decent. No app, maybe except VoIP, could drain battery if it's in the background or the screen is off. For me personally, all this Android's 'customizability' causes only decline in UX and battery life.
Ridiculously, there are lots of poor quality apps for Android that behave extremely bad, for example The Tribez game. It's a game, and I am expecting battery drain only when I'm playing (isn't it logical?), however, I do get drain caused by this app even if it's closed! That's ridiculous. I just bought an iPad version and I have absolutely no problems with it, moreover, it is running much faster on my dualcore tablet than on my cutting edge quad core phone. Of course, this is just an awful job porting the game from iOS to Android, but I'm sure, mostly this is problem with Android itself. This is the _mobile_ OS, and it must not allow any app behave like this (like iOS does, it kills badass processes almost instantaneously). I'm sorry Android fanboys, but your lovely OS is a poor quality product.
I've already said too much, but again, I don't want to think if my WiFi or anything else is turned off, I want to use my handset. I think you get my point.
