UPDATED:
HTC unlock supports the View.
I have S-OFF working as an upgrade path
It is possible to rollback from HC to GB, irrespective of S-OFF or not.
There is some more work required on the procedures, but it can all be done.
-----Information below this line is kept for historical reference------
The Honeycomb upgrade for the View is expected to start rolling out.
Before taking this upgrade please read the following in order to be aware of the consequences of taking the upgrade if you want any root options or custom ROMs or custom recovery.
It is expected that the upgrade will contain a new hboot (that has been strongly hinted at by reliable sources but never explicitly confirmed), that being the case you should be aware of the following consequences:
If you take this upgrade there is no HTC unlock for the View yet.
This means no root for now
This means no custom ROMs for now
This means no rollback to gingerbread for now
In other words this is a dead-end for now.
There is no S-OFF tool for the view when running on HC (revolutionary will not work)
This means no root for now
This means no custom ROMs for now
This means no rollback to gingerbread for now
In other words this is a dead-end for now.
There is currently no known working temp root exploit on HC (again this means no rollback)
So with that depressing information out of the way, here is the good news:
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
While some of you will want to stay completely stock and have no need for root or custom roms/recovery and I entirely respect that opinion and option as being valid others may be undecided. If you are undecided I strongly suggest that you either:
Wait until you have decided
Perform the S-OFF upgrade, which is reversible and will allow you to go back to stock if you want to.
Again, to re-iterate if you take the upgrade as is you will be stuck with no options but to stay completely stock.
I hate to ask this, but I want to make sure since I am newb in all areas relating to rooting, flashing etc. You are in fact referring to the View and not the Flyer?
Thanks for the heads up.
I am getting my View in the next week and will not upgrade to HC until there is a way to roll back to GB

Yes, I put an "over the top" highlight of the in the first post to clarify.
Just got the notification on mine too, thanks for the heads up even though I really want to upgrade. I will wait!
Another question from a 1 week old Android Noob. Is this update you are referring to an official one from HTC/Sprint? (my device is out of WiFi range, so I cant tell if there are updates), or is this from devs like yourself (globatron)?
Official release.
I hate HC & planned to decline it anyway, so do you have any idea if it will keep prompting me to update if I hit decline?
I don't know about that way, but you can turn off checking altogether anyway.

Another question from a newbie. Is everything you said (except for the rollout date) still applicable to the Wi-Fi HC update for the Flyer? That is to say, we should wait for further news before upgrading from stock GB to HC?

@Globatron did somebody upload the update for you yet? If not, I'm getting ready to dl it and I can. Just let me know.

No. There is an official HTC unlock for those, and as a result it is possible to rollback to GB and S-OFF there, that said I have all the pieces needed to handle the upgrade S-OFF upgrade of the flyer from day 1.

yeah, sorry...updating previous post to avoid confusing others.
I don't want to whine and clog up the thread, but some comments are driving me nuts. Plus, this might clear up some confusion. Here's some things I've learned over the last couple weeks, when I've been waiting for the impending Honeycomb update:
1. While the hardware of the HTC Evo View and the HTC Flyer is extremely similar, they are different enough that the Honeycomb upgrade for the View won't work on the Flyer. If you have questions about the Honeycomb Flyer update, you probably should redirect any questions to that thread. Flyer users have already been able to update to Honeycomb for a couple weeks, which has been the cause of much jealousy among us View owners.
2. Globatron - who I will commend for somehow having all this inside information - has clearly marked this as a View thread. To just give you a couple examples, it's titled, "WARNING to View Users" and also contains "View" in giant red letters in the opening few sentences. This information clearly doesn't apply to the Flyer.
Three cheers to Globatron. I'll be taking his advice and waiting until he can post a rootable HC update. I'm thrilled about possibly having universal stylus support, which will make this tablet the best $250 I've ever put down on a piece of technology.
GoodandEvo.net has this warning about updating if rooted.
Update: If you rooted using Revolutionary, hold off on applying this update for now. I'm currently stuck at the white HTC start-up screen, and now have to wait for my battery to die before I can fix this in recovery since there's no way to pull the battery on this tablet.

Hi all,
I've had my EVO View 4g and I just rooted. I'm kind new to android so I'm learning as I go. I just had a couple of questions regarding my View tablet. They are as follows...
1. I purchased my tablet without a data plan, is this going to affect me as far as getting updates (I have an EVO 3d with connected hotspot so I just connect to that)?
2. Now that I'm rooted, where do I go from here? Is there a site that is just for this tablet where I can go to get roms, kernels, themes, etc.? I don't see a whole lot of info regarding this tablet anywhere.
3. Can I use my view to make phone calls even if I don't have a data plan and how?
4. When the heck are we getting Honeycomb?
Any help getting my tablet optimized to its fullest would be greatly appreciated.
1. You don't want OTA updates. If you install one, you will lose root. And depending on what they update, you might not be able to root again until somebody cracks whatever new protection HTC thought up.
Its pretty typical that rooted versions of the most recent updates are posted here in Development. Those are the ones you want to flash, not the official OTAs. Flyer is not as well supported here as other devices. But normally on other devices, rooted versions of OTAs are often available shortly after the OTAs go live. Sometimes even before, if somebody gets a hold of a leaked ROM!
2. Have you looked at the Development section? ROMs and kernels are posted there.
3. Dunno
4. Nobody knows except HTC, and they aren't saying.
Thanks a million!
I haven't looked at the development section just yet, but I will do that asap. One more question....
Can the view be overclocked once I flash a ROM. If so where can I find a kernel?
Also, can you recommend a for the view?
Again, thanks so much for the help. Your the only one!
Hi to all,
Ever since the release of the Sensation line of devices, there have been a lot of paradigm shifts at HTC, one of which is their willingness to open up to the people who made them what they are today.... us.
With that in mind, if you had questions regarding everything that has been going on at HTC lately (online unlockers, HTCDev.com, OpenSense SDK, etc), what would you ask?
Think of questions and doubts like:
- why is the EVO 3D still S-On even after completing the unlock process?
- why are devices still locked out of the box and require the user to unlock them?
- what's the deal with unlocking and warranties?
- why is HTC slower than Revolutionary?
- what cool stuff can devs do with the new OpenSense SDK and APIs?
Quick note: development related questions are highly encouraged as well!
Please post all your questions in here. I will be making an article in the Portal with the best questions (and hopefully with answers straight from HTC!)
So, fire away.... I will only keep this thread open for about a week or so as I am also posting this in the Sensation forums. Once I gather enough material, I will send off the questions to HTC and will write an article about it shortly.
Happy asking!

I think phones will still be locked out of the box just to keep things safe from users that dont know what they are doing. I also think the reason they were slower than revolutionary is a mute point too as it doesn't matter and they likely had more indepth one and had to figure a way to track users that do so to protect themselves from having to service warranty phones b/c people borked them doing stupid stuff.
The MAIN ? That everyone should be asking is WHY the device is Still S-ON and we are NOT allowed to flash anything past a rom. NO custom kernels, no splash screens, no radios too i assume.
I actually asked this to a few HTC reps and got answers that were all over the place. One time the rep responded saying if you do their unlock method you should in fact have S-OFF. BUT that they also offer ZERO support for those unlocking so if you dont show it then they can't help. This was while I was just trying to report that it didn't show S-OFF and wanted to know if this was on purpose or a fix was coming later in an OTA or if this was staying like this.
The same rep later said that unlock process may be full or part, and that he can not tell why or if it will be full in the future.
It clearly states not all devices are supported, not that some will be half unlocked and some will be full unlocked.
He then went on to say again they can't offer any support for the unlock stuff even though that was NOT what i was trying to get at all.
so to end it HTC really needs to be hounded about this issue and needs to issue a release stating WHY the 3D is only getting partial unlock, and when they plan on fixing that. There is little point in being able to tweak the rom if you can't do kernel and the lower level stuff.
The only reason this isn't being brought into a bigger issue is b/c most/all the devs and people that care got the phone before the OTA came out so they are clear of the issues. BUT all the others have to suffer at the moment.

Interesting points... however, I think you missed the objective of this thread
The questions that you answered are only examples of things to ask HTC, and are not questions from me. I am in contact with someone at HTC and they want to try and get closer to devs, which is why I am posting this here. They would like to know what are our concerns, questions, and comments regarding their doings as of recently.
I will bring your post up with them as I think it was good as well.

Yeah well then limit what I said to the S-ON point and please find out if thats going to be fixed or if its something we will have to live with in regards to the unlock method. I think its rediculous to provide a half unlock that doesn't allow flashing of custom kernels, radios, and splash screens.
the more I think about it i dont think I missed the point of your thread really though. As what I stated is a "...concern, question, and comments..." toward them.
I do think I would like some more examples laid out for opensense and things it opens up like you stated originally.
Also would be nice to have a forum on their developer portion of their site where devs could get with HTC devs/tech support/ along with other sense devs and run things by them in there that are specifically geared toward the things on the dev site.
So if they wish to get closer to the Devs, Then how about this....
When they do a OTA like they did when they went from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 and changed the kernel why do they not also at the same time release that new kernel/source to the Dev community instead of sitting on it or never releasing it? It would seem as if they truely want to get close to the Dev community they should reach out and participate..
And I to would like to know WHY there is NO S-Off?
Like what Sgt. said....having it unlocked with no S-off makes no sense. Cause you cant tweak the rom if you can't do kernel and the lower level stuff. (and no kernel source)
I think if HTC works with the Dev community as you say they want to... Then they might be able to help reduce those warranty issues by doing so..
So my questions are Why no S-off?
If doing S-Off WHEN?
Why do you get multiple answers depending on who you talk to about this stuff at HTC?
Shouldnt all the Tech help have the same info?
How about releasing Kernel and such when an OTA is done so Dev's can use it? It might just save alot of issues/warranty as well...
Maybe im way off base and im fairly new here but.. Those be my questions.
Why did they release the incomplete source for their kernels?

This +1
And I want to know if they will release the kernel sources in a better timeframe than they have been doing?
I also want to know how we can participate with getting HTCSense.com out of beta?
LG is about to release an update that will convert 2D Games to 3D in their 3D phone (optimus 3d), are you going to do this for us too?
What about more 3D content in your Watch app? (The movies one, so far only the green hornet), in short, more 3D content for us!
I would like to ask them why I can't ever hear my speaker... at all. It's so quiet that I can have it all the way up and if there is any background noise I have to put the phone up to my ear to see if it's playing. My ears aren't at fault either because I have much better hearing than just about everyone I know.
Also, why do they refuse to release their source code in a timely manner and when are they going to rectify that?
I think the biggest problem we now have with HTC is a lack of trust . I would tell your friend and HTC to tell the PR people not to post or promise anything at all until your 100% it will be delivered on time. Also we need transparency.... Saying you'll unlock the bootloader is taken to mean the whole things not part. Explain things better and then explain why. Also as part of AOSP release the WORKING source BEFORE the update hits OTA. LG is a shinning example of this...
Thank you all for your questions. I believe I have what I need for the time being. I will submit the questions to HTC and will post an article in the Portal as soon as they are answered. Thank you all again for your time
I will reopen this thread soon.
Just received my TF201 Asus Transformer Prime today.

I'm looking for a method in rooting the device.
I'm aware that RazorClaw is suppose to work on the device but could anyone confirm that it there are no bugs which would possibly brick the device etc?
PS. This is my first tablet / android device so please bare with me.
Thanks In Advance!

I think you will be fine rooting that way. There is a site that reviewed th tfp and they used that root method and they said it went well with no issues.
What the hurry ?
It might not be a bad idea to wait until the unit is burned in, and you are satisfied that everything is working perfectly before mucking around (i.e. rooting). Then, if you have problems, you can more certain that the problems are attributable to the rooting.
Enjoy your Prime
Could anyone brief me with the cons of rooting the device? :|
Research first, especially with this being your first android tab. Don't be over anxious n go bricking your device..lol.
Was there an immediate notification for an update after you opened it? Razor claw supposedly doesn't work after Asus pushed a system update. It was rooted prior to update on in-store demo model.
What's reason for eagerness to root so quickly? There are no custom roms or anything out yet. It's not 3G so no tethering. If you root and uninstall system files/bloatware you won't be able to do OTA update to Icer Cream Sandwich. Which means you will have to wait till someone here makes a version, which might not for a while.
Sorry that this is off topic, but does the color you ordered seem true to the advertised pics?

Good thing we have search engines....
1. Technically voids warranty and may not allow OTA updates.
2. Possibility of a brick if you don't know WTF you're doing.
Huummmm... cons of rooting..... hummm... don't rush, still thinking.... possible OTA update issue, very unlikely, but still possible I guess; most of the time the OTA will just erase the root.... uummmm yeah, that's about all I can think of.
Also, guess there's a very small chance of a soft brick... but I would tend to think that the root will either take, or it wont... but there's still a chance I guess.
IMO, the benefits far outweigh the "possible" consequences.
Wish I had mine, I do it in a heart beat.

These days when there's a one-click for everything...it's very hard to jack anything up. Now, going in manually...there's always risk of operator error.

With this being his first tablet and Android device period, seems like he wants to root just for the sake of saying he's rooted. You know very well what happens to a lot of new people to Android that just jump in and want to root w/o thoroughly doing the homework first. Lmao

ATM, other than de-bloating there is very little reason for root.
Does anyone know by any chance the official release date of ICS?
I'm aware that it has been "released" to certain phones like the Samsung Galaxy, but when would it be made available to the Asus Transformer Prime? o_o

Yeah, no other reason... except de-odexing, themeing, TI Backup, freezing, editing database files, changing VM Heap size, installing custom scripts, overclocking/undervolting custom kernels, disabling startup processes.... that's just off the top of my head.

No Official date yet but could be by end of this month or mid Jan. It literally could be anyday. Just keep a lookout on an update notification popping up. Or even go to settings and about. Then click on system or whatever to see of it searches and finds an update for your device.

Everybody says root root. The new roms come out fast... I did it with my original tf and roms don't come out that fast especially if Asus is going to push ICS soon. I'd wait a while especially since a lot of potential devs won't get their unit for several weeks or months!
Ok... I have been completely out of the Android game for at least a couple months... (unless you count the occasional check to see if anything is happening on the AOSP front)
Now we have a new leak and new ROMs. Some new devs, some old devs. Though it seems Scott has moved on, or hasn't been paying enough attention to the rezound to know there is a new leak and he needs to update his ROMs.
So, a couple questions guys.
(this info has been difficult to find in the past for the rezound as its spread out too much with no central location to find latest info, unless that has changed recently)
New leak... So we are convinced this is the final version that will hit OTA? If so, Cool...
Are the newest radios any better/worth the change? (subjective for the most part I know) No compatibility issues with the different hboots? (GB vs ICS issues excluded)
I am using the Mod'ed ICS hboot that came with the S=off exploit the day ithe exploit was released. Have we gotten any better versions of Hboot yet? (like a real engineering ICS hboot or newer Mod'ed version?) Is the Mod'ed hboot worth keeping, or should I just use the latest stock version and be done with it?
Aroma? WTF is that... its a new thing for ROM installs but what is it? I found the code page for it, but way too much info, just looking for a summery. LOL I can understand the concepts and how it works, just don't throw too much jargon at me. Coding/software isn't my field. I'll stick with avionics.

Thanks Joel. Cleared up some stuff.
I have a Verizon One Max with the latest OTA, completely stock, and I'd like to flash a custom rom. I don't care if I lose fingerprint scanner and I'd love to be able to have the ability to return to full stock if I ever need to return the phone to Verizon. I assume that the latest OTA has broken or at least stalled current methods to unlock, root, etc.
Can someone please tell me if an existing method still works and if so, point me in the right direction or give step by step if you have the time?
I've had Samsung phones for the longest time and the process was so dead simple, I feel a little bit over my head with this HTC phone even though I love the look and feel of the phone itself. Thank you for your help in advance if you have the time.

Yes, sunshine does work for the latest OTA. It is what I used after getting the OTA. I was totally stock up until using sunshine.
Awesome! Would you mind outlining a quick step by step of how you found success or pointing me to a thread that outlined the journey from stock to flashed? As I mentioned, I was well versed in the (admittedly simple) process of flashing samsung phones, but since the switch to HTC it feels like another language.
Thanks for the confirmation thafrogggg and thanks for the tip thay!

Just to document here if anyone else is coming to this thread as lost as I was:
1. go to the URL above and download sunshine.apk (made by jcase)
2. run the apk and it does EVERYTHING (you don't need to unlock, root, etc) There is a catch though, this costs $25 one time fee through paypal in app and the license is locked to your individual phone.
3. If you reverse the process (which can be done easily according to jcase) you can redo it later, but only on the same phone.
4. The APK leaves you with S-Off on most every HTC device it seems (good news is, it won't let you pay unless it knows that it can help you)
5. The whole things takes less than 10 minutes from what I've seen and then you need to flash a custom recovery, kernel, rom, etc.
I'm not involved with the thing, but it seems to be an awesome solution.
Going to give it a shot now.
